I just shot a feature film with an open box deal, 1,200 bucks, S5. The only strange thing about this camera is what you get for the price. I shot into the Ninja V, so I was getting 422, 12 bit, 5.9k RAW...at FULL frame. I was a big fan of GH4 and 5's, loved them, but it has to be said, comparing M4/3rds to Full frame is like comparing poetry to the phone book. Put good glass on this little baby and you will have to spend 70k on an Alexa to see any difference, ...(oh, the color science on this and the S1H comes from the Alexa, my bad.) For a filmmaker, unless you need a global shutter for action sequences, I can't see why you would need any other camera. I am now editing the film. It is a piece of crap, but...it looks fecking wonderful!
Could be a bit wider, but loving it as well. Just a bit wider! For vlogging. And getting on the damn videomicro is a pain. Ignored that last trip, ruined 80% of my footage with wind noise. Oh well know next time, always external mic and dead cat.

@@TripleVR At the moment, the only Komodos in the wild are the preordered beta versions which have been a target of much derision. The Komodo isn't going to hit the shelves for a little while yet. Gerald doesn't seem to have the connections with RED that would allow him to get a review copy, so he would either have to borrow a beta version from someone, or wait until they are available from a rental house.
Awesome review. You're the best and most exhaustive (and exhausting technical) reviewer EVER! You just need to talk faster---just a suggestion. But, please, let me give you a BIG thanks for giving us poor, neglected fully manual, 3rd party, non-electronic linear focus lens video shooters just a few seconds of your review by mentioning that the S5 does not immediately KILL focus peaking once you hit record--like the S1 did. For me it was a deal breaker! Sadly, Panasonic still does not provide the ability to punch in to check focus during recording (like the Sony and Fuji), but still that's an enormous help just not to lose the peaking. In addition, the coming DCI firmware update makes this a formidable video machine---the FF GH5 so many of us wanted----with better color than Sony. This camera may be the best feature set for the price ever! Thank you so much!!
Thanks for your review. As an S1 owner I have to say I still prefer it for video, I am sure others will go crazy for the RAW but all I care about is good 422. Amazing to see this handle heat so well beyond what it is rated compared to recent canon models, and can't wait for the new AF updates to backport to my S1. I think this thing will be dope for someone who hasnt bought into l mount yet and wants to jump in or as a b cam to someone with an s1h
@@carter_is_here S5 feels better in the hands, has more intuitive designs, cleaner high speed frame rates, and is much more functional for filmmaking in my opinion.
@@zerkorj Yeah it you're running a whole crew. 95% of people using lower end cameras like this dont have that. Plus they added better focus on the mark ii version.
@@QUINPANO I'm shooting 80% alone 20% with a crew I never use autofocus. I think it also depend on what you're filming. For the Mark II like someone Saïd in another comment S5 II has fixed pattern noise issues due to the phase detect sensors on the camera sensor
Thank you. Your info is invaluable and your unique delivery is attention-grabbing. I purchased this camers kit for work and so far am loving it. Yes video focus is a thing but if you shoot content that's is less dynamic it's a great kit.
Indeed - one of the few things that can never be fixed in post (except by cutting), is focus. So anyone that doesn't focus old school manual, runs the risk of not documenting whatever they are filming. My thoughts much like with the Canon R5 - if you are professional and it takes two cameras to feel secure about using professionally - they need to be cheap enough to warrant buying two. R5, you need two to continue shooting, by switching them out. And with this camera, apparently you need two to be running simultaneously, so that you have something to cut to when the focus goes soft. Good review, Gerald. At some point, with my mountain of old cameras ( GH4, A7s, A6300, Canon EX350 etc. ) I will eventually be replacing them, and start my personal museum. Having your videos on here is a resource for me to make as good a decision as possible. This is priceless. Thank you for that.
Well, considered I never used an autofocus for the past 8 years, I'm getting this one. I loved the S1 look, but it really was too big, so this S5 seems perfect to me.
Actually, as a 4-year user of Lumix products, I find the S5 and S1 to be very different cameras. The HDMI connection, lack of top plate display and possibly less tank-like construction totally make the S1 more suitable for professional use. It's worth the extra money in my opinion. Personally, I want the S5. After I get an S1H and S1R. I think it would make a fantastic street and travel camera for personal and professional use. For the price and features, you get about 85%'sh of what the big brothers offer. But that last 15% is a real difference for the professional stills and video shooter. And like other things in life, that difference is worth the price difference. I think Panasonic has done a great job of segmenting their camera line.
