Playing Halo one time an enemy killed one of my teammates I come around the corner to my dead teammate being teabagged he did not fire at me he just kept on teabagging while looking into my eyes which pissed me off so I chucked both my grenades and started unloading at him
Michael Harrigan I'm in Europe and I study psychology. we learn that psychopaths lack of empathy etc, and that most of them aren't dangerous, they are among us, work and everything. there is 1% of psychopaths in the population, according to my lesson
Rob Chang Narcissism has its own diagnosis... Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Sometimes they overlap and each diagnosis has similarities but not all sociopaths and psychopaths have this overlap with narcissistic personality disorder. That is probably why it was left out of this video.
Sociopaths have morals (belief in something greater than yourself). In theory. But are detached from Pychopaths have goals for themselves but no overlying morals system. Both can be considered selfish but a sociopath might actually help a person even if he doesn't feel their pain
3 men get lost in the woods, They later get found by a group on cannibals, the cannibal king tells the men if they complete some tasks they will live if they fail he will eat them. "The first task is to find 10 of the same fruit" the king sends them on their way. The first man returns with 10 apples. He asks the king " so what now?" The king tells the man to shove the fruit up his own ass without any expression, 1,2 apples go in but on the 3rd he winces and so was killed, the 2nd man returns with 10 small berries, the king explains the task and the man feels confident in his choice of fruit. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 go in but on the 8th he bursts out laughing and is also killed. The 1st and 2nd man reunite in heaven, the first man is confused and asks " why did you laugh you almost got away with it?" The 2nd man replies "I saw the other guy coming with pineapples."
Hello Goodbye Especially one like that. I'm not psychopathic, nor do I show any symptoms, but I know that it doesn't make you cool and edgy, it actually causes suffering. Yeah, kids who claim to have tons of negative mental disorders really irk me. They're not tags to make you seem cooler, they are things that real people suffer with. sorry for that long response, I kinda got mad haha
Psychopaths are born, sociopaths are made. Sociopaths tend to be more impulsive, psychopathic tend to be more calculating. Psychopaths rationalize their behaviour (killing people could be putting them out of their misery), sociopaths know what they do is wrong, they just don't care, even if they have a motive. But hey, still better than no path, am I right?
Where? Where are you getting this information? I ask not just you (but you're the most recent comment) but everyone else commenting similar things. Psychopath and Sociopath aren't mental disorders and don't even exist in psychology.
I Was Right Once Well, no technically they aren't. They are described by specific disorders as opposed to the common term of psychopath and sociopath but the terms are still useful. But I am going by PsychCentral (not exclusively) who reference the DSM 5.
For someone expressing extreme behaviours, which would fall under what is here named psychopathy and sociopathy, there is the diagnosys "general antisocial behaviour disorder", which can be anything. Could be your boss, who has no problems firing you, but still cies, when he sees a dying cat in the streets. What these videos generally seem to exclude from the equation of what 'makes us us' is ideology, who is probably the major player in all human behaviour.
Why do you care? Its the same thing as saying ADHD there are other traits and mental diagnoses that contribute to being a killer. In fact the most murderers in the world are average people committing crimes of passion or premeditated murder. Most cereal killers are sociopaths who are extremely possessive and egotistical with obsessive drives. Psychopaths tend to be quite civil and charming. We follow ruels to stay out of trouble and if we do kill people it's typically to fix a problem or as a job. We prefer not to get dirty but we will do what's necessary. It a very quiet lifestyle.
exactly, sociopaths arent real at all, also sociopaths have alot of feelings also, while psycopaths cant feel anything, just look at breaking bad or the walking dead, walter white is a sociopath, rick, the governor and negan are also sociopaths
That's called human instinct, a sociopath usually doesn't give into that. They feel they simply exist to be entertained thus hate boredom. If they aren't as stimulated or talkative, they can go crazy for entertainment. I've met a lot of sociopaths in my life, real ones. I had this one guy that'd cut himself when pushed into an extremely boring position to feel entertained. They don't care about their life as much as the average person does, if they do then they're probably just a phony who's just some narcissist.
i think you've met a suicidal person and not a sociopath, sociopaths wouldn't hurt themselves because it would seem retarded to them, instead they would hurt animals or other people when bored. they care about their life a lot since a sociopath is arrogant and sees himself as a more important person than other people. the fact that you said you've met a lot of sociopaths reveals that you are wrong since it's a very rare disorder.
After studying psychology for a short time at university, I was amaze to finally realize that my oldest brother was a sociopath, bordering on psychopath. For years he tortured my parents by not giving a shit about the stress he put them under nor what it took to get what he wanted out of people through lying and manipulating them and even charming his way into a lot of women's beds. I no longer call him brother for some of his more recent actions that broke the camels back so to speak.
For ever, we tortured this planet by not giving a shit about the problems of future generations... by your OP, i'd conclude we're all psychopaths then. Also, you don't have to be anywhere related to a psychopath to lie, manipulate, or charm.... people want what they want, and will go to varying levels to obtain such.
Many young people will defy and rebel against their parents. That's completely normal. A lot of young people can go through phases of being assholes, myself included. I used to steal money from my parents and blame it on my brother. I didn't have much money at the time and it was difficult to get a job so I had no choice. Now I treat my family kindly. What do you know about whether your brother has a condition? What exactly did he do and was he actually diagnosed?
TheSm1thers I feel pity for you. Parents are the only one who raised you from baby until you are now. How come you think that’s normal? Karma will work and you’ll find your own children do just like what you did to your parents.
atrudokht Like I said I've changed since then, but the point I'm making is that you can do bad things to your family but not necessarily be a psychopath or sociopath.
people are quick to label people as sociopath or psychopath. just because you don't care about certain subject don't make you a psychopath or sociopath
This is so true, I've been scrolling down for a few mins and like 10 comments are people trashing self diagnosed people, not a single self diagnosed person yet, I guess they buried them beneath their comments lol
Just a quick Pro tip to all those "am sociopathy" 12-year-olds, you cannot be diagnosed a sociopath or psychopath till you're 18. PS: there is usually need of a diagnosis of some form of conduct disorder from the onset of 15 to be diagnosed later on.
Thanks for explaining that, but however O actually do display a lot of psychopathic tendencies so I'm trying to convince my parents to get a diagnosis for me when I come of age
+Jason Cochran A psychopath or sociopath is not inherently bad. They are often associated with murders, etc. but not nearly all of us are bad. So i would appreciate it if you could consider the above fact. Thank you.
I always heard that the psychopath was the cold conniving pleasure seeker. The sociopath would have a goal and if you got in his way he will kill without thinking, you are no more then a chair.
To me they're one in the same but the unitelligent psychopath with a bad upbringing is simply more obvious evil of the 2.. Both are capable of murder including the narcissist.
I think that the main difference is the ability to feel the empathy just that under the right circumstances the sociopath can ignore it to achieve something if they deem that it is justified to reach the goal and therefore the likelyhood of them committing massive atrocities is essentially tied to how they rationalise things.
When people self-diagnose themselves sociopaths or psychopaths just to appear edgy, special, snowflake, etc. I feel that they are not a sociopath or psychopath, I mean, you want to look like a snowflake to other people, and so you really do care about how you appear to other people, otherwise you would keep your diagnosis to yourself. And if you tell other people about your self-diagnosis and flaunt it then you probably do care about self-image and society, and so you would retain the same moral compass society has.
