- Google needs to give up on the Google Tensor chips and start using the Snapdragon chips again. The Google Tensor G3 and the Tensor chips are a failed experiment that are designed to power Google's AI, AI Models, and process machine learning data and it can't even beat Samsung and other platforms running Google's own AI. Samsung and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is more capable and beats Google without the hardare limitations running Google's own AI models and software. It's time for Google to give up.

it is the third year that we are saying " next year will be better ". If you ask $900+, it must be better. Not next year, but now. You are right, time to give up if they can't produce a chip that can do the very thing that has been advertised for.
The other big negative of the Tensor SOC is the modem. Qualcomms modem just runs circles around Samsungs
Yup. It’s been sorely neglected for 3 years now. It’s “ok” now but has caused some serious problems and Google keeps using cheap modems
What does the modem do?
@@kab1r Connect you to the internet and let's your phone do it's most basic and sought function - make phone calls. Cheap modem = no signal = trash phone.
Yup, the modem in my Pixel 6 Pro heats up the phone to the point that you can't have a video call longer than 5 min while using data at ambient temp of 24c.
Not paying the snapdragon license fees and pouring more money into R&D which is not producing a better customer experience is going to drain the pixel line. Do not get me started on the modem.
The modem is honestly even worse than the CPU
Maybe its time to question what actual benefit AI brings to a mobile phone. I'm starting to feel like it's just hype, a selling point that really isn't necessary. Its like: here's new features that you don't really need but because we want to sell more phones every year we have to come up with a plausible reason you need to own the latest and greatest.
That's exactly what's going on with smartphones right now. They're running out of legitimate reasons to sell smartphones.
AI is simply a software feature. Nothing more than is already being done. They've just gone from calling it a new feature to "AI"
There is zero reason for a price increase on the Pixel when the OnePlus 12 is defacto the same price as the regular Pixel 8 with double the base storage.
That's a good point
It's criminal to start off with anything less than 256GB.
But it's OnePlus....old people phones

I'm sure the seven years of updates is why they increased the price

Exactly. I’ve been saying this chip is no good since the pixel 6. What’s the point of buying a fancy car with a bad engine?
The s24 in the UK with the exynos 2400 and 8gb ram runs all the ai stuff no problem
I'm on a pixel 6A. And won't leave that phone until maybe pixel 10 or 11 I see no point in upgrading when the performance isn't much better than what I have now
Was in same boat until found a pixel 7 at a very low cost
Man the pixel 8 pro is much better than the 6a. The battery life is better and charges at 30 watts. I had to get a new phone after the 6a because of how long it took to charge the battery
Depends, if that’s all you know then sure, but those using higher end phones especially in fast paced professional settings would definitely notice the difference. Particularly battery.
I went from a 13 Pro Max to a Pixel 6 Pro and could immediately tell the difference.
30 watts is slow! @@joerosales6117

Agree don't understand why they gave their software exclusives away.
Because they can't make money selling phones😅😅😅😅😅😅
Money and also the competition Microsoft/ChatGPT would have loved a deal with Sammy.
Also, if they go back to Qualcomm, they'll be getting much better modems as well, esp when it comes efficiency(which will add to a lil bit better battery life just for having a more efficient modem).
They did accomplish one positive thing for Android with Tensor. When Google started promising extended software support beginning with the Pixel 6 they forced the other Android manufacturers to follow. And when they further upped the support with Pixel 8 they forced them to follow again.
They could have done the same thing with the snapdragon chip, but better
@@TechOdyssey I read Qualcomm was part of the problem too with updates. Maybe Tensor brought them along as well?
@@wscott9779 Google lied, Google ditched Qualcomm cause Samsung offers a cheaper alternative in Tensor.
I'm willing to be patient with the Tensor project. Looking forward to the Pixel 10 Series.
Do you know the price difference on what it costs Google to put the Tensor chip in compared to what it would cost to put the Snapdragon Gen 3 in. 👍
I haven't had any problems with my Pixel 8 Pro & Pixel Watch 2. Both have been just as fast in my daily usage. The Pixel 9 is gonna be even better. Chips made by TSMC are usually 30% faster than Samsungs. So Pixels future looks bright.
Google should have worked on their chip & perfected it before releasing it.
They just need to make a better chip
Why would Google do that when Pixel fans are stupid enough to believe Tensor is still good year after year?

