    A minor correction: you mention that FoxDie is causing Snake to age. This isn't the case, he's actually aging because as he's a clone, they reduced his natural lifespan genetically when they created him during The Les Enfants Terrible project, so he's just aging faster because he was made that way. The other clones (Liquid, Solidus) didn't live long enough to see the effects themselves.

    • @Kono_Dio-Da
      @Kono_Dio-Da 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1019

      Actually, Solidus did live long enough to see the effects. He's the youngest of the Big Boss clones, but he's also the only truly perfect clone, which is why he looks so old in MGS2.
      Also, the Terminator Cells in his body is what's causing the aging if I'm not mistaken

    • @TheBaalPhaoton

      @@wullahblack6452 Having preproduction titles in the pipeline is perfectly normal (no studio can run successfully without these) and PT seemed promising and for sure wasn't actually expensive, it is after all not a full fledged game, just a concept demo. It stands to reason that he knew shit's going down and did it for this reason, one does not just run a whole studio on a single project.
      There's also only a small overlap between pre-production and production teams, since pre-production programming can be all manner of terrible and generally is, models, textures and animation are also very rough in comparison to the release standards and take 10+ times less effort, and concept artists are the core of it but their work is largely done when the work goes into full production; but you don't just get rid of the concept team, or you aren't going to have the next project EVER, so you have to keep them occupied.

    The funny thing about the start of the game is, they actually had to cut out another 20 minute cutscene flashback and put it in the menu under the title of "mission briefing". That's just how extra this game got with the exposition dumps

    • @yewtewbstew547
      @yewtewbstew547 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Yeah that was a bit odd. I think it was the right decision from pacing standpoint though, because iirc that mission 1 briefing covers a lot of information and involves some characters that feel more naturally introduced through cutscenes in mission 1. Like I think the scene in the graveyard with Otacon, and where Snake meets Campbell on the helicopter, is a better introduction than just cutting to them on the nomad. And then Meryl gives you the deets on Ocelot when you meet up with her.
      I think the best way to play it is to just completely finish mission 1, and then go back and watch the mission 1 briefing afterwards. iirc it doesn't even unlock until after you've started mission 1 and saved the game, so I suspect that's what the developers probably intended people to do.

    I've said it once I'll say it again. MGS4 has the BEST idea for a sneaking game I've ever seen. Full body camo with a suit that blends into whatever you press against. Seriously the amount of missed potential for that in this game was staggering. It's a shame too once you get the mask so you can do the whole full body camo thing the game becomes one set piece after the next with very little actual sneaking and more action set pieces. I love this game but damn man, I wanted SO much more out of the sneaking gameplay.

    • @yewtewbstew547
      @yewtewbstew547 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Yeah I completely agree, the octocamo is probably the coolest gadget in a stealth game ever. It basically takes everything fun about the idea of being invisible, but then adds a bunch of limitations that prevent it from being overpowered to the point of boredom. It is genius.
      As you say though it's just a shame that to really enjoy the gameplay in MGS4 you pretty much have to deliberately piss around in the levels for a bit before moving to your objective (and next 20+ minute cutscene), otherwise you only get like 2-3 hours of actual sneaking gameplay in an entire playthrough. Which is obviously not great. It is a fantastic game, but definitely flawed.
      What it really needed imo was another gameplay heavy chapter of a similar design to chapters 1 and 2. It would still be very set piece and cutscene heavy but at least if you had one more chapter like that, maybe nearer the end of the game, it would alleviate that a little bit.

      Agree with everything, all the good and the wasted potential. Mgs4 is on my short list of games i badly want remade but like recoonceptualized entirely. I genuinely think this game needed more horsepower, a revised story, and imo a wide linear type design, The initial reveal and interviews suggested more time in the middle east and an actual ability to traverse through a war torn city, using the octocamo as the new paradigm for sneaking with a 'no place to hide' environment. The game shows these flashes of brilliance, and also was good through sheer effort, like shadow moses and the liquid ocleot tekken style fight were great , crawling through the microwaves etc, was great. But the game as a stealth game, it s didn't spend enough time wit this, and the environments i wish were bigger (not open world, as i say wide linear).

