  • The Nikon 28-80mm G is a very light, decently sharp mid-range zoom (perfect for travel, walk-around, or backup). You can find it on eBay in great condition for ~$40. A great bargain for both DX and FX shooters!

      @@deaththink Thanks! And yes it's only available on the used market now. Available in silver and black. Sometimes you can also do a search on eBay for "F65 camera" and this lens might be included with it (they were sold as a kit back in the day). Just have to look at the photos to make sure that it's this exact model (F/3.3-5.6).

    I love this lens ! So much so I got another one and I will get 2 more. I love buying used gear, and after reading a review of this little gem I got one. Took it for a spin on the D600 and the D7000, WOW. I went and found another one. This started doing more research and it seems that Nikon and Pentax put a lot in their humble kit lenses. I have an obscene amount of gear from the film days and after some testing on my own I have found some really remarkable lenses. I don't fall for all the "pro" lens hype. This lens and the Pentax 35-80mm are sharp and have great color. Did I mention decent close focusing ? You can't go wrong with this remarkable and affordable lens. On a crop sensor camera I feel that it is a great low cost portrait lens. Side note here, the Nikon 80-200mm 5.6 kit lens is a great companion to the 28-80mm. Plastic yes, but the glass inside is incredible. The best part is a quality image at a very low price.

PERFECT crisp and clean and SHARP shots for such a low budget lens. I don't shoot for bokeh, I shoot to make money and it's made me money, LOTS of it. It compresses the background perfect for me and not one single client complained about "why is the background not fully blown smooth out putting me in dead space?"... aperture won't stop you from shooting weddings. Not everything needs F1.2. Use it for your carry out and you can see for yourself, TO ME it's a fantastic lens.

      Hi there - thanks to this awesome review I bought the lens only this week ! Here's my thoughts:
      1. What a fantastic little lens, works wonders on my film F80 and digital D610, in terms of focus and versatility
      2. The lens is tack sharp across the entire frame between f8 and f11, I compared it at 35mm @f8 with my 35mm f2 AF-D prime and they're both the same at my primes' f5.6. However that's perfectly ok, as I use its moving f3.3-f5.6 for shallow dof anyhow
      3. The lens' resolution is at it's weakest at 28mm (soft in the extreme corners) but perfectly fine onwards up to its 80mm
      4. The bokeh at 80mm is smooth, and its close focusing distance for plants is a great bonus
      ... in summary this little lens is a hidden gem, and when accept what it can and can't do, you'll discover it's a fantastic walk-about lens.
      All credit to you @lensvana for making this review, and bringing it to our attention, super helpful !!

    It's a great stupid little lens. I bought mine as new old stock about 10 years ago, just because I wanted the grey silver colored lens to match a 35mm body (F50 or F60 I forget) that I bought second hand. Yes, I know it's stupid. I actually got more use of this lens on my old D100 (DX, at that), than I did on the film camera, just because it covered exactly the range I was frequently photographing. It is noisy to use the in-body focus motor, but it's actually not a lot of terms of the screw, so it focuses surprisingly quickly. The other reason this lens is good on a DX body, is that most of the barrel extortion doesn't show up. I tried this lens on my D800E just for the hell of it, and it worked well, though the range is a little close for me. On my D850, somehow cannot get a clear photo with it, even stopped down to F8 or F9. Not really sure what's going on there, because my everyday lens on the D850 is the 24-120 f/4, and it's hard not to get a sharp photo with it. Further, it shoots nice sharp photos on my D7100 (thankfully the focus motor is quieter than the one on the D100), so I'm really not sure why the d D850 doesn't like it.
    The bad side of this lens, other than not the range I typically want on FX, is that it almost scares me how cheap it feels. I'm almost afraid to put the camera in its bag with this lens attached.

      Thanks for sharing! Didn't think we'd hear from someone testing this out on the higher resolution bodies (D800E, D850), and yet here we are :) Not sure what's going on either, but hey at least it works great with the D7100.

      @@lensvana I tried a bunch of my basic cheap lenses on those two. Results range from complete crap, to surprisingly good. Sigma-built 100-300 4.5-6.7 is so bad that it seems they must have tried to design such a crappy lens. Then again, I bought it for $50 15 years ago. It is a film lens, so FX format, but maybe one or of 10 photos might actually be sharp, regardless of aperture. I didn't notice this on 35mm, but I usually shot print film and not slide film. I'm sure Ektachrome wouldn't like this lens, either.

    • @MrZorbatron
      @MrZorbatron 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lensvana My everyday on the D850 is the 24-120 f/4G or the old 50mm 1.4D, so I would love to find a decent zoom that gets around 300mm. I have a 70-200 f/4G, but it's long enough to be a little bit awkward to walk around with. I don't like the 28-300, because it's just not a great lens. This is one reason I still use my E-5 as extensively as I do. I have a dozen good lenses for it, and I can carry a number of them easily due to their relatively small size. I can carry five in the space of 300 decent FX lenses. I don't have a truly good FX lens between the 70-200 (also have 70-200 2.8, which weighs about 3 pounds), and the 200-500, which you're not going to carry around unless you know you will need it (unless you really need the extra exercise).
      I've actually been starting to cut down my DX collection. Giving away my 18-200 because the 18-105 is sharper. I don't even have an 18-55 in my lineup, so I will look into the AFP model you mentioned. I actually like my 18-105, but those lenses seem to have a lot of standard deviation between samples, and I sold my second one barely used for that reason. The 18-105 is either really really good for a $300 kit lens, or just good enough. I'm not sure if you just need to avoid one built in a Monday or what.
      To me, the D7100 is hardest test on a lens for sharpness, since it has the highest pixel density of any of my cameras, so at least toward the center of the frame, it is the hardest critic.

    • @lensvana
      @lensvana  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MrZorbatron Knowing what you want is the hard part - it's much easier to acquire equipment once you have a good idea of what exactly you need! The FX version of the AF-P 70-300mm VR is highly regarded, and will feel like nothing compared to your existing teles. That's the one I'd aim for. There's also the Tamron 100-400mm but only if you really, really need the 400mm.
      You're right about the D7100, I have one myself and that 24 MP APC-S sensor can be unforgiving. Good glass and great shot discipline required. I've enjoyed using the AF-P lenses with it, and of course both the 50mm 1.8G and 85mm F1.8G pair nicely.

      You can even get this lens + n75 for $50 if you see a good deal! Happy shooting! n80/f80 + 50mm F1.8 AF is also a classic Nikon combo that would be fun for film photography

    i use this lens with my d700. good results and never have to bring other lenses with me. did not have interest in getting more nikkor lenses after having this one. but it is a very ugly lens and makes you feel silly shooting with it and no longer feel line stanley kubrick pointing this thing

      Hah! You're right - it's not a beautiful looking lens... At the minimum it needs a lens hood to look cooler. But Kubrick would approve of doing a lot with minimal equipment :)
