    As someone who once owned two Rolex Submariners, I'll never have one of the damned things again even if you gave them to me. I sold them for a ridiculously high price to an antique dealer, mainly because I live in New Zealand, and they had to go to AUSTRALIA to be serviced every three years or so - at a cost of nearly $800 EACH per service!! And they were away for up to TWO MONTHS!! This was over 20 years ago - the prices are much worse now! And even after being serviced, were stupidly inaccurate - THAT was the worst thing! So I sold them, and being antiques (one was the original 100 metre model left to me by my grandfather, the other a 200 metre Oyster Perpetual I bought myself in Canada in about 1967) I got a ridiculous amount of money for them. I then went and bought two Seikos - a V657 Chronometer movement, and a 200 metre dive watch SGEB47 (and I spend a lot of time in or on the water!) Total cost NZ$800!! I've been wearing one of them every day for the past 20+ years, batteries last 3+ years in either of them - battery replacement about $40, and they are only adjusted for time TWICE A YEAR against the UTC on the Internet - when we go onto and off of Daylight Saving Time. Accuracy?? BETTER THAN +/- 3 SECONDS IN 6 MONTHS!! Oh, and I have 250mm wrists - but Seiko put in the extra links for free!! Watches to me are for telling the right time - as supposed status symbols they aren't worth a damn!!

      Exactly fuck a Rolex I’m wear a Gshock/Casio watch. it tell the time the exact same time the same way. The world is funny. It’s only for social status. Rolex charges a branding surcharge, so its really not difficult to find alternative watches that offer better accuracy, build quality, and aesthetic, for less money. What's tough is limiting it to just 3 watches.

    i used to be all about "i want a Rolex" and then i was finally in a position to purchase one. Well i had the money but apparently i still couldn't purchase one. I went online to see prices on used and grey market and thought "yeah no". Then I realized something. The only reason I have ever wanted a Rolex was because I couldn't get one. Then I started looking at Omega and couldn't be happier. All I had to do was walk into the Boutique and walk out with a Seamaster and a Speedmaster. No waiting no premium price on the second market. Took maybe 2 hours total to try on and decide what I wanted. No wait lists no bullshit. If you want a Rolex that's great and you should get one but I'm over the whole "wanting what you cant buy". If they made more and made them available I may change my mind.

    I've noticed, as a new watch enthusiast, that most brands especially the premium ones, don't deviate from their style. The Omega Seamaster has the straight elongated sides @5:48 that is iconic to the Speedmaster for instance. Its nice to see a wide ranging market where the brands aren't trying to BE each other. Its defined style and brands are rooted to their heritage

    • @treatb09
      @treatb09 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sort of. Look up omega. Rolex. N patek in the 1900-1960 range. The watches today are more heavily designed around mass production. Which is why the hands are blocky, and less exact. The bars are blocky. Its also designed to a means of what was more successful in the 70’s till now. For men that dont have any real taste but want something to demonstrate a sense of luxury n style to compensate. So they end up looking all the same.
      Omega’s speedmaster can range from 5,000-100,000$ same movements and parts just one will have emeralds or diamonds vs a simple watch used to go to the moon. At that point the real enthusiast comes out. Do you just want gem stones or horological history. A plain speedmaster is 10x cooler than one embedded with diamonds.

    I dont understand why everything is an "alternative" to Rolex. Just buy what you like and stop thinking that Rolex is the 'end all / 'be all' because of marketing. (Yes I do own a sub) My point is, the watch industry should stop comparing every thing to Rolex and simply state the attributes of each watch.

    • @vvvhhhhhbb
      @vvvhhhhhbb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Arkadi Danielyan I consider the watch industry to include the people that make, do research, and purchase, if you want to get so technical about 2 words in a statement, I will rephrase it "so many people". I don't consider the likes of Breitling, Blancpain and other watches of this caliber to be wannabes. However, every review for video Compares them to Rolex. Hopefully that's to your satisfaction!

    • @Chrissepisje
      @Chrissepisje 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Arkadi Danielyan She opens up with a Zenith El Primero. From a technical standpoint, it was Zenith, Hamilton/Buren/Heuer/Valjoux and finally Seiko in the race for the first self-winding chronograph movement. Nowhere in that whole technological development was any Rolex to be seen.
      As far as I'm concerned, the Zenith only bears comparing to the Heuer Autavia's and Monaco's and the Seiko 6139 and subsequent movements. Rolex ought not to be mentioned in the same sentence as those, because it is simply out of place.
      So I'm solidly with @Northwest at nite.

