People who understand Panasonic cameras can get decent autofocus out of the latest models. It isn't as snappy as Canon or Sony in continuous AF, but is perfectly usable with the right tweaks, and in single shot is as good as virtually anything around. It's as if the only judgement on a new camera release is how well it vlogs out of the box. From a Canon, Fuji and Panasonic owner.

I think for those this Camera is aimed at it really delivers, the Feature Set and overall Software Design are wonderful and for typical "GH5 workloads" it is absolutely a massive improvement in AF Performance, curiously enough factory settings tend not to give it optimum performance though. I think any Purchase is a trade-off, The S5 plays in the same league as much more expensive bodies, except when it comes to fast-moving Video Situations that require ultra-responsive AF, I personally feel that Tradeoff is well-worth it. In fact, even in fluent situations, there are two things that massively improve AF Performance: not shooting in V-Log and switching from Full Sensor to APS-C mode. TL;DR: As long as you don't plan on shooting a lot of fast-moving situations AF will work just fine.
I’ve been a professional videographer for over 10 years. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve filmed using autofocus. Yes it’s nice to have but judging from the comments, everyone is a vlogger and not a commercial videographer. This looks like a lovely little camera but I’m still leaning towards the S1H for my GH5s upgrade.
Cine cameras don't have autofocus (rarely). None of my cameras have ever had autofocus, cant say I missed having it tbh. don't see what the fuss is about

Carl Kim it is nice to have both. I have the X-T3 now and I’m happy with Fujis Autofocus system. I just know in certain situations manual focus would be more beneficial and I think it’s a skill we should all learn.
@@AlisterMalcolm Manual focus is ok if you have monitors. I just started full time as a videographer and manual focusing on the tiny ass a7s2 screen is soooooo hard. Everything is soft even when peaking says it's in focus. And I'm given like 2 lenses, one of which is a Canon EF 70-200 adapted on MC-11. The stupid focus throw is like 3mm from 6m to infinity. Idk how I'm supposed to use it.
At this rate they might as well stuff it in a box like the Z-cam and make it professional cinema camera. Not like the autofocus will improve in the next 5 years.

Interesting choice to make the body smaller. Personally I'd have liked them to keep the body at GH5 size, and leave more space for improved IBIS...why...
a7iii and s5 are exact inverse of each other. a7iii just made sure the basic features are there while abandoning premium feature, pani boy on the other hand... oh boy!!
we’re to expect a new line of models from the most prominent manufacturers, perhaps a few cheaper models, with specific focus on full-frame and having a flip-screen, leaning towards the trend of “working from home”
Full frame GH5 that's also excellent for photography for the same launch price, really sad for those who are unable to turn a wheel on their 50$ lens and need a 1000$ lens to do the work for them :/ It's an "actually competent videographer" dream camera

Good review! You always really put it to the test. Being a Lumix G9 user, this could be the next step into full frame. Hopefully the AF will improve with a future update.
After watching this video, you guys are great, and after examining in detail the AF, it seems that 4k60p does pretty well and for the most part, is really decent. I won't be running all over the place like you guys, but seeing the video for a second time, I think I will get this camera.
I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.
Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐
Great review! Finally a full frame budget friendly “hybrid” camera that does what we need it to. Not lacking a flip out screen, 10 bit, or 4K 60. Oh and doesn’t over heat.

Is there any way to check focus while recording. I feel like this is a deal breaker for me. I have been a Sony shooter for the last 8 years and i'm entertaining the idea of the S5 due to the 10bit recording and low cost of the camera. I can live without AF as I'm quite comfortable manual focusing, but no magnification assist while recording....yikes

What we needed was Panasonic to buy out Olympus for the Phase detect, in conjunction with future ToF that Panasonic is working on. Olympus could have worked on the photo work and Panasonic could have worked on the video work. They could have also combined the OIS systems so that all the future lenses would work interchanably w/ eachother in dual IS.
But complain about autofocus because people listen to other TH-camrs complaining Im using the g7 and I shoot manually I do. Want to upgrade in de near future
Interesting camera - but with its obviously not Canon or Sony auto-focus and a mini-HDMI port, it's still priced like a R6 or Sony A7C (rumored). I'd like to have seen a more aggressive price here from panny, something like $1500. As it is, it looks like a wait and see about new over-heating firmware upgrades for the R6 or a similarly featured A7C (which would have access to much more native glass). Just so bizarre that Panasonic can't nail down auto-focus....
I remember everyone was complaining about AF in 4K from M50 and RP. It's the same as in Panasonic - contrast detect. If you can tap on a screen and a camera will focus in that area, that's good enough for me. 5s - S5.. makes sense :D
I dunno, autofocus may be just one aspect but for video work it's a critical aspect. I can't imagine why in 2020 I'd ever chose this camera for my video work over something like the Sony A73 which is a cheap workhorse that does it all reliably.

