Honestly the game's optimization on pc is ridiculous. It looks like Arkane's recommended hardware to brute force decent performance since this game runs off Dishonored 2's void engine which still has issues to this day. The game's visuals don't justify its overblown requirements.
The last part makes me think about the whole next-gen debate. People will say demon souls is a truly next gen game meanwhile Red Dead 2 exists and that's a larger and truly open world, which I think looks better graphically. Cyberpunk, that looks nice but the actual scope of the world and just how little it does, doesn't warrant it running as badly as it does on last gen when you consider gta v ran on the 360(framrate still sucked a bit, but it sucked while having decent driver and pedestrian AI and traffic, better lod on slower harddrive and weaker CPUs, better physics etc It all comes down to optimization and the game engine being used. Because deathloop looks like it should be on PS4 too
Love that you took the experience of playing Dishonored vs playing Prey into account when you brought up the ways you can customize in this. Those games and those mechanics are the reason why I look forward to this so much. Great review.

ACG does fantastic reviews, but reviews are meant to give you multiple opinions from different perspectives in order to have you form your own conclusion on what you find fun and how you spend your money. You’re doing yourself a disservice using one reviewer as gospel and ignoring everyone else.
In all honesty, I am just happy that arkane tried something new here. Blending prey: mooncrash's rogue nature and combining with the 2nd unknown player they tried with their canceled 'the crossing'. It very well may not be for everyone but experimentation leads to new ideas.
Its actually not that new or derived from mooncrash it goes way back to the crossing, a game i was hyped for that never saw the light of day. I think this game wasn't as focused or had as strong a sense of self as the crossing would have had and suffers from arkanes post mainstream success as being the studio who made dishonored. If you want to know more about the crossing NOCLIP did a documentary on YT last year that revealed some new info and is really well produced.
@@Ashamedofmypast Yeah, I had seen it a around a year ago. Of course I am not putting this at the same context as crossing since this game is a mixture of stealth, rogue and 'the crossing'. So yeah some of the identity might get diluted in the process. But at the same time, I do respect arkane for trying out something different in each of their games, not every game will regarded the same as their previous entries and that's understandable but that lets them to think again and change it in a cohesive manner ( as I mention the similarities between mooncrash and deathloop, they used this dlc's ideas as a foundation for this game, however shaky or strong it may be).
@@Ashamedofmypast That's true. My thoughts are more that it would've been pretty easy to just create Dishonoured 3 and take a decently successful game. Instead they tried to combine aspects that worked in prior titles into something new.
@@ne90316 true, in the end this games issue as far as I can tell is the inherent immersive sim elements and the crossing weren't brought together as cohesively as we would have hoped.
I also love the Splinter Cell-esque text in games. I think it's such a cool way to tell you something important. Very comic book like and I love it when games do that.

Yeah I remember coming across this channel a while back and it feels weird to say this about a video but the cadence and "meter" of the guy's speech made the videos I tried watching borderline inscrutable. Even this one feels like he read a script where someone removed all the punctuation marks before handing it to him for recording.

From what i've seen this game is nowhere near a 10/10. I'll check it out when price has dropped and maybe i'll be surpised, maybe i will be like: was right.
Hence why I waited for this review in particular before even considering buying it. Given the fact that there are other titles I'm interested in that's coming out in the next few weeks, I'm definitely passing on Deathloop for now. Thanks as always Karak!

Sadly same, I finally grabbed Outer Worlds and I'm looking for another new game to split my time with... This one isn't screaming at me since I never really loved the Dishonored games and couldn't get into Prey for whatever reason, I don't think this is bringing anything groundbreaking to the genre and can't justify dropping full price on this. I'll wait for a decent sale and grab it then most likely.
This review, while not wrong just gave loads of people reason to not buy an Arkane Studio game yet again. And I am oissed off about it. There is a reason why the AI is dumb here. They have made it dumb because they want to make it easier for the players to discover clues and not make the game all bout combat. That is not the point of the game. They believe many players will have hard time joining all the clue and finishing the bigger objective. That is the focus. People slept on Dishonored. People slept on Prey. And now people will sleep on this one too because you thought this is supposed to be dishonored or prey. No it's not. It uses the mechanics of those games. But it is not those games. The art style is right on par with other Arkane games. It doesn't matter what texture load. The 'unloaded' texture is unimportant. The important thing is plot and gameplay fused together. Buy the game for that.

