yeah i would love to see some head to heads. I reserved an ID4 since Toyota was too slow putting out the BZ4x. Currently driving a Prius C. With only 7000 of these this year its going to be hard to get one.
Kirk, I really enjoy car news and you've become a staple of my media consumption. In the past few days, I started new car shopping. It's so incredibly frustrating. I understand opportunistic dealers will try to charge as much as they can, but they still aren't doing so transparently. Every dealer has their form of bait and switch. Market adjustment. Or tons of unwanted add ons at a premium. Or won't sell if you don't finance through them. Covid sanitation charges. Multiple documentation fees. And often a combination of all of them. I've owned 7 new cars in my life and have never gone to a dealer for service or warranty work. I never used to mind that dealers had inserted themselves unnecessarily into the fiduciary chain, but it's just disgusting now. At a certain point, it taints this entire automotive ecosystem and ancillary industries, including yours. I know you have a special place in your heart for dealerships, having come from one, but this environment is disgusting. Like, $%#^ the automotive industry, especially dealers. Manufacturers aren't porking us with random market adjustments. Dealers are absolutely unnecessary bloodsuckers. I'm ready to buy new in Canada and drive it back over. It's much easier than it sounds.

@@aurorajones8481 so it requires coordination but for me, because I know exactly what level of pain in the butt it is, is still better than dealers in the US playing games. Even being somewhat savvy, I still seem to be falling for outright lies by US dealers to get me into the showroom floor. In Canada, they don't seem to sell above msrp and for many cars, the conversion rate on the dollar actually makes rhe car a little cheaper. Yes, I'll blow a weekend. Yes, I'll put some initial miles on the car. It's still better than 15% over msrp and dealing with shady practices. I've got a few options I'm checking out here because if the price is right, of course I'd rather not blow a weekend. But canada is looking pretty sweet right now.

Great review! I see so many people knocking this car but at the same time praise the ID4. Other than a slight range advantage and charge speed in the ID4, how is it better than the bZ4X or Solterra in anyway?

A Toyota will definitely be my first EV if I ever decide to get one.
Electric vehicles are completely different from internal combustion engine vehicles. Toyota's overall electric vehicle technology level is very low.

Why wouldn’t you consider another brand? For instance a Tesla Model Y. Admittedly the Tesla is few thousand more dollars but it has way better range, faster acceleration, more storage space (the Toyota doesn’t even have a frunk), faster charging (250kw instead of only 100kw., access to superior DC superchargers throughout the US and Canada. Also Tesla has the highest consumer reports customer satisfaction rating of any other manufacturer. Even the Ford MachE is superior to this Toyota as is the Polestar 2.
@@yahyawarsi2632 if Toyota knows what they are doing in regards BEv’s why does this vehicle have less range, slower charging, much slower acceleration, less storage capacity (for gawds sake it doesn’t even have a frunk) and lacks sophisticated driver assist technology when compared to say Tesla. And before you say anything about quality please note that Tesla has the highest consumer reports owner satisfaction rating of any other car manufacturer. (That said I will admit that Toyotas build quality is better that Tesla. So…if relatively minor build quality issues bother you perhaps it’s best to go for the Toyota! 😂

How is possible to propose those awful black cladding above the wheels and even get them accepted by Toyota? It is out of this world.
The car itself is actually beautifully designed, it is in same line with id4, model y etc.
If you just read opinions around, nobody likes these claddings, so why such a big company must put themselves into this, there will be a lot of costumers who will prefer the other competitors just because of the claddings. I guess Toyota doesn't like to win easy
I concur, Lexus did away with the cladding for their UX. Not sure why Toyota kept the cladding it looks awful.
The only option is the all black model which eliminates the contrast. It is, indeed, funky looking. It would be _perfect_ with a solid colorway option. Hopefully, something Toyota is going to consider for the next year.
There are plenty of cars out there putting black cladding to 'look tough'. They don't do it if people hate it. People online are far more vocal but they are a minority. Maybe the average mass market consumers really have bad taste for cars.
@@SkyWKing Agreed, it's the people trying to make vehicles look "tough" it's honestly very amusing. The cladding in general does not make a vehicle look tough at all. It makes sense though they try to appeal to the consumers that purchase "rugged" vehicles like Jeep, Ford, Subaru, etc. that need to drive in "dirt".

