It's funny I came across your comment. That's how I first played MGS as well. I went out and bought the game as soon as I could after playing that demo!
Very similar but my demo came from the UK official playstation magazine just had the first section up to the lift. I was instantly hooked with storyline and cinematic style.
Bro, you can run and shoot at the same. Hold square to draw weapon, then hold X to enable move/aim. Continue holding X, then release square button to shoot. Every time you press Square, you'll shoot, and you'll be able to move if you keep holding X. Makes Ocelot fight much easier
Played the game like 4 times and never knew you could actually be transported in the back of trucks! A testament to the amount of small details on offer!
The series in general has so many small details to count. I've played 1-5 many times and always learn something new from playing or watching videos. I never get tired of playing them.

Funny story: When I was like 13 I beat Psycho Mantis WITHOUT changing the controller to the second port. The reason being that I am Mexican and was playing the European Spanish dub version AND turns out that the Spaniards use a word for "controller" and "controller port" that is almost unheard of in Mexico and therefore, I had no idea what the HELL the colonel was talking about and i just could not figure it out. I just killed him in like a million tried chipping away at his health and it took me like an hour no joke. Imagine my shock when someone told me that you were supposed to do in PLAIN FUCKING SPANISH lol.
If I remind it correctly, you could also shoot the two statues in the room and that would do the same trick as switching controller port. What a legendary game this was.
I remember being a kid and reaching the CD case bit. Colonel tells me to check the back of the CD case. Man, I was stuck for days. Running around looking for a CD case in game. When it was actually the physical Metal Gear Solid CD case I got from the store haha🤦😂
Yea, this was before my house had internet access and I didn’t have the original case for the game when I originally played it in ‘98. If it wasn’t for good ol’ video game mags like EGM and GameFan having it printed in their Tips and Tricks sections back at that time, I couldn’t say HOW LONG this would’ve taken me to figure out. (To the OP: I also thought at the time it was referring to an in-game CD case lying on a desk or something that I had to find.)
I have a foxhound tattoo on my calf. This entire series in-short, kept me away from a lot of trouble and help with a lot of my depression as a kid. It helped me accept the ugliest of situations and made me laugh at the right times. Cheers.
I remember it saying sexual situations on the rating. My mom bought this game and wouldn’t give it to me until 2 years after release only for me to find out that it was the underwear scene lol
Its actually not just because of that scene. Its also because during the Psycho Mantis scene she acts super sexual towards Snake and begs him to ''take her'' while under his control. Snake gets flirty in a few codec calls as well which I imagine pre 2000 got the old mums up in a tizzy as well :P
@@Azazreal oh yeah, that bit in the psycho mantis fight was uncomfortable considering my mom was sitting next to me, luckily she doesn't speak english but you don't need to understand it to get an idea of the situation.

I loved how the whole Ninja / Gray Fox first scene resembles the "Predator" (yeah the Arnold one), as theres such an erie horror tone on this segment. Psyco Mantis had that horror vibe as well. Come to think of it the bosses are all really good regarding backstory, looks, character... i just love this game man..!
That's why the game had such an impact. At that time you just never saw that level of character development or convincing voice acting. I think it was probably the first game to do this and it basically changed how people perceived games and what a game could actually be story wise.
Pretty sure this one of the first games I've played where it actually scared me as a kid first playing it. The ninja scene and psycho mantis always gave me chills, and the ninja part I was thinking ghosts and stuff. Then I learned after getting the camera 📷 you could catch pics of actual ghosts hidden in the game. When I first discoved it was taking a picture of myself in the women's bathroom after Meryl, and to my horror after developing it what I saw.
MGS1 will forever be one of my best memories in gaming. I remember playing it for the first time growing up and I was absolutely blown away. I've probably beat it 50+ times to this day and still enjoy it. This game was years ahead of its time. There's so many details, dynamics, and different aspects of game play along with a a very good story that ties everything in perfectly. With better graphics it could easily rival any game that has come out since then 24 years ago. All in a very good Era of gaming too. Today's games look more realistic and intense than ever, but they just lack something that this game had. Idk what it is, but they're just not the same.
Don’t know if you’re going to see this but I believe I have found out why new games don’t feel like the old ones. In short It’s soul I think today games have less and less soul/self associated with them. I think. To some degree. There is a sort of fatigue. A fatigue that all the stories have been told and that there’s no real point of pushing as hard as those guys did because they already got to the top of the mountain. So there’s a lot less passion and drive to achieve what has already been done. Soul is the reason games coming out today feel lifeless.
In Metal Gear (MSX, 1987) you can use thermal goggles and cigarettes to see laser beams and use cardboard box to hide yourself from moving surveillance cameras. Metal Gear Solid had many elements that first appeared in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX, 1990) from little gameplay details (catching cold and alerting everyone by sneezing, disarming claymores, punching walls for luring enemies) to storydriven and scripted sequences (stairway chase, battle with Hind D), pretty good story and great music
I actually really liked the over the top action scenes! You have to consider that The Matrix and Romeo must die had just come out and those kind of scenes were THE new thing! Finally Hollywoord recognised something that was typically found only in anime. I think for that reason it really fits the game with its over the top villains and a Hollywood version of something that has essentially the structure of an anime