Most reviews for last of us and BoTW are 10s but I disagree with both. TLoU was completely boring and BoTW was missing those amazing dungeon designs and bosses and had to much filler dungeons that were the same thing over and over to unlock the classic tunic. Anyway it’s just how you yourself see the game and reviews are just a view point not to be taken to seriously.
its really weird to see people not accepting someone's opinion just because they aren't an independent YTer. Let me tell you, I watch SkillUp stuff too and his reviews have been butt fucking insane at times. I've bought at least one game on his recommendation and I almost felt lied to.
I think it depends what you're looking for. ACG seemed upset there wasn't a variety of guns and player upgrades, which is fair if you're looking for a specific type of gameplay. But as someone who played Dishonored powerless and just stalked people from above and took them down like some Batman/Ninja...I think this game looks like a 10 to me

Seriously? There were so many left bottom corner to full screen transitions that it kept taking me out the review. It could have been cut so much quicker and cleaner. The gameplay should also follow what is being discussed. It felt random and even had the one blink ability on pretty much the whole video and i did not get a feel of the world or sandbox like a couple other reviews.
I want this but I just can't justify it when I know it will be on Game Pass as soon as the PlayStation exclusivity is over. Not worth $60 to me when I know it will be "free" within a year.
The absolutely fantastic DualSense implementation makes the PS5 version the definitive version. The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are done impeccably well
Yes honestly pc doesn't know what they are missing without the dual sense I told my friend how nice the triggers are he didn't get he is like I still like WASD lol I'm like there's no haptic feedback tho. But I bet pc will be paired with that woofer haptic feedback belt thing would be a good jdea maybe
@Davin Goodman I get that a lot of PC Gamers prefer Mouse and keyboard. But the Dualsense controller is the one true index generation experience that's available this generation. Playing the 10 or so games with Incredible dualsense controller implementation is a completely new and next level experience. Astros playroom and returnal to name a few, but recently Resident Evil 2 remake did a brilliant job with it on the PS5 version.
@@davingoodman871 it's absolutely amazing, I've never played anything quite like it. The controls are incredibly fluid and responsive, the moment to moment gameplay is just an absolute joy. And it takes place in a dark sci-fi world, reminiscent of Metroid prime. The game is basically Flawless in my opinion, and one of the best games I've played of the last few years

The Prey Mooncrash DLC is good, its got a loop too, but it is not pvp, and the way the loop gets harder the longer you play is fun. Plus it has a singing floating lootbag robot that follows you around.

(really dissapointed on the mention of bad AI, I really dont understand how developers keep making shitty AI in their games when its one of the biggest growing industries and we even have AI technology that can compete on an esports level with players but when it comes to singleplayer games for some reason the ball always gets dropped, and hard.)

I like Prey a lot. The Dishonored games less so even though I appreciate what Arcane did with them. The trailers for this did nothing for me and the roguelite/loop games get really annoying really quickly. The really high scores this has been getting is definitely tempting me though.
Was really looking forward to a more challenging stealth game so the call on the AI is a deal breaker for the moment. Hopefully they'll add a some difficulty options and patch out some of that enemy jank by the time it goes on sale. Thanks for the honest take. Saves a lot of time and cash.
Brilliant in-depth review. One suggestion would be to inject some footage to illustrate the points you make, especially the audio related ones (like the sound design, or the faulty proximity audio). You're presenting this in a video format anyway, might as well make use of it.
With Outer Wilds being one of my all timers I have high hopes for another 'Live, die, repeat' genre game. I'm hoping this is a combo of that and dishonoured
You should give the Forgotten City a try, if you haven't already. It's a time loop game done well and with a bigger emphasis on problem solving than combat.

