    The Real Difference Between Nikon/Nikkor 50mm 1.8 d and g Lenses.
    Nikon 50mm f1.8 G and D have always confused a lot of people when they are on the market for buying one of these Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lenses. Here in this video i am trying to eliminate this confusion once and for all.
    See the real differences between Nikon 50mm f1.8g and f1.8d lens in this video. Simply speaking, Nikon D lenses are always manual and G lenses come with an Auto focusing motor in it.

    I have only one question. I want to buy this 1.8D lens for macro photography and I plan to use it with a reverse ring. I know that the autofocus wouldn't work BUT will I be able to change the aperture via the external aperture ring...with a reverse ring???

    Can you plz tell me:
    1) whether I can control the aperture ring of 50mm 1.8 D through command dial of my camera D7200?
    how to do this? I heard somewhere that you need to lock the aperture ring at F22 before fitting it with the camera..please elaborate
    2) I want to to shoot with D7200 & 50mm 1.8D in totally manual mode... because I am doing videos most of the time.... In that case, should I place the (AF/M) toggle switch of the camera body in the manual mode?
    3) Is the 50 mm 1.4D an yet better option? Considering the fact that you get more background blur and bokeh?

  • @ilonkadaz-alwaysandforever9114
    @ilonkadaz-alwaysandforever9114 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The 50mm 1.8 D, does work with some lower end DX bodies. The D50 and D70, both have autofocus motors built in.
    You can use the aperture ring when using a reversing ring or passive (unconnected) extension tubes.
    Locate a small switch beneath where it reads; 1:1.8D and move the switch to the 'up' position. The aperture ring now moves freely.
    When re-attaching this lens to your camera body, rotate the aperture ring to the f22 position, then move the switch to the 'down' position.
    I have had many enjoyable hours when using a reversing ring or extension tubes with the 1.8 D.
    A fabulous lens!

    Another point to add is that the bokeh is different between the two lenses, with the G having a more rounded bokeh due to its curved aperture blades compared to the more hexagonal bokeh of the D lens. For many people the bokeh quality is important so I wanted to throw that out there in case people skim comments for more information.

    I have a 50mm D lens and an 85mm G lens that I use on a d750 body. I keep having issues with my 50mm D lens fishing around for the focus and taking a bit more time to focus than all my other lenses. The 85mm G lens seems to find focus much quicker and reliably. Has anyone else found the 50mm G focuses better than the D series on a d750? I'm considering trading in the 50mm D for a G lens if my camera can use it without fishing around for the focus as much.

    Excellent. I learned the hard way. Watched tons of videos and decided to buy the D to save money for my 3300. Bought it off eBay in great condition but when I put it on my camera, no about focus. After searching google I learned I did not have internal motor. I used the d lens for a month as a Manuel lens. I stopped in Best Buy to try the G and was amazed at the difference. I decided to buy a G lens locally off Craigslist today. I love it. Just posted my D lens. Wish I have seen this first. Thanks

    does crop sensor d7200 have the same ability as full sensor to help auto focus the D version?

    • @tsfkar
      @tsfkar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +jethro_my Yes The 50mm f/1.8d will autofocus perfectly on the DX D7200 (as well as on the D7100, D7000 and D90). It has little to do with FX/DX,. However, the entry model DX bodies (D3x00, D5x00, D40) lack an autofocusmotor in the body). The D7200 does have an autofocus motor in the body.

    • @tsfkar
      @tsfkar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Ethan Clark I'm pretty sure you can. Because the d3200 has no autofocus motor in the body, the lens behaves as a manual focus lens. That's the only limitation. For shooting films instead of stills, some people even prefer to focus manually.

    Silly question: if I want to change the aperture of the 1.8 D mounted on a D3300 can I do it from the camera or it can only be done on the lens aperture ring?
    I don't really care for autofocus, I never use it. But I've never used an aperture ring

    • @sleeplessdawg8016
      @sleeplessdawg8016 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      On the D lenses you lock the aperture ring to minimum aperture (f/22 on the 50mm 1.8D) before mounting them to modern cameras like your D3300. After that one extra step, the aperture is controlled through the camera just like it is on your G lens.

    + Epic Aperture you need to remake this video after you do your homework because you are wrong the 1.8D 50mm autofocus does work on DX cameras the autofocus doesn't work on lower end Nikon body's but it the autofocus works just fine on all of the 7000 series cameras know what your saying before you go off and make a video and furthermore that 50mm 1.8d lens has a screw drive autofocusing which works on camera with internal autofocusing motors like the 7000 series that Nikon has been making for years now

    Lot of positive comments. What everyone needs to know is the many DX (cropped sensor) cameras have built-in motor (e.g. Nikon D7100, D7200). It is not true that only FX cameras have the motor. While publishing this video in June 2015, this is a huge misleading information. Secondly, I didn't like the sudden spike in sound level when changing topics. That is simply silly.

    thanx in advance :)

    • @EpicAperture
      @EpicAperture  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Angkon Ahmed Hey, both of those are good start up lenses. I personally have not use either of those. But i don't think there would be an issue of pictures being soft if you use a good tripod and possible a shutter release of some sort on full zoom to prevent any shaking movements. Since it is not a constant Aperture, the softening issue gets rectified to a certain extend by that itself, if any.
      Also, if you are using a post processing program like lightroom, it won't be an issue. May i ask what kind of photos are you looking to take with this lens?.

    Main reason I bought Nikkor AF 50mm 1/1.8D (for my Nikon D610)was,that this lens have a very small amount (0.3%) of barrel distortion.
    Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1/1.8G is probably better lens,but it has more distortion (1.1%).

      Hey there, Yes it should work on a D90, because D90 body has a AF screw on its F mount.

      Yes you can but without autofocus! You need build-in autofocus motor in the body of the camera for this lens!

    Which of the two gives a better Bokeh ? 1.8D or 1.8G ? I am using a D3300 and both will be good for Portrait shoots at 1.5x.
    Thanks.

      For bokeh the G is better, for overall imagine quality the D is waaaaaay better.

    Hey Hi
    Thanks for the video. I have a question.
    I have a Nikon D7000 when i connect my 18-140mm lens i was able to modify F number in any setting(M,AS).
    But when i connect 50mm 1.8G i am unable to change the F number to any value and it just display's as the F0.
    Can you please let me know how to change the F number ?
    Thanks in advance.

      Hello Sureddy Reddy, Thanks for your question.
      This is usually caused when the probes on your lens does not make proper contact with the camera body. You might want to check the contact point at the back end of your 50mm lens(8 nos) and see if all of the are of same height. sometimes dust could get in the way and one or more of these contacts could be pressed down.
      I would suggest that you clean these contacts. Use caution not to wreck anything if you use any household items to probe those. Also it would be a good idea to wipe out the contact points in the camera.
      **-USE CAUTION AND DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK-**
      If you feel not confident enough to do this, take your camera and lens to a local camera shop and they should be able to help you out.
      Also, if the above fix did not help you, you might need to replace the base plate, which would require a bit of disassembly/repair. Giving a visit to your local camera shop would still be a good option.
      Please let everyone here know if this helped!!. Have a good one!

    All true but the (g) lens does work on the older DX crop sensor bodies such as the D80 and D90 which have motors built into the camera.

      +Carl Bradley thats bs. you can use both D and G versions on cameras with built in motors. just like any other dslr(canon sony etc) motor in your lens operates with your dslr thru the chip which also controls your aperture. The only thing he was wrong about tho is that only fullframe cameras has motors whichs is not true