Oppenheimer why hide the truth? I'm a psychopath. Have been since I was dropped as a baby. It surfaced when I was 6 and I was tested for intelligence and psychological development and became a problem at 12. I was diagnosed with psycopathy and anxiety for crowds as well as mild paranoia. I hate medication because it makes it hard to think. I'm telling this to the comment section because I don't care how you feel about me. I have no criminal record and my medical ones are sealed as of 2015 call me a liar and the whole time I'll laugh knowing I dragged you into my game. Entertainment at its finest. Irony and control. The two most powerful feelings in the world.
joshua quiroz, there is no such thing as game you dragged me into. Maybe stop watching anime and read actual books on psychopathy. Whilst it is credible you have records, maybe you should have just stopped writing the last couple of sentences because now I can barely even consider you a psychopath, but some teenager obsessed with the prospect of being one.
Jaiden Jones I wouldn't call Batman a sociopath in most cases. He works outside the law, but he clearly cares about people, both the innocents he saves, and the villains he fights. I might agree if Batman just killed criminals, but he goes out of his way to prevent deaths.
SolarDragon007 only flaw in that statement is that the joker was made into what he is, he wasn't born the way he is. Other than that, that seems accurate
+Jaden Jones- Batman a sociopath?! LOL well that's a first. If he were a sociopath, he wouldn't give a shit about his parents being killed, or about going to the lengths that he does, protecting the lives of innocents. He also wouldn't have the code of ethics that he does if he were a true sociopath.
Ive studied very much into this subject, and honestly; there's VERY little difference between a sociopath and a psychopath. A psych path is really just a more extreme version of a sociopath. The only difference between the two is that psychopaths are born, sociopaths are made. Sociopaths understand feelings, but they don't feel them personally. They can "love" someone on the surface, but that love is nothing purely shallow. They love someone from the perspective of what they can DO for them. Their emotions, if you can call them that are slanted in their personal favor, and only serve their selfish, self-serving agenda. Of course sociopaths can have ethics, but their ethics are once again in accordance to what personally benefits them. Batman became who he was BECAUSE he has empathy, and a unique ability to sympathize with others. He feels extreme guilt when someone he cares about, or an innocent person is injured or killed due the fallout of either his, or his enemies actions. You must be very ignorant to the batman mythos if you really believe batman is a callous, stone cold sociopath, who just simply does what he wants for fun. "What kind of child's parents fie and leave him their fortune and he decides he wants to be a crime fighting bat"- Um wealthy parents who establish their child's trust for, or better yet; any responsible parent who cares about their child's future enough to have a will put in place.
Vladislav Dracula i just have no sense of empathy, i cant feel bad for anyone no matter how hard i try, i can laugh at almost any situation which is why i separate myself from these kinds of stuff to not offend those close to me
So psychopaths are opportunists that don't give a damn, while sociopaths are like dark knights, using methods that they are aware of but are unethical yet still get the job done?
ImCrylo Psychopath: "bad mind" born without the ability to process emotions like guilt, shame, sadness, remorse... don't connect with anybody (serial killers) Sociopath: "bad environment" raised in a dog-eat-dog world where they learned to survive by making emotional connections with some people but not others (Mafiosos)
If that is the reason your Professor gives, I would highly doubt your psych professor, who seems to exhibit a bit of paranoia and prone to believe conspiracy theories.
everybody can become a sociopath yes, after very difficult moment, you can change by becoming a sociopath, you dont born sociopath, it's your expériences who makes sociopath...
from what i've heard, in the formal/academic psychology studies, either psycho and sociopathy are treated as interchangeable terms or pyscopathy is considered an archaic terms and thus obsolete, but in common parlance (and apparantly empirical/reseach fields) they do have separate meaings, wich is curious as normally the common use tends to be the more flexible while the academic uses tend to use stricter definitions and wider vocabulary for each separate element
Nobody did. She said it without the slightest change of tone or any sort of indication as to it having an emotional weight. The entire video has the sound of teenage cackle, and not that of a "sciency" presentation. Seriously, if this is a paying job for her, she doesnt deserve a penny.
I'm neither of the two but I can tell you it really does suck to be a sibling of a sociopath. My sociopathic brother abused me mentally, emotionally and manipulated me quite often when I was younger. I remember when he was teaching me math when I was 8 he would throw spoons and forks at me if I didn't get a equation correct, god it was horrible. I remember running into the bathroom crying my little ass off and this happened frequently. He sometime manipulated my parents into not paying any bills would sweet talk my mother to no do it if he was supposed to pay something off or do a specific task or responsibility around the house. Now he's 27 years old and still lives in my house. Sure it may not be a psychopath or sociopaths fault they are born or shaped like then when they're very young but the things you have to endure and withstand if your a sibling of one is absolutely terrifying.
One of the recurring problems with such research though tends to be it heavily relies on subjects in prison. While this is useful in some ways, drawing larger conclusions tends to be problematic. It is kinda like trying to study sexual behavior by only interviewing rapists.... which we can actually see in the extreme example of pretty much every study involving pedophillia.. the only research subjects scientists have access too are rapists, and thus their results are questionable to say the least.
neeneko Now, if scientists came to Everett, WA they would have found plenty of subjects to study cause they live in adult housing, on the streets or in mental hospitals that have serious un-medicated mental problems. I know this fact, cause I lived there for 10 years and I've seen things and had married a sociopath and survived the abuse and go out. First hand accounts for that nightmare, I tell ya. I'm grateful for the studies they have to do 'safely' in prisons. Without those studies and the DMV-5 study guide, I would have never known what I had put myself into with that terrible marriage. If I hadn't studied, I would have still been in hell. Knowledge is power. Take it easy on the scientists doing their job. They can't help having to use prisons as locations for studies like this. Be grateful they don't just gather everyone off the street in droves.
Tara Dobbs I agree such studies are better than nothing, but it is important (and too often overlooked) to keep this limitation in mind when talking about representative populations, esp when conclusions are taken out of the search and discussed in the press. This dovetails in messy ways when talking about the strong stigma we already have in the US when it comes to mental illness or even non-neurotypical ness. While they mean well, researchers can play a role in how these ideas form in the public consciousness.
neeneko Yes, same can be said about entertainment media such as movies or even novels. Each of us is easily influenced how we perceive our surroundings to make our own conclusions, however, we are all social creatures we by nature we act on what the 'higher officials' (whom ever those are) to whatever they say and act just like in a herd group. It can not be avoided completely. Without the personal experiences I had with a sociopath (3 in total in my life - brother, exhusband and an now exfriend) I have found myself able to protect myself much better. I refuse to be ignorant of my surroundings with the different kinds of people and different minds that are out there. So, damn if we follow or damned if we don't. Protecting oneself and showing by example helps society in the long run. No one can get away from their nature, even in a social grouping of actions.
Tara Dobbs You say you refuse to be ignorant, but then go on to speak well of a problem of, well, ignorance. That is great that the knowledge available helped you in your particular situation, but this is not just about you, it is about millions of OTHER people too and how people treat them. Media and movies are bad, but they at least have the excuse of being entertainment. Problematic research on the other hand tries to present facts, and contains facts, which makes it doubly important to make clear lines regarding where the facts end.
