My Grand Seiko "Katana" with the Spring Drive movement combines mechanical and quartz and is super accurate. I've had it over a year now and I still marvel at the smooth sweep of the second hand.

Many Chinese hommage watches are made very well and are extremely affordable... They often use reliable Japanese movements just as precise as Swiss movements.
grand seiko has only just started selling outside of japan in the last 5 or so years though. it's not by any means failing. they just aren't pandering to the swiss style. it's very japanese, vs seiko, which has a plethora of styles.

Wait, what? Luxury watches are not overpriced? Of course they are. All luxury is so by definition. Their value lies in decades of branding and marketing. Luxury is easy to manufacture but hard to get into as a business for that reason. The likes of Rolex spend incredible amounts of money on advertisement and endorsements since that is what sells watches, not R&D. You could even say their most important employees are their ad copy writers and the athletes that wear the pieces. Those build the business. The technology in these products is decades if not a century old, and it has not been improved since there is no benefit for these luxury brands to do so. The average Rolex customer has no clue what is inside the case - or care to find out, for that matter. They buy it because it is a Rolex. That is why the mechanical watch is the most stagnated manufactured product on the planet. Because no-one outside a handful of watch nerds cares about this ancient technology. It is luxury jewellery for everyone else. And these ultraprofitable businesses know that well. It is indeed the clever marketing that has created this mythof exclusivity and craftsmanship. Rolex makes over a million watches a year. That is the very opposite of exclusive, and the very definition of soulless mass production with no room or time for “craftsmanship”. Which is good for quality control, of course, but no, your Rolex is not exclusive or unique or built from the ground up by craftsmen. It is a massproduced wristwatch whose price when adjusted to inflation has grown ridiculously over the decades, doing so in tandem with the prestige bought by Rolex’s advertising spending.
Rolex has a massive marketing and overhead budgets adding to the price, they are very well built but I would ad to your comment that when pricing one they add a brand recognition premium to it. Simple supply and demand if people want this name on their wrist then they’ll pay for it.
This is what I love about my Seiko "Running Man" watch from 1982, it's got great styling and only gains no more than 10 seconds a month, it's still working and I wear it most days, it's 42 years old and shows no signs of stopping.
I think Omega should have kept their quartz Seamaster 300m. Maybe make it a solar movement so you don't need batteries as often. There should be that choice.
Quartz are also affected by temps: PS "Understanding the water resistance rating of your watch is crucial for keeping it ticking for years to come. To be fair, quartz movements can be affected by temperature but it's not a big deal, a lot of HAQ movements use some sort of thermal compensation to correct small deviations caused by temperature, it only matters if you're trying to go a few seconds by year or less in terms of timekeeping deviation.
I buy a watch because I like it. My most expensive watch is under £450. My faverate is a cheap £19 watch. If it tells the time, it's a good watch. To hell with so called luxury.

Outside of a few of the very most expensive watch models which have fancy complications and hand finishing, the reality is that the vast majority of these expensive Swiss and German watches use very well established and old technology produced in modern industrial factories. The money and innovation goes towards marketing.

The pricing model. Until I got deep into it I always believed it was a massive cash cow and profit must be at least 50% of the price. Turns out with enough research you find most are running at 15% to 20% profit over the range with the exception of Rolex where it’s guessed to be 30% to 35% of the final price. So if a brand has an average price if £10K they would make no profit with an average of £8K a watch which was a shocker for me. The cost of the parts in materials however is incredibly small.
I have ONE Swiss and one German watch. I suggest that a very good criterion for being suspicious: is the watch you are considering a Large Corporation watch? Large Corps invariably use a CEO on Bonus Targets that include Lowering Cost and Establishing Brand Cult Status. Result? Insane price escalation. Lots of very good micro brands out there. Low overhead, ...not using high power marketing to force obsession. The owner walks the manufacturing line. That's WHY the traditional mechanical watches are so loved - that's how the good ones get made. ;)

