Not having any old Nikon glass, I opted to save a few bucks when I got my Z6 II and didn't get the FTZ. I have been really loving my z 50 1.8, z 105 2.8 macro and z 20mm 1.8. I really can't be happier....or could I. :D I have been debating getting a FTZ to try out some of the 'classic' old glass. For now....just living the Z life. You’re right-the 50mm g lens is amazing. I have it on my new Z fc (gorgeous camera!) and an 85 1.8 s on my z6 II, and for giggles, shot portraits with both kits simultaneously. And honestly, the photos are equally amazing, g and s lenses. I thought I’d sell the 50mm 1.8g eventually, but I might just keep it.

I don't get why people don't like the new Z lenses (not all of them are S lenses, those are the premium lenses). I really like that they're not overstated or have all kind of weird writings and rings. They're not drawing any attention.

I really like the way the older G lenses render. I have the 50 1.4G and the colors are superb. I cant match it with the Z lens, its more than a white balance difference. Skin tones are beautiful, and you can find them used for $225-250. Its downfall is the focus is terrible 8( But its still worth it. The 70-300 afp is a fantastic all around lens too. Focus is silent and fast.

This video is a perfect illustration of the principle "sharpness is not everything" - the G-lens color rendition is so much better, so 3-dimensional, contrasts just awesome... when you compare tnem like that one by one this difference is really obvious

Omar - you are a witty and entertaining fellow. I think you analysis was very good of the differences between the 50 1.8G and the 50 1.8 S lens and why one might choose on over the other. I would add a couple points:
First, the 50 1.8 S lens is likely the best 50 1.8 lens made (by any manufacturer) for under 2-3K and it is around $500. It competes head to head with Zeiss lenses that are north of $3k, so if someone has the $500 for this lens, it is likely the best bang for the buck in lens purchases period - certainly one of the best. This takes nothing away from the 50 1.8 G if someone has it and likes it, and it was a good lens for its price point, but the 50 1.8 S is definitively the better lens in every way, so if someone can afford it they should get it.
Secondly and this builds on the last point, the 50 1.8 S is hands down the better video lens. I know that you were reviewing based on still shooting only, and that is valid, but for those that want the most out of their Z cameras, video should be considered. In this case, the 50 1.8 S lens has virually silent AF whereas the 1.8 G lens is very noisy when it focuses (on video), and more importantly, the 50 1.8 S has NO focus breathing at all. It is truly astounding. The engineering that was put into this lens is staggering. It is the sharpest 50 1.8 I've seen, and the research confirms this comparing it to $3+K Zeiss lenses, it has incredible edge to edge sharpness - something that the G lenses cannot obtain due to the greater flange distance (still true on the FTZ adaptor), and finally zero focus breathing - compare this to Canon's new RF 50 1.8 - which is a great lens for stills and is inexpensive only $199 (to Canon's credit), but it focus breathes terribly making it a less than optimal choice for video.
That all said, as you have pointed out, the FTZ adaptor is pretty amazing. I still use my 58 1.4 G lens and my 105 1.4 E lens with the FTZ adaptor and both of these lenses are actually better on the Z cameras than they ever were on the DSLR's. The IQ is equally good as it ever was, but now both lenses have focusing points across the frame allowing for better/easier composition acquisition, and they now have 3 axis image stabilization whereas before on the DSLR's they had none. I will likely never get rid of these lenses - I enjoy them more than ever now on the Z cameras than I did before native to DSLR.
In particular the 105 1.4 E lens is a beast of a lens with a very special output that is not replicated in other lenses - it is probably the best portrait lens that Nikon has ever made next to the 200mm f/2 lens but that beast is over $5k. Given that own this lens, and based on your comments when holding it in this video, I am guessing that you feel the same way.
I look forward to your video on the subject :)
    -B