What a rollercoaster for the 8 line
I think Google, by their actions - marketing what they can't delivery - is announcing that they are leaving the the Google phone business. It's what Google does. Once consumers begin to incorporate and depend on a Google product or service (example GBP) they discontinue said product or service. Google has the resources to compete, they simply lose interest and move on, short notice. Maddening.
They are good at leaving people high and dry
@@TechOdysseysounds like Microsoft and what they did to Windows Phone. I really liked Windows Phone OS. I think a 3rd phone OS made Android and Apple work harder on their software development.

The call-screening feature on Pixel 6 Pro is the biggest feature I miss since switching to the S24 Ultra, I wish we had it on the phone.
It's probably the main reason I keep using a Pixel. Call screening and all it does is really really good.
@@jaywright9635yup! Call screening, now playing, Pixel's always on display, although simple, works the best as far as brightness and being able to see the information at a glance. Just how helpful the Pixel phones are (especially the 8 Pro) it's the new PDA of today and is very helpful and just does everything you need it to right as you need. Benchmarks mean nothing and Pixel phones are amazing at their current status and they seem to be getting better and better as we go.
Same. I'd trade all the features that Samsung offers with the 24 for just call screening. So much that I'm tempted to just sell my 24 and go back to a Pixel. I never had any issues with my Pixel 7 pro or with the tensor that lot of people complained about.
@@hobbitpsi exactly. Tensor works just fine. And my Pixel 8 Pro is superb compared to my s23 and s23u. Those phones are kinda boring despite having all the features they come with..
Time to go back snapdragon been asking for years. The processers and 5g modems are way better.
It's strange because a lot of people have said that they have had connection issues, but I never had that with my Pixel 7 pro. It had full bars 5G all the time and never once dropped any calls. The only time it ever did have connection issues, was because AT&T didn't recognize the IMEI of it and that was fixed with a phone call. After that, I never had any issues. Now I don't know about the Pixel 8 because I went to a s24 when I upgraded, but tbh I'd trade this Samsung for a Pixel anyday.
The only issue that I have with the Tensor line is modem efficiency. The arc of development is weird though. The Tensor G1 is overall a more powerful SOC than the G2 (the G2 was more efficient). The G3 is significantly more powerful than the G2, but it feels like they lost a year, when Tensor G1 was already a year behind for CPU performance and efficiency.
I have no intention of having my pixel 8 pro very much longer. The tensor is crap.
It's really not, it's just not what you use a phone for. Pixel phones are and have always been very user specific.
You make very good points the whole deal with the tensor is it would run AI better than the Snapdragon and that's turned out not to be true, what we get with the tensor is a slower modem and a processor that heats up at times and worst battery life than the Qualcomm chip.
Yup. Exactly
@TechOdyssey, I was wondering when you would get to this video. The fact that Samsung uses the Snapdragon chip in one particular phone speaks volumes. The Tensor falls behind in benchmark scores... which I couldn't care any less about, but it is lazy when you run it side by side with other processors. I truly believe they should look to Qualcomm going forward. Samsung is great but I don't think their chips are on that level of Qualcomm.
My thought is that Pixel/ Google is using their phone users as a mass software testing program. They don't seem to really care about the actual phone.
When I owned the 7a it did feel like being a beta tester whilst not actually being enrolled in the beta program. Lots of new stuff and lots of bugs/software updates making the phone worse. I never got the feeling that tensor was underpowered, just badly optimised so you got stutter when scrolling in many apps. The very capable camera sometimes ruined the photo with over processing in what should be good conditions for a photo. Took great photos in bad dark conditions yet couldn't cope with daylight. Very odd. AI probably thinking hang on you're taking a photo of a dog, let's wack up the contrast and make his grey hairs stand out!
They're moving to Tsmc with a 3nm or a rumored 2nm and it'll be fully Google with no Samsung. This is rumored to be on the pixel 10 series.
Edit: it's still so far away. I read somewhere the reason they didn't use Tsmc last year was "demand issues"
Supply issues mean there's not enough. Demand issues just mean as long as there's a demand for Pixel phones they'll continue to have issues. Boycott Google for a better product.
By then WW3 would have started and no one cares anyway. Also tsmc would be no more.
I'd be curious to see if they could work with Mediatek. The 9300 matches snapdragon in benchmarks.
Great content. Here's a question. Has anybody commented on how samsungs own 2400 series chip is doing with the AI🤔
Thank you. I don’t have any experience with it so I can’t comment on it
@TechOdyssey I know you can't. But you can ask your audience to comment on it. If they are willing. Thank you.
@@jeromegold3216Im South Korean and i have S24 plus with the Exynos 2400. I think it performs well with the AI stuffs, but I'm also curious to see how it compares to the SPD 8gen3.
Yes 8gen4 all the way
The custom built chip was a way to cut cost.
In my experience having the s24 ultra and pixel 8 pro, the AI seems to be ever so slightly more capable on the 8 pro vs the s24. Is it worth all the negatives though? I don't think so. And my negatives include overheating, average battery life and challenges to keep up with intense gaming.
The tensor ain't going away and I'm fine with that. I think it's good enough and I'm sure it brings the overall cost of the phone down, benchmarks don't mean anything at least to me at this point. I don't think Google cares much about the pixel selling at least they don't care as much as they do about Gemini for example and I'm fine with that as well. I like pixels because they don't cost too much and they run great. I'm sure at some point the tensor will match snapdragon and that probably will be when they ditch that Samsung chip they use in the tensor
Benchmarks are the last thing I care about and I’ve defended it on for the last 6 months. The issue is the reason this chip exists it to be able to run all of Googles software and AI which it can’t do or can’t barely do and other chips do it better. If this custom chip is supposed to be the best for it and can’t compete with other brands chips then what’s the point?
@@TechOdyssey the overall cost is the only point I could think of. I would say security but I'm not so sure because pixels used the titan security chip before with snapdragons so that security chip isn't exclusive for the tensor