Singe my Lange & Söhne watch (1815, build in 1996), is back from service, the accuracy is 0 … + 1 s/ 24 h (0 within a week). No chronometer certificate, just fine craftsmanship in design, production & assembly.
Can you believe I have a really cheap SKMEI a Chinese make. I absolutely love it. Taken it swimming, diving, in the sea and the swimming pool. Plus used in a sauna. It's been perfect. Why pay 1000's when you can buy a watch for 10 to 30 pounds and get a superb watch.
I have a bond seamaster, a rolex day date, yet my cheap casio ae1200 gets a ton of wrist time. Nothing wrong with a cheap piece, if you can enjoy and embrace it.
@jorgeg162 why have you had bad experience with the make. I can say without a doubt really well made watches for the money they exceeded all my expectations. Specifically, swimming,in a swimming pool, on the sea and used in a sauna. So can't go wrong. They are cheap but they are really well made watches.

When I see "Swizz made" I see mainly made in Asia (likely China) and assembled in Switzerland. That does not mean that the watches are any worse, than if they were 100% Made in Switzerland. However, people tend to do this thing that is not really thinking about it sort of stereotyping of things in Asia being cheaply made. Before China became the cheap goods provider for Europe it was Italy, today Italy is more known for luxuray goods than cheap products. It's all pretty bs to base how good a product is, simply on where it's made, over inspecting the actual product. Thing is, our brains like easy answers that require no thinking, that's why marketing such as "Swiss Made" is so effective.
It will surprise you that some parts are not coming also from China, they are coming also from Russia. Also, for some of the movements the design is done outside Switzerland and they just buy the license of the movement and do some modifications to an existing one and then boom you have a Swiss movement. And also they compensate the product cost from China because is too cheap, and Switzerland is very expensive....

If one wants accuracy, stick to quartz watches. One of my most accurate mechanical watch is the somewhat contentious Powermatic 80 movement watches. Very close second is Tudor MT5602. I don't know if you can call it a mechanical watch but, my Grand Seiko Spring Drive is probably the most accurate watch.
Of course these very expensive watches are over priced, at least in terms of cost to manufacture relative to sale price. Besides a nice profit margin for the company, most of the costs go to marketing, fancy shops and expensive management overhead. The actual cost to make the watch is only a fraction of the final price...And it gets a lot worse the higher in price one goes. People are buying a logo more than a watch.
I agree! Why would women be limited to small watches with diamonds? Some women prefer jewelry type watches. Others, like me and from her videos Jenni as well, are more interested in the movement / complications, design, etc.I’m 4’-10’’ (1.47m…) and the main piece of my very modest collection is a 42 mm Longines Master collection quadruple retrograde. The sales associate was a bit surprised at first by the watches I wanted to look at, but I find it suits me perfectly. So don’t be afraid!
Nobody has mentioned Richard Mille watch, founded in 2001, and can sells for the price of a most expensive car in the world. Very few people own such watches and those that do flaunt it as a status symbol, usually racing car drivers and actors who are in the public eye....
Great article. Help me understand the water resistant ratings... a watch rated for 30mtrs shouldn't be worn whilst swimming??? This is about 100ft deep so why will the watch get harmed when you are at the beach and just splashing around on or near the surface?
It depends on the brand. Not all are the same when it comes to resistance. If the watch you are referring to is a Casio, it will CERTAINLY withstand even more than what is stated in the description. For example, the classic F91-W says it is 3 atm/30 meters. However, I have seen people diving in open water up to 60 meters deep using this watch. It is the preferred diving watch for many people. Now, if your watch is a Patek or similar brand, I do NOT recommend swimming with it.
If a french or italian car company use swiss engines, the cars are not labelled as "Made in Swiss", why does this happen with watches (Panerai etc etc..)?
Overpriced: MSRP might not be overpriced, but paying 4x for a used Rolex (who make more mechanical watches than any other brand) is certainly overpriced and has nothing to do with timekeeping.

