Pixel 8 IS Getting Gemini Nano... Did Google Try to Screw Us?!

- Google said that the Pixel 8 would not be receiving it's first ever on-device AI model, Gemini Nano AI, due to "hardware limitions". However, magicaly the hardware limitations have been cured because Google announced today that now the Pixel 8 will be receiving Gemini Nano AI, in the next feature drop in June!

They watched your video Adam. 👍
I actually think they did lol
They definitely did.
Yeah they're starting to piss me off. I did link that video in the "send feedback about this device" on my phone. I'm sure plenty others went at them too. They tried to pull an Apple.
I totally agree with you! @@TechOdyssey
Great job Adam. Google thought we'd just accept their explanation and only changed their minds when they saw the pushback.
Thank you. 🙏🏻
Just curious, Google never officially said in their channels that Pixel 8 is not getting Gemini nano right? It was only extracted from an interview with some engineer from Google, which was never widely published.
Is a Google engineer in an interview saying it's not getting it not good enough?
@@TechOdyssey Lot of people say lot of things these says. I personally don't like to believe something unless it's officially stated.
@@TechOdyssey Not necessarily since it could be something at the time of what they're trying with. It's not just one engineer that is working on the features. It is something to take into consideration but not taking it as law. I was trying to find an interview or a quoted statement by the engineer and could never find it just reports on an engineer saying it, I'm no journalist but did try to search. But all in all unless it's officially stated by google as a statement or paper documented Don't think it's enough. You can go with the news you hear but can't say they lied if they never officially said it.
@@hemajith223 Yup for all we know they could have meant they're running into a hardware limitation with the current build or something / running into issues and said it how they said it.
The fact that they've changed their mind though, means they probably were trying to have us over.
A very suspicious, and curious decision
@@TechOdyssey Doesn't do their reputation or trust factor any good certainly.
@@Gary0557 people will have forgotten about it in a month... World moves fast.
@@hieveryone2003 Silly comment mate. Grow up.
@@Gary0557 I'm sure you replied to the wrong comment.
"Hardware limitations": what a load of BS. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 both have 12Gb RAM and Tensor processors. The speed differences between G1, G2 and G3 is relatively small. Now Google have announced Pixel 8 (with 8Gb) is getting Gemini Nano. It's all completely artificially tiered by Google, nothing to do with hardware capabilities.
Who said there was a hardware limitation? Because Google didn't...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In the made by google podcasts, they said something about wanting to be sure it improves your experience. Maybe they werent finished testing if it would work on the 8.
Then they shouldn't have said it had a hardware limitation and couldn't until after they made that determination
I don't know that they've backtracked as they made no official announcement that the 8 wouldn't get Gemini. There is some mention that it may not run as smoothly as the 8 pro tho. Again, not officially, lol.
Edit: Still waiting for the enhanced zoom feature that WAS officially announced. That would make them liars.
👍
My thoughts exactly as well and also lol waiting for enhanced zoom as well
My question is if if it's not working properly the way it should then why are they bother to release it to the public?
I'm happy that my Pixel 8 will get the features that the Pro will. I wasn't that bothered at first, but it became more about the principle for me. Don't know if I'll ever use the AI features, but nice to know I'll have them, if I want to use them. The 8 is a good phone. Solid. And the fact it's getting this support is probably down to videos such as yours, so thanks 👍
Hopefully this means I get it on my 7 pro too then.
Pretty doubtful in my opinion
@@TechOdyssey 😭
Barely made it to 8 keep dreaming for 7 pro 😅(even if it has more RAM)
Now considering getting the 8
Great content. It's the same thing samsung did to us with the brightness. They gave the iPhone 15pro max 2000 nits of brightness while giving the s23 ultra 1,750 nits of brightness.
I think they will shorten the batch size which will as u said result in less understanding of the context and so to weaker and less accurate results and when ever it fails, it either go back to using internet or give a general answer simulate to what google assistant was doing.
Stick to your guns big dog...your making a difference!