Hey Adam. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I hear what you’re saying. I currently have the Pixel 7 and I’m considering switching over to The iPhone 16 pro. Especially now that it’ll be a 6.3 inches tall which is the sweet spot for all phones. Let’s see what happens. I usually wait a least a month before I buy any phone. This is due to the bugs that come with the software.
Yes agree
I'm currently using a moto razr+. Its got the 8-gen1. As old of a chip as it is, i feel like it's faster than my old pixel 7Pro. I have a pixel 8, and even that phone doesn't feel as fast as my razr. Im no Motorola fan, but its just how i feel. I think Google created their own chip at sub-par performance just to save money.
That's no new news. By making their own chip they are saving money, it's why they're doing it that way. Far as the razr running faster, that would probably be more the modem as opposed to the SOC. I had the Z Flip 5 as well as my Pixel 7 pro and I'll say that the Pixel was far more snappier than my flip 5 was. Honestly I'm a bit sad that I sold my Pixel 7 pro so I can pay for my upgrade while also trading in my z flip 5. Cause now on an s24 and personally, I'd trade all the features on this Samsung for just the call screening feature on the Pixel.
I second that. The 8 gen 1 in my Sony Xperia 5iv is smoother than the tensor 2 in the pixel 7a. Its consistent in all apps whereas tensor 2 is great in some but lags/stutters in others. It feels like it isn't properly optimised. Not sure if it's GPU or CPU. Then there's the modem that eats battery on 5G. Not too bad on 4G. But I can leave my Snapdragon 8gen 1 on 5G and not use much more battery. Most of the AI gets done in the cloud anyhow.
How fast is fast? You can quote benchmarks all you want, but what are you gaining? What differences do you notice? Do you play video games that require that massive amount of processor speed or are you a user of just social media and text messages?
I was able to test 5G with maps running in the background along with Bluetooth music streaming on the car. It held up much better than day one Android 14. At least pixel 7 seems to hold the clocks consistently for sustained performance than the March update. Less thermal issue. I could say they tweaked the core clocks similar to Sultan kernel config and geekbench 6 scores seems inline with Sultan even in ambient temp above 34c in India
I have some wild theories, hear me out. What if Google is not pushing hard on the Tensor chip executions due to not wanting to show Samsung their playbook for what an AI chip design should really look like and also Samsung having limited abilities in their current chip manufacturing anyways?
Something also tells me Google is going to target healthcare pretty aggressively and the future of Tensor may play a role there once they're no longer in bed with Samsung.
Also I wish they marketed what's been accomplished with the current tensor series and previous in a more informative manner. For instance, how you mentioned the chip can do facial recognition with a camera. I didn't even know that was due to AI. There should also rebrand or use special terms for there cloud supported features instead of throwing it all under Tensor name.
As long as my 8 pro works I am good to go.
I've had zero issues with my 8 pro. It's snappy and I have great call quality.
I have not got april update on my pixel 8 but got it on the 5a and both are unlocked from google
My first pixel and not please at all bought a 8 pro and have a software bug where my phone is freezing and pixel support know it is software and telling me it is hardware only started after march feature drop
I heard they might be going to whole different chip set next year
Next year Samsung won't be making their chip anymore. It will be TSMC
@@TechOdyssey That's good 👍🏾