I got a questionn regarding using 50/60fps. Why dont you use that frame with 1/50th ss? WOuldn't it give the same motion blur effect as when using 24fps at 1/50th?
You understand it wrong, the Rule of thumb about 180º shutter rule for getting cinematic motion blur is double the shutter speed per frame rate so 2 ss * 1/framerate (2ss * 1fps). if you have a 24fps you get 1/48 ss or 1/50th since most non-cine camera don't offer 1/48th if you have 50 fps you get 1/100 or 1/125th ss or " ". if you have 60 fps you get 1/120 or 1/125th ss if you have 120fps you get 1/250th ss so if you meant to get the motion blur same as the 24fps then you should double the your shutter in regards to what Fps you're shooting on.
I think they want to strongarm you into using it the way the panasonic engineers envisioned and not the way that is the most intuitive and natural for most people.
Due to patent issue, sony and Canon holds the Autofocus System patent may it be face/animal detection and pixel based detection instead of contrast. If Panasonic would patent that, that would likely put a higher price tag on their camera, they can't also just copy that coz it would be plagiarism, but even so I still dream it if the price is the same as Sony or Canon or even a bit higher I'd still pull the trigger, Panasonic has the nicest color science and codec I've encountered, only the bad autofocus are pulling them down.
The "focus" during the intro segment was disorienting. I know the issues with the autofocus system on this camera (I'm writing this in 2023 and a lot has been said about it), and I'm wondering if firmware updates have helped over the years. I realize it's the same AF system.

We heard in several reviews that the autofocus performance is reduced when recording externally with hdmi.
I'm not sure you can call it a review when they dont' mention this.
If Panasonic fix the autofocus issue and give you something a little close like Sony this can be a really good camera

Comments: "focus is shit "
In another review I watched they said they were asked to test AF without an external screen.
Lucky on youtube there is a good mix of "entertainment" based reviewers mixed with competent reviewers.
Look forward to testing it myself.
Pity it's L mount. Can't seem to find many well-made lens mount adapters for it (M42 screw mount, Nikon F mount, Canon EF mount, Sony E mounts etc). :(
I got a questionn regarding using 50/60fps. Why dont you use that frame with 1/50th ss? WOuldn't it give the same motion blur effect as when using 24fps at 1/50th?
You understand it wrong, the Rule of thumb about 180º shutter rule for getting cinematic motion blur is double the shutter speed per frame rate so 2 ss * 1/framerate (2ss * 1fps).
if you have a 24fps you get 1/48 ss or 1/50th since most non-cine camera don't offer 1/48th
if you have 50 fps you get 1/100 or 1/125th ss or " ".
if you have 60 fps you get 1/120 or 1/125th ss
if you have 120fps you get 1/250th ss
so if you meant to get the motion blur same as the 24fps then you should double the your shutter in regards to what Fps you're shooting on.

96MP high resolution mode would be pretty good for my copy stand.
S5 is really good at focus if properly exposed, low or inconsistent light, forget it.
Just don't know why they can't fix the autofocus issues on their cameras. All that technology in their cameras and they just can't get it right.
I think they want to strongarm you into using it the way the panasonic engineers envisioned and not the way that is the most intuitive and natural for most people.
Due to patent issue, sony and Canon holds the Autofocus System patent may it be face/animal detection and pixel based detection instead of contrast. If Panasonic would patent that, that would likely put a higher price tag on their camera, they can't also just copy that coz it would be plagiarism, but even so I still dream it if the price is the same as Sony or Canon or even a bit higher I'd still pull the trigger, Panasonic has the nicest color science and codec I've encountered, only the bad autofocus are pulling them down.
The "focus" during the intro segment was disorienting. I know the issues with the autofocus system on this camera (I'm writing this in 2023 and a lot has been said about it), and I'm wondering if firmware updates have helped over the years. I realize it's the same AF system.
Thanks Kai, but i hate video stuff cluttering up my stills cameras...
That auto focus is really the only reason why I chose the xt4 over this.