      Exactly. As I'd recommend, if you want an expensive watch, get a $100 Chinese copy. They got copies of pretty much every mainstream watch. Wear it until you have the money for the real deal and give cheap one away to some random homeless guy. While wearing copy you might even reconsider. I did that with Casio Mudmaster and saved like $600 by not buying the original. And I was skeptical about Panerai I really wanted. So I got original one and some hobo in my neighborhood is now flexing a copy (or sold it for drugs more likely). The watches from above should be acquired only because you want them, not as a substitute.

    My uncle gave me a used Orfina Porsche Design (Top Gun Watch) in 1987, I wore it for 12 years before it was irreparably damaged. I bought 2 more myself and wore those another 10-12 yrs.
    In 2015 I purchased a custom high end case and bracelet, a premium ETA/Valjoux 7750 (milspec), a custom handmade dial, hands and crown. And I assembled myself a fully custom, premium, hand-made, one-off, titanium chronograph, automatic with milspec design. Very heavy duty, it has been beat up, serviced it twice so far. Total cost of parts: 1200$
    (I have since made 2 more, 1x daytona and 1x Submariner with the same dials and mov. I also made a skeletonized version using another ETA movement but in the same case and style.)
    Having the chance to itemize, customize and build my own watch was unique, I want to it again and again and again.
    ^All parts (including the ETA7750) were either hand crafted in Switzerland or Germany (case) or France (hands, crown and dial). It is surprisingly cheap and easy to deal with these people, they are enthusiasts to the hilt. I chose a common 2D white/grey/black beveled silk printed dial face and inlayed titanium hr markers, they lathed and engraved the crown for free!. The hardest part was trusting the Water Resistance; I still take them off for swimming, even if I've double and triple checked the seals. These models are single sealed crown post and single sealed back. I try not even to shower with them, but in reality they are water resist 30M.

    I have this pelagos, LHD. Love it dearly but my only real complaint is the hands and markers not having any exposed metal, brushed or polished. To me that's the only thing keeping it from being a true seadweller competitor, looks wise. Makes the dial almost fall a little flat. That said i wouldn't trade it for anything, except maybe a Planet ocean 39mm. But even on the secondary they come in quite a bit more than the pelagos. Rolex is an okay investment (doesn't match investing in stocks), but you do get the advantage of being able to wear it and then sell it for a profit. But, there's much more variety out there with other brands. For example, I'd never get a Daytona due to the screw down pushers. Unlike many, I actually use my chronographs a lot (I have three, IWC Portugieser, Omega Speedmaster, Zenith El Primero). And I use chronographs for things like pulling espresso shots. Unscrewing the pushers before every use and screwing them back down afterwards would render the complication worthless, as I often forget I need to time something but I can just reach down and press the button quickly. Anyway, the point is that Rolex is fine, and even an okay investment. But there's many better and more beautiful watches out there. If you were only getting one watch, sure, probably best to get a Rolex.

But that was back in the days when a watch had a purpose - and not just for time. I used the compasses, and the barographs, for work, and play, and then smart phones arrived.
    And now all my watches sit in a large box, doing not a lot if they're automatic, and going flat if they're battery powered. Because the future of watches is where it began: in the pocket.

    Good choice: The El Primero mouvement is a nice story in itself, saved by a passion for excellence. Let's give so some credit to Rolex who wisely chooses it, reactivated the production to earn with it the solid reputation of the Daytona chronograph and Rolex did not jeopardizing a "small family" brand by a blind consolidation and take over. Later with such a production boost , Zenith got back offering the admired genuine El Primero watch on their own, a watch considered by many fans as " the Porsche of the watch industry" . The so called video "unknown reason " Rolex slowed it down to 4 hertz was to use a more world wide acceptable standard liquid lubricant instead of the early El Primero dry lube since Zenith at 5 hertz is using their special dry lubricant: owner can have their new watch s/n registered with Zenith get extra year warranty that way and since only factory authorized service outlets can properly maintain it, the declared stolen watches are maybe a bit harder to keep running, a good thing. 5 hertz requires also more energy which limits the El Primero power reserve to 50 hours maximum and maybe another reason Rolex slow it down on the Daytona. I managed to get an El Primero Stratos fly back striking tenth Felix Baumgartner special and I love it. With a ceramic ring around and the same overall 42 mm diameter, the watch "looks" smaller and I prefer this less imposing and more "supersonic" diver's look (FB dived from 120000 feet high with one) Before, the large size refrained me of getting a previous model.( a good paire of glasses seemed much cheaper) I never considered getting an heavy steel Daytona, Oyster or Tudor, so maybe there has been more synergy than competition in the parallel success story of both brands: young, my quite exclusive preference went to the moon proof and Apollo 13 rescue module firing time metering Speedmaster but the genuine robust Omega Speedmaster was not even automatic unlike a plain waterproof Rolex at the time and also too much money for me then...Today a G Daniels co-axial seamaster is a technically interesting "motor" with rubies contacts and less wear, nice looking too and would be my second choice, but I prefer a more classic and maybe more robust El Primero. Note that each French Rafale pilot gets and uses an El Primero fly back, with this watch option and the fly back one touch feature, they can navigate accurately. Time to enroll...Good choice..!!