One thing I did enjoy with the Twin Snakes version was that the devs did include a shortcut to reduce the backtracking for changing the keycard shapes. On the right side of the main hangar there are steam and nitrogen lines you could shoot to instantly change the keycard shape. But it was risky because it involved hang, drop, and then catching the next rail to get to the pipes. MGS1 is damn good. If you do have a PS3 and a physical PS1 copy you can play it that way as well. All PS3s play PS1 physical games.
MGS is still my all time favorite games ever made! I played the demo on the PlayStation jam pack, a demo cd that came with your PlayStation purchase. I still have my original copy. I’ll never get rid of it :) absolutely love this damn game. A masterpiece of modern gaming!
14:35 Yeah. I remember this, played it when I was young as well. "What CD case?? I don't have any CD item in my inventory to check, what does he mean!?" It took me quite a while.
19:23 You know, that's actually not such a far-fetched idea, considering that the Genome Soldiers were all under Psycho Mantis' influence. It's possible that he was using his psychic powers to turn them into walking, talking cameras. Then again, they can still instantly alert their comrades after Mantis dies, so maybe they just have bodycams or something. Anyway, great review as always, Gman. Keep it up!
Agreed about Snake's voice, it's very distinct and powerful. I'm proud to say, I can do a dead-on Solid Snake impression. If I had a time machine, I would visit my younger self at age 11 and speak in the Snake voice and watch his brain explode, causing to a time paradox.
I was so dumb as a kid that i thought that Campbell meant the back of the CD case you get in game..... i spent days trying to figure out how to look at it.... finally i asked my dad to help and he said, "Why dont you look at the back of the real CD case?" Biggest face palm ever
I’m glad you mentioned tenchu , as it is my favorite game , many TH-camrs who speak of stealth genre , forget about tenchu , and tenchu and metal gear help create a genre that to this day is still my favorite genre of gaming !
Why was it so good? Because when it was released in 1998 (the best year in gaming EVER) there was absolutely nothing else like it on any other platform, mate to me this game is like a fine wine that gets better with age and it's still the best game in the series, this game will forever be a dead set masterpiece!
Sorry Shin, although Metal Gear on PS1 was apparently more popular, for me it was Tenchu : Stealth Assassins with the TV brightness turned down ultra low so you can only really see the Ki Meter. I'm so sad.
Considering the style looks the same as some of his recent thumbnails, I'm gonna go ahead and assume it's an artist he's throwing money at to make them for him, so basically the source would be either Gman himself and/or the artist.
Recently just completed this game about a few days ago. I’m already started on MGS2, and I just want to thank Gman for getting me into metal gear with confidence
I found Twin Snakes to be pretty good as a remake, although to be fair, this was my first introduction to the original MGS. I definitely need to play the original emulated to see the differences. Either way, it was a major revelation for video games and has gone to create on of the most insane, yet incredible series ever.

