Ah yes, the wild 'unemployed shelf stocker' a non-hostile creature. They will come into your store, stock the shelfs, greet fellow customers, then leave. We have yet to catch one of these being on camera.

That first one irks me. Like, the attitude that women can't know anything about games. My sister is co-founder of a clan we have that spans across about 5 different games, and we've run this clan for years. She is my companion in almost every major event, raid, and even the most basic missions in games from Monster Hunter: worlds, Warframe, Destiny, and more. That guy was an idiot.

I had pretty much this exact interaction when I worked at GameStop. A couple guys came in. I was standing directly between the door and the registers when I greeted them, and they literally walked around me to talk to my coworker behind the counter. I didn't have long to be irritated as they asked about RPG recommendations, so my coworker gave the biggest smirk and referred them back to me, the resident RPG authority.

It's a completely stupid way to act. I always assume that if someone is working in a store, or a department, then they are competent, female or male, young or old. Worst case scenario they're inexperienced but can direct me to someone who can help. Especially in gaming you can't tell who is competent and who isn't just by looking at them... gamers are gamers, whatever package they come in.

That guy in the second story...uggh...😣
I actually do have a girlfriend who IS from China and still lives there...we met when she was being safeguarded from a cruise ship where she had just been terminated. All she wanted to do was see the world...she LOVES going to different places and meeting people from other cultures. We immediately hit it off as I also like meeting people from other cultures, which is one reason that I work in the seaport where I live. We connected to each other via WeChat and have been talking ever since. She is INCREDIBLY smart and has learned several different languages, including English which she speaks almost fluently. Over the course of time, she got a job with another cruise line and is currently once again seeing the world. Right now, her ship is docked in Manila and she sent me a picture of a carriage similar to one she was riding on and the excitement in her voice was palpable.
We should not judge people negatively just because they come from a different country. People are people...and you never know where your next awesome friend may come from. I smile everytime I get to hear from her...she's a true blessing in my life. If I had judged her negatively just because she's Chinese, who knows what I would be missing out on?

I refused someone service for the first time the other day. Some guy walked in to the electronics store where I work and the interaction started out pretty normal. He walks around the store for a bit and picks up an SD card and a phone charger.
The guy was a bit short with me from the start but that doesn't really bother me, maybe he's just having a bad day or whatever.
Guy - "I bought this shaver from you and you need to get me a new head for it"
Me - "I'm sorry but we don't have any spare parts for it but..."
Guy cuts me off, now raising his voice
Guy - "I BOUGHT THIS HERE SO YOU SHOULD HAVE ALL THE PARTS FOR IT"
Me - "Like I was trying to tell you we don't carry any spare parts from that manufacturer but..."
Guy cutting me off again - "So you're saying that I bought this thing and once the blades get dull I just need to throw it away?!?!?!?!"
Me - "No, like I was trying to tell you the manufacturer has a store and service shop over at blahblahblah and..."
Guy starts screaming at me pretty incoherently, cursing me out and insulting me personally.
Once I finally get a word in I tell him that he can get any parts he needs from the manufacturer's store and there's no need to shout.
Guy- "OK YOU DUMBASS! I'll just take these then." And he literally throws the items he was carrying at me.
By this point I'm barely able to keep from shouting right back at him but I'm so proud of myself for not just jumping over the counter and smacking the dude. (I'm a big guy, 6"5 and a bit overweight) So I stand up from my seat behind the counter and look the git directly in the eyes.
Me - "You really think I'm going to do anything for you after that? Get out." - Not shouting btw, which was hard...
The guy backs off a step and looks at me in shock, he probably never had anyone stand up to him before.
Me- "Out, now!" - Have to admit I'm raising my voice a bit now.
So the dude finally storms out. I was fuming inside and my heart was pounding for a good hour after that. I had to go take my break and calm down a bit.
No repercussions for me and my manager supported me when I told him about it.
It feels good to get that out...

Tbh, I live in Canada and found more women workers that assumed I was sexist than men who thought women can't play games.
While I have refused service from certain workers, gender has never been an issue, but rather things like:
-Being so interested in a personal chat with a coworker and giving disgusted looks when asked for help that I felt unwelcomed.
-Being very clingy in a "you're a security risk" sort of way (I remember once this happened because I was "considered sus for looking at PS2 games" when the PS4 was just announced.)
-Once I refused service from a female worker who had called me a liar til I left the store an hour earlier cause she thought the PS2 game I wanted was only on XBox (she refused to check, then when I came back she called me sexist to her co-worker and a semi-busy store.)
But the only time I ever heard a guy say "women can't play those kinda games", there were 3 guys who humbled him with teasing until he left. (Stuff like "she can probably play better than you". Would have joined in, but I am bad at retorts like that.)