Man I have a love hate relationship with the 50mm z 1.8s. It is sharp and the clarity is amazing. It’s almost too perfect. So perfect that when I use other glass I miss that sharpness. When I go “artsy “ with the voightlander 58mm f1.4 or the voightlander 40mm f1.4, although I LOVE the rendering of both those lenses I miss the crispiness of 50z. The 50z lacks a bit of character. I would never ditch it there is something about the lens I love and it spoils you even when I go artsy. 1st world problems lol. I did buy the ftz adapter with the 85mm f1.4g and wow. Great lens and the ftz is fantastic. It also sends exif data to the camera when I use the voightlander 58mm on it as well as allowing me to use in camera aperture adjustment. I’m digging it. I’m going to get some more g series glass. Next up is the 35mm f1.8g. I can’t see myself paying the premium for the 35mm z. It’s too big as well. Anyhow like you Omar I’m a Fuji shooter but have ventured into the z system and loving it. You’re so right about that grip. It’s awesome. First love is Fuji (I have the XT-3 and the gfx 50R) but for paid work I can see myself using mostly Nikon. So many awesome choices these days

I came from an Olympus system to the Nikon Z system. When I bought my Z5 I was offered the FTZ adapter for $99. I took it! I didn't know how well it would work, but I took the chance and am very pleased with the ZTF (especially since it has it's own tripod mount). When I bought the Z5 I got the 24-200 and 85mm f1.8 G. I then bought the 50mm f1.8 new (probably paid too much) and I love it! For my portraits it has been great. When walking around I carry it and my Tamron 17-35. Since they are both F mounts the adapter just stays on! Thanks for sharing, but you really should change the title to include the ZTF in the title! LOL! Till next time...

Quite surprised how similar size of adapted 50/1.8G vs 50/1.8S, and the amount of wasted exterior space of Nikon Z glass, could have fitted a Fn button, Fn ring/aperture ring, and some extra hard points for grippage during lens swaps

I love my old 50mm f/1.8G, in fact, I think it's better in some ways than my new Canon RF 50mm f/1.8. The 50 1.8 is actually a good sports lens, indoor sports, basketball in a high school gym with weak lights, that is where a 50 1.8 shines for sports, volleyball too. That said, I was impressed by the improved sharpness from the S. Oh, let's talk about S. I think S is Nikon's Copy of putting a letter on their top-line lenses, kind of like like Canon put an L on their's to denote that. So, all the Nikon Z mount lenses are Z but only the best get that S designation. I always enjoy your videos, Omar.

Either way you slice it, there is no advantage in going mirrorless as far as weight and compactness. The Z6II with the G lens and adapter is exactly the same weight as the D750 and the 50mm G lens (1026 grams). Give me the digital version (full frame) of the Nikon FE or FM with old-style compact lenses. I think that's what us hobbyists want (IMHO).

Same here. Almost all of my D lenses are gone, just lovely non Ai, Ai and Ai-S lenses left to be used for the next decades.
My only Autofocus lenses in use are the Fujinon/Haselblad HC lenses for the H system.
Third system is Leica M with vintage Leitz glass.

Just today made the jump to the 50mm Z! I had three "F" lenses, sold them on eBay and immediately bought the 50z from NIKON USA! It was on sale as a refurb for under $500! I watched this video months ago... never forgot what you said about the lens. Just an update...

The 50mm 1.8G is the best bang for the buck out there : way sharper than the 1.4G at 1.8-2.8, quick focus, sturdy and light weight. The Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art, HSM or the Tamron 45mm 1.8 VC are excellent alternatives too, not sure if they work with the FTZ2 adapter though

Omar! This street photographer bit the bullet and got the z6ii. Your reviews really helped! However, I don't have but one lens that will autofocus, unfortunately. I have older D and G lenses. HOWEVER, my 50mm 1.8 D actually is beautiful if you turn on peak focusing and register your lens inside the menu. It actually is a whole new way of shooting and quite impressive! Taking it on a full spin this weekend. Now the problem is all these damn cameras! Dragging my Fuji x-t3 and the Nikon with me... let's see who shines. Thanks as always for your videos!