Thought about preordering the S5 but also just got the tamron 17-28mm for the sony. Might have to save up for a year to buy the siii. Even though I would've honestly loved! The s5 with that kit lense 20-60mm it's a vlogging dream lol
From the specs I saw of the S5, I thought it might actually be something to invest in adding to my filmmaking gear. But...the AF is still as unreliable as ever. Killing any further consideration. Anyway, thanks for your usual thorough and in-depth review.
Great video - but I feel like it's a bit unfair to label it primarily as "strange" in the title just because of how they didn't nerf its features much compared to the S1. That's a good thing, and should be encouraged - yet "strange" has a negative connotation.
For stills, without tracking, this camera is one of the best around. The lack of AA filter and the thin filter glass, sensor quality and colour science is one of the best on the market. Video is awesome. Tracking AF for video has been much improved but as most professional videographers shoot manual its a mute point. Video functionality, including unlimited records and no overheat makes this so amazing. At its current discount levels for one of the sharpest FF cameras about, its a bargain. The cherry on the top are the lenses. The extent of Sigma, Panasonic and Leica lenses available for the L-mount make is the second best lens selection IMHO after Sony E-mount.
Great review! One more in-depth than others I've seen. I think this would be the perfect Film Student/Indy Camera. With the price point over the SONY a7S III making all these 'higher end' functions available at a lower price point... and with waveforms, V-log, Anamorphic(?!) + Timecode... I feel this is the perfect small indy film camera. The in body stabilization is good enough... Film students need to learn how to use cameras without image stabilization (using traditional rigs, tripods and steadycams) and the poor auto-focus only reinforces that a student must learn the skills of manual rack focusing. Thanks! Camera bought!
Awesome video! (...and I'm not just saying that because I'm in it! 😄) I was shocked to learn that the S5 is smaller than the GH5!! I remember the GH5 feeling so small in my hands! All these small changes over the years are so gradual it's hard to notice unless you do a side-by-side comparison.
I heard the same s5 autofocus updates are being applied to the s1 and s1h shortly with firmware. I'm curious if we will see more firmware updates from Panasonic also??
Hating on spraying and praying is a pretty elitist view imo. Sure, fewer photos saves battery life and time to go through your photos, but if the keeper rate becomes the same as on a system with better AF, then just go with what works.
Great in-depth review again full of practical info, I'm considering this camera as my s1h with a big honking lens is so heavy I barely use it for travel stuff or on gimbals. I like and appreciate Panasonic for consistently including features that canon and sony leave off their cameras in the same price range but include for $2-12k more. I'm so sick of having to sell cameras every year to avoid losing a ton of money and these reviews really help my decision-making process. I don't really want more than 6k but the new fuji with the medium format sensor is compelling, hope you get one of those to review!
Great video, will you be testing the 6k raw and the other things added in the new update. To see how much better it is now... Keep up the great work...
Excellent review. As a GH5 shooter, I was very interested in what you had to say about the S5. I think I'll stick with my beloved GH5 for now. Also.... "I'm Gerald Undone, and I deep dive into every aspect of my life. EVERY aspect...."
Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐
Great review Gerald. The most important thing on any camera is auto focus and here this is a deal breaker for me. This will affect low light performance more as well, which again is a real pain. Panasonic have the means to sort this so there's no excuse really.
I recently bought this camera, but with a 24-70 2.8 Sigma Art as the main allround lens and a Sigma 50mm 1.4 for other stuff. So far I'm quite happy with it, still in the process of getting to know the camera. When I got it, it felt very small in my rather large hands, so I added the battery grip, which makes the handling a lot easier.
And still their crappy contrast AF… In your vlogging test, Gerald, your face was soft and out of focus like 60%… And my goodness that first AF test of a cube - that was soo painful and took forever for S5 to focus… Really pathetic job, Panasonic! Abandon this garbage AF finally and do what every other manufacturer has been doing for yeas now: phase-detect AF! Otherwise no Panasonic camera, at least for me! But amazing tests as usual, Gerald! Thank you a lot!
@@karthik2166 Agreed, Panny does give ALOT for the money when compared to Canon and Sony...but I'd gladly pay a little more for real AF and frankly the industry standard is phase detect at this point...so time for Panny to up the game!
@@whiterock1865 yeah i don't get it either. i am pretty sure they got the feedback about their AF. right now AF is the only drawback of this camera. is it like expensive to switch to PDAF or do panasonic lack the technology to implement PDAF.
@@karthik2166 Agreed!!! It is the only thing where they are lagging...otherwise they give so much for the money the cameras are amazingly generous...just need to update the AF. Well I don't know all about the patents etc, but if they didn't develop their own flavor they could certainly license it.
