This is a review of the brand new NIKON 50mm 1.8G lens. I compare it with the Nikon 50mm F1.8d Nikon 50mm 1.4g and 50mm 1.4d. You can download the full res images by clicking the link above.

@KarukeH hey there, what it really comes down to is build quality. The feel of the 1.4 compared to the 1.8 is a huge difference. I like the 1.4d that I have and you may be able to find that used for a great price. If you camera has the focus motors it would auto focus on it. When you hold a 1.4 you can feel the difference and in my opinion the image quality is better in the 1.4.
Sorry Jared, I normally love your videos, but I learned much more about the 2 lenses I was looking at from Kai. He does have a potty mouth, but does not waste my time watching him sniff.

@MrWarrenLO great question. For me personally I have to rely on autofocus because my eyes are blurry to begin with and i can not manually do so. Autofocus is one of the only things I let there camera take control of. Or if I am shooting macro i may tweak that myself when i eye it up in manual.

Jared I have a d5000 with no motor. I want to get a prime lens and I've seen an old 50mm 1.8 ai series e, manual aperture, manual focus. I'm a student with a tight budget the lens was just short of $50. Should I get the lens or shop around for a better deal on a newer lens?

Jared, I picked up a D3100 about two weeks ago based on your review. Would you recommend the 50mm 1.8g or a 35mm 1.8g as an upgrade from the 18-55g kit lens? Which one has the better quality?
@Pagna978 Of course. I'm assuming you have the kit lens, right? What focal length do you usually use? I'm always at 55 if I'm shooting a product or a person, and 18 if I'm shooting a scene. Occasionally I'll go to 35 or 24 and shoot looking up from the plane of the table to emphasize a product's size, but I primarily use the long or wide ends of the lens. I shoot messenger bags that I make and other people's artwork with the kit lens, it works great but sometimes you want shallow DOF.
I have a Nikon D3200 and I'm a novice at DSLR cameras, would you recommend that I get the Nikkor 50mm 1.8D even though I can only use it in manual mode since my camera has no built in motor? Would that be a good way to learn since I won't have the lens doing all of the focusing for me or should I spend a little extra to get the 1.8G, which has autofocus? I'm asking this because the 1.8D is currently selling for just under $100 on eBay so I figured that I should get it.
Jared, I'm about as amateur as one can be so I purchased the Nikon D3200 as I have a little one due to arrive any day now. I also purchased a 35mm 1:1.8G and was wondering, considering my skill level, if there was any reason why I would considering purchasing the 50 mm F1.8G ?

Jared what's a better buy the nikon 50 1.4d or 50 1.8g...I have a Nikon d7000 so the motor isn't really important to me...im interested in the character of the bokeh and im aware the 50 1.4d's bokeh can start to look hexagonal where as I would think the 1.8g wouldn't have that problem...so do you think i should still go with the 1.4d or the 1.8g in terms of bokeh

Hello friend, could tell me something? I'm using a Nikon D750 machine and put the Nikon 50mm 1.8D lens and noticed a poor image quality compared to " younger " 20- 120mm f4 , I wonder if we really have reason to imagine that the 50mm 1.8G has bemmm more quality , my thought proceeds ?

Hey Jared have you ever heard of the Nikkor f1.4 50mm AF-D S? Is it another name for the AF-G? I don't find the AF-G on the website of the shop I'm buying my lenses at, and was wondering if that's the same lens or not. What would you recommend between a f1.4 AF-G and the new f1.8 AF-G for a Nikon D3100 (knowing that I could afford the f1.4)? Will the f1.4 AF-G autofocus? Thanks for the review and your reply! Hi what is manual auto(MA) focus in the nikon 50mm F/1.8G AF-S and does infinity works in your lens. please Help me to know this. I brought it for Nikon D3300, and it's slightly hard to attach with camera.

The 50 1.8G hasn't been released in Canada yet, and I'm assuming since it's $220USD, it'll be around $230CDN. Now should I wait and get this one or get the 35 1.8G for $280CDN? I think the only main difference is that the 35 is a DX lens and the new 50 isn't, meaning it would be a 75mm focal length in my D5000 camera. Is a ~$50 difference worth the 40mm difference in focal length? Does it really matter?

I bought the 35mm 1.8G not long ago, and i love it. But I was also looking at the 50mm 1.8G, and I was wondering it it would be worth it to have the 50 also? Is there something that the 50 would be a much better application for than a 35?

I have both lenses. D lens is great, slight faster focus than the G lens, but focus sound is louder. I use the G lens mostly because it has better bokeh.

The Nikon D3200 camera does not have a built in autofocus motor, but the Nikon 50mm f1.8D lenses is AF lens which means Yes, it will autofocus.

@martinaee its mostly the motors you are paying for. Its not really an uber doober fast focusing lens and if you have the old one i would not replace it anytime soon.
Autofocus can be pretty useful sometimes, I am not meaning it's a MUST to have, but on lower grade DSLRs, not only it doesn't have a motor, but important to note is that the ViewFinder is a lot smaller, you might find it hard to notice that are you in focus or not sometimes. So I think having a motor might come in handy sometimes.
Jared, what do you think of the Nikon 85mm 1.8 lens? I have a 35mm 1.8 a 18-105 & a 70-300. I like the cost of the 50mm but would the 85mm be a better portrait lens.

this is some of the photos i shoot with the lens. mostly from 35- 50 , but some time i just need the 18mm.
lets say i were to shoot a group on stage. 50 mm will give me the reach for 1-2 person but then for the group shoot or a family i will have to back up. but i thinking about the the 50mm too. CAN THE 35MM BE USE FOR PORTRAITS ? CAN YOU PULL IT OFF?
Got the 1.8 af-s G - replacing the 35mm 1.8 af-s G when I upgraded from D90 to the D700. They both feel the same, and it was dirt cheap, and I just love it.