neeneko Yes and education is important, but it will take time to clear out the 'bad educational tactics' in the 'system' before everyone learns well of what the truth is about humanity good and bad about all our mindsets. We are far from being civilized and that's the worst part of it all.
"OMG i'm a PSyChopAth l00k at mEee!!11!1!1!1 uwu" *cringes slightly* so, you're saying that you feel no empathy, and don't give a shit when someone is killed or hurt? honey, no.
Little Dreamer Listen, I know a lot of kids on here are just trying to be “edgy”, but there are some people on here who may actually struggle with those issues.
I know this is over a year old, but I think Breivik is a bad example for study for either psychopathy or sociopathy. I know we all think we're all super empathetic all the time, but think about your favorite action movie. How do you feel when the bad guy dies in some extreme and entertaining way? You probably cheer, or something like that. You lack empathy for that person because you felt that they deserved their fate. Whereas you probably feel sad when something happens to a protagonist. I posit this is how Breivik looks at his victims. I imagine he feels empathy in an exclusive manner. His targets weren't random. He is a white nationalist that targeted socialist youths. That's not sociopathy, that's him acting out his ideology, and I would imagine that he does feel empathy for those he sees as like him. He labeled his victims as the "other" and deemed that they deserved to die. That's not an abnormality, that's extremely common. Look at every war, for instance. Thousands of people coming together deeming the other as fit for death. Breivik felt a sense of duty to his ideology to kill those people. Not so different from how someone in the US military feels about killing their enemies. He is seen as abnormal because his ideology is fringe, whereas the ideology of someone in the military is mainstream. For the record, I'm not defending Breivik. I don't give two shits what happens to him, but I hope it's bad. I feel absolutely no empathy towards him, and that certainly doesn't make me a sociopath.
The US spends a hell of a lot of money training ordinary people to want to kill. The fact they are not natural killers explains a huge number majority of PTSD cases. A psychopath has a biological inability to care about other people except in relation to their usefulness, where a sociopath is often someone heavily socialised to the point that they see most people as things that can be moved around for strategic gain. Unlike psychopathy it's not on/off. They're not known for killing family pets when they are children, but they are able to decide that some people do not matter, and be willing to kill them, off their own initiative. What you're describing is when ideology intersects with sociopathy. There are plenty of people who look at a particular group and think "those fuckers don't deserve to live", but 98% of those people won't pick up a rifle and start shooting unless they have been heavily indoctrinated that this is the correct action, and usually then they will feel sick and have flashbacks, and be unable to cope with the guilt. It's like the difference between suicide bombers and those who send them: the bomber can be ideologically persuaded into killing a lot of people, on the promise that they will get into heaven, and importantly, they won't have to live with the consequences. All it takes for someone to be a suicide bomber is deep religious indoctrination, some strong grievance and the right encouragement. It takes something wholly different to be the kind of person who goes about choosing young boys and girls, indoctrinating them and strapping explosives to them so they can go and fulfil the missions that YOU think up. Those people are at the very least sociopaths.
Jon Laing I actually empathize with the villains a bit, because I imagine how frustrating it would be, I also rarely think of action heroes as heroes, because they don't care in any way, that they just ended hundreds of people, imagine doing your job, and then just have someone kill you
i disagree 'computers' can struggle with social perhaps vice versa, I'm yet to meet a 'bot' that embodies the gist of character these bytes are free not cheap -musedomAstdroid
This is an excellent description, and I understand perfectly about the difference. A sociopath is made, a psychopath is born .Thanks for your clarification -)
I was once told that "sociopath" is the word psychologists use simply as an updated replacement for the word "psychopath," and that there was no real differences between the two.
In think the implication maybe that Psychopaths are the ones more likely to be violent/aggressive and/or engage in criminal activity. Sociopaths are more likely to be schemers.
Here's the difference: A psychopath would kill you purely out of spite or for pleasure, and would enjoy watching the life fade from your eyes. A sociopath will, for the most part, leave you alone until you get in their way. Once you get in their way, they'll put you down like a dog and move on like nothing happened. They don't necessarily gain pleasure from inflicting pain on others, but your well-being isn't exactly very high on their list of priorities.
@@Jeffrey314159 it’s the other way around actually. psychopaths are more calculating and tend to experience no guilt or remorse, while sociopaths are typically the more explosive, less intelligent people who have *weakened* guilt and/or remorse. of course sociopaths can be smart and calm-ish too but that’s the general idea
So....what is it when someone can choose to feel empathy? I can pretty much shut my empathy off and become completely clinical and objective when I so please, yet I still know what is morally right and wrong. Then when I so choose, I can turn it back on and feel for another very strongly. I have Asperger’s, of which one of the common symptoms is supposedly problems empathizing with people. My ‘ability’ to turn off empathy is a defense mechanism I believe. If someone is feeling anger or sadness and I am not trying to be clinical, I feel that same emotion at the same intensity as the original person. Therefore, I believe that Aspies get our stereotype because rather than not empathizing enough, we empathize ‘too much.’ As a result, perhaps we have developed this defense mechanism that allows us to hide our empathy away when we don’t wish to feel everything others are feeling. Is this getting too philosophical? Hmmmm. I did just watch a bunch of quantum theory videos.
CFCtroop I wince and feel sick when I see videos like that. All I can feel is how much it must hurt, and how much I want to go help them. So, no, not all of us feel as you do.
CFCtroop Actually that kind of humor stems from an "internal affair" kind of response. Because our brains prefer to be happy over unhappy, when we see someone get hurt then realize they're okay, our brains make us laugh to prevent feeling bad over a non-threatening situation to avoid unnecessary unhappiness. However, as that has become a cultural phenomenon especially with television, we have become even less likely overtime to take others' pain seriously at least on a screen. But note how you generally don't laugh when somebody trips on the stairs in real life. Kids and adolescents might, but their brains are still developing, and I suspect that throughout development, the brain distinguishes between real life pains and "screen pains" (including in say theater).
I read once that sociopaths are capable of loyalty to people the love and care about. That was the key difference between them and psychopaths. A psychopath could kill their parents and not think much or anything of it.
I've always held that a sociopath would need high reward and low risk to commit a crime, while a psychopath sees the crime experience itself as the reward. A sociopath might consider killing you if there was a lot of money in it, and if no one would know, whereas a psychopath might kill you for whatever is in your wallet and then brag about it later at the bar.
I love how everyone is talking about special snowflakes in the comment when all I've seen are just 2 comments saying they're a sociopath or psychopath.
Just last week, I was watching the first episode of _Sherlock_ with some friends who had never seen it before. When that line about being a high-functioning sociopath, not a psychopath, came up, one of them asked what the difference was. So I love that this popped up not too long after.
This is so wrong. psychopaths, sociopaths have insanely high level of empathy. you can not manipulate someone without an ability to get outside of yourself and inside another person's mind. otherwise you will be playing blindly and end up making terrible mistakes. Getting inside the target's mind, imagining what it is like to be them is the first step to manipulation. What they lack is compassion and guilt.