My wife has worked for the same department store for 40years and is about to turn 60. A the moment they have her on the front door greeting customers as it is the easiest position where they can pull her off in an instant to go help anywhere else in the store, she's worked in every department including a few that no longer even exist, so can do anyone else's job without training. She gets a lot of the "Do you work here?" despite wearing the uniform and name badge, and has similar fun with the customers as the final story. She also gets plenty of the misogynistic A/hats that think that because she's, well, female, that she will have no clue. Remember 40years full-time, can do any job in the store... So people won't like whatever answer she's given and will demand to speak to the manager, "Call HIM down here now!!!". She will happily call the manager, at the moment the store manager is a women, and when they arrive the response is usually something like "What is SHE doing here, I want the MANAGER?!" Now the store manager is a feisty little lady who is only about 5'2", but I'm sure could intimidate an angry lion, and the I'll let your imaginations fill in how that particular conversation usually progresses.
I could write a book with the stories she brings home... "Confessions of a shop assistant" maybe...

The main reason for racists/bigots/misogynists/misandrists/ableists (and whatever else there is out there) to stick to their beliefs is due to human psychological fallacy. People don't like being wrong. People don't like being told they're bad. People don't like being called out. So people revolt and kick and scream whenever their beliefs are challenged. Beliefs are often considered a part of one's core identity. So to challenge one's beliefs is (according to fallacy) to threaten that core identity.
SciShow has a video about the psychology at play behind the anti-vaxx movement which goes over several psychological fallacies (including the one mentioned here).

That story about the entitled 'international' student brings an incident of my own to mind. I live in a college town with quite a diverse population. A guy bought the house behind mine and was out cleaning the place up one weekend. He chopped down a tree of mine that was about 6 inches in diameter! I ran out and told him he was on my property and that he had cut one of MY trees. He had used the cut tree as a barricade across an old overgrown path that one of the previous tenants and I had made when going back and forth to each others' houses. I guess he thought that would deter anyone from my house going on his property? What a way to introduce himself to the neighborhood!
That was when I discovered he was from another country. He did speak English, so, I took my plat map out and tried to show him the boundary, but, he would not even acknowledge me! He finally said he would be getting a survey as he had bought the place. I told him that I had bought mine years ago and that everyone had a survey done, as that is the norm when you buy property. That MY map showed he was on my property. I just wanted to him to NOT cut down any more of MY trees!
He kept trying to blow me off! So, I told him that, in this country, women could own property and he had better get used to it, if that was his problem! That if he touched one more of my trees, I'd be calling the law on him for destruction of my property! That he could continue to ignore me, but, he'd damned sure know who I was when I got done!
He didn't cut any more trees. I now have a 6 foot high privacy fence. From his back porch, all he can see is MY fence! LOL (His property was shallow, but, wide, whereas, mine is narrow and deep.)

The second one hit right home for me .
I work in a store in Germany ( im female and Portuguese) I dont understand german perfectly, but I know enough to have a normal conversation with someone. And sometimes a customer comes in and ask me for something, because I'm still new in the store I don't know everything, but I do know what section it could be and for them to look there, I would go and help them but I'm the cashier and I have customer wanting to pay and leave so I can't go with them. And this day I was working with my boss in the store again I'm the cashier and in Christmas time everything is a mess and very busy , a man asked me where he could find a kit to repear his bicycle, I was sure we had it in the tool section and I told him that. Not even 2 min pass and he comes at me angree. " there is nothing there ! Do you even know what I asked for?
I said calmly " yes, and like I told you before sir, it's in the tool section "
He : I looked everywhere there nothing! If you dont know what I'm talking about you could have been honest and not make me waist my time. He was screaming and all angry , that my boss had to go see what is happening.
He: finally someone that understands my language, this foreigners are everywhere, why can't they stay on they country.
My boss that yes she is german but has a foreigner husband was not very happy about that comment but still politely asked what was the problem and what he needed.
She took him to the same place I told him before, and showed him where the kit was, a place very visible. But before he could take the kit, my boss said he had to leave our she would call the cops for him being a problem in the store.
She : there is no place for racist here, and my employe speaks very well German and lives in this country for 6 years, she and many others work very hard every day so they can adapt in they new lives and many didn't even had the choice to come here , but a have to.
He left and I never saw him again