I got somewhat fed up with the pixel 7a modem, stuttering when scrolling in some apps and lately the over processing of the camera. So I got myself a 2nd hand Sony Xperia 5iii. Snapdragon 888. It's 2.5 years old yet runs more fluently and photos are much more natural. However easily the worst thing about pixel experience is the updates. You never know if they'll make it better or worse or if you need to factory reset to get the performance back. After a factory reset it performs strongly. But it needed about a factory reset every 2 months to work properly!
Yeah, but if Pixel switches to Snapdragon again would they still be this affordable? Or would it match the flagship Samsungs in price?
I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I see a point from us consumers that you may have missed. Increased competition in the chip market is a good thing. Therefore, I hope that Google will try to catch up with both Apple and Snapdragon.
Competition is good, but they need to quit sandbagging and compete.

My issue with the Tensor is the phone reception, I would lose signal and get the sos thing when my iPhone would have full bars. It would do that like twice a day. I loved my pixel 8 pro but it has to be good at the phones actually primary function. I sold it on eBay and used the money towards the s24 ultra.
I have to agree. It's just not enough to keep up with competitors in the market.
But that forces others to out do them giving us better products.
That's because they have a deal with samsung it will be better if TSMC would be able to produce it. But they have mentioned that samsung did produce a new chip that didnt have overheating
You speak some real words out there 🎉🎉 (I own a pixel 7, it feels more like a branded version of Poco F1)
It’s just funny that they haven’t put a flagship chipset in since the Pixel 4. Performance was amazing but hardware wasn’t great (bad battery, facial recognition, etc). Imagine if they put an 8 gen 4 on the pixel 9 series with the crazy hardware they got now. I think they’d really dominate but I can also see why they’re kinda holding back too.
I think they'll be able to sell at whatever price if they take up Qualcomm or TSMC. Foundations has been set and everyone knows the Pixel line.
It's known that they are just cost cutting until they complete the R&D to have their in-house made chip. Pixel 9 will still have Samsung chip and Pixel 10 will probably have the first google chip.
I understand the point you are making and agree with the argument regarding how is Google planning on supporting for 7 yrs.
That said, I have seem a few videos of people comparing Pixel 8 pro and S24 Ultra with AI capabilities. It is true that S24U is faster but outputs from P8P are better.
So, I would watch if you make videos on where tensor falls short (other than speed and benchmarks instead of day to day usage) since I have yet to see S24U actually beating P8P with when it comes to AI outputs. To me, it looks like Tensor is more fine tuned to Google's AI whereas snap can run the model faster but with worse results. But Google has been a dumpster-fire outside of P8P ;[
At the end of the day, I think it all comes down to cost since snapdragon chips are not cheap. Also, this is looking a lot like FPGAs (snapdragon) vs ASICs (tensor) but FPGA is actually faster in this case just because it is much better SoC.
We will have to wait and see a bit until P8 can run on-device nano and compare to S24 -- both devices with 8gb ram. My guess is that it will be similar to S24U and P8P where S24 will run faster with worse results. If not, then you are right.
Hello from the UK, I love the channel! The SD855+ ran OK for most tasks in my OnePlus 7T, it just started to become a little slow with typical use, I was disappointed with the camera performance compared to newer phones, and the main driver for the change was the charging port became temperamental. In the UK the Samsung galaxy s24/plus models I was looking at were just too expensive with the exynos chip so the pixel 8 pro was the obvious choice to replace my beloved 7T. So far it has worked seamlessly and I have no doubt even if it doesn't quite last 7 years it will last 4-5 years no problem which is no more than I would expect the exynos Samsung s24, or before other parts might begin to fail. So for me the pixel 8 pro is a great deal. Even if it doesn't run the bleeding edge AI tools by the end of its life so long as they keep to their word on android system updates for most features/non-generative AI features I'll be happy.