      The El Primero watch came first, not only the movement. The Daytona is a copy of the El Primero chronograph watch

      @@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess there is an excellent book on this product .. the printer even got an international price for the quality of execution of the book but it is not for sale but was given by the brand to watch owners….and it can be found second hand.. chronologically Zenith stopped totally the El Primero watch and mouvements production in the 80’s because quartz watch was supposed to be the only possible future of those timepieces, with no market foreseen then for traditional mechanical watches…it was a mistake..as those mechanical art pieces became kind of “piece of jellery .” The whole El Primero tooling and matrix were properly stored and preserved by a wise old watchmaker. With the rescue of such a fantastic work tooling, some production got restated for parts ten years later once first production batch reached the repair shops and everyone agreed then that this masterpiece full production had to be restarted, this got very timely helped and financed by the exclusive deal to supply Rolex with a quality chronograph movement they did not have yet and were searching for one…and with it, and slowed down, the Daytona earned a well deserved reputation for reliability with good accuracy. Then Rolex, got their own chrono finally working well, a copy as you said with inferior but yet sufficient reliability after much delays and headaches ( there are many different alloys materials used in such a mvt.) Rolex stopped outsourcing those very special chronograph movements near 2003 I believe…boosting back the Zenith El Primero complete watch production and sales. Hope the saga will go on..

    I have a G-Shock that i have had since 1996. Still works.... Price 100 € when it came out. All of these watches are beautiful and i love the mechanism.... But i stil don't think it's cheap to pay between 4000 and 5500 € for a watch. I understand that the brand and quality and the effort put into it. But my Casio after 26 years still works and has been working through hell.

    Hello Jenni,
    The reason behind Rolex reducing the VPH was to ensure longevity of the movement and prolong the service intervals. Rolex often gets undeserved credit when ultimately all they genuinely pioneer is crafting reliable watches that have this undeniable allure.

      Seiko 3Hz movements do pretty well with irregular servicing for this reason. Personally I've always felt it's worth the less smooth seconds hand.

    I keep hearing about wait times - last fall I all my AD for a 114060 and he not only had one in stock but held it for me for a week until I could get in to his store to pick it up and pay. I had not prior relationship with him and was treated great. When things get back to normal I want a 36mm OP watch and will go back to him for that watch.

    I'll never forget the 1st time I saw Zenith watch. As far as I knew back then, they made TV's ...I figured their watch would be a joke UNTIL I saw that it was $190000US. 😱
    But as a kid I fell in love the Seamaster. That would be my pick of these 3.

    These are good alternatives. The El Primero is my favorite Zenith, probably the only one I’d seriously consider. The Seamaster 300 is an outstanding watch. I’d want a Speedmaster first but this would be next (I already have a 2001 Diver 300M which is the best Omega IMO). I would never consider a Tudor. That’s just an impostor Rolex Submariner, there’s no way I’d ever settle for that. It is the one watch brand I hate.

    Alternatively, if you're the kind of person that would have bought the original Rolex Submariner, don't look at mechanical watches at all and get an actual dive computer instead. No real diver will take you seriously if you show up for a dive in a Rolex instead of something that can actually monitor your air mix. They are much more durable, accurate, and water resistant than any mechanical watch and some of them are perfectly wearable as a watch in most occasions, especially if you change the strap.

    I just don't understand why any chap would want to wear a vast, heavy thing on his wrist. 99% of the time none of the features, eg depth, chrono, bulletproofness and so on are going to be used. It will sit in the drawer. Get a super slim, light, practical watch and use it and love it. Interesting video.
