Thoroughly enjoyed the review. I own a Laco Type B Flieger, purchased 17 years ago in 2003; the luminous compound on the dial has aged to a buff shade from the original white. Unusual but nice characteristic.

Thank you for the awesome content. A flieger is next on my collection list.
When I served in the Special Forces, we used watches for a number of things that were similar to what the flieger watches were used to do. For example, timing a coordinated assault between two elements that were significantly separated is very important. One part of the assault might be intended to divert the enemy's attention while the main assault commenced from another location. Or, for simpler tasks, such as testing the time fuse for use on an explosive breaching charge. One has to take a standard length of the time fuse, and time the burn rate in order to come up with an average. Then, one cuts a length of time fuse to the desired time based on the test data. So, yeah, accuracy is important.

Nice introduction to flieger watches. i'm a big fan of aviation watches, especially German B-uhren: I started with a 46mm type A flieger from (Chinese manufacturer) Parnis for £99, and was immediately hooked on the style. I quickly graduated to a couple of manually-wound Laco 45mm watches (type A Westerland & type B Dortmund) with that authentic-looking grey, bead-blasted finish; next came a 42mm type A in bronze from Archimede, which looks sheer class. I love the simplicity of those sterile dials: no clutter, no distractions, pure functionality and supreme legibility. Coming forward in time, my next pilot watch was a Sinn 104 - it's my favourite everyday watch! Most recently I've bought a 45mm Oris Big Crown Pro-pilot with day & date complications, which aren't strictly "pure" but make it very practical.
Finally, thanks for mentioning Watchfinder & Co - their beautifully described macro-heavy videos are pure horological porn! :-)

Stowa Flieger Klassik Sport 43mm (type A) from the 100y anniversary edition (2017) - with yellow indices and numerals. No date, no logo, blued hands, 2824-2 top grade mechanism, screw down crown. Runs +2s per day! I just love it. Every time I think about other modern watches - I compare them to the ultra-legible Stowa and they are out of competition.

Thanks for this video..i've been eyeing these style of watches. My great-grandparents fled Germany after the first world war and came to America with my grandfather as a young boy. I just purchased 2 vintage Ruhla watches for my wife and I that were made in the DDR (marked on the dial as "Made in GDR"). Now im looking for German pilots watches..still trying to decide if I want vintage or new watches like you've shown here. Just as a reminder of where my family comes from, why my family fled and what my grandfather fought against in WW2. I love Germany..cant wait to take my family there someday!

German compound nouns can always be broken down into their constituent parts. Be-o-bach-ten = to observe. Be-o-bach-tung = observation. Uhren = watches. The added "s" between the two words is a "Bindung-s", literally a "binding s" to join the two words more gracefully.

    • @manuel_winde
      @manuel_winde 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I got one of each- the 2 cheaper Lacos- and find the type B works well as a cheaper watch due to the busier toolish dial. If you’re spending a bit more than £350/$400 I prefer the type A, but because it’s so simple, a cheaper dial/movement/case and hands mean there’s more to notice (that it’s not great).
Whereas my cheaper Laco Aachen looks great on a brown leather nato with a pair of boots and a leather jacket. Not sure if that makes sense 😄

Great exposition as always, Jenni. The variety of aviator and Flieger watches is truly amazing.
Some big manufacturers have got in on the act: I recently bought an Orient in 42mm with a B-Uhr dial for about $200 from an AD in Moscow. Beautifully made, in-house F6 movement which needs resetting about twice a week, and that dial is so easy to read for my ageing eyes.
Some people here have commented on the origins of the Flieger designs, and the uses to which they were put , with the attendant associations. I heard somewhere that Ted Bundy rocked an Omega. Go figure, as they say in the USA.
For that matter, I also have a Vostok Amphibia and I can't even bloody swim, but it's a fun watch.
Anyway, thanks again, Jenni. Stay well, everyone!

  • @briansc5148
    @briansc5148 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The B dial is so much easier for my quirky brain to read the time. A 2 (definite) step process - first the hour (the hour hand points directly on an hour numeral) THEN the minute (the minute hand points directly at a minute numeral/marker) - thus no need to 'translate' the same ring. The A dial is very clean and legible, perfected really.