I have never understood why Rolex deserves to play in the league of luxury watches. They are not badly made, they are simply quite utilitarian and unexceptional in almost every regard. While most every hand-crafted Swiss luxury watch exudes the refinement and artisanship of precious jewelry, Rolex sports the elegance and craftsmanship of a good-quality spark plug.
Modern Casio watches are rated for 30 seconds a month. 40 years ago they were 15 seconds. Each watch is pretty consistent though so it is a pretty lottery what you get. I have two versions of the same watch, one is +12 s/month and the other +26 s.
I have a rose gold jlc grande reverso with the 976 movement on the other side. I always put it movement face up and ppl be like why would do that, you cant even read time. Then I'll just go "why I have my phone for that". cant lie Im kinda proud of my multi level perfect come back. Its just the perfect thing to say to those people 😂
Almost all Seiko watches gain value over time. And you forgot to mention only 50% of the movement has to be made in Switzerland to be called a swiss watch. The other 50% is made in China. Swiss watches are just as much chinese as they are Swiss

Their is lots of factors even if it says Made in USA with Swiss Parts, all I could say yet American brands could contract a company in Switzerland to make their watches or that the parts a sent to the Philppines or South Korea, Thailand or even China to put it all together and say Swiss Movement that even with watches that are Made in Germany might be guilty of using Swiss components, or vice versa to say the Swiss Made part might not be 100% Made in Switzerland or it could use parts from Germany. Just to say their are lots of luxury brands that are not even from Switzerland and won't break the bank that even my Chinese made Winner watch from Temu is more accurate than any watch from Switzerland or to say you get more bang for your buck with a San Marino that is from China and that more accurate than an expensive Rolex. Yet Timex is also a good option of you don't want to break the bank.
For Rolex, watches are a profitable by-product of their significant core business in diamonds and precious metals. If they make watches or don't make watches, the difference is a small one on the Rolex bottom line.
To me, the „Swiss Made“ label is mostly marketing drivel. In the ~under $2k price category, watches labeled „Swiss Made“ often (probably mostly) use Made in China components, then a cheap Sellita movement is added and voila, it can legally be called „Swiss Made.“
Just go watch channels where people rebuild these watches. You'd learn all of this very quickly. I learned it all in a day or 2 just watching them rebuild Rolexes and other, more expensive watches.
I guess the problem is that this rating is misleading by watch makers, technically it means a watch is capable of going 50m under water and/or can resist upto 5 atm of pressure (73.5 psi). IMO if a watch cannot handle simple swimming it should not have any water rating.

I guess I’ve been lucky or blessed. My older 0:57 Rolex Oyster Perp Date (1570) has been 0-2 sec day for a very long time. Because I source service carefully. Even my undesirable Omega cal 1012 is 0-2”. And I did have tragic results by allowing Rolex to service it, once! To be sure: Never again!
Japanese watches are the best, absolutely love wearing my Casio Edifice EFB. Cheap reliable and accurate Seiko VX43E movement and it hits every marker with good alignment. For daily wear I’m a fan of Casio’s Edifice line, and one day I’ll rotate a couple Casio Oceanus’s and Cartier’s into the collection for a that high end Swiss luxury feel.

Luxury watches exist mainly to show off. This is why Grand seiko struggles even it's more accurate than any Swiss watch.

My Bulova Precisionist Divers Watch is Accurate to 5 seconds per year. It has 3 Electronic tuning Forks. I never Adjust it and it's ten years old !

A common misconception is that if a watch is large bulky cumbersome or Uncomfortable it is less prone to liquid and environmental damage.
It just more about the quality of the watch and the manufacturer.

The pricing model. Until I got deep into it I always believed it was a massive cash cow and profit must be at least 50% of the price. Turns out with enough research you find most are running at 15% to 20% profit over the range with the exception of Rolex where it’s guessed to be 30% to 35% of the final price. So if a brand has an average price if £10K they would make no profit with an average of £8K a watch which was a shocker for me. The cost of the parts in materials however is incredibly small.
Overpriced is a wrong word describing the luxury watches! It’s hyper-priced. 🧠🤨

Most of these bits of information are well know outside of novices in the watch world.
I have ONE Swiss and one German watch. I suggest that a very good criterion for being suspicious: is the watch you are considering a Large Corporation watch? Large Corps invariably use a CEO on Bonus Targets that include Lowering Cost and Establishing Brand Cult Status. Result? Insane price escalation. Lots of very good micro brands out there. Low overhead, ...not using high power marketing to force obsession. The owner walks the manufacturing line. That's WHY the traditional mechanical watches are so loved - that's how the good ones get made. ;)

Singe my Lange & Söhne watch (1815, build in 1996), is back from service, the accuracy is 0 … + 1 s/ 24 h (0 within a week). No chronometer certificate, just fine craftsmanship in design, production & assembly.

