"Kojima seems like a smart guy" while showing the picture of his "Egg." tweet had me dying. So many brilliant edits and quick cutaways in this. Love this video.
It's difficult to put into words exactly what changed with the wider evaluation of the series, but even if you really really love this video, it's hard to deny that video essays about the memes of Japanese games changed after it came out.
@@expunkstep7226 we cant know how youtube magic works exactly but i watched this video short time after it came out, it was around 50k views i think. I thought holy shit, three hours, who would watch this, before watching it lol. Point is after this i saw this multi hour essays published, and watched by millions. Probably its not like steak invented it but it might be a perfect storm moment.
The music during Occelot’s GUNS OFTHE PATRIOTS!! BANG! BANG! HAHAHA DIE! hit every dramatic beat with every riff and chord change… It was perfectly synced with the visuals!
i last played mgs4 like 10 years ago so this video has been a major trip down memory lane and seeing that scene again set to that music was just. amazing. that was already probably my favorite scene in MGS4 simply for the sheer coolness of it
i’ve never heard of Protomen before watching this video, but the song was used so well for the Guns of Patriots scene and i fucking love that song now 😂
What I gleaned from this is that MGS 4 was just one of those "last in the season" episodes of show where they bring back all the characters from the first season for literally no reason, but on a larger scale
1:39:02 THIS SEGMENT. What a masterpiece of a moment and how it perfectly fits the mayhem and absurdity of the whole scene. This song has become one of my all time favorites just by association with this madness ^^
Agreed! I was muttering "whatever" for hours up to this point in the game, but this scene brought me back on board. 'Oh! Ocelot isn't Liquid, he's a Solidus proxy. With STYLE!'
God, can you imagine how powerful it would have been if Foxalive turned off all nano machines and THAT’S what killed Naomi instead? If Naomi went into this mission KNOWING she would be destroying the only thing keeping her alive and went through with it anyway for the greater good of the world and the next generation, and the kind of thematic moral sacrifice that would represent in tandem with the original ending where snake dies? Or even if turning off the nano machines was somehow the thing that killed the dangerous foxdie in Snake so that Naomi’s sacrifice ALSO saved Snake’s life along with the lives and freedom and personal identities of everyone else?
Comments like this and a few others I’ve seen that offer alternative directions for characters to have been taken in make me wish someone would undertake trying to rewrite this games story, taking these ideas into account
No, just have her kill herself in the stupidest way imaginable in the MGS universe for the sake of poetry (making Otacon cry over a dead woman he loved for the third time).

It's clickbaity and reads more negatively than I actually feel about the game, but the video was basically written with that title in mind from the beginning. As I state in the video, the experience of playing through and writing about the game warmed me up to it. With that, to me, the meaning of the title evolved too. I probably won't change it and I can't think of a better one anyway :v •Trans rights •I made this video because I wanted to •It's that long because I wanted it to be that long •I don't know if I'll make more •If I do I'll try to make them good •Mistakes are valuable too •Aim for the top •Drink water •I love ya

