You think Psywave is weird? How about Kinesis? First of all, in Red and Blue, this move went pretty much unused. It couldn't be learned by any pokemon and could only be accessed through Metronome. In Yellow, it was finally added to Kadabra and Alakazam's learnset as a signature move. Surely, being the signature move of one of the most powerful evolutionary lines in the game, it must be a pretty solid move, right? Well, all it does is reduce the opponent's accuracy. By one stage. The move is almost identical to the HM Flash, it's just 10% more accurate. This is especially bizarre when you consider the fact that it is functionally identical to the move Sand Attack, which any given Pidgey knows as far back as Viridian Forest, except that it's 20% less accurate. And considering you're expected to have Flash on your team, and there is no Move Deleter in gen 1, who would ever be convinced to teach their Alakazam Kinesis of all things?

Psychic seems to be full of these weirdly useless moves, ever hear of the move Synchronoise? a damage dealing Psychic type move that can only hit pokemon of the same type as the user, and most of the pokemon that can learn it resist Psychic, or in Umbreon's case *are immune*, and as far as I can tell only a few of the pokemon that learn it can get STAB while also having the potential of being Super Effective. only pokemon that are Water/Fighting, Water/Poison, Poison/Flying, or Fighting/Flying can be hit by a Super Effective STAB Synchronoise.

psywave does at least have a competitive niche! in generation 7, the common bronzong set in the RU tier was stealth rock/toxic/psywave/filler. the first two are to wear down opponents passively, while psywave is used to chip down steel types that resist stealth rock and are immune to toxic. although luck based, few pokemon are excited about switching in on a potential 150 damage roll as well. thanks psywave!

It's funny how the move was buffed in later generations to do between .5 and 1.5 the user's level in damage, giving it some niche use on pokemon like bronzong, then they didn't want to make animations for all the moves and cut it out with gen 8. Maybe it was so bad in gen 1 because they thought Sabrina might be too hard if she used psychic instead? Such a disappointing reward for beating her though... Oh well, gen 1 being weird is nothing new.

    • @shiftfire4511

Except, they had Psybeam. 65 power with a low chance of confusion? Seems like a decent move to balance out the Psychic-type's extreme advantage without making it so..gimmicky. And it'd be actually USEFUL too!
Especially if they moved Psychic to a later area, like the Pokemon Mansion, Seafoam Islands, or Victory Road.
Besides, it plays on the idea that psychics are tricky and rely less on brute-force. Which is a complete lie in Gen 1, but is far more believable in later entries!

Kinesis shouldn't be confused with Telekinesis (also learnable by Kadabra), introduced in Gen 5, but not available in Gen 8. And a pretty weird move in its own right.
Telekinesis makes the target float for three turns, making him immune to Ground Type move, but also reducing its evasion.
Despite being a move tutor available to a lot of Pokemon in Gen 7, you probably never used or see it, due to its extremely gimmicky nature.

I'd still maintain that Razor Wind is the worst attack out there (though Synchronoise was one hell of a contender in more recent generations). A Normal-type move that takes two turns just to do base-80 damage...... yeah. That's pretty much the exact same damage output as Pound or Scratch in the same number of turns. What's even more sad is that, by the time you get this TM (the move itself being TM-exclusive), it's not too off from being when you get access to the Strength HM. So basically, you'd have access to a Normal-type move that can do the same amount of damage in one turn, and you can teach it to Pokemon indefinitely (and keep in mind, I'm talking about an HM..... a move that most people deem to be complete garbage in battle when it isn't Water-type, and it still outclasses Razor Wind by leaps and bounds). Really though, gen1 in general was loaded with fucking horrible design decisions when you get right down to it.
Though what really gets to me is that, until gen8 finally removed it, Razor Wind received almost no updates this entire time (aside from an increased Critical Hit ratio, and gen4 converting it to a special attack, that's it)..... and yet, for a few generations, they still made its accessibility elusive for whatever reason (the anime continually portrayed it as being some kind of useful attack too). Gen2, it's only available through breeding a Pokemon that learned it in gen1 via TM. And in later generations, the Pokemon that can learn it naturally tend to do so at a pretty high level (most of them getting in their 30s at the earliest..... a point by which they're guaranteed to have MUCH better options). And gen4's special conversion didn't help, considering most of the Pokemon that learn it are more physically inclined. Gen6 had a bit of sense by making Pokemon learn the move at level 1 (even if one of those Pokemon was a fucking legendary), but then they backpedaled like crazy in gen7, which has Type:Null and Sylvally learning the move at level 70. Who in their right mind would ever consider teaching this garbage attack to their Sylvally at that point?