I do not think that water resistance rating is necessarily an indication of the watch's vibration or impact resistance.
Can you believe I have a really cheap SKMEI a Chinese make. I absolutely love it. Taken it swimming, diving, in the sea and the swimming pool. Plus used in a sauna. It's been perfect. Why pay 1000's when you can buy a watch for 10 to 30 pounds and get a superb watch.
I have a bond seamaster, a rolex day date, yet my cheap casio ae1200 gets a ton of wrist time. Nothing wrong with a cheap piece, if you can enjoy and embrace it.

@jorgeg162 why have you had bad experience with the make. I can say without a doubt really well made watches for the money they exceeded all my expectations. Specifically, swimming,in a swimming pool, on the sea and used in a sauna. So can't go wrong. They are cheap but they are really well made watches.

When I see "Swizz made" I see mainly made in Asia (likely China) and assembled in Switzerland.
That does not mean that the watches are any worse, than if they were 100% Made in Switzerland.
However, people tend to do this thing that is not really thinking about it sort of stereotyping of things in Asia being cheaply made.
Before China became the cheap goods provider for Europe it was Italy, today Italy is more known for luxuray goods than cheap products. It's all pretty bs to base how good a product is, simply on where it's made, over inspecting the actual product.
Thing is, our brains like easy answers that require no thinking, that's why marketing such as "Swiss Made" is so effective.
you caught onto something, most swiss made are made with parts from China, wonder why the Chinese can make a rolex copy so well;-)
It will surprise you that some parts are not coming also from China, they are coming also from Russia. Also, for some of the movements the design is done outside Switzerland and they just buy the license of the movement and do some modifications to an existing one and then boom you have a Swiss movement. And also they compensate the product cost from China because is too cheap, and Switzerland is very expensive....

If one wants accuracy, stick to quartz watches. One of my most accurate mechanical watch is the somewhat contentious Powermatic 80 movement watches. Very close second is Tudor MT5602. I don't know if you can call it a mechanical watch but, my Grand Seiko Spring Drive is probably the most accurate watch.
Powermatics are low beat. Terrible for accuracy.

Of course these very expensive watches are over priced, at least in terms of cost to manufacture relative to sale price. Besides a nice profit margin for the company, most of the costs go to marketing, fancy shops and expensive management overhead. The actual cost to make the watch is only a fraction of the final price...And it gets a lot worse the higher in price one goes. People are buying a logo more than a watch.
I would add shock resistance. Many watches cannot take strong/jerky movement and you need to be careful playing sports.
Never take a ”hot” showers even if the timepiece is watertight because it will be condense inside🙁
Any watch can be a ladies watch as long as you have a wrist for it. A woman wearing a Daytona is one of the most sexy look there is.

I agree! Why would women be limited to small watches with diamonds? Some women prefer jewelry type watches. Others, like me and from her videos Jenni as well, are more interested in the movement / complications, design, etc.I’m 4’-10’’ (1.47m…) and the main piece of my very modest collection is a 42 mm Longines Master collection quadruple retrograde. The sales associate was a bit surprised at first by the watches I wanted to look at, but I find it suits me perfectly. So don’t be afraid!
To me the Daytona is more of a woman’s watch than men. I think the Zenith suits more to men 😅

Nobody has mentioned Richard Mille watch, founded in 2001, and can sells for the price of a most expensive car in the world. Very few people own such watches and those that do flaunt it as a status symbol, usually racing car drivers and actors who are in the public eye....