+wonderfullife empathy is the ability to put yourself in another person's shoes and understand how a person feels, I could tell you how much I care and not mean a single word. but I'm not impulsive I still get thoughts of doing violent things but I don't act on it.
Sherlock is not a sociopath. The creators confirmed that he just wants to be one because caring for others allegedly gets in the way. I don't watch the show, but maybe Sherlock realized his caring for others is his strength, especially when you contrast him with Moriarity.
This is something I absolutely agree with you! He is too emotional to be one and he cares far too much. Even Moriarty knew Sherlock is not like him when he said: "You are boring, you are on the side of the angels." Means the good side. Many people seem to overheard when John mentioned the term "Asperger's?" in his conversation with Greg in ThoB. Both knew Sherlock is autistic.
So serial killers are psychopaths and mass murderers are sociopaths? I know that I am oversimplifying here a lot, but serial killers murder for pleasure and mass murderers think they punish the guilty, right?
Not exactly. Serial killers and mass murders are basically the same profile type (many victims, similar victim type, time between victims). Spree killers (theater shooter, school shooter) are a very different group of people who are looking to make a statement. Far less sadistic
Quite the opposite. Most serial killers feel a need to punish while mass murderers do their deeds to fulfill a certain desire. That's why serial killers are so calculated.
Quite the opposite. Most serial killers feel a need to punish while mass murderers do their deeds to fulfill a certain desire. That's why serial killers are so calculated.
Well, I mean the difference between a serial killer and a mass murderer is just timing. A serial killer is someone who kills several people (3-4 or more) over a long period of time, like Jeffrey Dahmer, or John Wayne Gacey. Mass murderer is someone who kills several people (3-4 or more) within a short period of time, like Anders Breivik, or Martin Bryant. So, when you think about why people become mass murderers, or serial killers, I guess yeah, more mass murderers are sociopaths, and more serial killers are psychopaths.
The Lord Sahara I don't think it is just timing. If you look at the Columbine kids or terrorists, they somehow got it in their heads that their victims somehow deserve to die and that killing them somehow makes the world a better place.
Seems like psychopaths and sociopaths have a tendency to confess their true nature in the comments of this video - and then get totally roasted by everyone. XD
+Dio Brando Your claim seems to be a bit biased. Realistically, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a disorder where individuals have impaired abilities, like social skills, verbal communication, and others. A lot of autistic people (especially ones with higher-functioning Autism or Asperger's Syndrome) tend to have an equal level of strengths and weaknesses. For example, some strengths include logical thinking, encyclopedic knowledge (especially in areas of interest), independent thinking, attention to detail, exceptional memory, and honesty. Some weaknesses include questionable emotional responses, biased view towards change, repetitive behavior, difficulty expressing or understanding certain emotions (not all), and once again, honesty. To be honest, I'd say most people that you claim to be "autiistic" aren't actually autistic at all. For one, Autistic people tend to think very logically and would probably think twice about saying ignorant or pointless things, and two, they are not usually attention-seekers and would probably not feel the need to tell others that they claim to suffer from psychopathy (since they are usually honest people, no matter how much the truth may hurt others). By the way, I recommend putting a period at the end of your sentence, it just kinda bugs me that your sentence seems to be incomplete (like a perfectionist).
Autistic spectrum disorders (especially at the high functional end) and psychopathy/sociopathy are different. An autist/aspie doesn't realize certain acts can hurt people but usually regret the hurtful act should s/he realize the harm s/he's caused. A psycho/sociopath does realize that certain acts can hurt people and either don't care or get off on causing suffering. Psycho/sociopaths only regret getting caught. This is the reason autist/aspies come across as strange while psycho/sociopaths can act normal for a while.
I've been trying to find this out for a while and quite honestly, this is the BEST explanation I've found to detail the differences between the two. Thank you so much! This really helps with my studies a ton!
What my mother was told when my father was diagnosed, at a sociopath at least 20 years ago now, is that sociopaths are unable to "put themselves in others' shoes". They're unable to think of how they would feel in a situation that someone else is in. And psychopaths are much more emotionless, but logical.
some sociopaths have tremendous amounts of empathy...but not for everyone...lol...misstreat a sociopath and they will become your very own personal psychopath..not all of us were put here to put up with peoples passive aggressive behavior, watch yourself
I know I'm not a psychopath, because I used to believe good and bad existed, and I still kinda fear some things, but I'm not a sociopath because I don't believe in good and bad. I realized late last year that we create the idea of good and bad, and those ideas can greatly differ from culture to culture. But I chose to believe that. What am I?
Most "good bad" is subjective and usually depends on where you're from. But there's definitely things that are clearly good and bad. For instance Murdering innocent people is a definite bad thing. Rescuing somebody from a burning building is a definite good. The things that are good or bad are usually obvious, mostly everything else is subjective.
Fried Keenan I might also not believe in good or bad because it's our imaginative reality although I am mostly rejecting about trivial good/bad things people saying, like "It's bad to be introvert", "It's bad to play too many videogames" but not genuinely bad stuff, that can make everyone pain. But this ethical denial of the good/bad concept in our society is not the same with the one in the video I think. Everyone feels pain, and if I watch a video of someone being tortured, even in fiction like game of thrones, I twitch, I feel uneasy, because somehow I imagine like it was my flesh that was ripped by watching it. Everyone (almost) feels physical pain and so they can relate. But the difference is that the psychopath can feel his own pain, but when he watches other people being harmed or even tortured maybe he feels nothing, he doesn't reflect other people's pain. And that's for the physical part which is universal and obvious. But I am wondering how does it reflect with the emotional pain? Because when I think about it, this one is also a matter of personality and experiences. I do feel sad when I see people that I sympathize with being treated unfairly. Because I was the shy person, introverted and bullied at school, I will immediately feel sad or angry when I see such people treated badly. I am very empathic for certain situations and people, but at the same time I feel Nothing in other situation, like seeing poor people on the street. I feel nothing, because it doesn't line up with my personality, life history and emotions, or because I have never been poor myself. And I questioned myself, "am I a bad person for not feeling anything for poor people on the street?" but then again I know I have empathy for other kinds of people. So, for me the emotional side of psychopaths or sociopaths is a bit subjective. But at least the physical part makes sense, and explains why some people torture other people, how could they ever not feel bad (and even feel good) doing that. I am still not sure though what a sociopath is. Is it someone who because of excessive believe stop thinking about people's feelings, yet he wouldn't enjoy to torture since he is not a psychopath, but wouldn't stop to think either of families if he killed someone for his purpose.
I believe what they mean by that is when something happens and everyone elses hysterical and crying the sociopath is not reacting and perhaps even more in a good mood then others around him. Others would not be able to sympathize with what he (the sociopath) is feeling at that time.
DEXTER M I know what they meant. Its easy to feel empathy as the group sees it and as a group selectively outcast some people to feel empathy for. It's much harder to feel empathy for everyone. That's what separates humans from drones or humans from sheep. I'm able to empathize with everyone, even sociopaths. Guess that's what separates the ignorant from the others.