I own laco speyer for a year now. Good watch keep accurate times. I usually wear it as a beater so it’s been through quite alot. The crown is easy to grab and control, legibility is an ease when you get use to it especially in the dark. The lug design makes it wear longer than you think but if you have a big wrist then it’s not a problem. The grey matte finish do wear off though but I think it add character and charms to the watch. Will not let it go for sure

Fliegers are my favorite style. Purchased a Stowa Klassik for my Dad because he used to have a pilots license. Stowa was great, and not only was able to engrave the German spelling of our last name on the rotor, but also our family Crest. Awesome company.

@Brian_44 Actually Oestreich. (I'm incognito) But their customer support, and putting up with all my questions and requests was superior to any Watch manufacturer's customer service that I have so far experianced. They were great.

Brian_44 I have a 7.5 inch wrist and 42 is the perfect size. 40 is about the smallest. Depends on what u want, but over 42 might be to big. Just my opinion.

Brian_44 Stowa also uses probably the best Superluminova also. C3 superluninova.

Brian_44 another example of how flexible Stowa is, I was interested in their Bronze flieger, but I really wanted a date window. Stowa said they could put in the black dial with the C3 lume so that I could have a bronze version WITH a date window. Almost no one will do this type of customizing for you. I’m sold on Stowa.

Brian_44 good luck. Whichever u decide I’m sure you’ll love it. I almost kept the one I bought for my dad. :)

I love my Damasko watches, which to me are a modern interpretation of "Flieger watches". Robust, accurate and their ice-hardened steel ensures, that the watch will look like new even after years of constant use in harsh environments.

I want a Flieger watch that includes 24-hour indices like a Field Watch.

Great video 👍 I have a Stowa Classic 6498, and representing a more modern take, a Sinn 104. I really enjoy the legibility of flieger watches.

Jenni Elle, as a German I'd like your opinion, which brand is more reliable for WWII models? Laco or Stowa?

I loved my Stowa, but I sold it because the blued hands looked black in most light. Due to this, I often miss-read the time because the second hand is so prominent. I replaced it with the more modern Damasko DA36 which, after 6 years, I still love.

Laco watches are very nice, Laco 95 has become my daily and it is very accurate.

Interesting video. I do prefer the style of the pilots' watches commissioned by the RAF - like the IWC mark XII for example.

Great video! I love Fliegers and have two Sinn 103s, an StSa and a TiAr Die Zeit Sonderedition. I love the simplicity and clarity of the Stowa and Laco, but I know I'd miss my countdown bezel and chrono functions.
(I also have a Stowa, but a Partitio Handaufzug, not a Flieger).

German date! I love it: Mon,Die,Mit,Don,Fre,SAM,Son ;) I have a seiko skx and a few casios with german days/date (and 21.06.20 instead of 06/21/20 on the casios).

A lot of watch companies are creating new model watches using the model B dial face. I think the original ones were very big compared to the ones made for civilian consumption. I wear the B model and always get looks and questions about it.

I have 1 extremely rare limited edition of 250 pieces by Sinn. The Sinn 757 Bavarian Fliegerstaffel. One of only 30 allocated to North America. I love it, and even more so, I love knowing I'll most likely never run into someone wearing the same watch!

I generally like the understated look that they have. That’s obviously due to the purpose they were designed for, but now they are the least flashy watches out there. I like that about the IWC Mark 18, but it does not contain an IWC in-house movement, which is a shame. It’s otherwise quite nice to be able to fly under the radar 😂 with a watch like that when people confuse it with a Seiko 5. Or a Timex. Was it 20 bucks? Yeah

Thank you for the video. German watches are incredible and deserve far more attention.
They are often let down by poor distribution outside Germany and very hard to see or try them...I am thinking Sinn, Stowa, flieger,...
Hope things improve in the future but definitely an opportunity there to be exploited...
A trip to Germany is a must post covid...