The main issue with all of the Tensor SoCs so far is their power efficiency. They are extremely inefficient compared to comprable Snapdragon chips and even some Exynos SoCs, which is crazy given that every Tensor SoC thus far has been Exynos based.
Well what do you know it's almost like as if the tensor ai chip line was bravo sierra to sell half baked goods.
Customers are the best way to see if a device is doing well... Google Pixel does not even own 5% of the market share for smart phones... Clearly it's not well received
Google only lived because of Pixel camera for few years now everyone caught up and many surpassed Pixel camera and definitely the video side. Who on earth will keep a google cell phone 7 years come on one in a thousand people maybe.

They're lacking. My Pixel 8 Pro just noticeably lags on things like loading some pages compared to my spouses S23 Ultra, the app launcher appears to crash when switching around between different apps, and it heats up when doing basic shit like backing up a handful of pictures.
You’re holding it wrong
Adam, the tensor does run it better. If you have Samsung you will have to buy those AI features while on the Google pixels, They are free. personally, I will be sticking with the pixel phones because of said free AI and the chip doesn't even have that many compromises. It's a perfectly fine chip. Samsung has an ugly UI and iPhone well it's iPhone. I rather stick with the stock Android experience while receiving my free AI updates, also the argument of The 7 -year support, it is NOT for AI features. you will get most likely 2 years of AI features. The remaining years will be just be update, support and privacy support. That's it. As a pixel phone user, I am not expecting AI features 6 years down the line for my current phone. I will be expecting update support and privacy support. I'm not sure where the 7 year AI feature support is coming from. Google just said that they will be supporting it for 7 years as in privacy and updates, not AI feature updates. Maybe you took their 7 year program as AI features for 7 years? Not me, i undwrstood it as, "you will get AI features for 2 years max and thw remainign years, the phoen WILL be supported with basic update support and provacy support"
I sad that 2 years ago
Smartphone SoC have plateaud in the last 4 years... In real life usage there's no difference for 2\3 of the users.
You know Google... They're in the Data business.
From a business standpoint, it's smarter selling an "Okay" chip that is cheaper but has lots a software tricks. Thats increases profit per unit sold.
The only reason to go Snapdragon Gen3 or A17 is for gaming.
Besides that, most use cases had been plateaud since 2018-19... If you dont game, a Tensor G3 is perfect.
Google is using edge computing for their AI stuff. Which is still important to master, and the future of electronic mobility anyways. That's why the push for 5G/6G networks.
Since AI is pretty much in it's enfancy, they probably invest more in Gemini R&D, there's more money to be made in cloud computing and licenses than selling phones.
Probably Tensor G5 or G6 will have more On chip Ai processing. But not a priority for them now.
These are appetizers. Real Ai stuff on mobile is yet to come.
Google still wants a piece of the smartphone pie. They own the Android platform.
The Pixels are an R&D sandbox for now. Yet they're still the best in image computing and UI.
I'm pretty sure after the G5, things will get real serious for Samsung and Apple...
They have the data... They just need the Marketing genious.
10:15 Well guess im going from a P6 to an S 24 Ultra, i really wanted to stay with the Pixel line..not now. The only thing that will suck is paying extra for the AI features.😞
If I could give this video 100 thumbs up I would. I got destroyed talking about this 2 years ago when the tensor first came out. As someone who has most of the popular flagship processors that has come out in the last 3 to 5 years. Tensor and Exynos are my worst. If Google used a current Snapdragon flagship chipset along with their current algorithms for AI we might have a true iPhone competitor. They should just use a custom Snapdragon chip similar to Samsung and other oems.
Has the show me 14 ultra uses a mediatek chip and is not a slow phone
Finally someone is saying what everyone knows. I felt the difference so massively from moving to my s23 ultra from the 7pro. It couldn't even keep up with the dictation. Sorry influencers, Y'all are lying
Well, Google owns TH-cam so consider the source. These influencers lie to keep getting favor from Google.
Pulled my pixel 4a out of the closet (currently with oneplus 11, left pixel 7.) . The pixel 4a still running smooth like new on a snapdragon 730g
Tensor vs Mediatek?
Maybe they should go for a top mediatek chip
I don't think many care about ai and even less understand the point of it. I certainly wouldn't want to pay hundreds more just to get a phone that does it well.
I think everything you said I agree with except for the price point if they go with a different chip, I say this because the One plus and some other phones with serious impressive performance that came out this year already has proved that high price tied to the chip to be negative or a misconception and a marketing scam. To me every smart phone above 1000$ is over priced no matter the capabilities or chips in them, even though I use a samsung ultra anyways. My thoughts though.
I don't think Google needs to kill tensor. I think consumers can make their own choices and if a Pixel fits their needs then that's fine. AI features aren't mature enough IMHO to justify the expense at this point. I have a Pixel 7a for travel purposes when the size and camera are all I need. I probably won't buy another Pixel as I feel the S24 may fit my needs better going forward. But that's me.
I'm looking for a new phone. I REFUSE to go for a Exynos Samsung (not keen on Samsungs bloatware either). I WOULD go for a SD Pixel, but, obvs, they don't make that. I HAVE considered the Thinkphone or OP11 or 12 though... 🤔 And... To be honest... I don't care about all this 'AI stuff'...