"You would be excused for thinking that this is the last time Drebin shows up" He has a monkey, a coin, a catchphrase and does magic tricks. Of course Kojima would keep him around for the entire game
@@itihaas6557 Or three and a half hours of analysis managed to go completely over your head, that is if you even bothered to watch the video in the first place.
In 2016, I was at an anime convention where Khary Payton, Drebin's VA, was attending as one of the guests. Lo and behold, he's there selling autographed Drebin photos and I just had to ask him what the hell was up with the B&B Corps backstory part in the script. From his perspective the script reading and acting was really well done and he was enthusiastic about what he was saying and referencing. Then...Laughing Octopus' lines appeared. And midway through a take, he stops and asks "What the hell is this? What am I reading? This a joke?" Nope. Was straight from Kojima himself. "How the hell does this character suddenly know this? Why does he know this? Why is this important to the player?" He was told yet again, from Kojima himself. Read the lines and ignore it. Did his job wonderfully, but years later at that con, the baffled look on his face sticks with me whenever I play, or watch reviews of MGS4.
that makes the situation even funnier. even as a kid I had no idea why suddenly I (or Snake to be exact) needed a background exposition on the boss I just killed. every other game in the franchise knew how to naturally insert characters backstory (especially if you're on the "bad" side), so knowing the VA himself couldn't take this seriously is beyond funny. ps his monkey and raiden share the same mo cap actor, and that's a backstory I would rather like know than any of the B&B's
Sometimes actors don't know what they're getting into as Peter Weller is still baffled by Buckaroo Banzai. As for Payton, I'd have enjoyed hearing about his time on Deus Ex.
if they let us save the B&B units, and let snake or rose rehabilitate them that would be interesting. Having them killed off makes them as forgettable as the FROGS.
It would have been difficult to implement with any depth, since you can kill or save each B&B as they appear. If devs wanted them to have a conversation with the player or with each other, to talk and interact with other characters during cutscenes, or to appear at different points in the game to assist you, there are potentially 14 combinations or more depending on how a developer writes them (e.g 'nanomachines turn their mind into a single unit'). e.g if x = a B&B you killed, and 1,2,3,4 are each member of the B&B Unit, then combos look like: xxxx (all killed) 1234 (all saved) 1xxx x2xx xx3x xxx4 12xx 1x3x 1xx4 x2xx x23x x2x4 xx3x xx34
RockyPixel Hey, I ain't complaining There are the *EMBERS* of a fire that's gone *OUT* BUT I CAN STILL FEEL THE HEAT ON MY SKIN, THIS MESS THAT WE'RE IN, YOU AND I
That scene (you know which one, BANG) will never be the same in my eyes again. I used to think it was hilarious and baffling, mostly stupid, with the highlight of unironic cool being Ocelot. Now, Eva protecting Solidus and Snake getting burned protecting her, and that entire final 45 second or so stretch of cuts and shots at the end are the most incredible, epic shit I've ever seen. The music really kind of highlights Kojima's love for cinematic setpieces that ramp up in tension and end in a feverish climax (also see the scene of Sam and Igor's disastrous and terrifying corpse disposal gig, early in Death Stranding, which I would actually say is one of Kojima's most well-directed and artistically unique scenes he's ever done. I also haven't finished DS yet so no spoilers pls)

