This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Toyota bZ4X full electric SUV. The bZ4X is the first in a series of electric vehicles Toyota will be bringing out built on the e-TNGA platform and bZ stands for Beyond Zero. Toyota plans to expand to around 70 electrified models globally by 2025. This future lineup will feature 15 dedicated BEVs including 7 carrying the Beyond Zero name. There are four trims in Canada and two in the US. In Canada, the L and LE are both FWD models and the two top trims; the XLE and XLE with technology package are AWD. In the US, you have the XLE and Limited trims, each have FWD and AWD options. The bZ4X is quite a spacious EV, it is a little bit wider and 3.7” longer than the RAV4. Where you will see a big difference is in the wheelbase, the bZ4X is 6.3” longer. There is a new AWD system with Xmode, an available feature for the bz4X and a first for Toyota. According to Toyota you get an exhilarating, yet comfortable driving experience suited for everyday driving and light off-roading. In Canada, the bZ4X comes standard with 18” wheels, available 20” an 8” touchscreen is standard but all other trims get a 12.3” touchscreen. One up from the base model on the LE trim is where you’ll find heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Features available on our top trim test model include, a 9-speaker JBL audio system, a fixed panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a foot activated tailgate, power drivers seat, navigation, bird’s eye view camera and light grey SofTex upholstery. The bZ4X has an open and spacious cabin with plenty of legroom in the front and rear similar to a large sedan. There is a mix of materials in the cabin including a soft touch material added to the dashboard and piano black trim is featured throughout the vehicle on the lower trims, a satin material on the higher trims for a more luxurious feel. Only the top trim comes with the option of a black or light grey interior, all other trims have a black interior. Toyota has used sound proofing glass and wind noise reduction features to make the cabin quieter. The fixed panoramic sunroof including a power sunshade is available on the XLE trim and above. The door handles are a specialized shape designed to be ergonomic, making it easier to grip. The base trim gets an 8” touchscreen and all trims above a 12.3” screen. The XLE with the technology package has a digital key that is a feature of the Remote Connect service. Owners can now share vehicle access with ease, making it simple to lock, unlock and start the vehicle with your smartphone for the owner and up to seven friends and family members all through the Toyota app.

Thanks for the great review. We were able to test drive and reserve a BZ4X XLE-AWD + technology package just today! Trading in our old 2011 Highlander for continued Toyota quality in the electric vehicle market. We loved the feel of this when driving. Your review helped make up the minds of these seniors. I know we’ll love it!

You guys are "The most humble and honest car review couple" on TH-cam. Thank you both of you so much for the candid and heartfelt recommendation for everyone of hardworking people in Canada who want to go electric this time. Total agreed with Andrea that most of us should go with LE for max value.

Wow, thank you so much for the kind words, we really appreciate the support, it means a lot. I don't need all the bells and whistles, I just want a good EV and the LE trim works for me. Although this doesn't offer the most range compared to other EV's on the market, it's plenty for my daily drive, I would plug it in every night and keep the battery topped up.

@@andreaspencer9813 Right on, Andrea. I am putting in deposit for LE trims exactly you recommended. I am 100% on the same page with you. Such a good value with federal incentive, and lucky people in BC & Quebec with provincial rebates which makes even more values to get LE.

Awesome review. I'll be in the market for another vehicle in a few years and will likely get an EV (or hybrid at the minimum). Hopefully when the time comes, the prices can come down a bit and the maybe the newer models will address the minor drawbacks of this one. I do find it interesting how, at least on paper, this one seems to be one of the least powerful options, yet it looked brisk enough when driving it. I'd also like to see more range in the future too.

We went on a shorter (320mi/510km), but 1st EV, road trip last weekend in our 2019 BMW i3 EV (no REX) that only has a 160-mile range and we were absolutely fine with plugging into ChargePoint’s L2 and L3 chargers when needed.
Both were in Target/Costco parking lots and we did some shopping while the car gained the 25% charge that we were looking to get. And the hotel had free Level 2 chargers, so everything worked out perfectly.
So, here is the BZ4X with a 100-mile/160-km more range than our i3 and can do everything just better.
I don’t get why people like to complain so much about the range not being enough for road trips! How many road trips are you taking anyway in a year?! 1, 2, maybe 3. Stop with all the whining!

I watch regularly your reviews and they are awesome. However I find that you are biased and always go for Toyota as the best among the vehicles you test. No matter which Toyota model you test they always end up at the first place. However you usually miss to report that the cabin noise is very high and unpleasant during the drive, that interior finishes of their basic models look very, very cheap compared to basic models of their competitors. I have to admit that Toyota's residual value is higher, but then....the car is bought to enjoy its drive, not to think about its value when you sell it.
Anyway, I still like your reviews very much, keep up the good work.

One thing about the entire wheel being heated, I actually quite like having both heated and room temperature areas of my steering wheel. I often move my hands between the heated area to avoid sweating. Toyotas wheels get so hot!

There is probably a reason for it not having a rear windscreen wiper. The angle of the rear screen and the spoiler is probably designed to allow airflow to blow off the water.

This is by far the most comprehensive first drive video of the bZ4X I've seen so far. The 2 hosts are super nice to listen to as well.
I currently drive a well used & oil-burning 2008 RAV4; eagerly wanting to replace it with this model. $63K for the top trim is expensive, but not totally unexpected. If it had a Lexus badge it would make sense. I'll have to wait a bit until one pops up used in a year or two (with Canadian tax credits hopefully depreciating them right away).
At first I had mixed feelings of how the exterior looked (love the white interior though!). The dark fender flares look sharp in silver exterior colour but the matte body cladding on the lower trims is definitely a turn off.

This is a great review, i wish this SUV merited the treatment. I'm in the market to trade our Tesla 3LR for an ev which can do some light off roading. Lack of AWD with range to drive to cottage country is the first problem. Range, cheaped out internal options, lack of frunk make me conclude that it's better to wait for gen2, get the Volvo XC40 recharge, or think intensively about the KIA EV6.

The L and LE do come with 18 inch alloy wheels but they have plastic wheel covers over them.
I guess they had to do these cuts to get the base L down to $44990 Canadian.

that may have been the case but they are now well positioned for both an electric and hydrogen powered future based on their already announced investments in factories, solid-state battery development, and Woven City. Don't discount the company that pioneered the hybrid revolution and once collaborated with Tesla. They just need time to pivot.

Sadly, it looks like they took the "Advanced Parking" feature out of the production model (the top right button in the middle console is gone, and I can't find it in any of the details of the official production model paperwork). This is really too bad, because I love this parking feature in my Prius Prime.
