That might depend on what lenses you use, too. If you typically use Canon or other full frame lenses on a Speedbooster, the S5 makes sense with an adapter as you dont need new lenses. But if you have mostly m43 native lenses, you'll need a bunch of new lenses for the S5.

The camera looks great, but the auto focus pulsing that is still present is just disappointing. The two things that makes me hesitate to upgrade from the GH5 is that they have improved the autofocus, but not enough to compete with Sony or Canon, and that L-mount kinda sucks in comparison to Sony's robust lens system. It's going to be a hard choice between saving money for this camera or going with the Sony a7s iii for $1300 more. I just wish they'd announce the GH6, because I really do not mind working with MFT.
@@neelixramirez9411 They did, but that could mean 3 months from now or 3 years. I read an interview with someone from Panasonic who basically didn't want to discuss GH development beyond "We haven't abandoned it." Sadly I'm getting a point where I may have to jump ship.
In apsc mode the focussing seems better, and than you are still using a larger sensor area than with mft. You'll need wide angle ff glass or apsc glass though.
Michael Schagen Might be better, but still not great or even good compared to their major competitors. I’m through defending Panasonic’s terrible autofocus.
This video has really opened my eyes to a compelling option! I have been teetering on the Lumix G9 vs. future Z6s vs. XT-4. So, why not add a 4th to further muddle my procrastinating brain.
Nice review, Caleb! I had my fingers crossed for no crop 60fps on this camera... Really wish Panasonic could find a way to include that on their full frame cameras.
One more thought; would you recommend jumping from the A7iii to the S5? It feels a little lateral, but (on paper) you still get some really good video upgrades, obviously the biggest being anamorphic.
ALRIGHT! Finally, this is it! I've been looking for the smaller FF from Panasonic, and the price is good too. Now just more smaller lenses (doesn't have to be super fast) and i'm set! I'm ready to jump aboard on the L-mount directions. Nice that old S-line cameras are getting the AF benefits aswell, feel good.
Hey, thanks so much for this. Exactly the info I needed as I'm looking to upgrade from a GH4. Was leaning toward the A7iii, but S5 seems the way to go for the price point, especially since I'm already familiar with Panasonic and I can get the 4k60 at the same price point. Was also surprised by the results of your comparison of the S-log and V-log. Very helpful video. Thank you!
I’m looking to upgrade my camera from my trusty DSLR with a focus on video. This cameras seems to have the best features for my budget…but how does it do with still photos?
Thank you for the good video. I am in S.Korea and English is my 2nd language, but your good pronunciation and detailed explanation are good enough for me to understand. Thumbs up !! Sir, do you think the quality of images by X1500 is worse than S5? Mostly I make videos of street food. It needs fast AF and deep depth. So I also consider the Panasonic X1500 camcorder. However, I also consider a good quality of images and filming inside of restaurants or filming in the evening. Because of these 2 matters, I hesitate to choose X1500. I do not color correction after editing at Premier Pro. My style is quickly filming, editing, and loading on TH-cam. In this aspect, the X1500 is good for me. May I look forward to your reply?
I liked your autofocus test, overall, top notch review. If I were to get into full frame cameras, I believe I would go with this S5. I'm already been a Panasonic GH4 owner for nearly 5 years.
Thanks... We are having a lot of "Camera (features)" in those new entry level FF mirrorless : Panasonic S5, Nikon Z5... Happy to see camera makers are coming with interesting tools for us to enjoy photography. In the of techs the future look promising for next updates : Z6, Z7, S1,... RP, R Thanks.

The in-body stabilization on the GH5 is amazing.. And then once you add the lens with IS, all around the stabilization is GREAT !!! I have been hearing the stabilization on the S5 isn't as good as the GH5.. Can anybody confirm or deny this claim...?!
Is there a way to record 4 channels of audio simultaniously if you use the flash socket XLR-adapter? Or is it limited to 2ch either via 3.5mm jack OR the XLR-Adapter? Thanks
The ALTSON EF-L Mount Converter enables the use of Canon EF-mount lenses on L-mount mirrorless camera bodies, and maintains full lens performance, including autofocus in AF-S mode, as well as in-camera correction and image stabilization technologies.