You mentioning your perspective on the ending changing with your friend taking their own life really resonated with me, I had my perspective on it change as I grew older too. I played this game when I was a kid, and as a kid I always thought it should have ended with Snake killing himself, and I felt the fake out with Big Boss coming in to explain everything ruined the tone on an ending I overall enjoyed. Shortly after I graduated college my dad died and I essentially was thrown into adulthood without him to help me figure things out. Over the years I feel like I found my way and being a few years into a graduate program, I can't help but think about how I still don't know what I need to be doing and longing for him to be here just for reassurance. My relationship with my dad was complicated, we loved each other but as is in your early adulthood you argue about stuff that really doesn't matter, but you take it personally because you just don't have the same perspective as each other. Replaying this game and well, watching this video again (I know I'm not the only one who watches this at least once a year) I thought about what Kojima said in that interview, and how all Big Boss is doing is just really coming in and telling Snake how things are going to be okay. Hearing you go over Kojima's interview about losing his father at a young age, and how the ending is exactly that, just him having his dad tell him that he respects him as a man, just made me kind of go "Yeah, I get it". Anyways, great video, it's definitely one of the best on the platform
I wish raidens ending was more realistic. All the pain she put him through I think it would have been much better if he would have retorted with a “I’ll be here for him, not you” kind of thing. Cuz your right she’s gaslighting the shit out of him
@@hishkapish4817 they seem like they have a decent relationship, but obviously they can't be together for a while and Raiden has no qualms with flirting with Courtney (which I really can't blame him for, especially after all the crap he went through because of Rose)
But was Raiden that innocent? I mean, you blame Rose but her actions were justifiable. It was his decision at the first place to drown his sorrow, and pain in alcohol instead of taking therapy and fight with his past like a man.
@@TheKrowkaBoo he's obviously not, but between him and Rose, Raiden is ultimately the victim, and the whole "fake marriage, fake miscarriage" thing wasn't the first time Rose fucked him over, considering she entered his life at all with the intent to spy on him for the Patriots
>Gets on motorcycle >Tells her own clone son Snake to hang onto her waist >Starts motorcycle >Meditates for a full 8 seconds >Gives a big fuck off 3 minute speech while basically being spooned by her 76 year old son
@Travis Brink yes but didn't he grow inside her womb and wasn't he birthed by her like a son? I mean he's more her son than big boss's since he's just a clone of him but was actually birthed by her. Idk
Imagine you are preparing for perhaps your final act, and you are confronted by your inner self's desire to resolve unfinished business. Not everything has to act out as if it is scripted xD
There's a beautiful symmetry between Raiden in Rising and Gray Fox. I know it's tragic to see a character whose been through as much as Raiden turn back to violence. But Gray Fox's words sum up his motivation "Fighting was the only thing I was good at. But at least I faught for what I believed in." That's exactly Raiden in Rising. He's fighting for a better future so children don't have to go through the same thing as him.
And the best part is he succeeds, arguably he deals an even bigger blow to the military industrial complex than even Solid Snake when he erased the patriots. He also manages to use the wisdom Snake imparted onto him to simply not just throw his life away, he is putting his life on the line in combat, but now he does it knowing he has a home and a family to go back to, and that is just delicious.
@@Roler42 This is also something unique to him as a _Metal Gear_ protagonist; Raiden is the only protagonist that has a family and home he can reliably go to and be safe and at peace, something not even Solid Snake offered himself as he continued to travel the world to stop Metal Gears with Otacon and eventually Sunny. Despite embracing his violent past and partaking in brutal military combat, he’s finally at peace with himself and the world that made him.
“Then snake falls out Rex and starts screaming and starts yelling because he’s the dumbest man alive.” Is a quote that perfectly captures what makes this video so special somehow being so ernest, funny, bonkers, and beautiful while juggling all of that with some of the most amazing analysis I’ve ever heard. Please keep making content! You're really fantastic at it!
Hilarious that what he tries to get us to realize about Kojima's desire for the game. Metal Gear as a story (at the time of this game) was already beating a dead horse. It's over. It's okay that it's over. All good things come to an end. And they should end. The creator would be doing the same thing the game and Kojima himself is criticizing us for. We don't need to pour hours and hours over every little detail over all the games. I imagine he would love the recognition (deserved) for the quality and more views on his videos and more money blah blah blah. But that might not be the reason he made this video. It's much more poignant this way.
I know this video is, like, two years old by this point, but it has legitimately been a massive aid in helping me keep my sanity during a rough, messy breakup period. Corny as it is to admit it, it's helped a lot, even if I've watched it like six or seven times by now. Good lad, Steak.
@Joshua Dobson I discovered them when they released ACT II - Loved what they were doing with that retro 80s style and the themes of heroism. Still one of my favorites to listen to.
I’ve never played Metal Gear, but you’ve made me feel like I grew up alongside each character, then you stabbed them to death and pointed out how bad it all was, but also how it shouldn’t work, but does work, and I can’t tell what to think about the game, but I’ve been filled with new vigor to work on my art. Because if a game this big, this bad, and this hated can be simultaneously awesome and loved, maybe I have a chance out there.
Same, I've just finished this video and watching it over the weekend has really pumped me up creatively again out of a confidence slump. Seeing an artist or creative, especially one like Kojima, take such big swings and have so many ideas over half a dozen works created over a decade is just inspiring. Even if they don't all land, looking over the Metal Gear series always makes me feel a sense of wow.

