No, no, no Whenever told "company hours", "no more flex-time", "no more working from home", simply ask, "Are you SURE you want that?", and just quietly await the answer. Sometimes it takes a while for the gears to start grinding away again, but they often back off after the "careful what you wish for" part kicks in.

I once worked with a girl that would constantly be on her phone and ask others for answers on training questions. And even though those were terrible, the most terrible thing that she would do, that made me despise her, was that she would call me Melinda. That's not my name. I once worked with a guy who was constantly on his phone, which was mainly an issue because we worked at a dog daycare supervising the dogs for their and our safety. He had a habit of hiding when he was supposed to be cleaning kennels/rotating dogs. It was annoying. Oh, and apparently I scared him, which is hilarious because I’m 5’6” and barely threatening-looking and he’s like, 6’2. He apparently wasn’t expecting me to have a “scary voice” for when I had to get the dogs’ attention if a fight was breaking out lmao

My name is Dan and I once had a coworker in a large office named Stan. We were apparently identical twins, as I was constantly called Stan and he was called Dan.
I can understand the confusion, as we seemed to look very much alike, with minor differences.
Such as: he's black, I'm white. He has a full beard, I'm clean shaven. He's bald, I have a full head of hair. I'm tall, he's not.

I had a similar employer who was really adamant and strict about time. Regardless, that did not stop the team lead from expecting me to work before clocking in and continuing to work after I had clocked out. So, every time they would require me early or expect me to work longer, I made sure I was getting compensated for my time by being clocked in. This lasted for three months when I got called in by the head of the department to explain my clocking habits, when I reiterated what my team lead had said to me they didn't look surprised at all and actually apologized to me. Then they pulled my team lead in and boy they were not quiet about it even behind closed doors. Apparently, this was not the first complaint they had of him doing this and he did it to contract people in order to make his budget numbers look better than they were, even though contract was not allowed to work more than 30 hrs a week. Needless to say that was his last day in the office but not mine. I freelanced for them off and on for three years after that.

Oh the huge supermarket chain I used to work for loved to push employees to work after their ended but not get paid for it. Basically abusing the goodwill of the employees.
Now it’s been over a decade but I don’t quite remember what finally ticked me off. I think it was due to the fact that whenever a customer comes to checkouts and there’s not enough time in your shift left to process the transaction. One time I explained to the customer that I couldn’t serve her since I literally had two minutes of my shift left. She complained to my supervisor who insisted I do the transaction. (Note that I wasn’t a cashier, I worked in dairy and I’d been told to go help checkouts because it was busy.) In the end I only ended up being six minutes late but it was the principle of it. Besides there had been numerous times where I’d been browbeaten into staying a few minutes late to finish my current task before I could go home.
So I became absolutely careful to leave the second my shift was over and stopped being paid. I wasn’t a complete jerk though as I’d warn the supervisor or Duty Manager that I’d be unable to finish doing my task by the end of my shift. This was usually recording the waste items.
So after a couple days of this, I was recording the waste again and warned the manager I’d be unable to finish it in time after spending so much time being forced to support checkouts.
Without a moment of thought the manager told me to just finish it before I leave instead of finding someone take over. I wasn’t having it. At the end of my shift I put my PDA and printer down in a safe place and went home.
Next day that manager came to me asking why last night’s waste reports weren’t finished. So I told her I’m no longer obligated to work after my shift ended because I wasn’t being paid for the extra time. I also pointed out that I had indeed warned her and asked for a replacement. She wasn’t happy but legally I was right.
It happened a couple more times until they realised I was strictly adhering to my contract. And that was that. Nothing they could do about it. I was immensely satisfied with my own brand of malicious compliance.

@@mikoto7693 The nasty catch on these situations is if you had worked off the clock and then decided to report this to the EEOC (because it is illegal for a business to not pay you for the work you have done), is that unless you have documented proof of management or higher up or a policy asking you to do this, the company will come back and claim ignorance and then take action against you for violating their company policy.

Here in Canada, if you rear-end someone, your automatically assumed to be at fault. However, there are a lot of cases where that’s problematic. For example: there is a large city with massive traffic problems during rush hour. There’s a highway bridge that gets packed bumper to bumper during rush hour. True story. Driver brakes hard or something and causes a domino effect behind him, resulting in about six cars hitting each other. The degree of fault increased as you went back up the line e. The driver at the back of the line, not at fault, got hit with the most fault because of the multiple cars that got hit. Even though the driver at front was at fault.

The main road was closed for most of the day for accident reconstruction...

One minute late from your break, and he'd bear down on you like a gale of miasmic bad breath and get in your face and whisper/yell abuse at you in front of a totally silent bar. We had to pay for our own food/drinks and snacks and he'd lean over us as we put the money in the till, counting the cents going in (and trying to see down our cleavages). No joke. He taught me well to NEVER GIVE AN EMPLOYER one minute of your own time. Right on the dot I'd just walk out when my shift was done. Halfway through dragging a tray of glasses out of the washer? That's where I'd leave it. Bye Scrooge. It was at this job that some random guy told me (quietly) that if I ever wanted to work for another hotel, down the road, just come right in and give them his name. He was the bar manager at that hotel, apparently. So when I walked out of this one (proper notice) I took a week off and walked right into another job at a much better place. Same kind of work, but so much better manager. Hire people you trust, and trust the people you hire, is what I learnt from the next job.