Actually, in gen 1, seismic toss on chansey is used for a rather different reason then poor offensive stats. Chansey actually has good offensive power in gen 1, as due to special still being one stat, Chansey’s super high special not only gives it great bulk for taking special hits, but it can deal them out while recovering the hp back with soft boiled really well. Chanseys typically run Ice beam and Thunderbolt for attacking moves, and combined with that high special, that’s some damn good damage. However, with thunderbolt, ice beam, and soft boiled, Chansey is left with only one moveslot left. This is typically used for thunder wave, but what about the Chansey sets that wanna use weirder Chansey set ups, like sing or reflect? Those typically end up having to replace one of the attacking moves (almost always thunderbolt), and while Ice Beam is super strong, it leaves Chansey with a problem. Chansey is supposed to stay around for a damn long while, being fine to do so with it’s insane bulk and recovery… but with only ice beam, that leaves only 16 attacks, which for a mon like Chansey isn’t really as many as it’d want. Enter Seismic toss. It’s damage is pretty good, it has much more PP then Ice Beam, and on top of that, Ice types are actually damn good in gen 1 ou (I’d argue it’s probably the third best type in the tier, with Normal as best and Psychic in second), so a Chansey with only Ice beam to attack with would quickly run out of them against any remotely tanky Ice mon due to not being able to even freeze it witha resisted hit, and stuff like Starmie could also likely hardwall it duebto the resist, especially combined with Starmie’s tankiness and access to recover. And don’t even try using Thunderbolt here as your one attack, Rhydon and Exeggutor will absolutely massacre you if you do.
So, if you wanna use more interesting stuff like reflect or sing on Chansey in gen 1 ou, seismic toss is typically the way to go due to its better PP, not due to Chansey’s offenses.

Strange thing is, some stupid gen 1 designs were made even worse in later gens. Constrict is a great example: only 10 base power (3.5x weaker than Tackle!!!), with an incredibly small 1/3 chance it String Shots the enemy. That's fine for a move with a decent second effect like Poison Sting, but not for a mere 1 stage speed drop! Even as a starter move, that's horrible. Yet for some reason they decided this was overpowered, and they reduced its speed drop chance from 1/3 to 1/10 in later gens.

    • @nerdstop5025
      @nerdstop5025 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

To be fair, in gen I, crit rate was based on Speed (specifically, you have a (Speed / 2) out of 256 chance of critting), so the Constrict nerf could've been decided on before they changed how crits worked in later games, but not re-evaluated after the crit change.

Concerning weird Gen 1-moves, there's this one story that has been bothering me for years, but I can't find any information about it, so I'm not sure if this is some weird Mandela-effect issue or if I just misremember things.
Back when Red and Blue were released, you of course could also buy those guide-books that walk you through the game. In Germany, we had one coloured in black. On one page, the one that details one of the fights against Giovanni, there was a screenshot of the player using a Charizard... and that Charizard knew a move that doesn't exist, called "Schmerzer" (roughly translates to "Hurter"). Now, I usually would assume that I just misread the thing, since I barely learned how to read back when the games were released. After all, the spelling is pretty close to "Schlitzer", the German name for "Slash". Unfortuneately, I can't find that guide book anymore, so I cannot go check if remember it correctly.
However, around the same time, I also read a random kids gaming magazine, and there was a letter reporting that they had left their Blastoise in daycare for a long time and it came back with a move that also didn't exit, called "Spritzer" (roughly translates to "Squirter"). That, of course, could also be just another case of little children claiming that something totally happened to them ingame.
But anyway, I accepted by now that I probably just remember things wrong. If they really shipped out a guide book that contains a non-existant move, there obviously would've been any kind of coverage online, even if it's just a short "Dafuq is this move?"-post somewhere.

I remember in 1998, a kid at my school had a Pkmn Sticker albums (you know, you buy a packet of stickers at the store, open up the packet, see what stickers you got and fill the album accordingly. No idea the english name) and Lapras' name was Ness, Marowak was Guardia and Kadabra was Pocus.
I can assume the translating process was tediously slow and still not very official back then. So I can imagine you can also find those weird moves in a german game.

I'd like to think psywave was a miscoded move and was meant to due 1-1.5× your level. Not 1 hp but damage equal to your level at minimum. It was meant to be a psychic variant of seismic toss, but that's just my theory

the developers probably haven't gone into the game mechanics as in depth as we players did ourselves later on. there was probably no idea yet whether pokemon would actually become a lasting and successful franchise and that we players would analyze every corner of data on the cartridge. it was just a cool game for kids and the game testers gave it a thumbs-up. they probably thought psywave is a cool gimmick move, that stood out and would get players interested as it ignored battle stats. that's probably all there is to it. with later gens they probably finally realised it's not nearly as good as intended and they made it into an early game level-up move.

With dragon rage however it is understandable due to the only dragon being dragonite with it's stats, they were worried that any other dragon attacks were going to be too strong, come gen 3 however and they found better dragon moves and later gens now have even more dragon moves like dragon tail and dragon pulse

What makes Dragon Wave even stranger is how it's portrayed in the anime. There's an episode of the first season where a Gyarados uses it and it's so powerful that the main characters get flung away onto an island. And in the Black & White series, Axew knows it and they still make it look much more powerful than it actually is.

if it was random between .5x-1.5x the users level than at lvl100 it would range between 50-150 averaging 100, than it would at least be on average as good as seismic toss