Nothing, my dude, that game was actually trashy fun and not up its own ass, murdering its own narrative. Fans of the series will boast about how the series made daring changes between iterations, but then when they find themselves perturbed at one of those 'daring changes' it's suddenly a bridge too far and Metal Gear is NO LONGER best when it's actively trying to not be Metal Gear. I find it so difficult to take the "NOT MY METAL GEAR!" crowd seriously. They're right though - it's not theirs and it never was, it's understandable they'd be upset at finally realizing it. Steak is good for all types of bribing though. That's why we don't use it as currency.

Ceceli 100% agree, a MGSV video would require a backpack of cocaine and a mile of conspiracy string just to get a glimpse of what the fuck was going on in MGSV writer's room.
I like Drebin for one reason only. It's Kojima's most out of place movie reference ever. Drebin strips the ID Locks off weapons for you, and is named after Frank Drebin, protagonist of a series of films spun off of the short lived TV Show, _Police Squad._ The name of the moves? _Naked Gun..._ like the ID locks. It's so dumb I adore it.
I remember that both when I first played MGS4 and then was reminded/given new insight by this video 3 years ago, that I too thought it extremely odd that every culture in the world secede basically everything to a single nanomachine manufacturer.... but nowadays the idea of Tencent and/or Disney and/or Google combining into a international super corporation that we all just accept because we are all too tired to argue about it honestly just seems like a decent prediction of the future technological trajectory
the shitpost in barkley shut up and jam gaiden where square enix merges with food corporation goya and also gets into arms manufacturing is probably, like, just going to happen
Americans are a rapidly spreading fascist disease. Just the fact garbage in this thread are trying to imply vaccines that saved us from collapsing even more are the same thing
So, it was at my third viewing that this video brought tears to my eyes. I don't know if it's just the quarantine, the fact that it's making my sleep schedule completely fucked or my current situation, even maybe a combination of all of this. But I'd like to leave my take: This was my first MGS game. It was, at the time, probably the best game I played, which made it all the more surprising when I learned that it was mostly renounced by most others. After playing and getting to know more about the others, while I do understand why that happened, it's still my favorite one. But I was never capable of expressing it until this was spelled out: the end scene and how it relates to the theme of fatherhood. I wouldn't say I had a bad life growing up, but my father was rather negligent and dismissive of my success. As a kid, 10 years ago, the whole scene where Raiden get's a family only made sense to me. It's his family, they are all meant to be together. But right now, having cut ties with my father, I can understand that it isn't true. Still, the fact that Snake happens to have actual recognition from his "father", it still gets me. Because, to be completely honest, the absence of such respect is why I cut it off with my own. So, in a sense, by making it so Snake got to the scene where Big Boss shows him respect, I got that respect too. Maybe it's just nostalgia, or the fact that it was the first MGS game I played, but 4 still is my favourite. Even if MGS3 is technically better, this will always hold a special part in my heart
You should never have to apologize for this game being your favorite. I don't think MGS3 is technically better than 4. I would say 4's camo system is a great technical improvement over the one in 3. And I still think MGS4 has some of the best moments in the franchise. There are obvious flaws in the game's writing but it's still a great game, so screw what people think. MGS2 is my favorite in the series and that game used to get shit on all the time. It's only recently become popular to like because it predicted the future, but the tough as nails gameplay and the sheer number of VR missions and extra content in MGS2 has always made it the franchise peak for me.
I think the best way I can describe it is that MGS4 is a bad ending to the Metal Gear video game franchise. But it is the right ending for the story of the world Metal Gear takes place in.
It's my second time watching the review, at he time MGS 4 came out I was super deep down the MGS rabbit hole 1 stunned me, ditto 2 and 3 was my joint favourite game ever with Redident Evil 4 Upon its release I couldn't have been more hyped and..... I was confused, disappointed and sometimes excited This review is perfect it so perfectly captures the feel of that time for me Its nostalgia and critique at a level that I haven't come across before, I assume I will watch this review again because its legitimately a piece of art in the field of critique(a rare thing) I want a video from him on MGS 3 and 2 it would be fascinating, he clearly has a deep love and respect for the franchise for the right reasons
