  • As a mechanical watch enthusiast, I have always resisted the temptation to join the dark side and buy a smartwatch. But as I am middle aged, and fickle, I decided to get one to help me track my health!! Here's what I think!! #samsung #watch6 #smartwatch #rolex #gmtmaster2

Hi Mark you've gone to the dark side but a very practical tool especially if you have a health condition.👍

I am very dubious about health tracking. I strongly suspect that seeing data about heart rate, blood pressure etc is likely to make people worry more and is likely to increase stress levels. Likewise sleep patterns, the body generally gets the sleep it needs, some of us need more than others, one thing is sure, lying in bed fretting about missing your sleep target yesterday is a great way to keep awake! How are you supposed to get more or less REM on demand, this will feed neurotic behaviour. As someone who spent years carrying a pager on call for work, I really enjoy being free from people contacting me constantly, and I agree smart watches are ruining conversations daily. Not for me thanks.

Totally it has the possibility of creating stress rather than helping reduce it. However right now for me, it's a very useful tool for educating me on what my body is doing. There will come a time when I won't need to see my sleep patterns daily, but for now I'm finding it fascinating. My health honeymoon?

@@TheRandomWatchDude 😁 I wish my blood pressure was as low as yours without tablets! Sadly mine is high due to genetics rather than lifestyle.

@@dunderhay9169 It's not always been low, and I have had issues with hypotension in the past, so I totally understand what you are saying!

The closest smartwatch line to a classical watch ever was the Samsung Gear S3 with Frontier and Classic versions. By far the best designs ever on smartwatches. We feel them like a mechanical watch. I still use my Gear S3 Frontier and I dont care about the software being outdated. It still works perfectly and using it almost everyday and everytime on outdoor situations still looks brand new. It was last until stops charging (by this rythm, never) and I simple cant find a decent replacement between new models.

The sole reason I don't prefer smartwatches is because they are not very accurate in measuring those metrics. They are great to detect variance (blood pressure/heart-rate/etc) but the absolute numbers are not reliable. As a result this changes their target audience:
    1. If someone wishes to reach a certain fitness goal (resting heart rate always

Very interesting perspective. I've calibrated the blood pressure sensor to my Omron proper device and the watch measures accurately in relation to that now. Also the Steps measuring tool is I think incredibly useful as is the sleep monitoring. There might be more accurate devices out there, but for an all-in-one fairly affordable device I think they're good.

I struggle everyday with wearing my Garmin or my Omegas. Garmin is incredibly useful but is so ugly :)

Agreed. it's an ugly landmine of a thing, but imagine if it looked sexy too...

@@TheRandomWatchDude Have you seen the Garmin MARQ Aviator Gen 2 or the MARQ Commander Gen 2? I have tried to justify its price vs a modest luxury mechanical watch, considering that the latter can last a lifetime and the Garmin a maximum of 10 years (in my experience it is more durable than a Galaxy watch. I used my mechanical watch on one hand and one fitbit band (more discreet) on the other. the problem is that it stopped working in less than two years

@@monnierphilippe0 I gather the Garmin is an awesome outdoor / fitness watch but l liked the compatibility of the Samsung with my phone etc, and just keeping it all simple. however I do think I will be lucky to get 3 or 4 years out of it, unlike a good mechanical!

I bet your bpm and anxiety levels will go through the roof when you are about to hit the sack and have 2% battery left !. I work in mental health , have you considered therapy Mark ?. On a serious note I've got arterial stents , cholestorol levels not great. I take statins, ace inhibitors and beta blockers. Im also of the age that waking up next morning is a bonus , so I dont need a land mine on my wrist to tell me I'm in a shit state. Each to their own , however dunderhay9169 has nailed it on the head.
