You mentioned Sekiro which I got those vibes once I saw the guard bar but I'd that it's an amalgamation of the aforementioned and Sleeping Dogs which I was playing earlier.
I also love the fact the devs decided to showcase Pak-Mei, a relatively unknown style of kung-fu. The style makes sense within the context of this story about revenge, because it’s a very aggressive and erratic looking art.
This really reminds me of a modern take on Godhand, from the combat and use of analogue in dodge to supercharged enemies if you prolong the fight, sweet!
@@sheldonjplanktonn I never got into Godhand. I tried it at a friend's house. Looking back I wish I bought it. I will say that Urban Reign on PS2 is an immensely fun beat 'em up. Probably not as complex as Godhand I'd assume. UR's roots are firmly in Tekken. If you have a PS2 or emulator do try it. It's in my top 5 beat 'em up's easily.
I picked this up a couple of days early and had the Early Access to go along with it. After just 3 hours played, I have to say, this game is pretty killer. This review is pretty spot-on when it comes to the overall package. The graphics are nice enough; simple but effective. The animations are simply stunning. You'll get the odd thing here or there, but you know, it's still a video game. The sound is, honestly, just average. I enjoyed some of the music along the way, some of it was a little different. The voice work is, admittedly, pretty middling. I do agree with the sentiment toward enemy voicing though. The game play, though, is right where it's at. The fluidity of motion and control throughout is, as described in this video, pretty much one of a kind. I've been looking for something like this for a long time now, and finally, I think I have it. Obviously, like anything, it's not perfect. But, if you're looking to almost literally play a role in your very own martial arts masterpiece, this is the ONLY place to be. It wildly succeeds at what it sets out to do!
It is 100% influenced by Oldboy. Sifu is a love letter to martial arts movies. I truly believe this game could be genre defining similar to how Dark Souls was in 2011.

What really baffles me is the sound design of the hits. Absolver did it so well and compared to it the punches just sound lacking. Like they really could use more oomph.

I'm not sure if I'll pick this up or not. My reflexes aren't that great so I'm not very good at these hard games that require a lot of dodging and parrying. But man, it is _so_ refreshing to see a game with an actual sense of artistic direction. So many games these days always go for a bog standard "realistic" art style. I miss when games were more stylized, like with cel-shading and other things. And those animations are _smooth._
@@adad87821 yup once you perfect just simply avoiding attacks and manage to make space once multiple enemies surround you, it's level of difficulty comes down. And they already show you how to effectively beat every boss in tutorial. In the first level, i beat fajar just without dying once because he mainly uses upper attacks which can be dodged by spaceber+s XD, and they show you that in tutorial.
When I first saw this game I was intrigued by it. The vibe and style is just so cool. I'm definitely picking it up in the future. I just have a massive backlog of games I need to work through.😄

Gonna say this, even tho some people might think I'm being pedantic: this game is about kung-fu and Chinese culture, so the music and instruments are Chinese (heck, the composer is Chinese) not Japanese, also even tho "Kata-型" might be technically the correct terminology if you're Japanese, is kinda of context here. Why this matters in a videogame review? Well, how relevant is your review if you lack basic understanding about the main theme of the product. Granted, theme is only one aspect, and arguably not relevant to gameplay, but a little research and knowledge wouldn't do any harm, in fact I bet the Chinese people behind this game would probably appreciate not being mistaken w/ Japanese. (Mistakes based on ignorance, specially when is about foreign/exoctic cultures, are not offensive per se, but recognition and appreciation are always welcome) Apart from the above, solid review, as usual.. keep on w/ the great work... Some enemies “appear” to be invulnerable to things like sweeps, but you just have to figure out how to break them down. It’s part of the beauty of this game’s combat.
You can feel The synchronization of beauty and energy living up to the quality of the game being expressed in your review. I always come to ACG first! The intro tutorial with the red background and the music really impressed me. I only just started, of course, but digging it so far.
Gotta say, it might be a beat’em up, but there is a high skill ceiling with this game. It rewards players for controlled, calculated gameplay and those who really take the time to think through how they want to engage each encounter.

I think it will be just fine as we have Dying Light 2 followed by Sifu then HZD FW followed Elden Ring and then Grid Legends all of which are different types of games. It's shaping up to be an awesome year even if some of the games aren't to my taste I'd day there's something for everyone.

Quick tip you can easily sweep them after a successful parry or you can throw them into another enemy with X + Square to give you a break and to control the crowd a bit
Hand to hand combat fighting games are my favorite genre of games. Even though it’s single player, it’ll scratch that combat itch that I have right now.

