NIKON 50 1.8D Review-Nikon's Nifty Fifty Lens, Must Buy!

  • Canon has a nifty 50 1.8 lens. Did you know Nikon has something very similar, if not better? Here is the hands on review of Nikon's nifty fifty, the 50 1.8D. This affordable lens is suitable for any beginner. But be warned, unless you have a camera that has a focus motor, this lens will NOT auto focus.
    In this video, I go hands on and review the Nikon 50 1.8D lens. Canon has had a hugely popular lens in its Canon 50 1,8 nifty fifty lens but Nikon users should know they have a nifty fifty as well. It's lightweight, affordable and has amazing image quality. But is it too cheaply made?
    As always "Keep an Eye Out!"

    This is far better than canon's lens. The manual focus is insane if you're doing product photography.

    Hi! awesome review!
    I have a question. I'm just starting with photography so it's a silly question. I will be mounting it on a D700, and you mention that it needs to be set to f22, and a switch needs to be locked as well before mounting it. Does this mean that you cannot use the lens' aperture ring and you can only set the aperture on the camera??
    I would be very glad if you could expand on this a bit!

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      not a silly question at all, many dont understand how the older lens work! So yup, you just set the lens to f/22 then forget about it. You control the aperture the normal way through the body. You can not use the lens ring or the camera wont let you shoot. But you have the full range of the lens, 1.8/22!

    hi Eric. i was using this lens on my d5200, i was unable to vary the aperture of the lens since the camera was asking me to keep at f22 and then lock it. can you explain how to vary aperture using camera settings. how can we get bokeh effect on this lens.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      correct, you need to leave the aperture ring locked at f22. You can not use that ring to change aperture, you need to use the actual camera to change the f stop!

      i wouldnt worry or rely on adapater, especially just starting out. Just use the kit lens you have with the a5000 learn and practice, then worry about more gear later if you need it.

    im planning to use it on sony nex 5r using an adapter(no electricity passes through that).But the camera has a option to shoot without lens, so will the aperture ring work?

    • @Eric_Rossi

      Depending on the adapter I believe but there would be no electrics anyway. So yes the ring should be the only way it works

  • @aussie8114
    @aussie8114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have the pre d version which I believe is exactly the same optics. When I compare it to my 50mm 1.8g this old lens is actually a bit sharper and has noticeably better micro contrast giving superior 3 dimensional look to photos. And I've fine tuned the autofocus on my g lenses so it's definitely sharper. It's also noticeably sharper than my 24-70 1.8g Zoom at 50mm. The only downside I can see is it's a bit darker lens so 1/3 stop more exp is needed and colour temp is a bit warmer but that easily fixed in post.

    Brilliant review. I have a 50mm 1.8G and I am going to buy this 1.8D, because it has an aperture ring and can be used on a reverse ring for macro photography on any NIKON DSLR. Another good feature of this lens is that it closes down to f/22, while the 1.8G goes to f/16 only.

    Totally agree with you Eric the Nikon 50mm 1.8D is an awesome lens for the money.
    Had this lens for few months and loved it, its a super sharp lens impressive sharpness even at F1.8 (even though it gets VERY sharp at F2.8 and up.
    Indeed Bokeh isn't as good as the Nikon 85mm 1.4D but its good enough for non pro portrait shooters on a crop sensor body.
    For full frame and crop sensor this is a great street lens but I think for street photography its at its best on full frame.
    Just tremendous bang for the buck.
    Sadly I sold it and got the Nikon 50mm 1.8G because I got a second body to my D750 a D60 and as you said it will not AF on the D60, if I didn't want to use 50mm on my D60 then I would probably still keep the "D" lens.
    Nice review.

    I've got a couple questions. I'm brand new to this world of DSLRs. I've been using the Nikon L820 for years and just recently moved to the D5000. This lens caught my eye because it was listed as a Macro lens and a Prime lens. I need a lens that fits both categories, as my 18-55mm lowers my video quality to awful levels, and I'm a Toy Photographer and I need a lens that can focus on figures like Lego minifigures. Will this lens work as a macro lens? And will it give better film quality than an 18-55mm lens?