@@nightdweller6446 Are you talking about the US? Because remember how this video started: he didn't get reprimanded for him doing exactly that. Because THAT'S what strong labor laws do.
In Europe it really depends on the country. But France, GB, Germany, Netherlands, most Scandinavian countries all have much much stronger labor laws than the US (despite all having different laws when it comes to the nuances). At least when comparing to the government mandated laws. I don't know about individual state laws in the US. Some there could potentially offer more protection than others.
The US is one of the major countries blocking progress in improving minimum internationally mandated labor rights ...
It also depends heavily on the company. Where I work we have something which translated literally means: "trusted work time". Essentially it means that we are expected to work 40h a week, we have to be available 10am to 3pm (but are still allowed 1h lunch break), and other than that we can work as we please. Nobody is checking whether we actually did 40h (that's the "trusted" part), and nobody cares whether it was 40h on this specific week.
We are expected to chip in overtime when project deadlines approach, though nobody forces us to do it. On the other hand we can even get entire days of work off to get rid overtime accumulated. If, for some reason, you can't or don't want to get rid of your overtime, the boss will happily buy those hours from you at the end of the year (in between as well, but nobody does this afaik). I honestly wouldn't ever want to work at a company without such a liberal policy again, unless heavily compensated through my salary for this inconvenience ...

Story 1 YMMV. Employment contracts often have "exceptional circumstances" clause which they use to justify crunch periods. One way to mittigate is to claim you've prior commitments, and if pressed say it's of a private personal nature - in most places employers aren't allowed to question further & may be wary of repercussions of punishing you. Keep a diary and write everything down - especially if "exceptional circumstances" happen with regularity.

It's more likely that the firm is just cheap (what, the clown cheap? Surely not). They know that young employees often don't stay around very long, so spend as little as possible on their uniforms.
Many companies make young employees wear different-coloured uniforms for ease of identification, by the way. There are some things that those under certain ages can't legally be asked to do, so being able to tell someone's age at a glance is useful - and can avoid law-suits.

The problem isn’t when the person’s stupidity gets them killed; it’s when their stupidity gets *someone else* killed.
Similar thing with motorcycle helmet laws. Riders say “If I crash and die without a helmet, that’s my own choice that I should be allowed to make.” The problem isn’t when they die; that’s the easy outcome. It’s when the crash causes brain damage that could have been prevented by a helmet, disabling them without killing them. Now they will collect Social Security Disability; in other words, their choice has put the responsibility of their support onto society, which implies society should have the right of some kind of input to their choice.
And we (some may say “unfortunately”) cannot be so heartless as to say “If you made this choice because you value your freedom over your life, then you agree that if you have an accident where you become disabled instead of killed, we can euthanize you if you cannot support yourself.” or “If you become disabled by your choice, we will stand by and watch your family starve and succumb to the elements; since you denied us any right over your actions, we have no responsibility over the outcome.”
A family member lived in Toronto for some time, and told us of roads that would be closed in winter weather with signs that essentially said “If you go past here, and get stuck, we will get your corpse after the spring melt. Rescuers’ lives will not be risked for your poor choice.”
Well, that became more of a rant than intended. Congrats to anyone who made it through. 🤐

In regard to the last story, I HATE when uniforms require white shirts. We used to get seasonal tee shirts at my old job before new management decided it was just cheaper to make every employee pay for white polos out of pocket.
I had to make a rule afterwards that whichever employee would *lose* a wet t-shirt contest was the one who had to go take the trash out whenever it was raining. I'm slightly overweight and I have larger breasts, so that uniform was a NIGHTMARE. So glad I don't work there anymore. Not only does my other job *exclusively* have tee shirt uniforms, but it's a closed warehouse, so the managers only enforce uniform codes that are safety hazards. So I can come to work wearing whatever the heck I want.

People with this kind of work ethic most of the time have some ties (family, blackmail, ...) to the boss. So the new managers rule set in a mandatory meeting that every employee had to attend was the only conceivable way.

While I sort-of agree, I'd also recommend getting said employee to sign a waiver stating that the company isn't responsible for dummy's negligence for his own personal safety. Protect themselves from lawsuit and responsibility for a single person's dumb actions, recognize that the actions they are taking ARE dumb, and that they would not receive compensation if they were hurt because of personal negligence. It's one thing if someone's hurt because of someone else's or the company's negligence, it's another to get hurt because you weren't careful enough in ways that you are expected to know how to prevent by this point.
IE employees at hardware stores are expected to wear steel-toed shoes for safety reasons, if they don't and their toes get crushed it's their own fault, or for construction workers wearing hard-hats and harnesses while doing their work. Your company is going to tell you to use the safety gear or they're not responsible for what happens if you're hurt because you failed to pay attention.

    • @ArschvomDienst
      @ArschvomDienst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There is no need for the employee to sign a waiver. The safety procedures likely are written into the work contract.
Plus multiple people told a person multiple times to not do something/pay attention/wear protective gear, that person did/didn't anyway and got in an accident because of that.
With prior evidence, a paper trail and witnesses.
Yes there likely is a lawsuit but said lawsuit is with a 99.999% chance not going well for that employee.

This guy went mad insisting that my lunch break was 1.00pn to 2.00pm. Fast forward 3 weeks, he rushed in the 12.55pm demanding that I do this work for him and that it was urgent. You've guest it at 1.00pm I downed tools, opened my lunch box and started reading the newspaper (as I said it was the 70's). He went mad upon his return until I reminded him of his stance about the times of my lunch-break. He threw his toys out of the pram and stormed off in a huff but I never had trouble with him again.