Purchased the S5 today with 20-60 kit lens for 1200£! Sold my 5D Mark IV that was taking dust and for photography and spot-on autofocus I've the EOS R. Paired with the Ninja it will be very interesting to try the 5.9K RAW! The other choice was the R5C, as I consider myself an hybrid shooter, but compared to what the S5 offers at the price, the R5C looks a bit overpriced right now. And as I'm not a PRO anymore, I can save some money as my video projects are just for myself, for fun and probably to expand my portfolio. Thanks for the video Caleb!
Caleb man. I love U. Gh5 user and i am a bit Concern about this late camera Fever around 4000 Dolars. I used a Gh4 and Gh5 and always tempting to change to sony, but this camera its perfect for The price. Nice review as always
13:00 Very glad to see that out of frame areas of non-16:9 aspect ratios can actually be dimmed down. I have always found the frame markings on the GH5 a bit lacking because they were just dashed grey lines, which blend in with the video in many situations, making composing for widescreen aspect ratios more tedious than it needed to be. With the frame mask you can actually see at a glance how the composition looks. It's one of the little things that can help one improve their video skills... thank you Panasonic!
I was so excited when they announced the frame guides with the new firmware... And when I saw what they looked like eventually, I felt cheated. Still hoping Panasonic will fix this.
Hey there! Really like the video. I’m a filmmaker currently using Sony a6300. Looking forward to upgrading to a Full frame camera for video. With my budget I think this is the best option, comparing to the new coming a7c. I also take some photos for fun, so a hybrid is a must, otherwise I’d just go for the BMD pocket 6k. This video helped a lot in my decision! :)
i'm looking forward to S5mk2. hope they will improve processing power to give 4k60 10bit 422 with no record limit (and a Full-sized HDMI). that's all I ask!
Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐
Thanks for this review and the great work you do on this channel! Very helpful! Will you make a camera guide for the s5? Would love to learn more about how to use it well.
Seems like a solid camera. Panasonic is really good at listening to the room (their customers) This has me even more excited about the GH6. If they gave the GH6 all of these same video features, and only made the auto-focus perfect, I would be more than happy to upgrade from my GH5 and GH5S.
I think the GH5 is still better for video than the S5, even if only because of the 400mbps ALL-I recording The GH6 needs to be at least on par with the a7s3
I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.
The S5 is on sale right now for $1500 which seems like a steal. Ive been a photographer for 17 years and starting to get more into video. Im a Canon guy but dont want to pay $2500 for the R6. Was looking at the G9 for $1k but saw this was on sale for $1500 right now. Tempting.
I am looking at either purchasing this camera or the R6. Auto Focus isn't the most important to me but aside from that they have very similar features. What would you recommend and why?

Thanks for this review. As a Sony A7iii user i feel lack of 10 bit recording in 4k in my camera. Autofocus in Panasonic is in my opinion the weakest feature - still worth to think about the transition to S5 :) Thanks Again!
That camera would be a great upgrade to my G7. If I understand correctly I can choose the crop of the camera? Because I enoy the MFT crop for super-telephoto wildlife video, so being able to crop in would be super helpful, while still having better low light performance than the G7
LUMIX S5 VIDEO SHOOTERS PSA: Issue: Glitchy, pixelated lines in the image when using HDMI. Lines of different lengths appearing in different parts of the image a single frame at a time. Long story short. I have been chasing this issue for a couple of months now. Returned my original S5 for a new one, sent my Ninja V in for repair, was sent back with a clean bill of health. Bought the $60 Atomos cable, the issue persists. I originally thought the issue was unique to 5.9K ProRes RAW, turns out, that these lines show up when using the HDMI out in-general. The 12bit 5.9K ProRes Raw image out of this setup is unbelievably good and more than useable for any professional production. But this issue makes the camera impossible to trust for paid work when recording over HDMI. I have found many other users with the same issue, including a thread of comments on Spence Sakurai's review of the camera. IF YOU ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE, PLEASE REPORT IT TO PANASONIC SO THAT THEY TAKE THE ISSUE SERIOUSLY.