idk why everyone complains about Panasonic AF so much, I’ve been using the gh line for years and it honestly rarely gives me problems...they still make the best value robust cameras anyone could ask for ESP for video
AF isn't an issue for me so I was liking the spec of this camera as a FF upgrade to the GH5. Disappointing to hear the IBIS isn't as good though, plus the few other quirks like no all-intra and dropping to 8 bit on certain settings. Hmmm. I don't think I'm quite convinced but I keep the faith that Panasonic will pull something out the bag this year! Excellent review as ever though, really thorough. Thank you.
I'm not sure if you are aware, when you record a static scene the battery run time is at it's best. When recording a consistently changing scene the camera does much more work encoding new images per frame and that is how you get a better estimate of battery run time. When you have the camera writing the same image over and over again, it doesn't get stressed as much.
If Panasonic ever get their AF system to mimic what Sony and Canon are doing and build a solid lens selection then they make take Nikon's market share. Great video 👌
I don't know about everyone else, but the S5 has everything I need to make what I want. Only downside is the autofocus being... Panasonic's autofocus. I'm saving up for it and should be able to get it at the end of the year, working two jobs has been hell but it's worth it. I don't care about autofocus much since I just connect through the app and focus manually anyway on my GX85.
From what I have observed, S5 seems to be an APS-C camera that is doing its best to be a full frame camera. Just not there yet. Sony a73 on the other hand has well established a main feature that should not be treated as secondary which is the auto focus. The 10bit recording was suppose to be the dagger but failed to deliver considering how auto focus could be a deal braker to some.
@𝙹𝚎𝚛𝙸𝚖𝙸𝚊𝚑 Not entirely what I mean. What I am trying to say is panasonic is the one making the S5 more of an APSC camera by the way they limit the features. Its like all the good features are only available through a cropped sensor and the full frame is like a snippet where you can still use but have been limited for some reason. Considering how their autofocus system acts like it requires a large processor to function properly.
If I understood only 1/4 of what you know, I could make a good decision about which budget/prosumer video camera best fits my needs. I’m subscribing to your channel because it’s no-nonsense. Thanks!
Panasonic refusing to go with a better AF system is what will cause many to leave them, including myself. Stinks, because I love their cameras otherwise.
As an owner of the S1, I had hope that perhaps AF could be improved with updates, but if this is what they call state of the ART, then I’m officially done with Panasonic. I even invested in native glass.
@@dausherryanddhy9508 Body + Glass is a double blow. Too bad because Panasonic made great cameras my fav being the GH5 and of course there will never be a GH6.
Paul C I came from the GH4. Till this day, I still consider it revolutionary for its time. Was thinking about upgrading to the GH5, but I was so content with my GH4, that by the time I was ready to move on, they announced the S1, so I went with it instead. However, this time, competition is strong with Nikon and Canon getting in the game, pushing even Sony to step up. This competition may infact cause the GH6 to possibly never come. If the S5 releases at $2k, the GH6 would have to be around $1700 and even entry level full frame mirrorless can be found for that price. I just don’t see Panasonic lasting too long outside their hardcore user base.
Paul C whoa whoa easy, gh6 is coming soon. Hybrid(gh6), new video oriented camera that will replace gh5s(gh6v), and the third will be for photography with 40mp or something.
I think panasonic DFD was ok on the FZ1000, small sensor with lots of depth of field, but is painful to watch from a full frame camera on a large screen TV
Very counter intuitive for me to go with the S5 over the s1 regarding the specs, but having chose the s5 I would say the size, weight and ergonomics are perfect for a mirrorless camera for me, using FF no longer involves compromising on these details and while phase detect provides a superior AF in the S5ii I do feel for a mid range camera it still meets and goes way beyond what I ask of it.
Panasonic are an all out company, they’re in for the long haul and not the short game, they don’t play consumer politics the way some other brands do, they don’t treat their customers as if they were born yesterday either. Now i’m no vlogger, I watch Gerald’s channel because, well he’s a great at what he does. I shoot stills, but one thing I see in Lumix cameras is that they are veritable sweet shops once you dive into them, and are not only full of goodies but shelf space for future development in tech. As far as autofocus goes, well I get the videographer frustrations but with a company like Panasonic I just think that they will crack that autofocus nut very soon, long haul, for you guys as they pretty much have for still shooters. Panasonic will make fast and big firmware strides with this camera unlike some, you’ll be very glad you have an S5 very soon or you’ll wish you had one ...👍