The more I see about the game the more it feels like "the Mooncrash DLC for Dishonored". Maybe Mooncrash was a test if there is any need for such games? You had to find the perfect run through multiple playthroughs in it as well, and it had linear storylines for the playable characters instead of your targets like in Deathloop.
@@PaNDaSNiP3R I tried to say that it is the equivalent of Prey's DLC for Dishonored (as the look and feel of the game is much closer to that one). I kind of think that Mooncrash might have been a proof of concept for Deathloop, and it got released because it was fun, and a good way to see if there is interest. But it might be just my mind coming up with conspiracies :D.
So this game really is poorly optimised cuz no way in hell the CPU and GPU requirements line up with what's on screen. Still, I like the fact that Arkane tried to make something similar yet something new.
As some have theorized it's probably because it's designed to have two players in the same world so it needs the extra oomph to render everything twice. It's a cool idea for sure but definitely not executed well.
I usually agree with your critiques, but I think this game is an evolution of Arkane's game production. The more I play, the more I find the love and wonder about. I think it will birth a new franchise, hopefully, and the team's creative vision should be even more full and cohesive if a Deathloop 2 comes.

I’m playing through this game and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. It’s a fun fucking time, and it doesn’t hold your hand when it comes to the information in the world. You gotta actually explore, pay attention, and figure it out.
Being someone who worked at Intel for a few years trying everyday to find cases/games where the faster the CPU, the better game performance I found that you can run games just fine with a CPU like 5 or 6 gens behind before you start getting bottlenecking
You don't need to work at intel to know that. It's basic knowledge since console are the lowest common denominator for the majority part of a gaming generation. And hence, the game optimised for the less powerful cpu. But this generation we got 8core cpu, so we shall see how games change as years progress

good review, but a quick note. the raytracing requirements you listed on pc are for 4k. you should do fine with ray tracing at 1080p with say a 2070 super
Because it might very well be GOTY for a lot of people, this game is clearly not for everyone, either you click with the concept or not, and yet i really think games like that should be more popular and more critically acclaimes in general. It seems the game clicked really with a lot of people and Arkane more than anyone deserves that praise.
Not sure if he is in this case. Virtually every other review I have seen of this game has been called it a potential GOTY. Its currently at a 90 on Metacritic as I write this.

Sad to see that what is essentially an extrememly watered down version of what Arkane usually does so well. Which is what I had feared from the moment it was announced. Even worse to see it getting so much more hype and praise then those afforementioned greats, which makes me fear they will only go more in this direction in the future from now on.

That's the way to go. Bought Dishonored 2 on launch and legit couldn't run it due to all the tech problems. Just started it yesterday and it runs significantly better and you can get it for a fraction of the cost.
I appreciate the honest review, and it sounds like what I thought it would be. Always a shame when bad AI has such an obvious impact on gameplay and fun factor. This seems like a game that would be a lot more enjoyable if the AI was ruthless.
The AI is intentionally easy since players are going to loop over and over and this say they don't have to feel like it's repetitive or tedious. They can just get back to where they left off relatively quickly
I always figured that distance to npc (even through walls) causes an intentional audio effect so that you can always hear Important audio when npcs talk. Simulating a higher/louder sense of hearing since it usually happens only around npcs and Important characters. That way it's easier to hear them talk, they may have Important information the player needs or should have. I still would prefer properly mixed audio.
I feel like I enjoy the theme of this game with the aesthetics and music and stuff, but I just don't think I'd enjoy playing it. I don't know what it is about it that doesn't hit me the right way, it just seems off.
For me I think it’s the movement. It looks really stiff and looks like you’re weighed down. Like ACG said, the animations don’t look really good, and for me that stuff matters a lot. I feel like if the movement was way smoother and if it had clean animations, it could make the gunplay so much better.
@@TheProphegy Yeah I feel like it's probably that and the hands constantly being stuck out in front of you at all times that are bothering me the most. There's still something else there though that's somewhat intangible for me that makes it seem a little jank from a viewing perspective.

Now, for me, this is when Sony's price hikes start to become truly prohibitive. This is exactly the kind of divisive game that I might sink £30-40 into and not be too aggrieved if I didn't take to it. But for £60 on my digital PS5 (so no chance of my money back), forget it - especially when I have Series X sat 3-feet away from it, where I can play Deathloop next year for no extra cost whatsoever. Absolutely agree with this one. It's a very experimental game and they knew it would be. And honestly, I appreciate that. But for 60$ leaves no room for ambiguity; it's a very hefty pricetag I feel is only justified by the highest quality in production. Had they released it for 40$ I would've picked it up if only for the fact I enjoy the premise, but charging 60$ just feels like arrogance. I'll be waiting for a sale.
Dualsense is pretty fcking awesome in this game. Designed for the ps5. Maybe buy it after a price drop on ps5. And I bet after a year it will come in to ps plus.

