None of us need watches. Our phones do a better job at telling the time than any watch ever could. Therefore watch purchases are unnecessary toys, which means they are emotional purchases. I'll put it like this, if I wanted to buy a car and had $115K budget I would buy a 911 every day of the week and twice on Sunday over a Tycan or any other EV. The things we don't need but want, make us feel something and at least for me that's what I mean when I say quartz lacks soul.

One of my favourite watches in the collection is my Omega 2265 and it is a beauty, Always reliable and always there to pick up whenever I need, You buy and wear what you love because no one else really cares, and how often does anyone ask about the movement they just want to see the dial and the bezel and the bracelet and have no clue how the time is actually powered

    In house=servicing monopoly
Longer power reserve=more unnecessary wear on your movement
Everyone should have at least one quartz, always the right time and much more shock resistant.

6:50 its the idea that you give some of your energy (manual wind or auto-kinetic) to keep it going. This is what people refer to when they talk about 'soul'. I had a 9F quartz, sure it's accurate, but so is an Apple Watch. My 9F quartz felt like any other quartz(besides the finishing ofc), it leaves an empty feeling.

Wore the quartz Tissot PRX today. Nothing wrong with grab and go.
Citizen eco drive promaster divers are spectacular.
I love mechanical and automatics like all of you but there’s nothing wrong with a quartz piece!

For me at least it comes down to a couple of things. Mechanical with it's wheels, springs, pallet fork, escapement etc etc - it's just much more romantic and dare I say it interesting than quartz. It's like comparing a steam engine to an electric train or a Spitfire to a jet. One feels alive, romantic, nostalgic and dare I say it like it has a soul and the other though clearly technologically more advanced does little to stir the emotions.
The other reason is simple. I can buy a quartz for a couple bucks in any mall or even the $2 shop. Of course not all quartz movements are made equal, but this undoubtedly has an effect on my perception of quartz.
Also regarding an automatic mechanical I remember as a kid I was totally amazed when my dad told me his watch was charged simply by wearing it. I think from that moment on I was kinda into watches 😂

If the so called lack of soul of quartz watches means that I will never have to pay for service them or fix a broken part then I prefer my soulless watches everyday of the week. The only thing that matters to me is the appearance , the quality and the reliability.

💯 correct, I bet you never knew quartz was bad until some one told you it was. I'm also betting the majority of us started with a quartz and only moved totally onto mechanical when we went further down the rabbit hole. I think a mixture is the way to go personally. Interesting video.

GS are my preferred brand. Over the years I've owned 2 GS quartz watches. The seconds hand of my SBGX343 never hit the markers between 2 & 7. I sent it into the Seiko service center here in the UK & was told it was normal & not classified as defective. I'm hoping to pick up a Chronomaster at some point & hope to have better luck with that.

I mostly agree. Yet I believe some watch enthusiasts find mechanical watches more attractive because they’re a marvel, the different parts working in sync to produce a beautiful result- that’s why quartz movements seems less of a mechanical marvel. So that marketing got much less to do with what they desire, basically.
I took my father’s automatic watch when I was 7 and took it apart with a hammer- to look inside. I think Swiss marketing did not have nothing to do with it..😉😊

Much of cartiers current line is made up of quartz watches unfortunately. Don’t think there’s anything wrong with quartz but for the prices their charging everything should be automatic

How is 1989 considered neo-vintage? In my mind that is several years into full vintage status

Actual the Grand Seiko being the hybrid is most interesting movement around with the smoothest of all movements. Is it a quartz or an automatic? 🤔

      @TheRandomWatchDude  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Definitely a hybrid in my books 📚

I believe it is not quartz or mechanical rather it is more how expensive the watch. The more expensive the better the watch. So when you own an GS Quartz it is fine and if you own an FP Journe Elegante it is even better. I mean there are Chinese Mechanical movement too, but due to they are inexpensive, they are considered as shitter. An ETA/ Sellita 3 hands + date movement costs you around $150 but having the same movement Tissot sells between $350-$1000 and Bell & Ross or Tudor sells the same movement watches at $5,000 and they are considered as better watches then the Tissots. So it is not question of meachanical or quartz and rather how much you are paying for your watch.

I think that mechanical watches can outlive the owner if properly serviced, rather than the quartz watches last about 20/30 years, because of the components.

It's not because quartz lacks soul - it's because mechanical lacks batteries.
    And that's a feature, not a bug.
Especially in a world where every household appliance has a chip inside.

Rolex did produce a quartz model from 1979-2001. The Oysterquartz must have been a success during this period. For some collectors Rolex may be the epitome of mechanical watches but it really isnt and they have a bad reputation.

Hi Mark I'm surprised you like quartz watches most collectors of high end watches don't like quartz. For me the only time I would consider a quartz is for a historical reason in a watch collection to explain the history and evolution of watches. It really depends on what you want a watch for if it's for looks accurately and just telling the time then quartz are for you. But if you look a watch as mechanical marvel on how someone has made this with out involving power and modern technology and the history of mechanical watch making a quartz seems boring (no having a sole). also I look at a watch as a peace of jewellery and as jewellery there's can be big differences in quality and price.take a real diamond verses a lab diamond the lab diamond is just as good maybe better but people still value the real diamond a lot more it's the same as high end watches and on top of that take into account the brand that's why most watch collectors have mechanical watches. do you think the same? Thanks John.

I for one think that decorated movements look rediculous.

Quartz is banal and boring. In-house movements are overrated but then ETA/Sellita/Etc movements are somewhat boring. Watch hobby is a way to escape boredom.

Ahh yes the escape from boredom or worse still; even more expensive hobbies!