Doing my best! 🫡
Adam I think Google watched your Google rants 😂
It's quite possible
Here's the thing with the 7 year support. Im not expecting 7 years of feature support, im expecting 2 years max, with the rest just being version updates and privacy support. I also expect the 8 to NOT get the same features as the Pro version. There HAS to be something. To differenciate the 2 models. Which the pixle 9 brand will hopefully fix (if the leaks are to be trusted) Google are alway shsooting themselves in the foot evwr since they decided to move on with the tensor chip. Its a perfectly fine chip, but now theyll have to figure out what feature should go to which model...but again, i hope the 9 fixes these issues....by the time the 10 comes out and theyre STILL having these issues, than thats gonna be a major trust issue there.
Thanks!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Now I can use my pixel 8 in peace lmao😅
What case do you use for your phones?
Generally Spigen liquid air
Will you be making a review of any of these phones : Samsung galaxy A35 5g or A55 5g?
At this point, unknown
The A55 isn't coming to the US from what I've seen
You are giving Google a lot of credit. I tend to believe they wanted it to be a Pro feature (and hardware limitation was BS). They got a lot of flack and backtracked.
Hey, what's the phone case brand you're using here?
Spigen Liquid air
Google has a big problem communicating with their customers. Most of these problems could have been prevented with better communication.
Can you do a review of the ASUS Zenfone 11 ultra.
If I can get one
Just my opinion but I really don’t think there is a hardware limitation at the moment. You might see constraints with ram in the future but for right now, Gemini Nano doesn’t seem to have enough functionality to be bottlenecked with the available RAM yet. That could change quickly as functionality is added and the model evolves.
They really tried it with y'all! Played in y'all's faces! That's DIRTY!
Not on my watch!
😎💪🏿❤️@@TechOdyssey
Sounds like Google's going to have to bump up the RAM on all future pixel phones.
That would be the logical solution, but my guess is it won’t happen
Google annouced it would be coming as a "developer preview" in a "future feature drop" folks will still need to enable "developer options" in the settings, just to be clear. It would be great if you could do an performance comparison betwen the two phones as a comparison.
"Google has said it requires a lot of ram to do its LLM and all that stuff on the phone, I truly do believe that, but my thing is, I believe the pixel 8 should be able to run it anyway" (with less RAM) LOL
The THING IS: you're omitting user experience. Maybe less RAM has a direct impact on performance. Glad it will at least be in the developer preview to try out though.
no matter how they did it, i'm just glad they're releasing it for the base pixel 8!
There was lot of pushback from Android authority, verge, youtubers which was addressed in their made by Google podcasts. Most pissed off users will be compact phone users.
Adam i doubt your theory about memory management. Android or Linux out of memory OOM on Android 14 is much better. Then again by default 2GB is allocated as zRAM or swap file. The problem is inference does take up lot of Ram. Eventhough they download minimal onnx file or their proprietary storage format. One other possibility will be to use rust based interface just to be memory efficient and better multi threading
Im glad you covered this i left a comment in your previous video earlier today when i read this. It makes you wonder why they lied and said it was a hardware limitation and now there isnt one? Lol
It's magic.
@@TechOdyssey must be lol.
See you got all worked up for nothing raising your blood pressure you need to calm down a little bit keep up the good reviews I enjoy your stuff.
Or maybe because I cared it made a difference.
Nice video
I got the 6a and 7 when I said ok Google it popped up and asked if I want to switch to Gemini ai. I agreed on both phones so is mine the one your talking about or what. My assistant name is bard.
I think all phones should get circle to search
It's the principle of the fact. That they so smoke and mirrors with the pixels. Drives me nuts. Their entire PR team is atrocious. #stillteampixel😡
Have anybody turned on their AICore on their 8 pro?
I appreciate your dedication to uploading man!
For sure. Gotta make sure yall are up to date on what’s going on!
May be Google caught so much flak that they had to back track and make it available on the Pixel 8.
Maybe so
Thank you mate 👍🏾❤️🎉
No problem 👍
Does pixel 7a get the Gemini ai feature, pls anser.
It should get the Gemini AI app
@@TechOdyssey thanks, pls do a video on pixel 7a Gemini app in detail, if possible, thanks once again
Got 6.1 on my s9 tablet today but my flip 5 still on 6.0.
Sweet!
If there was really limitation they have tell that at the launch of the 8 and advice to take the 8 pro
Exactly the same thing as what Samsung is doing it's absolutely ridiculous and disgusting
Huh?
Not giving their old devices updates to the new AI updates.