    • @Eric_Rossi

      you need to set the aperture ring to the highest f stop and just leave it there. It should autofocus though as the d7100 has a focus motor. But that is why you cant use it right now, leave the aperture ring at f22 or whatever it goes to and just control the aperture through the camera

    Eric, I have a D3200 and understand it will not autofocus which is fine, I'll do it manually. My question is, how will this lens communicate with the D3200 body? Do i have to set the body to manual mode in order for me to use the aperture ring on the lens? What do you mean about having to lock the ring at 22?

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      nope you can use the camera as normal, the electronics transfer mostly besides the af. So for the aperture to work, you have to set the ring on the camera and leave it at the max f stop. thats all.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The aperture you can control through the camera like normal. You need to keep this lens set to the highest on the ring or it will not work. So once you set this lens once, dont touch the ring again.

      Demario DaSinger glad you found the channel from the 50 video! I use my Nikon 24-70 2.8 lens on every video and for most of my photo/video work. It does come at a pretty penny but is SO worth the investment. You would do ok with the 50mm but will be pretty tight to shoot music vids. I like zoom lenses more for the versatility. What budget do you have in mind?

      I was thinking to up grade to the D7000 and Getting the 18-140mm

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the 7000 is a great camera, I used to have it plus its super affordable now. The 18-140 is ok but once you start zooming in you begin to lose a lot of light. So you're look at around 500 for a lens if you get the 7000. For almost 1000/1200 bucks you could get a used Nikon 24-70 which would work with your D5300. While I like the upgrade to the 7000, they both use similar sensors. You just get a better built body with the 7000. You might as well invest in great glass.

    I...*half* agree. It's a great lens, but if you have a camera like the D90 that doesn't allow you to micro adjust your focus, then it can be a problem. If you happen to get a camera/lens combo that is "out of adjustment" like I did, then many shots can be a little blurry and nothing can be done. There is another local photographer near me that had the same problem with the D90/50mm 1.8D combo...since then, we've both upgraded. Your thoughts?

    • @trashenstein8732

      Try manual focus in Liveview. It's a slow process but might solve back or front focus on the D90

    It's the Nikkor 50mm 1.8G that has an internal motor that works for the DX format since these lower entry level models don't have the additional motor that drives the focusing.

      Unfortunately this will not autofocus on the 5500. The d5500 does not have the motor. Same as the lens here. Now if the body has the motor it doesn't matter if the lens does or not. That's why people upgrade to the d7000 line of camera because the body has the motor.

    I had 2 of those lenses and also 1 of the G version AF-S ... I sold them all ... All was super sharp no complain,the problem was that my 24-70 got same quality or better but no worst and also gives you the range which is important especially for travel...Now being a 1.8 aperture lens doesn matter because you will shoo 2.8 and above...Actually with the 24-70 if you go 70mm and f3.5 the blur is much better and also 50mm and 70mm is not that different...I love them but they can do less...If you want to do portrait work with this you have to jump into models face which is not good.

    I've had the 50 1.8D for years now. Still one of my favorite lenses. It's crazy that at f/8 it's probably one of the sharpest Nikon lenses out there. Every Nikon owner should own one.
    And yeah... I think I do remember it being tight way back when I first got it. Mine isn't tight now, but maybe it's from using it so much on several cameras over the years.
    I wish you could get more amazing lenses like this so cheap... an 85mm 1.8 with the same quality at such a low price would be amazing.

      True... but a lens like the 50 1.8D is good enough and cheap enough that I'd go with the name brand Nikon over them. Especially since I've been using the 50 1.8 constantly for years now. I think Tony Northrup's channel here on YT did a review on that Yongnuo 50mm too recently if I remember right and they found some things lacking when they compared it to the Nikon (or Canon--can't remember) equivalent.

      Yeah as mentioned you’d need a lens that has an internal auto focus motor to get auto focus to work. The d3100 doesn’t have that motor so you would need a lens that can handle that. So instead of D version of this lens you would need the G version. So I know it’s a bit more money but it’ll work just as needed in the G version.