I did enjoy it mostly but it wasn’t flawless at all, and those flaws become all the more glaring when you keep remembering you spent £70 on a singular piece of entertainment. If it had been £40, I’m sure I would’ve overlooked a lot more in it than I did. Anyway, given you know who has its hands on Arkane’s purse strings these days, I’m not sure how invested Sony will be in Deathloop so it could well be on a hefty discount by Christmas, I reckon.
I love this game so far I’m just starting out in it and it can be incredibly frustrating at times but now that I can retain my weapons I imagine it’ll be way better going forward
I have a gift card right now and I’m very tempted to buy this at 30 based on friend recommendations. Also re8 is 30 this week too so I have a lot of thinking to do and one gift card.

Only 2 hours in and it's not really grabbing me so far. Had it pre-ordered as I love Dishonored and didn't mind Prey, but my expectations were just moderate for this based on the trailers. I may be out of the loop but I've noticed a different feel to your more recent videos, you speak a bit slower and whole review feels less hectic because of it. Yeah I remember coming across this channel a while back and it feels weird to say this about a video but the cadence and "meter" of the guy's speech made the videos I tried watching borderline inscrutable. Even this one feels like he read a script where someone removed all the punctuation marks before handing it to him for recording.

From what i've seen this game is nowhere near a 10/10. I'll check it out when price has dropped and maybe i'll be surpised, maybe i will be like: was right.
Hence why I waited for this review in particular before even considering buying it. Given the fact that there are other titles I'm interested in that's coming out in the next few weeks, I'm definitely passing on Deathloop for now. Thanks as always Karak!

Sadly same, I finally grabbed Outer Worlds and I'm looking for another new game to split my time with... This one isn't screaming at me since I never really loved the Dishonored games and couldn't get into Prey for whatever reason, I don't think this is bringing anything groundbreaking to the genre and can't justify dropping full price on this. I'll wait for a decent sale and grab it then most likely.

This review, while not wrong just gave loads of people reason to not buy an Arkane Studio game yet again. And I am oissed off about it. There is a reason why the AI is dumb here. They have made it dumb because they want to make it easier for the players to discover clues and not make the game all bout combat. That is not the point of the game. They believe many players will have hard time joining all the clue and finishing the bigger objective. That is the focus. People slept on Dishonored. People slept on Prey. And now people will sleep on this one too because you thought this is supposed to be dishonored or prey. No it's not. It uses the mechanics of those games. But it is not those games. The art style is right on par with other Arkane games. It doesn't matter what texture load. The 'unloaded' texture is unimportant. The important thing is plot and gameplay fused together. Buy the game for that.

Most reviews for last of us and BoTW are 10s but I disagree with both. TLoU was completely boring and BoTW was missing those amazing dungeon designs and bosses and had to much filler dungeons that were the same thing over and over to unlock the classic tunic. Anyway it’s just how you yourself see the game and reviews are just a view point not to be taken to seriously.

I think it depends what you're looking for. ACG seemed upset there wasn't a variety of guns and player upgrades, which is fair if you're looking for a specific type of gameplay. But as someone who played Dishonored powerless and just stalked people from above and took them down like some Batman/Ninja...I think this game looks like a 10 to me

Seriously? There were so many left bottom corner to full screen transitions that it kept taking me out the review. It could have been cut so much quicker and cleaner. The gameplay should also follow what is being discussed. It felt random and even had the one blink ability on pretty much the whole video and i did not get a feel of the world or sandbox like a couple other reviews.

Yes honestly pc doesn't know what they are missing without the dual sense I told my friend how nice the triggers are he didn't get he is like I still like WASD lol I'm like there's no haptic feedback tho. But I bet pc will be paired with that woofer haptic feedback belt thing would be a good jdea maybe
@Davin Goodman I get that a lot of PC Gamers prefer Mouse and keyboard. But the Dualsense controller is the one true index generation experience that's available this generation. Playing the 10 or so games with Incredible dualsense controller implementation is a completely new and next level experience. Astros playroom and returnal to name a few, but recently Resident Evil 2 remake did a brilliant job with it on the PS5 version.