+Yew Wood Depends on what about the sociopath you can't empathize with. If you can't empathize with his condition (assuming it is a real condition that is out of his control) then you might be faulted for lack of empathy but not sure that would itself rise to sociopathy. On the other hand, if you can't empathize with the bad things he does to others, that surely cannot make you a sociopath because you inherently care for others so why would you feel empathy for the sociopath when he's doing those things. I guess some people claim to be super Christian or empathetic here and say "hate the sin not the sinner" or "don't hate the player, hate the game." But not going for those outs would not, in my opinion, make someone a sociopath for not empathizing with sociopaths.
Yew Wood I just find it... Let's say interesting that you send and I quote "What does it mean when you can't empathise with a sociopath?" and then later that day said "I know what they ment" but now that we're all on the same page it was nice chatting with you.
Quick, simple and easy to understand answer is: One is born and one is shapen. One is a product of nature, and one is a product of society. Psychopaths are generally calm and collected, with the chaos happening in their mind. Sociopaths are wild and unpredictable, their chaos is out for all to see... It's in the name also... "psych", "socio"
More sociopaths in the big cities and more psychopaths in the country it's way it is. I hate cities. Sociopaths are mostly talk and self hype, first day at Woolworths the sociopath was "shadow boxing" a psychopath won't even let you know they can fight
This is confusing because according to wikipedia neither of the terms are used anymore, and "antisocial personality disorder" has taken their place. I would get the impression that the terms have become more- not less- interchangeable. Of course wikipedia isn't a holy grail of facts but I would imagine most editors of important psychology articles would have a fair amount of knowledge.
APD just includes the whole range of different types of predators, thats all. psychopath, apath, sociopath and narcissist are some of the widely know types of predators, but there are are more types as well. thats all
I took a class called Abnormal Psychology and my professor said that psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder are 2 different disorders that happen to be very similar; a person can be a psychopath but not have antisocial personality disorder and vice versa. Yes, the term psychopathy is regularly used by correctional psychologists and criminologists.
+Nkosi Carter-Fisher No, you're just an idiot because you failed to understand that those who winced are definitely not psychopaths which doesn't mean that those who did not, are.
I'm actually a high-functioning Sociopath myself. It comes from my Asperger's (which is a form of Autism) and a higher iq. I want to help everyone and make everyone happy, but I don't exactly achieve this in socially sensitive ways sometimes. I kind of lack facial and body expressions and my voice is somewhat monotonic, even though I do feel a lot of feeling on the inside, expressing it outwardly is difficult.
Mike Cassell Yes that is true. Most of society are either, but with training and and interaction in social situations (over time while growing up) it can be controlled. Most sociopaths and psychopaths live amongst us every day and don't murder or abuse, they keep to themselves and function in this world. Odd, I know, but look into it if you want to learn more.
Mike Cassell It has been suggested that an increase in abusive/indifferent, and generally cold and poor parenting has been increasing the number of sociopaths
cupandmouse Yes, very true and I hate watching it in action. It puts a whole new meaning to 'no one cares to educate themselves or to know what they do to the young to form them into such beings'. It breaks my heart.
Sociopaths ARE NOT EXISTING according to psychology I'm studying Psychology in Hungary (better Universitys there) atm and the most amazing thing that I have learned so far is that the so called "sociopath" isn't a thing, rather than that it is like a form of a psychopath with similar, but not identical structures. Still, it goes officially under the group of psychopaths.
As someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder I'm often told I share some traits with psychopaths/sociopaths, and after a lot of research I can definitely see how, I wouldn't say I enjoy it but seeing other people in pain has never particularly bothered me at all, and I do tend to like to get what I want.....
A psychopath or a sociopath never realises what they are or that something's wrong with them let alone them talking about it with so much calm and detail lol.
LOL it’s actually completely impossible for an autistic brain to be anything like a psychotic brain. I learned this from psychiatrists who teach psychology . However, ADHD brains were found to be very similar to a persons brain who has psychopathy
It seems like in every single comment section there's always that one kid "GUYS I LOVE THE SIGHT OF BLOOD AND VIOLENT STUFF AND I CAN WATCH PEOPLE GETTING KILLED AM I PSYCHOPATH" No, you're a psychopath. You're just edgy.
Arctic Kore no having sociopathic tendencies is actually very common. Humans are naturally selfish, narsasistic and cruel. You have to learn how to behave in society. So maybe your just to cool to be lumped with the group. The fact your singling them out proves you think your better. Something to think about we all take giant uncomfortable s hits from time to time. Helps us remember we're all equal.
I did but something doesn't feel right. Seriously I do think I was autistic as a child, would not actually be diagnosed with the disorder but very close. Both sociopath and autism show difficulty in emotional connection but is different if you look deeper.
Not To Sound Annoying But: I’ve done my research on symptoms on being a Psychopath and/or a Sociopath. I’ve self-diagnosed myself as a Psychopath. When I’m older I’ll got check it out at a psychiatrist or some one to see if I am a Psychopath.
Thank you - I found this far more concrete than many other discussions on the same topic. Aside from the nature vs. nurture aspect, your commentary that: - sociopaths know right/wrong but their moral compass might be off the mark - psychopaths seek rewards more strongly than most people because of dopamine production is extremely helpful and clarifying. Thank you.
Kayleb Nickolson that’s not a gender, hermadaphodites or whatever it’s called isn’t a gender, only one genitalia works, it’s just a common mos belief that it’s a third gender
What you're referring to is sex, aka the anatomy of a person's reproductive organs. Gender is how a person identifies, which lies on a spectrum. There are individuals who will carry XX (female) chromosomes and have only male genitalia. This can be caused by an excess exposure to testosterone during fetal development, which causes the clitoris to grow into a penis and the labia to fuse together. This is typical male development, with the only difference being the chromosome. The vice versa can happen as well, where someone will carry XY (male) chromosomes and have female genitalia. So, not every person who is intersex has both genitalia with only "one that works." Your idea that intersex is invalid is actually the common misbelief.
Well you have males, females, and transgenders, idk if they really count since they're still technically either a male or female, idfk or even care for that matter I just Ed wanted a say in this whole debate
Danny Giuliano actually not true because on many applications or questionnaires they sometimes would ask "what gender do you identify yourself as?" And based off of your logic that doesn't make since, and my evidence sure as hell is lacking but hey like I already said I just wanted to have a say in this
@@Noa...... Yes. But the writers clearly don't know the difference. One scene that sticks out like a sore thumb is when Harry and Dexter look at brainscans and Harry says Dexter's brain is identical to a *criminal psychopath* brain.. That's extremely poor research right there! Then you have dr Vogel in the last season who's supposedly an "expert" on the subject. An expert who mixes up the terms psychopath and sociopath in every other sentence..
Rich Homie Michael That's only because the person is ultimately ok. If it was serious, like if the person broke an arm and was screaming, normal people wouldn't laugh.
A psycho/sociopath doesn't want people to know that he is one, he is the opposite of the people here in the comment section. He constantly puts on a mask in public and mimic a learned, studied empathetic behavior to make people really think that he does care about others, he want's people to think that he is a caring person to fit in. They literally don't want anyone to know this, not even their closest friends. Because then everyone would basically isolate that person. It's not gaining. And they're masters at this, so it's really difficult to spot one. And to all the cringe self diagnosing kids who wants to be one, basically everyone have some socio/psychopathic traits to some degree, so stop feeling special. YOU are NOT a psychopath. Just because you sometimes lie, manipulate and have a lack of empathy doesn't mean that you have ASPD, because guess what: It's just basic, normal human behavior.