@@TripleVR At the moment, the only Komodos in the wild are the preordered beta versions which have been a target of much derision. The Komodo isn't going to hit the shelves for a little while yet. Great video as always. You always tests the features that are rarely mentioned in others' videos. Which is why I love your videos so much.
I'd be tempted by the s5 but currently there's a deal where I can buy the s1 for £300 less than the s5. No brainer.
SFV carries the fgc.
Image quality out of the s5 is hands down better than the s1. Having worked with both on projects there’s really no comparison

The search for perfect autofocus is like needing the pick-up truck to haul the boat you'll never own.
@@Clickumentary are you implying that people who are obsessed with autofocus don't make good content? 😂 oof
I'm a teacher and am curious how you were as a student. I think I'd enjoy you. Always nice having a sharp student.
Gerald you are a top the range you tuber Vlogger, loving your channel more and more. We can just trust what you say, you’re the real thing. Thanks.
Gerald Undone is the only review I need! Always great and on point.
Now, I will watch this review once again😁
Does the S5 have the '4K Live Cropping' and 'Focus Transition' features from the GH5? Great review as always!
Thought about preordering the S5 but also just got the tamron 17-28mm for the sony. Might have to save up for a year to buy the siii. Even though I would've honestly loved! The s5 with that kit lense 20-60mm it's a vlogging dream lol
finally someone made a good review. thank you for all the hard work ❤
From the specs I saw of the S5, I thought it might actually be something to invest in adding to my filmmaking gear. But...the AF is still as unreliable as ever. Killing any further consideration. Anyway, thanks for your usual thorough and in-depth review.
Get a follow focus and build a lil rig 😉
Clicked immediately, looking forward to hearing your thoughts
All these small changes over the years are so gradual it's hard to notice unless you do a side-by-side comparison.
this is my current dream camera for my budget
Brilliant where are you based

I heard the same s5 autofocus updates are being applied to the s1 and s1h shortly with firmware. I'm curious if we will see more firmware updates from Panasonic also??

Are you excited yet? S5ii✨
“Spraying and praying” Typical Panny autofocus.
“If autofocus isn’t 9 out of 10 then it’s basically a zero.”
Because they still use contrast detect with DFD
Agree, give us phase detection af and I'm selling my Sony
Hating on spraying and praying is a pretty elitist view imo. Sure, fewer photos saves battery life and time to go through your photos, but if the keeper rate becomes the same as on a system with better AF, then just go with what works.
Would you recommend S5 for TH-cam one man army setup for product reviews/vlogs?
Sony A7S iii please, nice try Panasonic but now we have flippy screens, 10 bit, high frame rates and ibis. Thank you Gerald, we love your videos.
If you were to choose now for weddings what you would buy: Panasonic s5 or Sony a7 III? Thanks

"I'm Gerald Undone, and I deep dive into every aspect of my life. EVERY aspect...."
Oh man I really hope they have a shutter angle firmware upgrade for the s1 as well. That would be amazing.
Thanks 😐
Outstanding review, thanks. I'm still clinging to my MFT kit. I can see where the market is going though.
Great review Gerald. The most important thing on any camera is auto focus and here this is a deal breaker for me. This will affect low light performance more as well, which again is a real pain. Panasonic have the means to sort this so there's no excuse really.
So if Panasonic and Sony had a baby...
PanaSony, the one to rule them all?
AD Blackmagic to it they have good menu and a real big Screen and better codecs BRAW is supreme
Of course, there is the risk that it would be off-colour and unfocussed ;p
Gerald undone is actually the best and very very well media trained... he probably never did media training and this just him RAW AND UNDONE 😏😏
got this camera after your review. thanks for the in depth view
And still their crappy contrast AF… In your vlogging test, Gerald, your face was soft and out of focus like 60%… And my goodness that first AF test of a cube - that was soo painful and took forever for S5 to focus…
Really pathetic job, Panasonic! Abandon this garbage AF finally and do what every other manufacturer has been doing for yeas now: phase-detect AF! Otherwise no Panasonic camera, at least for me!
But amazing tests as usual, Gerald! Thank you a lot!
as much as i hate their AF, this camera still gives a lot for 2000$
@@karthik2166 Agreed, Panny does give ALOT for the money when compared to Canon and Sony...but I'd gladly pay a little more for real AF and frankly the industry standard is phase detect at this point...so time for Panny to up the game!

@@itsjohnrice Just enjoy it buddy, it's a fantastic camera...don't think to buy cameras as an investment.
idk why everyone complains about Panasonic AF so much, I’ve been using the gh line for years and it honestly rarely gives me problems...they still make the best value robust cameras anyone could ask for ESP for video
Paul C Panasonic have not and will not abandon mft www.diyphotography.net/stay-tuned-says-panasonic-director-the-gh6-is-coming/
Paul C whoa whoa easy, gh6 is coming soon. Hybrid(gh6), new video oriented camera that will replace gh5s(gh6v), and the third will be for photography with 40mp or something.
Pleasure to listen to someone with your amazing knowledge. Thankyou.
I think panasonic DFD was ok on the FZ1000, small sensor with lots of depth of field, but is painful to watch from a full frame camera on a large screen TV
I’m tempted just for a 20-60 lens - such a useful range
Thank you for your fantastic reviews. Very helpful :-)
Amazing content as always! By far my fav TH-camr