@@davingoodman871 it's absolutely amazing, I've never played anything quite like it. The controls are incredibly fluid and responsive, the moment to moment gameplay is just an absolute joy. And it takes place in a dark sci-fi world, reminiscent of Metroid prime. The game is basically Flawless in my opinion, and one of the best games I've played of the last few years

just seems to lack identity in comparison to dishonored and prey. almost like a standalone dlc for one of them rather than fully its own thing.
The Prey Mooncrash DLC is good, its got a loop too, but it is not pvp, and the way the loop gets harder the longer you play is fun.
Plus it has a singing floating lootbag robot that follows you around.

What concerned me about the game is that IGN have given it a 10/10. That was an instant red flag and made me seek out this review haha.
Yeah very sus. All youtube reviewers have talked about how lackluster the AI is and how unimaginative the abilities are given the premise of the game, yet IGN mentioned NO negatives in their review. Very sus.
The game apparently is very fun, but yeah that would also concern me. I liked GOT and that game was far from perfect.....but reviews just allow us to avoid "buyers" remorse.

I like Prey a lot. The Dishonored games less so even though I appreciate what Arcane did with them. The trailers for this did nothing for me and the roguelite/loop games get really annoying really quickly. The really high scores this has been getting is definitely tempting me though.
@A & G I played both of them (not the expansion). I do like the creativity as I said but they didn't do it for me overall and definitely have issues.
Prey was amazing and I felt the Dishonor games were good.

Brilliant in-depth review. One suggestion would be to inject some footage to illustrate the points you make, especially the audio related ones (like the sound design, or the faulty proximity audio). You're presenting this in a video format anyway, might as well make use of it.
With Outer Wilds being one of my all timers I have high hopes for another 'Live, die, repeat' genre game. I'm hoping this is a combo of that and dishonoured
You should give the Forgotten City a try, if you haven't already. It's a time loop game done well and with a bigger emphasis on problem solving than combat.

Have you tried returnal? It's a fantastic ps5 game where you restart when you die. It's brutally difficult (at least for me) but it was fascinating.
Outer wilds was such a pleasant surprise for me. Such a journey

The more I see about the game the more it feels like "the Mooncrash DLC for Dishonored". Maybe Mooncrash was a test if there is any need for such games? You had to find the perfect run through multiple playthroughs in it as well, and it had linear storylines for the playable characters instead of your targets like in Deathloop.

@@PaNDaSNiP3R I tried to say that it is the equivalent of Prey's DLC for Dishonored (as the look and feel of the game is much closer to that one). I kind of think that Mooncrash might have been a proof of concept for Deathloop, and it got released because it was fun, and a good way to see if there is interest. But it might be just my mind coming up with conspiracies :D.

So this game really is poorly optimised cuz no way in hell the CPU and GPU requirements line up with what's on screen. Still, I like the fact that Arkane tried to make something similar yet something new.

Prey suffered under the same but grew well over a few patches.
As some have theorized it's probably because it's designed to have two players in the same world so it needs the extra oomph to render everything twice.
It's a cool idea for sure but definitely not executed well.
PS5 settings don't run max. I'm g anyway got a build with a 6900xt 10900k and a 6700xt 10700k
I remember Dishonored 2 basically being unplayable on my gtx 970, and then even struggled to run on my 1070 back in the day.
100% agree with this review, this is not a 10/10 game like mainstream reviewers are saying, it not a bad game but nothing really new here.
Deathloop to me always felt like We Happy Few in that the concept was great but what is delivered somehow falls short.

I usually agree with your critiques, but I think this game is an evolution of Arkane's game production.
The more I play, the more I find the love and wonder about. I think it will birth a new franchise, hopefully, and the team's creative vision should be even more full and cohesive if a Deathloop 2 comes.

I’m playing through this game and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. It’s a fun fucking time, and it doesn’t hold your hand when it comes to the information in the world. You gotta actually explore, pay attention, and figure it out.
Being someone who worked at Intel for a few years trying everyday to find cases/games where the faster the CPU, the better game performance I found that you can run games just fine with a CPU like 5 or 6 gens behind before you start getting bottlenecking

You don't need to work at intel to know that. It's basic knowledge since console are the lowest common denominator for the majority part of a gaming generation. And hence, the game optimised for the less powerful cpu. But this generation we got 8core cpu, so we shall see how games change as years progress

Because it might very well be GOTY for a lot of people, this game is clearly not for everyone, either you click with the concept or not, and yet i really think games like that should be more popular and more critically acclaimes in general. Sad to see that what is essentially an extrememly watered down version of what Arkane usually does so well. Which is what I had feared from the moment it was announced. That's the way to go. Bought Dishonored 2 on launch and legit couldn't run it due to all the tech problems. Just started it yesterday and it runs significantly better and you can get it for a fraction of the cost.