Great article. Help me understand the water resistant ratings... a watch rated for 30mtrs shouldn't be worn whilst swimming??? This is about 100ft deep so why will the watch get harmed when you are at the beach and just splashing around on or near the surface?
It depends on the brand. Not all are the same when it comes to resistance. If the watch you are referring to is a Casio, it will CERTAINLY withstand even more than what is stated in the description. For example, the classic F91-W says it is 3 atm/30 meters. However, I have seen people diving in open water up to 60 meters deep using this watch. It is the preferred diving watch for many people.
Now, if your watch is a Patek or similar brand, I do NOT recommend swimming with it.
If a french or italian car company use swiss engines, the cars are not labelled as "Made in Swiss", why does this happen with watches (Panerai etc etc..)?
Overpriced: MSRP might not be overpriced, but paying 4x for a used Rolex (who make more mechanical watches than any other brand) is certainly overpriced and has nothing to do with timekeeping.

I have never understood why Rolex deserves to play in the league of luxury watches.
They are not badly made, they are simply quite utilitarian and unexceptional in almost every regard.

Modern Casio watches are rated for 30 seconds a month. 40 years ago they were 15 seconds. Each watch is pretty consistent though so it is a pretty lottery what you get. I have two versions of the same watch, one is +12 s/month and the other +26 s.
I have a rose gold jlc grande reverso with the 976 movement on the other side. I always put it movement face up and ppl be like why would do that, you cant even read time. Then I'll just go "why I have my phone for that". cant lie Im kinda proud of my multi level perfect come back. Its just the perfect thing to say to those people 😂

Almost all Seiko watches gain value over time. And you forgot to mention only 50% of the movement has to be made in Switzerland to be called a swiss watch. The other 50% is made in China. Swiss watches are just as much chinese as they are Swiss
No one works for free. So price adds up very quickly.

Their is lots of factors even if it says Made in USA with Swiss Parts, all I could say yet American brands could contract a company in Switzerland to make their watches or that the parts a sent to the Philppines or South Korea, Thailand or even China to put it all together and say Swiss Movement that even with watches that are Made in Germany might be guilty of using Swiss components, or vice versa to say the Swiss Made part might not be 100% Made in Switzerland or it could use parts from Germany.
Just to say their are lots of luxury brands that are not even from Switzerland and won't break the bank that even my Chinese made Winner watch from Temu is more accurate than any watch from Switzerland or to say you get more bang for your buck with a San Marino that is from China and that more accurate than an expensive Rolex.
Yet Timex is also a good option of you don't want to break the bank.
Those Luxury watches are perfectly fine except way over-priced.
For Rolex, watches are a profitable by-product of their significant core business in diamonds and precious metals. If they make watches or don't make watches, the difference is a small one on the Rolex bottom line.

To me, the „Swiss Made“ label is mostly marketing drivel. In the ~under $2k price category, watches labeled „Swiss Made“ often (probably mostly) use Made in China components, then a cheap Sellita movement is added and voila, it can legally be called „Swiss Made.“

Sad how most of the watch community doesnt know 50m is not enough to go swimming with and will continue to scream at anyone that goes against them
I guess the problem is that this rating is misleading by watch makers, technically it means a watch is capable of going 50m under water and/or can resist upto 5 atm of pressure (73.5 psi). IMO if a watch cannot handle simple swimming it should not have any water rating.

I guess I’ve been lucky or blessed. My older 0:57 Rolex Oyster Perp Date (1570) has been 0-2 sec day for a very long time. Because I source service carefully. Even my undesirable Omega cal 1012 is 0-2”.
And I did have tragic results by allowing Rolex to service it, once! To be sure: Never again!
Swizz made: the Japanese now make the best watches at reasonable prices. Grand Seiko and their more exclusive brands.
Japanese watches are the best, absolutely love wearing my Casio Edifice EFB. Cheap reliable and accurate Seiko VX43E movement and it hits every marker with good alignment. For daily wear I’m a fan of Casio’s Edifice line, and one day I’ll rotate a couple Casio Oceanus’s and Cartier’s into the collection for a that high end Swiss luxury feel.