Told this elsewhere, so please pardon me if you've already read it. Not exactly "do you work here?" but "you know what you're talking about?"
I used to work at a model train specialty store. A lot of the regulars seemed to like having a woman expert behind the counter (I've been in the hobby since I was a teen) but not all. One day, a new face appeared in the store. He was looking to get into the hobby, N scale, he thought, and was looking at prices and for advice. "What about steam locomotives in N?" he asked, as we stood together next to the reference books. I told him there were very few available (true at the time) and that modellers would look for used locos at the annual train flea market, alter Japanese steamers to look North American, and modify the few that were out there. He looked at me awkwardly, and said something like "I really don't want to be sexist, but I don't mean disrespect, but as a woman, are you, like, informed enough on the subject?"
I turned and picked up a softcover book titled *Modeling Steam Locomotives in N Scale,* a collection of articles from an N newsletter. I flipped a few pages in and pointed at the name under a "How to" title. "That's me." A few more pages: "That's me." A few more: "And that's me." It was just too perfect an opportunity to miss. He fell over himself apologizing, and we had a great chat after that.

Sexism ahoy! These type of guys need to learn to shut up or they'll be shown up. I've gone to heavy manual labor jobs with my dad and showed up his whole crew that consisted of men two to three times my age, and one of their sons around my age who acted like Snapchat cared about his life.

Kinda a reverse, I don't work here. But the first story reminded me of it.
So back when gamestopbwas way bigger backnin the 360 pa3 Era, I was buddy buddy with most of the workers and would even just go in and chat because I played (admittedly)waaay to many. In fact sometimes if I was there and they were asked a question about a game they didn't know but knew I did, they asked what I thought about it. I told them I don't mind as soon they knew they could.
One day I was chatting with one of the workers and a dude walks in. He was debating between if he should possibly get a ps3 or just several 360 games. The guy working was more I to 360, didn't know too much personally about ps3 games, or play the 360 game the guy had asked. But knew I had. The guy and I chatted for like half hour and after he told me stuff he liked wanted, etc, he literally bought a brand new ps3 and I think uncharted and mgs4.
Needless to say, the manager saw me sell someone a console and 2 games, so the 2 games I WAS buying for myself he let me just take as I had basically upsold from 3 360 games into nearly $600 sale

I hear way too many stories about women who work around/play games and other nerd culture who just get shat on by dudes who assume they know nothing. There's such a toxic den of male geek culture that assumes women aren't nerds, and when they present themselves as such, this den DEMANDS they prove themselves as knowing what they're talking about. This extends to comic book fans, TTRPG nerds, and gamers. (One of the main reasons I don't refer to myself as a gamer)

This may date me a bit but .... Seven Eleven's corporate had decided to get into the "convenience auto parts business"- and located a store two blocks from where I lived. I had a work car that I paid $350 for, and it was a POS; something approaching a new car for that price hasn't been seen since 1925, but I digress; the battery wasn't charging, so off to the Chief's AP store I go; there is a young lady behind the counter, and I'll admit m male mind was skeptical, but it turned out she knew more about how the charging system on a car worked than I did; lesson one- don't let doubt rob you of what you seek!, two- she asked me several questions before she wanted to suggest just what to buy to fix my problem, three- she honestly didn't like the idea of just buying a battery and calling it done. She had convinced me to go back to the car, (two blocks), and take the alternator off and read the warrantee tag for the date -who knew? Right! Of I go, come back, the battery is about two years old and has a three year warrantee tag on it, she threw my alternator on the test machine, said it worked, I had a car with a separate voltage regulator, and I needed a new one; $6 bucks change and thank you very much! Took my alternator and $6 dollar part back to my car, assembled it, jumped it off, and let it run for about twenty minutes; turned it off, it started right up! I was in luv! I patronized that store for the next 4 years, through three cars, and never felt the lack- then they got successful and started letting all the "smart" expensive help go; I got my first taste of incompetence from an arrogant "new" manager brought in to replace my auto parts lady- screwed up my alternator, and wiring on my car by giving me the wrong regulator, and then claiming it was my fault.Chief's went out of business a couple of years later, and couldn't get anybody to buy their stores for the price of dog bisquits! There must be a moral to that story- I wonder what it could be; because American employers don't seem to have learned much in the 30 years since then!FR

Okay, so that first story really makes me mad because my 15 year old daughter is a gamer (PC mostly, but she gets down on a console too) and she's really good. In fact, she's the current reigning, defending, undisputed family champion in street fighter, mortal kombat, WWE, roblox, the other PC game where you run across a bridge of some sort and you activate minions when you get to certain obstacles and adversaries and tekken with a combined record of 131 wins and only 53 losses. Granted 48 of her losses are at my hand, but she went on a winning streak since she took my title. She's 47-0.