I appreciate the honest review, and it sounds like what I thought it would be. Always a shame when bad AI has such an obvious impact on gameplay and fun factor. This seems like a game that would be a lot more enjoyable if the AI was ruthless.
The AI is intentionally easy since players are going to loop over and over and this say they don't have to feel like it's repetitive or tedious. They can just get back to where they left off relatively quickly
I always figured that distance to npc (even through walls) causes an intentional audio effect so that you can always hear Important audio when npcs talk. Simulating a higher/louder sense of hearing since it usually happens only around npcs and Important characters. That way it's easier to hear them talk, they may have Important information the player needs or should have. I still would prefer properly mixed audio.
I feel like I enjoy the theme of this game with the aesthetics and music and stuff, but I just don't think I'd enjoy playing it. I don't know what it is about it that doesn't hit me the right way, it just seems off.
For me I think it’s the movement. It looks really stiff and looks like you’re weighed down. Like ACG said, the animations don’t look really good, and for me that stuff matters a lot. I feel like if the movement was way smoother and if it had clean animations, it could make the gunplay so much better.
@@TheProphegy Yeah I feel like it's probably that and the hands constantly being stuck out in front of you at all times that are bothering me the most. There's still something else there though that's somewhat intangible for me that makes it seem a little jank from a viewing perspective.

Now, for me, this is when Sony's price hikes start to become truly prohibitive. This is exactly the kind of divisive game that I might sink £30-40 into and not be too aggrieved if I didn't take to it. But for £60 on my digital PS5 (so no chance of my money back), forget it - especially when I have Series X sat 3-feet away from it, where I can play Deathloop next year for no extra cost whatsoever. Absolutely agree with this one. It's a very experimental game and they knew it would be. And honestly, I appreciate that. But for 60$ leaves no room for ambiguity; it's a very hefty pricetag I feel is only justified by the highest quality in production.
Had they released it for 40$ I would've picked it up if only for the fact I enjoy the premise, but charging 60$ just feels like arrogance. I'll be waiting for a sale.
Dualsense is pretty fcking awesome in this game. Designed for the ps5. Maybe buy it after a price drop on ps5. And I bet after a year it will come in to ps plus.

I did enjoy it mostly but it wasn’t flawless at all, and those flaws become all the more glaring when you keep remembering you spent £70 on a singular piece of entertainment. If it had been £40, I’m sure I would’ve overlooked a lot more in it than I did.
Anyway, given you know who has its hands on Arkane’s purse strings these days, I’m not sure how invested Sony will be in Deathloop so it could well be on a hefty discount by Christmas, I reckon.

I love this game so far I’m just starting out in it and it can be incredibly frustrating at times but now that I can retain my weapons I imagine it’ll be way better going forward

I have a gift card right now and I’m very tempted to buy this at 30 based on friend recommendations. Also re8 is 30 this week too so I have a lot of thinking to do and one gift card.
Really interesting review as all the gaming sites are giving this game a perfect score. I’m more inclined to take this guy word on the game. I lose more and more trust in gaming reviews from ign and gamespot.

Well with the middle of the road reception of this game, im really only interested in Kena, Battlefield, and Jurassic World Evolution 2 for the rest of the year.

@@wumbobumbo9382 yeah, only thing i don't like about battlefield is the specialist and grappling hook but otherwisw it looks like bf4 (same graphic fidelity too lol)

Thanks for the review, I'm tired of buying highly rated games and feeling underwhelmed when I play them, conglomerates are reviewing Deathloop and giving it a flat out 10 out of 10.
Only 2 hours in and it's not really grabbing me so far. Had it pre-ordered as I love Dishonored and didn't mind Prey, but my expectations were just moderate for this based on the trailers. Then the reviewers dropping 10/10's like nothing last night gave me some hope. But now, barely feeling the motivation to continue :(