Samsung is giving some stupid reasons that there old devices s22 can't handle Ai because of hardware limitations now I see Google doing or saying the exact same reason
@GavinMufclee I believe the s22 series can't run it though. For one it had terrible battery life and wasn't very efficient.
@@GavinMufclee The s23 FE has thr snapdragon 8 gen 1 and can only handle like 1 feature lol.
That's why you wanted the best brother. Keep up the good work. I appreciate it
I appreciate that
I feel so "bamboozled"
Such a good word
If you have an 8 you should feel great..
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
WTF is google doing? I am genuinely confused.
I think Google is confused lol
They were trying to push people to buy the Pro but suddenly realized this would hurt their Pixel 9 sales because a lot of us were considering switching to Samsung.

I feel Google's marketing division has had too much influence on the direction of product development for the past several years. I despise all those within their team who have NO passion for the stuff enthusiasts/ PROSUMERS like.
I'm not surprised most of that team is woke Desi women: just look at the Gemini generated female pope : looks exactly like a Desi / South Indian woman.
@@Vamanoz Not sure which one is worse, your racism or your misogyny. Either way, you should seek help.
Or maybe that anonymous "Google engineer" was just plain wrong 😂
See seeing as he is an engineer for the generative AI on the Pixel phones I would think he knows what he's talking about.
Thank you for making this video. I was just about to purchase a Pixel 8 pro.
Glad I could help!
What the fish man!
It makes companies look bad when they start to play games cause who knows what they may try next.
so disapointed! samsung S23 alrady got the new update and now running the software as the S24! regret buying the pixel fold
Thank you for speaking on behalf of the community and making a big deal about it.
Funny story, I purchased my Pixel 8 a week ago then I opened my Pixel 6 just to be informed I would be missing out. Almost canceled my order, so happy they decided to go back on that BS!
They didn't. They never ever said it wasn't getting Gemini
google should be more loual to their own products and the people who purchase their products. i think google and youtube should give products to pixel owners for free that other people have to pay for
In the past two weeks, I needed to buy a new phone. I was looking for the Pixel 8 and was interested in buying it. This entire story totally made me change my mind and in the end got the S23 Ultra with the latest AI features for a little more than $600 almost brand new. They lost a lot of customers with this simple mistake.
That's a great deal. I hope you enjoy it
seems go me a company like google would know better than to do stuff like that.
You would think
💪💪💪💪💪💪
My question is did they ever officially announce that the pixel 8 wouldn't get the feature?
It was disclosed be a Google engineer in an interview that it couldn't because of a hardware limitation. Do with that what you will.
Answer is no.
They didn't at all..
Amazing that Apple fans don't do this more often . Amazing they haven't done this with 60 hertz phones in 2024 alone
🐑
There is a catch though: "While the Pixel 8 Pro will get Gemini Nano as a user-facing feature, on the Pixel 8, it's only being released as a developer option." Google said it is a hardware limitation Pixel 8 Pro 12 GB vs Pixel 8 8 GB. This will definetly limit it's reach. The average user doesn't turn on or even know about developer options.
There’s no catch. It’s in developer now for the beta it will be available in June they said.
@@TechOdyssey That's not how I interpreted Google's Seang Chau, VP of devices and services software messaging. If you copy the sentence I quoted above into Google you can find and read the Ars Technica article.
@@ShawnLangford the way I had understood it was that it would it would initially be made available for developers mode in beta and then for everyone in the June feature drop. I could have also read a bad article, but that was my assumption
Conspiracy theory. Hear me out... What if Google saw the pushback and they realize that the pixel 9 was jeopardized and now they're coming with. Yeah now it's going to be available on Pixel 8 too so they can sell the nine but after the pixel 9 they're going to come out and say you know what AI doesn't run well on Pixel 8. So it's not going to have it anymore?... Probably they're going to think that all those pixel users are going to dish the 8 and get the 9.
The need Google OS, not Android. separate from android. avoid the lawsuits from other companies. competing with their own customers
Just bought the pixel 8, stumbled across your channel a month ago. Most Informative channel in this space! Thank you 😁
One plus just give me an update
Nice!