Michael Harrigan I'm in Europe and I study psychology. we learn that psychopaths lack of empathy etc, and that most of them aren't dangerous, they are among us, work and everything. there is 1% of psychopaths in the population, according to my lesson
In discussing sociopaths and psychopaths, it's important to also include narcissists, because there are a lot of overlaps in their behavior/mentality.
Rob Chang I agree I think narcissists and sociopaths are very similar
Yes, of course. But the majority of all sociopaths are probably not narcissistic, but most narcissists are most likely also sociopaths.
Rob Chang Narcissism has its own diagnosis... Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Sometimes they overlap and each diagnosis has similarities but not all sociopaths and psychopaths have this overlap with narcissistic personality disorder. That is probably why it was left out of this video.
Rob Chang Also machiavellianism. People jump to the conclusion that if someone is manipulative, they're a socio/psychopath.
Sociopaths have morals (belief in something greater than yourself). In theory. But are detached from Pychopaths have goals for themselves but no overlying morals system. Both can be considered selfish but a sociopath might actually help a person even if he doesn't feel their pain
3 men get lost in the woods,
They later get found by a group on cannibals, the cannibal king tells the men if they complete some tasks they will live if they fail he will eat them.
The 1st and 2nd man reunite in heaven, the first man is confused and asks " why did you laugh you almost got away with it?"
The 2nd man replies "I saw the other guy coming with pineapples."

