Wow, I’m a proud owner of an S1H but I still feel like Panasonic doesn’t get enough credit after making so many amazing top of the line cameras.
Yeah AF aside they are killing it!
Too many people need af though, it's become so useful for solo shooters/as a back up, even if they are good at MF
sad asd well i own a gh5 and i shoot myself most of the time. Af could be better but i always get the job done. No other camera has the 6k photo mode and i love it. I do all my self portraits with it. I set it to face detection, start the camera and here we go. It never disapoints me. I was thinking about buying other cameras but 6k mode too important for me. A gh5 is a really good hybrid cam even if it has no canon af. But in photos panasonic af is very very good and for video it is good enough. I will be a happy s5 owner soon

I agree, its like with all they do they are being refused to be tagged ROYALTY for the fantastic specs they offer. As a Lumix user, I know they ROCK.

Hey, put the times inside the parenthesis (x:xx) in the description and you will get the times in the timeline of the video 😜
Add them to the main description and TH-cam will create chapters in the timeline :) We do that for our videos. No need for parenthesis.
We shoot all our videos on S1H, GH5 and GH5S. But very tempted at Sony now with the a7SIII coming. What will the future hold for the a7IV? And why doesn't Sony offer shutter angles!
So far, have loved filming results with the S5 tests we are doing. We won 28 awards making a short film with the GH5s and so this will be interesting to see what it can do for the sequel ... 🙂
2020 might be a year to forget but what a time to be in the market for a new camera. So many good options to choose from, not to mention cameras like the GH5, G9, and X-T3 seeing discounts! Great review as always, Caleb!

Finally - looks like the camera I've been waiting for. Was thinking of going GH5-GH6 but this is full frame and hands down it's like a full frame GH5.

Dude you sold me on the G85 years ago. I loved that camera so much I bought another one & started my business. Then got the GH5 after watching your video & it’s my favorite camera of all time. I’m watching this video & it just feels right. This is definitely my next camera. Thank you!
Caleb: Another good one. The autofocus is clearly not ready for primetime or competitive with Sony and Canon but it does show clear improvement. Despite the mico HDMI this is another bold shot by Panasonic for a ton of value in a cost competitive body.
TH-cam just recommend me a tonnes of videos about the s5, but yours is the first one I chose, thanks man for convincing me about the s5, I was just about getting the a7iii.

I just bought one but hasn’t shipped yet. My first full frame. Was considering Z5, Z6, R6 and A7iii. In the end, IBIS, fully articulating screen and a great deal won me over for thé S5. I currently have a Canon M50 and Nikon D5500. I consider my new S5 a huge upgrade.

Nice review, Caleb! I had my fingers crossed for no crop 60fps on this camera... Really wish Panasonic could find a way to include that on their full frame cameras.
I wonder if that might get fixed via a firmware update at some point? I do some much stuff that moves quickly that I prefer 60...

Really, really good review. Watched the Gerald Undone review of the S5 and it really put me off this camera, yet gave a glowing review of the Sony A7SIII a few weeks ago....this seemed much more balanced and gave a whole lot more of what the camera can do. Thanks!

I liked your autofocus test, overall, top notch review. If I were to get into full frame cameras, I believe I would go with this S5. I'm already been a Panasonic GH4 owner for nearly 5 years.
ALRIGHT! Finally, this is it! I've been looking for the smaller FF from Panasonic, and the price is good too. Now just more smaller lenses (doesn't have to be super fast) and i'm set! I'm ready to jump aboard on the L-mount directions. Nice that old S-line cameras are getting the AF benefits aswell, feel good.

Was leaning toward the A7iii, but S5 seems the way to go for the price point, especially since I'm already familiar with Panasonic and I can get the 4k60 at the same price point. Hey there! Really like the video. I’m a filmmaker currently using Sony a6300. Looking forward to upgrading to a Full frame camera for video. With my budget I think this is the best option, comparing to the new coming a7c. I also take some photos for fun, so a hybrid is a must, otherwise I’d just go for the BMD pocket 6k. This video helped a lot in my decision! :)

Very good review and introduction. Thanks! I would definitely get this camera but I can't deal with contrast only autofocus that I had with the GH5. If and when Panasonic decides to get phased detect autofocus, I would consider their cameras again.

I'd be interested in an L Mount Alliance video overview once the next round of f/w comes through. For instance, the Sigma fp was too niche for me to start with, but the compatibility makes it very tempting once funds permit (although this S5 may alter that equation.) Also, the Leica SL2 has some interesting video specs, I believe.
Between you and Gerald, I don't need anyone else to recommend or criticize cameras and various gear :)

I bet my balls he's a sponsor/paid promoter of Canon, and I just can't keep watching him while he ignored all the great Sony, Panasonic, Fuji and Blackmagic cameras :(
13:00 Very glad to see that out of frame areas of non-16:9 aspect ratios can actually be dimmed down.
I have always found the frame markings on the GH5 a bit lacking because they were just dashed grey lines, which blend in with the video in many situations, making composing for widescreen aspect ratios more tedious than it needed to be. With the frame mask you can actually see at a glance how the composition looks. It's one of the little things that can help one improve their video skills... thank you Panasonic!
I was so excited when they announced the frame guides with the new firmware... And when I saw what they looked like eventually, I felt cheated. Still hoping Panasonic will fix this.

Sir, do you think the quality of images by X1500 is worse than S5?
Mostly I make videos of street food. It needs fast AF and deep depth. So I also consider the Panasonic X1500 camcorder. However, I also consider a good quality of images and filming inside of restaurants or filming in the evening. Because of these 2 matters, I hesitate to choose X1500. I do not color correction after editing at Premier Pro. My style is quickly filming, editing, and loading on TH-cam. In this aspect, the X1500 is good for me. May I look forward to your reply?

Excellent video - straight to the important points, thank you. Camera looks like a great option for some, especially with the anamorphic options, but cropped 4K 60fps is very disappointing for me as I shoot almost everything at that frame rate. If it was capable of full frame 60fps I'd buy one today.
Yes, if you're using full 16:9 ratio but if you have to crop in post as a result of a letterbox decision then it makes not much of a diff. and nobody would ever know.

One more thought; would you recommend jumping from the A7iii to the S5? It feels a little lateral, but (on paper) you still get some really good video upgrades, obviously the biggest being anamorphic.

People are sleeping on the S5, it's an amazing all around performer.
This is the first full frame camera to make me seriously consider buying it. The price is right and it hasn't been beaten to death with the cripple hammer.

That autofocus definitely seems improved! Still sad it's DFD and not phase detect; it's hard to consider Panasonic's offering without keeping that in mind
I have no idea about the relationship between Sony and Pana in depth, but can you image if Sony gave their juicy PDAF sensors to Panasonic? They would ruin their own video market. Panasonic is insanely valued as seen by the GH5/s, and even their tiny cameras that can record 4K for a long time. If the GH5 came with the lighting quick AF... Imagine how much juicier it would be, and surely it would eat up some Sony sales.
Why are you shooting video in Auto focus?
Caleb man. I love U. Gh5 user and i am a bit Concern about this late camera Fever around 4000 Dolars. I used a Gh4 and Gh5 and always tempting to change to sony, but this camera its perfect for The price. Nice review as always
You know what we all want.......GH5, GH5's and S5 comparison and if it's worth to upgrade. Only thing I don't like about it is not having 2 UHS II slots since I upgraded to all UHS II to dual record.
Man by far your video is .most helpful. Quick question, i ask B&h does the s5 has in body stabilization they said no but i see on your video it does? And do it works good like the gh5?