This vehicle seems like Toyota is really taking a bet on longevity and reliability, which they've always done, but it's interesting to see how that will play out in the EV world when range anxiety is a thing and the "ability" to travel is limited even if most people won't travel.
Charge speeds and range with the $42k starting price point makes this a non-starter for me, especially if toyota runs out of federal incentives before this thing ships. Would be a good commuter and decent for short trips, but vehicles in this price point really need to be road-trip worthy in my book. Was excited for "the future" of toyota vehicles but these specs just feels so ho hum.
Only EVs that are road trip worthy imo are teslas. I'd still take an ice car for any longer trip. Bz4x would be a good daily as your second car being ice for trips.
From my understanding, the limited charging is so that the battery can retain 90% of it's capacity after 10 years. It's all about preferences and there are more and more options out there.
@@KirkKreifels I couldn't disagree more. There are tons of videos of various EVs not labeled Tesla going on road trips. Whatever issues you may run into are with the chargers not the cars themselves.
@@KirkKreifels it is just not acceptable to pay the same price for a city car as for a road tripping ev. This car is a complete and utter failure. Just because Toyota is 4 years late Toyota think they can offer a car that would have been viable four years ago.
The fact that this is a Toyota will mean that it will eat up the market....if enough people can get one.

Horsepower and Torque are completely different. Torque is what accelerates you i.e. the "pep" you talk about. Horsepower is overall speed traveling and/or speed achieved at the end of that acceleration.

Does it offer one pedal driving/regenerative braking?
From what I've seen/read, it does provide some adjustable regen but nothing approaching real 1-pedal driving. A bit of a miss in my view but not entirely unexpected from Toyota given its conservativeness generally.
Heavy Regen braking button that slows to 4mph, then you have to hit brake to stop

I once thought FWD is good enough , but after I got a Model Y Long Range, AWD, now I have to have AWD, it just driven Lots smoother and better, all wheels are controlled by the computer so unlike the old fashion AWD, you need to test drive one to feel it 😁what a big differences it does make
manual steering controls is somewhat disappointing. Otherwise this car shows a lot of promise for upcoming BEVs from toyota/lexus. Especially the sedans and more specifically, the Lexus BEV IS!

Its good that Toyota & Subaru are collaborating on these 2nd vehicle. But I hope TOYOTA could do more diffentiation on the exterior design against Subaru. Toyota is doing this also with Mazda 2.
Ford was able to do it with Mazda 3, Ford Focus and Volvo, why can't they apply the same process. Beside Toyota is doing it with Supra.
No spare time makes this a challenging sell. A very light off-road vehicle without a spare tire is something to seriously think about.

I checked Gault Toyota in upstate NY on 9/29/22. They are selling these cars at $10k over list. They have two at ~$52k each. That's $62K plus tax or close to $70k and unless you are willing to buy this car for cash figure another $4K to $6K interest on a load. That brings the total to over $75K. Its not worth it.
Kirk, I didn't comment on the day the you could upload the video, but after watching Doug DeMuro's review of a ("topped to the nines") Subaru Solterra* a few days later I have to say THIS IS THE MOST EGREGIOUS USE OF "BADGE ENGINEERING". EVER.
That car Doug reviewed is 99+% this bZ4x Limited AWD, same defects, same specs, even same ground clearance (not even on AWD models vs. FWD on Toyotas vs. AWD on the Subaru).
I thought GM was "King of Badge Engineering", but Toyota and Subaru TOOK THE CAKE ON THIS ONE. Even the BRZ is more different to the GR86 than the Solterra to the bZ4x.
Since Doug lives near San Diego (close to where Toyota had you and other reviewers test the bZ4x) I suspect this Solterra was reviewed on the same week you were in the vicinity.

