DRIVEN: New Toyota BZ4X electric. Has it been worth the wait? / Electrifying

  • We've waited a LONG time for Toyota to launch its first fully-electric car. But finally, the brand's all-new bZ4X SUV has landed. It may look like the kind of name that appeared after a cat walked across a computer keyboard, but the Toyota bZ4X has a lot going for it.
There’s a water-cooled 71.4kWh battery built into the structure under the floor for added rigidity, and it comes with either one motor driving the front wheels with 201bhp and 317 miles of range - depending on the spec - or an all-wheel drive version with two 107bhp motors at either end. That one has 215bhp and a possible 286 miles of range. They’re excellent figures - especially with the single-motor version breaking the magic 300 mile barrier with 4.4miles per kWh efficiency. That’s properly competitive.
Join Tom as he puts Toyota's first fully electric SUV to the test.

My biggest problem with the BZ4X is the pricing and availability. They are very hard to get and stealerships are marking them up to almost double the price. At that point, I might as well order a Model Y. Last year, I immediately turned down my RAV4 Prime order when the stealership sprung a big markup by surprise. I just got the Venza XLE instead to replace my Honda CR-V which was becoming troublesome and really due for replacement.
Basically, if you are wealthy and have money to burn, order the Model Y. Otherwise, stick with a hybrid like the Camry LE hybrid if you really need to buy a new car right now. Best choice is just to hang on to what you have if it's still working fine.

Why is it that Toyota just can’t do attractive?? Practical, functional… If your spending north of £40k you want something that looks good!! I take yr point that maybe it looks better in the flesh but it’s hardly a ‘pride in ownership’ vehicle. Great review and thanks for the detail but it felt at times apologetic for the shortcomings, as if you really wanted it to succeed in some areas but it fell slightly short.
This is a vehicle that provokes an ‘ok, solid performer’ but for me wouldn’t land in the top 3 and get a ‘I’m going to investigate this tomorrow with a dealer’.

It would be great for them to come out with cheaper smaller 100% EV models too. The "Prius C" has more cabin and boot space than a Yaris. Toyota New Zealand no doubt will start selling this for NZ$89,000 which many people won't be able to afford, and I say this as a middle class earner, not someone on minimum wage. Hyundai and Nissan sell their EV's starting from only $59,000. The upside with Toyota vs Hyundai & Nissan, is that Toyota New Zealand all their dealership locations have a service centre onsite, so you don't have to go to 3rd party authorized garages for repairs and servicing, something which you'll have to do if you have a Nissan or Hyundai as those companies don't have combined service centres, which gives Toyota a real advantage. I've witnessed too that Toyota NZ service staff have better etiquette than Nissan and Hyundai and Ford.

What is highly disappointing is that one of their claims for delayed release of a BEV was due to the solid state battery technology they are supposedly working on. This car clearly doesn’t use solid state, (or there would have been a fanfare about better range, mega-faster charging etc), which makes me think that they are way behind on development of these superior batteries and someone on the Toyota board has ordered them to just chuck something out to join the competition. Excellent video - it's always refreshing to come across a fair and honest assessment of a new EV.
It's pleasing to my eye from a design point of view and good to see that although Toyota have been very late to the EV party, their first dedicated model seems to be very good.
Toyota have long been aware that the majority of car owners don't drive like lunatics, they just want a quiet, relaxing, efficient car that is uber reliable. The bZ4X seems to tick all of those boxes and I suspect they may sell well in the UK once launched.
The customer satisfaction surveys back this up and I've had quite a few Toyota and Lexus cars over the last 25 years so say this based on my own experience.
The price is a bit on the high side for what it is, but there seem to be very few EV's in this class that are of a similar, or higher price.

Once we get EV car reviews which talk about using the vehicle 2 home bi-directional charging / power use.
The Car of the mid-late 2020s needs to be more than a car. It needs to have the ability to buy cheap energy at night / use excess solar power during the day to power the home and not just for driving around. Rumours were that the BZ4X would be able to have a Bi-directional OBC? Had a good chat with the Toyota Salesperson and currently not much knowledge, if any on Toyota's future plans.
Just bought a Nearly New RAV4 Hybrid as I am low mileage (under 8K) and current v2h* are in trials mainly with Nissan Leaf. The extra cost of an equivalent PHEV is currently +£10K so, is not worth it until v2h is a new car and home charging reality.
I hope in 3-5 years all new EVs will have Bidirectional OBC, so the car can work to manage home energy use and not just home journeys!

As an EV driver you should understand the STARTING price is due to retooling and development of what are either cars from a startup requiring a new factory, or established automakers having to transition, effectively "chewing their keg off" in the process, to build what have been up to now low volumes.
Not helped by the refusal, then denial, then reluctance of those established companies to change, meaning they now have to do it relatively quickly.

One theory that I've heard thrown around is that this form factor is a little bit easier to build out. They all want to come out swinging with 300 miles of range, but that means big battery pack. Crossovers make it easy to hide that battery in it's height and length. You have to really nail efficiency to build something smaller and still have that kind of range, and that kind of efficiency is hard.