What a coinsidence, today is exactly 6 years ago this video dropped! Meaning, 6 years later, I'm still revisiting it because of its mark it left on me and my love for MGS.
If there's anyone who's scrolled down to the comments just to see if this video is worth watching in spite of its length, it is. Watch it however makes it comfortable. Whether that's in a series of short pieces, or like watching 2 or 3 movies, or in one single marathon, it doesn't matter. You don't even need to care that deeply at Metal Gear Solid 4; what matters in this video is not the game itself, but how it lets you understand the person watching it. This video is not sluggishly paced, it just has a lot of meaningful things to say. The only way I could condense it is to remove the space between words, because every single part builds into how it creates an impression of who this person is, why this work matters to them, why they have the opinions they have on it, and why that even matters. Steak, if you ever read this comment, know that I don't care if you never a video this popular ever again, or if you make a hundred that completely surpass it. I will keep on watching them, loving them as I did the Cowboy Bebop video, and coming back here. I've watched this four times now, and this is not going to the last time. Keep on going, and do what you want to do, not what anyone else wants you to do. That's, to me, what makes this video so important. Whatever thing you choose to make the next video on, whether it's some random anime series, or a video game, or a sequel to this focusing on some other part of Metal Gear, the most important part isn't that work, it's that you chose it, and you found it important. That's what makes this video special.
I posted this to the mgs subreddit and they hated it. One complaint was about the length. He complained about length of video in a MGS sub. The irony gets me to this day.
@@aubreyskipper9642Nope, but Lara Cody voiced Lilah in later episodes. I think those were produced after MGS4, but before Loss, but don't quote me on that.
Welcome back. If you're anything like me, this isn't your first visit and you specifically came back to this video. Glad to see you, and enjoy the show again.
While I'm not a fan of some of the songs, this essay is beautifully edited and well narrated definitely my favorite MGS4 and MGS series as a whole critique out there.
I've seen this video about 30 times now. TH-cam puts it on every time I watch more than 4 or 5 gaming related videos in a row. Sometimes it'll be playing when I fall asleep, and it'll be on again when I wake up. Please make more.
On the Protomen's Bandcamp page, there's a review saying they were introduced to them by this video. Having never heard of this channel before then, and having watched every review on here at least twice since then, I am so glad they did. This video is an absolute masterpiece and I love it! The AMV's to Protomen tracks are definitely highlights but the whole thing is just incredible. I've watched it all the way through twice already, and I will do the same again.
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this video-and this introduced me to The Protomen too! I genuinely believe this is one of the greatest videos on TH-cam ever made.
I find it so utterly weird and bizarre how this 6 years old video ended up on my recommendations exactly when it just so happens that I started obsessively listening to The Protomen. I loved SO much that Light up the night scene.
Excellent, Steak. Age hasn't slowed you down one bit. For real, though, terrific video. I've watched it three times, and I love it a bit more every time. Can't wait for your next video in 2020!
I used to go in for work at 12:00 am. I actually didn’t start till three but it takes a while to bike seven miles. At work I moved boxes from one trailer to the next. Miserable stuff. I listened to this video about 100 times back then. I don’t know why but it just brought me into an interesting and nostalgic world. This video for some reason or another got me through tough times. Even now I still rewatch it and I don’t know why. The humor and editing is on a level I wish I could reach. If I ever pull the trigger and start a TH-cam channel it would be because of this. I even started listening to the proto men and got my roommates into it. It’s a good video. Thank you
I did the same thing when I was working overnight at a retail chain, resetting product sets. I watched this video once a day, every day, five days a week, for at least 6 months. Steak did an amazing job on this thing.