It was surreal and like the character wasn't just talking about the character of Snake, but gaming as a whole.

      There is. If I remember right, there's was a promotional video for MGS4 that looked like Altiar sneaking through a crowd and the reveal at the end was Old Snake. That scene with Fisher as well, he says (to this effect) "I'm the last one left," except his tone and expression isn't bragging; he feels a loss knowing this.

      The Leap of Faith was in Peace Walker IIRC, and let you acquire a cardboard box made out of hay that would let you take down enemies inside of it (heh) at the cost of a little bit of its durability. MGS4 only had the Altair costume acquired through getting an endgame ranking that required you to use cqc and slit enemy throats, or just entering a password at the menu.

      @@Kinos141 The genre is practically dead. The obsession with "open worlds" is a major reason for it. MGS and Splinter Cell used to be about clever level/environment design where you were forced to use your brain a bit to get around obstacles like enemy guards, the fact they were linear and in closed worlds is what made them a consistent challenge and kept the pacing on track. MGSV being "open world" (and not even a good one, they wasted so much money and time creating those shitty barren and lifeless deserts/jungles - they could've made an excellent linear stealth game instead, with the same mechanics, whoever wanted to drive a jeep or ride a horse in an MGS game??) is one reason why it's so shit and you can bet any future Splinter Cell release will go the same way, as Ubisoft has a penchant for making shit "open world" games as well.

The way you had to either avoid them at all cost or isolate one and shoot their legs to make them fall and then unload into their heads...brilliantly designed in terms of gameplay. And once you got the Railgun or Anti-Materiel Rifle you could just kill them with one well placed shot.
    They also look cool and unique, move around elegantly and the way they sound like cows is weirdly cool aswell especially when you hear them from a distance and they leap over the horizon towards you...

And all the memories, the highs and lows, and the literal years of personal investment between 1 and 4's releases finally culminate in an appropriately grandiose final confrontation, in which even the HUD and BGM make you relive the journey one final time.

      @@wullahblack6452 The main reason why MGS4 will probably never get a remastered release on newer consoles/PC is because it was developed from the ground up exclusively for the PS3's hardware like the cell processor, etc. One of the reasons the Xbox 360 was the 'lead' console for that generation was because the PS3 was more difficult to develop games on and it's why so many cross-platform games were inferior on the PS3, it only picked up steam later on that generation.
      They'd basically have to remake MGS4 and that'd cost too much money. They'd be better off just making a whole new MGS game or remaking one of the older MGS games that would benefit much more from modern graphics and gameplay mechanics.

The Joy (the Boss) and Decoy Octpus making up Laughing Octopus, The Fury and Raven making up Raging Raven (and the harrier fight as you mentioned), the Sorrow and Sniper Wolf making up Crying Wolf (followed by yet another scene of Otocon losing a love of his), and the Fear and Psycho Mantis making up Screaming Mantis made for an excellent method of nostalgic gameplay without necessarily revisiting those characters except for Mantis showing up with a cameo from Hideo’s voice as “god”.

    I loved MGS 4 and it's my second favourite after MGS 3, but I do agree that there was a ton of missed potential with how much thought was put into the stealth mechanics, with not enough gameplay to explore these mechanics with. The Solar gun was about the only thing that made that sequence tolerable, though I found out later that the auto-targeting feature supposedly makes that part much more manageable.

    38:51 this point and the final fight made me cry my heart out 😭. This will always be one of my favorite games groing up.
    Thank you Kojima.

    For those who’ve actually played the game, initially it feels like a *Glorious Mess* but once you get absorbed into the game, you’ll quickly realize that the game what you presumed to be a Mess is actually the MASTERPIECE.