The stealth effect is used the same way as water effect and works if you use a 3dfx Glide API, or emulate it with a Glide Wrapper. It was also possible to run at 1024x768 if you used Voodoo 2 in SLi.
Although the game has aged I love going back and playing it just to be in the world and atmosphere of shadow Moses. I was like 10 or 11 when it came out and I just loved it from day one.
I am amazed I missed out on this franchise as long as I did. I didn't even know about Metal Gear until I played Metal Gear Rising back in 2013 during that whole fanwar: The DmC reboot vs MGR. Then I was so interested in the world I jumped back to MGS4 and was amazed, then I went and played the HD Collection for Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater and Peace walker and was even more blown away. Seriously, I recently played through MGS1 for the first time via emulator after loving MGS5 and was so ready to get invested in this series. MGS1 was campy and silly and full of heart but had genuinely sharp and incisive commentary on the state of the world hidden within. I loved it... And then my computer wasn't able to emulate MGS2 properly. And there's no PC ports of half of the games... and they're all locked away on consoles that range from inconvenient to buy to obsolete. This has to be one of the hardest franchises to get into for a newcomer in gaming, and some damn remasters or at least proper ports to PC would let me and many others finally join in without having to go out of our way to get all these old consoles and games.
Even if it happened I'd never buy it. MGS rights are held by Konami who did such scummy things with their company in recent years I could never do it justice in a comment.
It was good because Hideo Kojima had not yet jumped the shark when it came to excessicely long cut-scenes. Yes they were a bit on the long side in MGS compared to other playstation games at the time. But nowhere near as drawn out as the cut-scenes that came in later sequels.
Its getting worse with every new game he puts out MGS V, the Intro Mission takes control away from you pretty much every 30 seconds, and it takes forever, but at least once your dropped in Afghanistan, you get a full mission with only 2 or so little cutscenes. Death Stranding... for the first 3 hours of the game, you get to control yourself for 5- to 10% of that time. The entire rest are cutscenes. And they are NOT that interesting. Almost refunded the game because of it.
@@kenobiwanobi889 I completed MGS4. I felt it concluded the story og Solid Snake and didn't feel like looking into further sequels. Compared to a dozen extremely dissapointing and boring ending I would take another 2 hours long Kojima cinematic anytime.
@@WARXion Fair point. As I said, I never got to play MGS4, but after what people told me, I imagined it to be similiar to newer Kojima-Games. It was hard for me to really enjoy MGS Vs story, not because of the length and amount of cutscenes, but more the many times youre expected to have played other games to understand the plot (There were two non-main-MGS-titles for the PSP or Vita, dont quite remember, which are set directly before MGSV), and just that the plot goes three different directions at once, you never know what it really is all about, and it ends so abruptly. Although that isnt so much Kojimas fault as Konamis.
I think konami should remastered metal gear 1 and 2 when solid snake during his days in foxhound was led and betrayed by big boss and greyfox and fights both them in zanzibar and outer heaven. Another is giving other metal gears solid characters their own spin offs such as grey fox, ocelot, liquid snake and foxhound and solidus snake since raiden metal gear solid revengeance was a successful and memorable with the memes, characters, and boss fights and more importantly soundtrack
I don´t know what version of the pc port you played, or what versions are available, but in my original CD version the stealth effects worked perfectly! Also, when the Louvre of videogames finally opens, Metal Gear Solid and Half Life each deserve a special place of honor. Two incredibly influential games!

The tone of Twin Snakes isn't too far off from what MGS eventually had in it, really, so that's why I'm saying it

@Stefano Pavone I genuinely didn't know that. I just Googled the answer after I got tired of searching aimlessly.

For anyone curious GOG just released Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2.

Idk what it is, but they're just not the same.
i feel this way about alot of games now vs then. games back then felt more like a game, nowadays games feel more like simulations
Don’t know if you’re going to see this but I believe I have found out why new games don’t feel like the old ones. In short
It’s soul
I think today games have less and less soul/self associated with them.

5:46 that's still my ringtone now lmao
I still remember that Phantom Pain video you did but I never thought you'd do a full on review on the original Metal Gear Solid or any other entry for that matter! That Twin Snakes tear down was absolutely legendary. I wonder what the chances are for you covering a few more of them?
Man I was so proud showing off this game to my PC-only brother at the time. Wore out the PSM demo disc going through that intro over and over.
Yo thanks for the video GMan and covering one of the most prolific series in gaming. Everyone has their own favorite Metal Gear Solid title and personally I need to play one of them to get a better understanding of its story and characters. Yes I'm super late on this but things going on in the world maybe all need a little bit of Metal Gear Solid in our lives. Take care everyone and stay safe.
Charismatic characters, unintelligible story that still somehow hooked you, subtle bits of self conscious humor, that one " boss fight" when yo had to plug your pad to the second slot, original gameplay, memorable soundtrack etc etc
Man!!!! I was watching MGS clips this morning after a long time...
What a coincidence!?!
That's what I thought too. This morning I decided to Marathon the series and suddenly Gman uploaded a video about mgs :D