The panasonic S5 autofocus system could be a great feature in the near future but it might also be at the same time highly dependent on hardware performance which can be a disadvantage. That could be fine in the year 3030 but as of now in 2021 it will be unpractical and not helpful to the brand's camera lineup. They could just at least develop it further behind the scenes but not implement it yet until it's already efficient and effective.

I think they said they are working on a GH camera
@@neelixramirez9411 They did, but that could mean 3 months from now or 3 years. I read an interview with someone from Panasonic who basically didn't want to discuss GH development beyond "We haven't abandoned it."
Sadly I'm getting a point where I may have to jump ship.
Panasonic must develop phase detect auf focus as fast as possible. But maybe it is already too late.
Watching this in 2024 as a owner of a (new to me) S5, that I got for $800! Absolute value camera!
This video has really opened my eyes to a compelling option! I have been teetering on the Lumix G9 vs. future Z6s vs. XT-4. So, why not add a 4th to further muddle my procrastinating brain.
People are sleeping on the S5, it's an amazing all around performer.
hmmm... really got me considering my first Panasonic. Great first look review.
it's hard to choose between Panasonic S5 or bmpcc 4K. Thank you for the details.
Bmpcc 4k for best image quality and tweakability. S5 for allround use. I want both😂
Nice review, Caleb! I had my fingers crossed for no crop 60fps on this camera... Really wish Panasonic could find a way to include that on their full frame cameras.
I wonder if that might get fixed via a firmware update at some point? I do some much stuff that moves quickly that I prefer 60...
Awesome review as usual, you're my favorite reviewer Caleb, thx for the great job. So clear, quick and clean
One more thought; would you recommend jumping from the A7iii to the S5? It feels a little lateral, but (on paper) you still get some really good video upgrades, obviously the biggest being anamorphic.
I could watch your videos non-stop. Another awesome video and review. Thanks for this, Caleb!
I'm a big fan, Caleb. You make great content, and your voice is super relaxing.
Excellent review. You're really helping decide which camera to buy!
Thank you!
Have you made the switch yet? curious on your thoughts after doing so
I’m looking to upgrade my camera from my trusty DSLR with a focus on video. This cameras seems to have the best features for my budget…but how does it do with still photos?
Specs look great other than a clearly artificial 30 minute limit for 4K 30 fps internal.
Yeah right ?!
If you were to choose now for weddings what you would buy: Panasonic s5 or Sony a7 III? Thanks
Though I don't use autofocus much I do wish they'd just develop a phase detect autofocus system.
RP, R
Thanks.
Why? These cameras offer very little for photography, pretty much all new features are for video
Multumesc pentru informatii dar nici pe departe nu merita up grade de la cele 2 GH5S ale mele cu toate obiectivele prime MFT pe care le am deja. Ar fi o pierdere aproape inutila de bani foarte multi. M-ati convins sa raman in continuare pe GH5S.
The in-body stabilization on the GH5 is amazing.. And then once you add the lens with IS, all around the stabilization is GREAT !!! I have been hearing the stabilization on the S5 isn't as good as the GH5.. Can anybody confirm or deny this claim...?!
Generally that what Ive heard from the reviews Ive watched. It is a bit better than the other FF cameras tho.
Looks like they’ve finally did a full frame GH5 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
That's exactly what they did
Can Panasonic just make a deal with Olympus to use their autofocus system. This tracking plus their AF tech would be perfect
Is there a way to record 4 channels of audio simultaniously if you use the flash socket XLR-adapter? Or is it limited to 2ch either via 3.5mm jack OR the XLR-Adapter? Thanks
I would love to see an updated S5 video with the Raw output and new features! This may be the camera I'll upgrade to depending on the A74.
The ALTSON EF-L Mount Converter enables the use of Canon EF-mount lenses on L-mount
mirrorless camera bodies, and maintains full lens performance, including autofocus in AF-S
mode, as well as in-camera correction and image stabilization technologies.
Are you working on an S5 guide? If I am to learn all there is to know about this camera, I feel you are the person to go to. Seriously take my $80 🤘🏼
Have had a couple of Lumix cameras and have been considering a switch back to Sony, but the S5 is very tempting. Thanks for the excellent review!
What is pixel to pixel...? Is it like the teleconvert mode of the GH5?