@@alexanderduluoz long story, but also by over coming extreme challenges we become strong as people. Physical strength is only so useful but once you’ve used that strength to over come something you thought was impossible you’ll stop seeing problems as impossible. Mountains become mole hills. Bonus points if you also as vain as me and then you get the added benefit of knowing you can do things others can’t.
GOD, I NEED more essays like this with comedy, sincerity, fun edits, and just generally show that they have a fucking pulse. If you ever wondered why this is SO rewatachable, it's because it has a "structured rambling" feeling, a term that doesn't exist but it does now, where it never feels like he's reading a script or droning on, yet he manages to remain casual and engaging. His voice, tone, and delivery is always on point. It's so impressive really. (It also helps that the topic is something he's REALLY passionate about) Just wanna let you know every day you upload is a good day.
this dude unlocked something in my brain when i found this video structured yapping is a thing you can do?? you can overthink what the devs wanted in a videogame like this?? this is awesome and then it mixed with my sonic autism
2:23:00 Fun fact, the random officer Mei Ling talks to was voiced and mocapped by Hideo Kojima in the Japanese version of the game, while he's voiced by Crispin "Sundowner" Freeman in the English version.
That segment with liquid on the boat shutting off all the guns with your music edit is extremely awesome dude. Not to mention everything else. This whole video must have took forever to finish. Words cannot express my astonishment. Well done!
Johnny was a genome soldier, that's the entire reason he was at Shadow Moses in MGS1. Now if memory serves, the genome project was some kind of bizarre super soldier attempt using gene therapy to adapt the subjects to have Snake/Big Boss's genetics (which is also why Johnny kinda looks a little bit like a really young Solid Snake). This would have been the PERFECT avenue to go to give him a reason to avoid the nanomachine injections. He's already been part of one shadowy fucked up government experiment so why shouldn't "mandatory nanomachine injections" stink the same way?
Bro that would have been a PERFECT direction to take his character. The fact that they didn’t use this or at least some variation of this is just another, if not one of the best examples of sequel dissonance like Steak described.
@@orcastrike7750 I personally wouldn't count Johnny's "I just hate needles" line as sequel dissonance. It's not that he diverts from the characterization of his past self in a way that doesn't make sense, the problem with the scene is that it's the exact opposite: Unlike the rest of MGS1's tertiary cast he remains 100% consistent with his joke character origin, and as a result we feel the sting when it's pointed out just how easy it would have been to use the moment as a basis to build something, _anything_ for him to stand on as a character instead of just milking him for another cheap laugh. It's like Steak mentions in his take on Raiden's ending, the line "I don't think you're meant to think about this hard enough to think that Rose did something wrong" really sticks with me here. The same logic definitely feels relevant to scenes where Johnny is present in that it definitely comes off as though Kojima probably never so much as pondered the concept of doing anything more with this character. The goals set for him were simply to make the player laugh, conveniently be able to save Meryl through sheer dumb luck, and subsequently have her decide he's husband material for probably no other reason than to pre-emptively make sure nobody asked whether she was gonna get with Snake.
This shit put me to sleep 3 times but everytime I woke up I went back to pick up where I left off. I'm not even smart enough to express how good this is. It's funny and thought provoking. Coming from the biggest MGS fan I'm not mad at all. 👍🏿
Can't believe 1:39:04 got me into Protomen, of all things. The entire video is some of the best this platform has to offer, but that particular scene is now stuck with me. It works so goddamn well, it's gloriously hammy. I doubt anyone reads comments this far down, but if you somehow get this down, Bentley, thanks. This video, and the Venture Bros. one, are some of the best goddamn things I've watched in recent memory.
Yeeeeeah....this was the first time I ever heard of The Protomen. And it makes me even happier than I'm obsessed with his video essay. I'm actually saving up the Venture Bros. video for a sad day I'll need some cheering up for.
A video of this magnitude deserves a chapter select. Hope this helps you guys, this has been my favorite video for the past few months.