I would give the Trensor a pass, if Google didn't increase the prices close to $1k. It should be priced cheaper.
They should’ve never increased the price
Great video, i do disagree my pixel 8 works flawlessly.
I plan on buying the pixel 12 or later, cause by then they should have their shit figured out
Google went back on what they said about Gemeni not coming to pixel 8, it now is...
Abandoning the chip is a bad idea, down the line this could drive market improvements across the board as the chip improves.
Realistically other than battery life & efficiency (which will improve with tsmc) there isn't a real significant benefit to using another chip
You’re assuming that it improves. We have three years of it not improving.
@@TechOdyssey of course it's improved! Albeit only minor improvements but that's to be expected when there's no major change to the manufacturing process.
But that's the case with most chips, even if tensor is behind in yearly improvements right now, moving to tsmc and a 3nm node will more than likely see a much larger improvement.
Realistically there isn't all that much left out from tensor compared to snapdragon, and the gap will only continue to close
Hasn't your son just gone over to a Google pixel 8 pro he asked wonderingly 🤔
"Gemini Chip" incoming - G chip
Keep making these vids. Maybe they will pay attention.
Same goes for samsung with exynos, tensor is just a crappier version of exynos.
Wish I'd have never bought the 8pro. Doesn't work nearly as well in the connectivity department as my old iPhone 11 pro max that I unfortunately traded in.
I just bought the s23 for the same price as the Pixel 8. The heating issues that they were still having like my Pixel 6 just turned me off !
I have Pixel 8. It is not overheating at all. It gets hot when charging or while recording videos but no crashes.
We have gotten to a point where more computation power on a smartphone is irelevant, we are running out of usecases (except of gaming) where you would need all that horsepower. Frankly in the modern world I just want to buy a smartphone and not care about upgrading in the next 5 years, the googles promise for long term software support is just that.
Google g4 is going to be amazing same specs has uk s24 😎
Agree, after three years and seeing how the tech world is moving...the conclusion to be made is that there is no real purpose for the Tensor existing today lol. Maybe they thought differently in 2021, maybe that was a different climate and thought process, but at this point they need to cut their losses and move on. Snapdragon is too far ahead to waste time and money pursuing. They're like two generations behind and Snapdragon is showing no signs of slowing down
As long as the tensor bases on exynos it will be 💩
google won't do that ! wait until tensor 5