It is simply a co-developed and engineered car between the two marques. As Toyota is doing the manufacturing at least for the time being more design and interior elements skew to its design language but it absolutely is not a rebadged Toyota or Subaru developed by just one of the companies.
I have heard that Toyota will have a software update in june 2023.
Tested on ice and snow its better than Rav4 and compared with other bev's.
I like it. In 2022, honestly, stuffing a bunch of twinkies in the glove compartment isn’t healthy anyways so no big deal there’s no glove box

I like the all-back and this would be my alternative colour instead of the all-white. Also, some reviews pointed out the lack of a glove box in the BZ. Hi mate. No glove box for the optional heater on the the limited model. Sadly this means XLE doesn't get a box either. No all white model either as all fenders are painted charcoal black

Good one Kirk. This will be a success in the short term. Not sure whether this will be able to compete with Tesla Y though, with the current range. ID4 is going to take a serious hit, just based on the competitiveness which Toyota offers with their global network. Somehow I expected something better from Toyota

You made a very good point. This car's biggest competitor is actually not a Tesla or VW ID.4. It's the RAV4 Prime because they will be sold literally in the same showroom. A salesperson would have to try very very hard to convince the customer to go for the more expensive, less powerful option with range anxiety.
PHEV are a great solution... Manufacturers are scared of making them it seems...must be more money in full ice or full BEV for automakers

Sorry but the range is disappointing. You have to wonder what Toyota was thinking knowing people have range anxiety. There's room in the chassis for a larger battery. Also the placement of the speedometer where it's hidden by the steering wheel is ridiculous.

The new Nissan Ariya, a Tesla, Ionic 5 and Kia EV6 could make it difficult for the bZ4 because they have more power under the car and they charge a lot faster. I think that Toyota needs a few years more to bring a competitive EV to the market.

Why is Toyota still continuing with FWD for their BEVs? Even Honda, hyundai have gone RWD/AWD for their BEVs and even RWD hating VW has gone RWD/AWD for their BEVs.
Because unless you are in the dirt or show at 40mph you really don't need AWD. FWD is better than RWD as the front wheels pull the car around corners while a RWD tends to push the car outwards of it's turn and into oncoming traffic and is safer in the wet.
@@linusa2996 agree that FWD is easier to handle for most drivers, but with modern nanny electronics and traction control, all remain the same. Also for BEVs, FWD loses out on the 'engine load on the driving wheels' advantage when it comes to traction. This is all similar to how Toyota avoided going FWD till the last moment in the early 80s and even then tried to make their first FWD vehicle as RWD feeling as possible ( handling, longitudinal engine config et al ).
@@kl01af6940 RWD is best for straight line acceleration. If you have to turn, you need to lift off the power. In a FWD, you can stay on the power and pull the nose around the corner. It's how a mini with 70hp could catch up to a 250 hp RWD car on a race track.
The charging on this vehicle is an embarrassment. For a 17 year Prius devotee it is painful to see such a conservatively engineered Toyota product.
I think the less mileage the car gets it should be cheaper even with AWD. Also Toyota should learn a lesson with Tesla with over air programming. I’m getting a 2022 Venza this month that has safety 2.0 and now this BZ has 3.0….something wrong there. Even though this model has limited over air. I guess Florida won’t see any BZ4X anytime soon. Florida took a long time just to get a RAV4 Prime. Connecticut probably will get a few. Needs better battery charging.

Toyota has a rep for building cars that work 15-20-30 years after they were built. How's that 20 year old Lucid or that 20 year old Tesla, is Tesla even supporting the car with new batteries?
Cause I know that I can take my 1980 Corolla down to the local dealer and have them get genuine Toyota parts for it or I can go down to the local shop and still get after market parts.
Oh, and the A/C still works as do all the electricals even after I changed from the original bulbs to LED's headlights and other lights.

That means if I need a controller or a sensor for a 20 year old corolla, and I've had those, I can still get one to replace a damaged or failed part. So can you get a replacement cooling pump without having to take it to a dealer and a paying the 400% mark up?

You can speculate based on Toyota history. We don’t know how EV cars will be supported 20 years from now.