@LG I was sure he is a sociopath. But on the other hand I am no Psychologist so...
Actually they both know they're doing wrong.
I Was Right Once
Well, no technically they aren't.

I say were all a bit crazy, when you get pushed to the brink you'll find out who you are.
Speak for yourself. I'm sane.
Deep. And very true.
TacoTruck not all sociopaths and psychopaths hurt animals but most of them do because they are prone to boredom and lack empathy.

I no longer call him brother for some of his more recent actions that broke the camels back so to speak.
gutz1981 If he can't show empathy to his parents, then he is a psychopath.

+stubee52 I don't need you to tell what I already know
To me they're one in the same but the unitelligent psychopath with a bad upbringing is simply more obvious evil of the 2..
This is just one view of psychopathy/sociopathy. It's actually more complicated than that.
Then elaborate please
No shit Sherlock

When people self-diagnose themselves sociopaths or psychopaths just to appear edgy, special, snowflake, etc. I feel that they are not a sociopath or psychopath, I mean, you want to look like a snowflake to other people, and so you really do care about how you appear to other people, otherwise you would keep your diagnosis to yourself. And if you tell other people about your self-diagnosis and flaunt it then you probably do care about self-image and society, and so you would retain the same moral compass society has.
GodOfInsomniacs lmao that was not the point of the comment learn to comprehend writing lol
Sociopath: Ra's al ghul
Psychopath: The Joker
Jaiden Jones I wouldn't call Batman a sociopath in most cases. He works outside the law, but he clearly cares about people, both the innocents he saves, and the villains he fights. I might agree if Batman just killed criminals, but he goes out of his way to prevent deaths.
TheBobBrom I like to ignore that Batman entirely because he is so against everything that the character is supposed to stand for.
"What kind of child's parents fie and leave him their fortune and he decides he wants to be a crime fighting bat"- Um wealthy parents who establish their child's trust for, or better yet; any responsible parent who cares about their child's future enough to have a will put in place.

everybody can become a sociopath yes, after very difficult moment, you can change by becoming a sociopath, you dont born sociopath, it's your expériences who makes sociopath...
from what i've heard, in the formal/academic psychology studies, either psycho and sociopathy are treated as interchangeable terms or pyscopathy is considered an archaic terms and thus obsolete, but in common parlance (and apparantly empirical/reseach fields) they do have separate meaings, wich is curious as normally the common use tends to be the more flexible while the academic uses tend to use stricter definitions and wider vocabulary for each separate element

I’m so sorry you’ve endured that!
We are far from being civilized and that's the worst part of it all.

that would be both a sociopath, and a psychopath.

I feel absolutely no empathy towards him, and that certainly doesn't make me a sociopath.
i think i saw him in an interview where he said that it was a hard thing to do and that he didnt like watching them die or something along those lines

JoJo The Canadian um, hi?
@@Jeffrey314159 it’s the other way around actually. psychopaths are more calculating and tend to experience no guilt or remorse, while sociopaths are typically the more explosive, less intelligent people who have *weakened* guilt and/or remorse. of course sociopaths can be smart and calm-ish too but that’s the general idea
there is a huge difference..i assure you..i am a highly highly functioning sociopath...
@@tmak4699 You are Sherlock
I feel the same way, I'm just like you
interesting
Don't we all get pleasure from seeing people get hurt? Like that's why we watch funny fail videos.
CFCtroop I wince and feel sick when I see videos like that. All I can feel is how much it must hurt, and how much I want to go help them. So, no, not all of us feel as you do.
K Money reading comments and seeing this made me laugh
It's so sad that caring about others is seen as weakness.
Michael Pappano I'm on your side on this! I hate seeing other people getting hurt like that

I read once that sociopaths are capable of loyalty to people the love and care about. That was the key difference between them and psychopaths. A psychopath could kill their parents and not think much or anything of it.
So basically there like a messed up character in a romance book? Lol
What they lack is compassion and guilt.
stupid
+Marquis barr ok show me how you can manipulate without understanding your victim ?? paychopaths have cold empathy
you're talking to a diagnosed psychopath right now
Xavier made IT can you make it clear about empathy thing ?? if you are a psychopath
+wonderfullife empathy is the ability to put yourself in another person's shoes and understand how a person feels, I could tell you how much I care and not mean a single word. but I'm not impulsive I still get thoughts of doing violent things but I don't act on it.
Everyone in the comment section wants to be a psychopath so bad
The Lord Sahara
I don't think it is just timing.

Blah blah blah. She's not even explaining the real contrast of anything, just bringing up reserch journals and filler.
Well, it's not the first case.
Sherlock is not a psycopath.
(I thought the comments would be filled with SHERLOCKK but it wasn't so I thought, " * why not?* ")
I'M NOT A PSYCOPATH I'M A HIGH-FUNTIONING SOCIOPATH
I've been trying to find this out for a while and quite honestly, this is the BEST explanation I've found to detail the differences between the two. Thank you so much! This really helps with my studies a ton!
its a big difference!
If someone is happy or sad to be a psychopath then you can be sure he is not a psychopath.
What my mother was told when my father was diagnosed, at a sociopath at least 20 years ago now, is that sociopaths are unable to "put themselves in others' shoes". They're unable to think of how they would feel in a situation that someone else is in. And psychopaths are much more emotionless, but logical.
so sociopath just dont have Fucks to give?
soshiopath
I think I am the opposite of both of these. Im an empath. I feel too much. I care too much. Which isn't so great sometimes either 😭
It can be controled, but I don't prefer doing it, cuz it can lead to depression
I am too, but you are a target for narcissist 😢
A psycho would tell you the same thing🫢
some sociopaths have tremendous amounts of empathy...but not for everyone...lol...misstreat a sociopath and they will become your very own personal psychopath..not all of us were put here to put up with peoples passive aggressive behavior, watch yourself
Thanks for making this 3 minutes. I really didn’t want to watch a twenty minute video for a simple question
What am I?
Fried Keenan A free man.. You've a free man... But considered one of these (Phsycopath/Sociopath) To many.... But you are a free man....
Fried Keenan dunno.....a Buddhist (particularly Vajrayana)?
Fried Keenan You are a Cultural Relativist.
My surgeon is distant and emotionless. . . good for me. Which is psychopathic yet benefiting
Most are good but are known for the bad. Facts.
What does it mean when you can't empathize with a sociopath? Kind of makes you a sociopath yourself?
I guess some people claim to be super Christian or empathetic here and say "hate the sin not the sinner" or "don't hate the player, hate the game." But not going for those outs would not, in my opinion, make someone a sociopath for not empathizing with sociopaths.
innertubez All conditions are real experiences whether they are real or imagined conditions.
Yew Wood I just find it... Let's say interesting that you send and I quote "What does it mean when you can't empathise with a sociopath?" and then later that day said "I know what they ment" but now that we're all on the same page it was nice chatting with you.
Quick, simple and easy to understand answer is:
One is born and one is shapen.
Sociopaths are mostly talk and self hype, first day at Woolworths the sociopath was "shadow boxing" a psychopath won't even let you know they can fight
is there a term for mentally healthy people who do harm to others?