I have the 50mm 1.8D and used it quite a bit on my new D3100 with pretty good success. It is manual focus on the D3100. I found it difficult to focus in low light sometimes, but I could usually get the shot and the results were often some of the best shots I ever took. I got the 50mm 1.8G yesterday and the third shot I took with it was a total out of the part home run awesome shot. I love it. Well worth the money. I'm still going to keep the D on the shelf as a backup. Too cheap to sell.
anyone else notice its hard to turn the lens on the last little bit when you attach it? i dont know if its just mine. the 50mm G
Well, the D ones have one VERY big advantage. They have the aperture ring. That is so much better. I miss it on my 35mm 1.8g so i am thinking of getting the 50mm 1.8d for stacked lens reverse macro. What do you think @JaredPolin ?
I have the 35 1.8G and pretty happy so far with it. I have the 50 on order, wondering if it is a waste of money just to get a little closer and I should cancel before they ship it. I guess I could always sell it later.

@estudio100rafa not at all man, i do not get paid by any of those companies and even if i did I would still call a spade a spade. When canon comes out with new glass I play with that as well.
please tell, this is a fx format lens but I'm using. a Nikon d3400 will it affect the pics in terms of crop factor as using a fx lens of 50 mm on dx body equates to 75mm..
yes, on a crocheted camera instead of 50mm you get 75. The lens will not get any worse from this.

Just starting playing with the same exact combination today. Focusing is only possible through Live view. Take advantage of the zoom on live view to get it just right. Takes great shots. Slow to use this way. Get the 1.8G and snap a whole lot faster.
I need help with choosing lens, as I dont have a full time job, budget is a must for me, but I allso want the best glass I can get a hand on. I allready own the Nikon 35mm 1.8 and I love it, but if I had to choose between the 50mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.8 is it worth the extra money for 50mm 1.4? Or is the 1.8 good?
Go for Nikon 50mm f/1.8 because it's basically the same. The Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is just slightly a better upgrade. But honestly, I wouldn't pay double the money for a f1.4
If you have the 35mm 1.8 and you are on a Crop sensor camera, stick with the 35mm 1.8... The difference between a 35mm and a 50mm is a few feet as far as focal length... The 35mm on a crop sensor is the "normal" lens, aka its 50ish MM equivalent on a full frame / 35mm.
So that being said, getting a 50mm to me is a waste of money if you have the 35mm... you can simply just take a step forward and get the same framing. If you are thinking about portraiture, then save up and get yourself a 70-300 VR which will give you the ability to do great portraits as well as sport / wildlife shooting... They are about $550...
Remember, you can almost always take a few steps forward towards your subject (or just simply lean and reach your arms closer) to get the 50mm equivalent with the 35mm lens, but you can't always move further away from your subject with a 50mm to get the 35mm equivalent (size of room, aka a wall is there) So to me, the 35mm on a crop sensor is the one to get.
the 50 1.4 is about $200 more than the 50 1.8g ... and since you can just move up a step or 2 to get the 50mm out of your 35mm... the ONLY thing you would be paying for is 2/3 of a stop of light increase for the 1.4... so that's $100 per 33% light increase... on a budget with no income... this seems wasteful... to say the least
To me, your limited budget would be better spent on getting a 70-300VR so you can do Portrait, sport, and wildlife shooting... when you get a job and can then readily buy new lenses at your leisure, then you should think about upgrading to a 1.4 or 1.2 lens IF, and ONLY IF... you shoot in really low light situations ALOT, and your camera doesn't have great ISO performance... Afterall, 2/3 stop faster aperture means 2/3 stop less ISO noise or 2/3 stop faster shutter speed for freezing action better in low light..

@WoshBabyWosh besides the absense of focusing motor, D lenses has a manual aperture ring that G lenses doesn't have. I find manual aperture ring useful when I reverse the lens for macro shots

I would assume the larger filter thread sized is due to the slightly larger body to accompany the focusing motor.

When you say "will work on all Nikon bodies" do you mean that this lens will behave as a normal 50mm lens on a crop sensor? Or will I have the issue of it becoming more of a 60mm on a crop sensor? Thanks Jared!
+Hiker1792 it will be the equivalent of a 75mm on a crop sensor, all lenses are measured as if on a full frame. The reason this will work on the 3*** or 5*** cameras is because it has a focus motor whereas the old D lens needed a camera with a built in focus motor

I agree, I picked up the 50d and am shooting on my D7000. It's fantastic and the price is right. For me, I don't see a need for the 1.4, the 1.8 does everything I need it to do. It's a fantastic , good value portrait lens! Get the HR-2 lens hood, it not only blocks out unwanted light, it really compliments the lens nicely!

how does the old E series 50 mm 1.8 compare against these when it comes to picture quality? I know this only works in manual mode...
Thanks for posting. I have the 1.8D would like to get the 1.8G because it's supposed to have smoother bokeh. But the D300 is the only body I could use it on because there's no aperture ring. It wouldn't be usable on my N6006, F2, or any older film body I may get in the future.

While a concluding opinion would have not been a disappointment, I, for one, appreciate being able to view the high-res images for myself, without risking a bias that I may obtain from hearing Jared's opinion beforehand.