1:40 that’s the hallway scene from ‘Oldboy’ not ‘The Raid.’ Classic if you haven’t seen it. Edit: also, there’s an avoid mechanic that goes along with the manual dodge that Karak seems to have missed. It allows you to avoid & counter strikes without stepping out of range.
Honestly I was stoked when I first heard the premise, less stoked when I seen the art direction (not a fan of the cartoony look) but back to stoked now that I see the movement and gameplay. This game with a more realistic art direction would be close to my dream game, but this might just do for now, looks fun.
The first play through is a constant fight for survival. But as you grow in your skills and age, you become much more observant. Running through levels will seem like a distant memory, as you look to fill your detective board and uncover the mystery as to WHY your father was killed. It makes the next play throughs completely different in tone and you yourself as a player changes too. Damn I love this game.

The dual sense implantation is really good on the ps5 version. You can feel the rain drops and all the impacts. Very happy to see 3rd party developers go the extra mile.

It doesn’t seem like anyone knows that you can hold LB and move your Left analog stick (while stationary) in any direction to dodge … literally stand there and just spam that and no one will be able to hit you, UNLESS they sweep
The time the camera went sideways for the hallway just after the start of the game gave me Oldboy 2003 vibes! I wish that fight was longer or saved for later but it made me giddy
February just keeps on getting better. Too many games, not enough days! Horizon, DL2, SIFU, elden ring! Not to mention I want to check out the new Pokemon, just started deathloop (why did I do that), new season of Apex Legends, AND steam deck release! What a wonderful problem to have
Despite the criticisms, I still love Sifu… a lot. It’s the type of game that’s designed for a specific gamer, and if you fall into that category, then it’ll be perfect (or close to it) for you. As always, a very fair and well balanced review. 👍🏽
Great review as always! Only thing I see I don't like is my god, that solid white design choice in the menus is terrible. Doesn't match the game aesthetic and is also going to be really jarring in a bright room. They could have used any of the nicely aged, textured light beige wall/wood textures I saw there to great effect as the background instead of solid white. Other than that, it is a game I was interested in and will be picking up at some point - February is just too jam-packed.
As ever a well thought out and interesting review. Always a first port of call when I’m looking to find out about a game. Would be cool to hear the game when you’re referencing the music and sound but still a great review 👍

Yep! One of the main devs is also a legit Bak Mei student, and he got his sifu to do the Mo Cap.
Also way better for game design since each packet of animation is shorter than something like taichi. Short strikes

Godhand was definitely underrated. My favorite thing about it was you could create your own move sets and combos. That elevated the experience for me.

I’m so excited to play this later tonight but everyone has been saying it’s harder than Dark Souls and is going to scare people off. I think this game will be big on PC with streamers.

It doesn’t seem like anyone knows that you can hold LB and move your Left analog stick (while stationary) in any direction to dodge … literally stand there and just spam that and no one will be able to hit you, UNLESS they sweep
The time the camera went sideways for the hallway just after the start of the game gave me Oldboy 2003 vibes! I wish that fight was longer or saved for later but it made me giddy
February just keeps on getting better. Too many games, not enough days! Horizon, DL2, SIFU, elden ring! Not to mention I want to check out the new Pokemon, just started deathloop (why did I do that), new season of Apex Legends, AND steam deck release! What a wonderful problem to have

Despite the criticisms, I still love Sifu… a lot. It’s the type of game that’s designed for a specific gamer, and if you fall into that category, then it’ll be perfect (or close to it) for you.

I pre-ordered the moment you compared Sifu to Sekiro. Really pushed me off the fence there.
💯😂 Sekiro is THE ish. The back and forth deflects against bosses like Genichiro, Owl, and Isshin, was really adrenaline pumping.
Great review as always! Only thing I see I don't like is my god, that solid white design choice in the menus is terrible. Doesn't match the game aesthetic and is also going to be really jarring in a bright room. They could have used any of the nicely aged, textured light beige wall/wood textures I saw there to great effect as the background instead of solid white. Other than that, it is a game I was interested in and will be picking up at some point - February is just too jam-packed.
You see the live Sifu trailer dropped by PS yesterday? I like the premises of the game. I think it will do well.
As ever a well thought out and interesting review. Always a first port of call when I’m looking to find out about a game. Would be cool to hear the game when you’re referencing the music and sound but still a great review 👍
Quick question:
1. When you die, do you restart at the very beginning of the game, but older? Or do you age, but start at the same point you died at?
2. If you start at beginning if you die, can you at least skip the areas you already cleared?