My iphone 14 gets so hot when i play warzone and after 4 months the ios feels so boring that i want to switch to android so badly thats the only problems i found with iphone 14
So are iPhones I still can’t stop laughing ❤
What power you have
If only… 💪🏻
Every big business always trys to push the boundaries as to what people will ecept when u have something tht people r addicted to useing or needing for ur everyday use a smartphone is like shoes to nearly everyone who has one ,, Google is trying to get pixel users as dumb as apple users getting less for more
it's a bad look when a tech company makes something that won't run "nano" in it.
Lol. Yes.
Will the Pixel Fold get Gemini Nano?
Doubtful
because a lot of ppl was going to sabotage them for that decision... like was so stupid like why?
You are the MAN TH-cam watchers need to subscribe to you because you are HONEST and have an authentic take. Love you brother ❤️⚡️🤙
Eh, i think you're forgetting the purpose behind the brand, its not actually to provide a "google experience" its a big fancy beta test, in exchange for using thier hardware you get access to features before everyone else. The idea that Google is gonna have the most powerful hardware out there is not realistic, because they're a software company. Im reminded of a quote from John Rettinger about 10 years ago, buy the phone that gives you what you want today, not the phone that might give you what you want 2 years from now.
Your logic makes no sense
@@TechOdyssey you just clearly irrevocably validated the criticism that the crackberry community levelled against you regarding your involvement in the whole OM debacle. There was nothing in my original comment that was personal, and for what' its worh, generally speaking I like your stuff. But for a guy who makes his living interacting with an audience, this is pretty juvenile.
Here's a shorter version... Google uses the pixel to test the market for new features that will be rolled out to the masses if they catch on. If I was Google and competing in the hardware space was their primary interest,I would either charge so much to license my software that everyone said forget about it, this is too expensive. Or I wouldn't anyone else get certain features, they're rolling out this stuff to other companies because their primary concern is broad adaption of the OS not competing in the hardware space... Either way, dismissing your fan base instead of trying to engage in conversation and exchanging ideas, is childish. Have a nice life
Hardware limitations my ass, they were gatekeeping features and tried to pull an Apple on Pixel users. It massively backfired and now we all know they were lying. Good job Google!
Why do i feel like Google watched your video or something? Lol. A strong voice with a few people listening can be a powerful thing.
Maybe so!
The Pixel 8 is getting AI because Google has entered into an agreement with Apple to provide AI engine for them. Naturally, Google doesn't want to upper cut it's own product line while helping Apple sell more phones.
Thank you genuinely from all Pixel owners.
Google watches anyone who keeps the pressure on.
We enjoy your activism, frankness and for keeping Google under the microscope.
Samsung and Google have been bedfellows for ever. It's too bad the 8 series isn't power by Snapdragon then it would be one step closer to a true flagship. Instead we got Samsung's leftovers.
yeah, Gemini models will also not be able to run on iPhone 15 Pro Max because of 8 GB ram, or wait, the ram restrictions won't apply there because Apple does things differently?
lol. Right?
They didn't change their mind you overreacted, Google never confirmed the pixel 8 wasn't getting the Gemini nano lol like I said in your original video. For whatever reason you went on a Google rant and now it's biting you in the butt.
lol. Man you’re funny
Lol funny but true

gotta call out these companies for them to make changes. thx
Seems so!
Good,They got grilled and found a workaround.
Extremely well-thought out video!
Do you think they are going to nerf it on purpose? To try and make people believe that they were telling the truth
Will be interesting to see
Beware of the "7 years support" trap. The hardware might not keep up with new tech.
My guess is that the Pixel 8 was out selling the Pixel 8 Pro 😂
I don't think so.
would be my guess too, doubt it as well tho. they prob tried to give the "pro model" a better selling point compared to the normal 8 since most features except 1 or 2 are pro exclusive which are mediocre features anyway, they kinda shot themselves in the foot there, instead of just giving more free cloud space or google vpn for pro only model so many option but they didnt. speculation 2 (& more realistic) is they made nano for the 8 pro in mind - 12gb ram requirement & in early development unfinished/unpolished code runs dirty so it does need more ram which the normal 8 wouldn't do at all efficiently.

Sweet!
AI enhance zoom feature is more preferable than Gemini nano AI at this stage but each to your own.
Not the topic of discussion. It's not an either or proposition. It is silly it isn't here yet though
they saw the bullying on reddit and regret
Lol
Seriously doubt it but yeah ok 😂😂
I love Google products but I do agree with you. Something is definitely up with this. Good video