As a lot of people tend to go mirrorless, I had lots of opportunities to get FX lenses. Got me a 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 50/1.4 and also a 105/1.4. All used and in very good condition. If my pictures are bad it's not because of the lenses ;-)
For me the Z lenses are way too expensive, even the f1. 8 versions.
If I ever get a Z9 I would still use those lenses with a FTZ2.
And by the way: If I would need a job with a lightweight camera I'd take my Panasonic Gx9.
    Thx for showing this, Omar!

Excellent as usual. However for us old guys who are transitioning from DSLRs to Z, and who have a collection older glass, including the AF-S 50mm f1.4G, I would be interested to know how it fares in comparison to the Z mount 50mm f1.8.

That 50mm 1.8S is an amazing value. It’s just as sharp as the $2k+ 50mm 1.2S. I own both and contemplating selling the 1.2 to buy a different focal length. The z6ii handles so well in low light I don’t think the 1.2 is required but that’s just my experience and the way I shoot.

Tried two 50 G, 1.8 & 1.4 on Z CameraS, yes 2 of of them. The 18 was very sharp and I like it better than numerous faster 50. Downside is AF “hunts” in low light indoors. Takes 1 to 2 sec to focus. They go to minimum, then infinity, then come back to focus. 40 2.8 S is bargain of the Century. Or get the Nikon Z.

I have the old and the new...the new 50mm is insanely good. One of the things I don't like about the adapted lenses is the drop in MP when using adapted G lenses. The new 50mm is also soooo quiet! That quiet is really great for recording video as sometimes the lens focusing can be picked up by your mic (if not off camera). The 50mm S is definitely a fantastic lens. :)

@@fthprodphoto-video5357 when you use a dx lens adapted with the FTZ on the Z6II you drop to like 10MP as I understand it.

I am a professional photographer and shot film until about 2000 when I went digital . Of course I now shoot
with state of the art digital cameras........they are very powerful tools indeed.....BUT ......I fully agree with what
you have said about the look of digital vs film .......and agree about the pixel peeping neurosis and the excessive
sharpness that many digital cameas (lenses, brands) clearly 'suffer' from when compared to a more filmic look.
The unfortunate fact is that many younger shooters have and never will have the experience base which will give
them the film reference point ......ie they were born into digital and they dont know anything else . Kudos for your
    views .

So true..I use a 50mm 1.8 G with the z5 and rented out the 50 and 85 S lens. Literally no difference in picture quality between the 50 mm lenses unless you really zoom in... but the autofocus is spot on for 50mm S line when u click photos of your little one running around. The 50mm S version feels well stitched for the camera only for the autofocus situation other than the fact I already own the 50MM 1.8 G version, I didn't feel like getting the S counter part.
But I found 85mm 1.8 S was a tad bit sharper in terms of image quality

Not sure I agree with you on this. The G lens is exceptional at mid apertures but at wider apertures it goes to the crapper, wide open is horrible. The new lens is exceptional at all apertures. This means when using the new one you have no limitations.

Yes, I'm a cheapskate! Fully admitting it proudly! Got a used D750 with a bunch of used lenses and loving it. Looked up the MTF of my F 50mm f/1.8 G, the Z 50mm f/1.8 S and the Z 40mm/2. Even that 40mm is better than my lens if the charts are to be taken at face value. So if I go Z (which might be in a year or so because I'm cheap) I might get that one.

  • @tor2919

The G 50 also has a lot of LoCA compared with the 50S. And that's very difficult to fix in post. Also the G lens isn't good for video unlike the 50S. The sharpness differences, and differences in colour contrast will be evident in prints. But The older lens is still a good lens and totally a viable transitional lens. If you like bokeh, if you like mojo, if you like portraiture, Omar, you owe yourself to try the 58mm f1.4G. That's a magical lens. Already a cult classic. I bet you my Z6 it will run rings around your Sigma for portraiture magic!