This is confusing because according to wikipedia neither of the terms are used anymore, and "antisocial personality disorder" has taken their place. I would get the impression that the terms have become more- not less- interchangeable. Of course wikipedia isn't a holy grail of facts but I would imagine most editors of important psychology articles would have a fair amount of knowledge.
APD just includes the whole range of different types of predators, thats all. psychopath, apath, sociopath and narcissist are some of the widely know types of predators, but there are are more types as well. thats all
Thanks, although narcissists aren't necessarily predators... although they are often manipulative and lack empathy.
you just described a type of predator...

Not only the difference between them is nature and nurture but also sociopath has more anger issues and impulsive rage than psychos
Have you tried telling people you are an android prototype and not yet fully up to date on human social protocols? Using big words might help.

+Random User how so? :/
Sociopaths are more common than psychopaths, right? I heard somewhere that one out of twenty five people is a sociopath.
Mike Cassell Psychopaths are born and sociopaths are made, obviously the environment has more influence than an accident that happens to newborns.
***** Interesting
Sociopaths ARE NOT EXISTING according to psychology
I'm studying Psychology in Hungary (better Universitys there) atm and the most amazing thing that I have learned so far is that the so called "sociopath" isn't a thing, rather than that it is like a form of a psychopath with similar, but not identical structures. Still, it goes officially under the group of psychopaths.
“If you just winced at that you’re probably not a psychopath”

As someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder I'm often told I share some traits with psychopaths/sociopaths, and after a lot of research I can definitely see how, I wouldn't say I enjoy it but seeing other people in pain has never particularly bothered me at all, and I do tend to like to get what I want.....
Everyone like to get what they want, the problem is HOW you get what you want
A psychopath or a sociopath never realises what they are or that something's wrong with them let alone them talking about it with so much calm and detail lol.
LOL it’s actually completely impossible for an autistic brain to be anything like a psychotic brain. I learned this from psychiatrists who teach psychology . However, ADHD brains were found to be very similar to a persons brain who has psychopathy

Is it just me or did anyone else tick all the boxes for being a sociopath but keeps reminding themselves that they're perfectly normal
Both sociopath and autism show difficulty in emotional connection but is different if you look deeper.
im voting cuz i learn alot from this channel

luvyou baby It's like school, but actually bearable and interesting.

Not To Sound Annoying But:
I’ve done my research on symptoms on being a Psychopath and/or a Sociopath. I’ve self-diagnosed myself as a Psychopath. When I’m older I’ll got check it out at a psychiatrist or some one to see if I am a Psychopath.
DO NOT SELF-DIAGNOSE!
Julia you should apply for a role in Agent Carter. You totally have the looks! ^_^
Hillary Clinton and Hillary Clinton

And donald trump. He seems completely indifferent when it comes to lying to millions. In fact, lets just put all politicians to avoid argument
Luke Hagopian Hillary is a sociopath, and then Hilary is a psychopath.
And then there's Trump, the narcissist. You forgot to put him in your comment.
Luke Hagopian Donald Trump and Donald Trump
Thank you - I found this far more concrete than many other discussions on the same topic.
Aside from the nature vs. nurture aspect, your commentary that:
- sociopaths know right/wrong but their moral compass might be off the mark
- psychopaths seek rewards more strongly than most people because of dopamine production
is extremely helpful and clarifying. Thank you.
One cannot feel another’s, the other can but chooses not to.
Lipstick is on point.
“Spread the love of science”
says there’s more than 2 genders
Bruh
Erich Durst well u can be born with both or neither genitalia and be the technical third gender
Danny Giuliano actually not true because on many applications or questionnaires they sometimes would ask "what gender do you identify yourself as?" And based off of your logic that doesn't make since, and my evidence sure as hell is lacking but hey like I already said I just wanted to have a say in this
Dexter Morgan
ma403 YEA DEXTER FANS
Dexter Morgan himself was manipulated into being a serial killer, as seen in season 8. Thus, he's clearly a sociopath.
@@Stigmatix666 Obviously. It was already established in the show that he is a sociopath. Both implied and mentioned directly.
@@Noa......
The only reason I search videos like this is to understand more about myself and this sickness
I'm not a psychopath nor a sociopath. 😊 But thanks for the informative video.
You know, we Don't
I mean who doesn't like to see someone in pain, I mean like tripping & falling stubbing your toe etc., ya know the norm?
Rich Homie Michael I'm more of the type seeing people burn alive, but shhh, don't tell anyone.
LegendMeadow
Well that's impossible now because you've made it public yourself. Luv you* smooch*
Rich Homie Michael That's only because the person is ultimately ok. If it was serious, like if the person broke an arm and was screaming, normal people wouldn't laugh.
Rich Homie Michael I always laughed at Rob Petrie tripping and falling in his living room.
Draikofi
I now understand
Thank you! The only intelligent and true comment in this section
I didn't do anything but smile when she mentioned the car door I'm a phsycopath