If Naomi went into this mission KNOWING she would be destroying the only thing keeping her alive and went through with it anyway for the greater good of the world and the next generation, and the kind of thematic moral sacrifice that would represent in tandem with the original ending where snake dies? •I really admire Kojima and I think he's an incredible talent but I also think his work is very flawed which is why it interests me enough to want to write a video this long about it

•The Protomen segments made it so I can't make any money off this video
•I still don't regret adding them
•I know the title will rub some people the wrong way. It's clickbaity and reads more negatively than I actually feel about the game, but the video was basically written with that title in mind from the beginning. As I state in the video, the experience of playing through and writing about the game warmed me up to it. With that, to me, the meaning of the title evolved too. I probably won't change it and I can't think of a better one anyway :v

That’s wild
Beyond epic.
that makes the situation even funnier. even as a kid I had no idea why suddenly I (or Snake to be exact) needed a background exposition on the boss I just killed. every other game in the franchise knew how to naturally insert characters backstory (especially if you're on the "bad" side), so knowing the VA himself couldn't take this seriously is beyond funny.
ps his monkey and raiden share the same mo cap actor, and that's a backstory I would rather like know than any of the B&B's
Sometimes actors don't know what they're getting into as Peter Weller is still baffled by Buckaroo Banzai. As for Payton, I'd have enjoyed hearing about his time on Deus Ex.
Khary Payton is a champ va. Honestly that may be the reason a part of me kinda liked Drebbib
if they let us save the B&B units, and let snake or rose rehabilitate them that would be interesting. Having them killed off makes them as forgettable as the FROGS.
It would have been difficult to implement with any depth, since you can kill or save each B&B as they appear. If devs wanted them to have a conversation with the player or with each other, to talk and interact with other characters during cutscenes, or to appear at different points in the game to assist you, there are potentially 14 combinations or more depending on how a developer writes them (e.g 'nanomachines turn their mind into a single unit').
e.g if x = a B&B you killed, and 1,2,3,4 are each member of the B&B Unit, then combos look like:
xxxx (all killed)
1234 (all saved)
1xxx
x2xx
xx3x
xxx4
12xx
1x3x
1xx4
x2xx
x23x
x2x4
xx3x
xx34
Also the b&b squad should have been both a mix between men and women, and they should have told their own stories.
Drebin is cancer on this game.
You don't kill them off unless you want to kill them off lol
I get the feeling this was an elaborate ruse to show your Protomen AMVs to as many people as possible.
And we should respect him for that. He's spreading the work of the gods.
For a frame after Light up the Night he basically says that in text form.
RockyPixel Hey, I ain't complaining
There are the *EMBERS* of a fire that's gone *OUT* BUT I CAN STILL FEEL THE HEAT ON MY SKIN, THIS MESS THAT WE'RE IN, YOU AND I
That scene (you know which one, BANG) will never be the same in my eyes again.
And why not? They’re GREAT AMVs that sell the scenes they’re put over extremely well.

Cuz your right she’s gaslighting the shit out of him
if u wanna take metal gear rising as canon, u can kinda see it as their relationship didn't end up working out
@@hishkapish4817 they seem like they have a decent relationship, but obviously they can't be together for a while and Raiden has no qualms with flirting with Courtney (which I really can't blame him for, especially after all the crap he went through because of Rose)
Love seeing the recent comments. Love this video.
>Gets on motorcycle
>Tells her own clone son Snake to hang onto her waist

how to spoon?
@Travis Brink yes but didn't he grow inside her womb and wasn't he birthed by her like a son? I mean he's more her son than big boss's since he's just a clone of him but was actually birthed by her.
Idk
@Travis Brink did you... watch this video... or play the game...
But at least I faught for what I believed in."
That's exactly Raiden in Rising.
@@Roler42 I mean no, a bigger blow to the private military industry complex than destroying the patriots is to abolish PMC’s as a whole.
@@Roler42
This is also something unique to him as a _Metal Gear_ protagonist; Raiden is the only protagonist that has a family and home he can reliably go to and be safe and at peace, something not even Solid Snake offered himself as he continued to travel the world to stop Metal Gears with Otacon and eventually Sunny. Despite embracing his violent past and partaking in brutal military combat, he’s finally at peace with himself and the world that made him.
And in some ways raiden succeeds where gray fox fails....