No Downscaling...Just enough pixels for the resolution being filmed.
Oh man...what a great year for cameras, and at this price point the S5 might be the go-to for me.
Hey Caleb, what are your thoughts on the GH5ii vs the S5?
Seems promising, but I REALLY want a GH6
if it ever comes...
Yeah I want one to but I kinda want a new camera now, Il save a bit of money then see whats out. Hoping the GH6 will come out by then... :(
Wow at last a *MICRO FULL FRAME* is born ♡
I'm camera shopping and your video was super helpful!! Thanks 🙂
i'm looking forward to S5mk2. hope they will improve processing power to give 4k60 10bit 422 with no record limit (and a Full-sized HDMI). that's all I ask!
Would love to learn more about how to use it well.
awesome, quick and very informative review as always!
Seems like a solid camera. Panasonic is really good at listening to the room (their customers) This has me even more excited about the GH6. If they gave the GH6 all of these same video features, and only made the auto-focus perfect, I would be more than happy to upgrade from my GH5 and GH5S.
I think the GH5 is still better for video than the S5, even if only because of the 400mbps ALL-I recording
The GH6 needs to be at least on par with the a7s3
You’re my best reviewer man!
I have a question: Does it work with the Tokina 11-20mm F2.8 Lens? I use it with the GH5 with the Viltrox EF-M2 Speedbooster adapter. Many Thanks
Amazing video Caleb, extremely helpful!
it would be awesome if Panasonic would make a MFT camera with similar set of features, and just smaller resolution (and even a bit smaller body)
It would probably help the af aswell as it works better in apsc mode.
what do you think between S5 and BMPCC6k for video? I was going to get the BM, but decided to go with S5 once it was announced.
Outstanding overview and review. Really am thinking this is a FF GH5 or close to it. I’m really tempted on this.
The S5 is on sale right now for $1500 which seems like a steal. Ive been a photographer for 17 years and starting to get more into video. Im a Canon guy but dont want to pay $2500 for the R6. Was looking at the G9 for $1k but saw this was on sale for $1500 right now. Tempting.
I'm really trying to figure out what the catch is. How is this camera so cheap but better than more expensive ones in a lot of ways?
I am looking at either purchasing this camera or the R6. Auto Focus isn't the most important to me but aside from that they have very similar features. What would you recommend and why?
wow such good camera .. Hello sir I have sony a7iii . do u think this is worth upgrade from sony a7iii to panasonic S5 ?? i love sony a7siii but this camera is expensive .. pls suggest me
Great video!
Tracking doesn’t work for me - face or animal. Anyone know what I’m doing wrong?
Thanks for this review. As a Sony A7iii user i feel lack of 10 bit recording in 4k in my camera. Autofocus in Panasonic is in my opinion the weakest feature - still worth to think about the transition to S5 :) Thanks Again!
That camera would be a great upgrade to my G7. If I understand correctly I can choose the crop of the camera? Because I enoy the MFT crop for super-telephoto wildlife video, so being able to crop in would be super helpful, while still having better low light performance than the G7
LUMIX S5 VIDEO SHOOTERS PSA:
Issue: Glitchy, pixelated lines in the image when using HDMI.
Hi Caleb, if you to choose between this camera and the gh5s which one would you buy?
Great review, thanks for that!
Can you tell what gear did you use for this video? Camera and lens especially.
I want to shoot events like theater play or concerts in a low light conditions. I will use gimbal and tripod. GH5S Vs S5? Thanks.
Hey Celeb! Are you planning on doing a camera course for the Lumix S5 over on the academy? I am looking into the a7iv or the S5 and wanted to get the best out of whichever camera I choose. Love your content, it always feels worthwhile and helpful. You rock!
Thx for this video. I have also S5 but what is maximum lens weight for S5 ? Actually, the real question is: Does a heavy lens damage the body?
Caleb! What mic did you use when you were vlogging? Sounded great’ LOVED the vid 💪🏻
Looks stunning! I’m still leaning toward a Canon mirrorless. What do you think about the full frame lenses for Panasonic?
Liked seeing the studio space, Caleb! Have you done a tour/explanation for the setups you have there?