One of the details I noticed in this video and that I love is that when he shows the date of mgs4 on the Google page thing underneath that there is a like and dislike button and at the beginning of the video it is on dislike but at the end of the video it's on like at I thought that was a really good detail and shows how his views change throughout the video
Just watched a 3 hour video shitting on my second favourite game of all time, and my favourite metal gear game.
Loved every second
Djnerdyboy gotta say I can respect a person that can still take and accept criticism for something they love. More power to you, just don’t feel like you have to hate MGS4 now haha
@@wreday720 its not that hard, i watch a lot of videos of people hating peace walker and the phantom pain, my second favorite and favorite mgs games and the only thing i could say after watching was... i dont care i still love them
jeff blacklight it’s not that it’s hard, it’s just that there’s not enough people willing to see or even entertain different points of view
Strangely enough I'm just after doing the same thing, Loved the game, but I also loved how concise steak is in his analysis, this video is an absolute joy to watch
I also loved it so much, definitely second favorite
This video is a fucking masterpiece. It actively makes Metal Gear Solid 4 a better game. The whole franchise is enhanced because this video exists.
totally agreed
Same, though I probably will never play 4 because it PS3 exclusively.
I just finished watching the whole video and I can only think: where is this dude's video on MGS5?
@@thunderring8056 If you've got a strong enough rig, the RPCS3 emulator can in fact run the game. Look into it if you ever feel bored.

First video that I watched from him glad to see its not some guy hating on it but is giving it tough love and criticism and not being a asshole
That's what it is: but so many idiorts don't seem to realize that, because they don't actually watch it and leave hate.
My god...
Wow.. Yeah the reason I love watching videos like this is because for whatever reason I am SO BAD at noticing stuff like that... 😅🤦♀️
That is so fucking bizarre omfl 😂
I remember that both when I first played MGS4 and then was reminded/given new insight by this video 3 years ago, that I too thought it extremely odd that every culture in the world secede basically everything to a single nanomachine manufacturer.... but nowadays the idea of Tencent and/or Disney and/or Google combining into a international super corporation that we all just accept because we are all too tired to argue about it honestly just seems like a decent prediction of the future technological trajectory

So, it was at my third viewing that this video brought tears to my eyes. I don't know if it's just the quarantine, the fact that it's making my sleep schedule completely fucked or my current situation, even maybe a combination of all of this. But I'd like to leave my take:
This was my first MGS game.
And that's why when art touches your soul its a lot more meaningful. Mgs is the best game series ever.
It's my second time watching the review, at he time MGS 4 came out I was super deep down the MGS rabbit hole 1 stunned me, ditto 2 and 3 was my joint favourite game ever with Redident Evil 4
Upon its release I couldn't have been more hyped and..... I was confused, disappointed and sometimes excited
This review is perfect it so perfectly captures the feel of that time for me
Its nostalgia and critique at a level that I haven't come across before, I assume I will watch this review again because its legitimately a piece of art in the field of critique(a rare thing)
I want a video from him on MGS 3 and 2 it would be fascinating, he clearly has a deep love and respect for the franchise for the right reasons
Same dude and I mean exactly the same, played the game when I was young and loved it.
If anyone is scrolling down to see if this comment is worth it, it’s not.

On the Protomen's Bandcamp page, there's a review saying they were introduced to them by this video. Having never heard of this channel before then, and having watched every review on here at least twice since then, I am so glad they did. This video is an absolute masterpiece and I love it! Thank you

(It also helps that the topic is something he's REALLY passionate about)

It also gave him the worst IBS any man has ever had to suffer through. I guess he just got the worst genes.
Bro that would have been a PERFECT direction to take his character. The fact that they didn’t use this or at least some variation of this is just another, if not one of the best examples of sequel dissonance like Steak described.
@@nogohoho Other way around, the nanomachines were filtering the water the soldiers were drinking, that's why he has the shits
I wish
