    Great review as always guys, but just one thing which deserves way more attention...
    It’s the only full frame camera at that price point with high-res mode. I can’t stress how much of a game changer for anyone who shoots stationary objects, products, interiors etc it is, and eliminates the need to buy a more expensive higher res camera. That feature alone makes this SUCH good value.
    I’ve got an S1R and the high res mode is just incredible. Way better than Sony.
    I actually switched from Sony to L-Mount because Sigma were making the only interesting reasonably priced glass on E-mount... And the S1R is the best built mirrorless camera by far.
    I don’t shoot people or wildfire so don’t care about the AF.
    Anyway, stop shooting landscapes with trees and water to test the high-res feature! That’s not what it’s for and you’re not doing it justice!

    Panasonic makes great cameras, they push the big boys in specs and features. They support their cameras forever introducing new features well into a cameras life cycle, which makes me appreciate the way they do business. I would happily buy more of their cameras if they would FIX THE FREAKING AUTOFOCUS!!

    I will never understand why Panasonic deliberately refuses to incorporate phase detection in their newer cameras. By doing that they are hurting no-one else but themselves. They are making cameras that have so many wonderful features but that really are worthless without a solid and totally reliable continuous AF system.
    PS: Of course I am only referring to shooting videos and not to photography.

    Picked up a used S1R with 2500 shots for only $1650. I was an APSC shooter (Pentax and Fuji) and the DPR videos on the Panasonic FF models convinced me to go with Lumix. I shoot portraits, do some street and some landscape photography and the DFD focusing has been spot on for me!

    Have been a G85 user for 5 years seriously considering the S5 as an upgrade for it's video features and most importantly it's probably the best bargain for a full frame camera! The auto focus for me is not a big deal as I mostly use manual focus and what I love about Panasonic is the consistent firmware updates and how they continually support their older cameras even the G85 which is probably 6 or 7 years old now since it's first release! My G85 just keeps getting better even the auto focus with every new firmware update and I know the S5 will have that same support.

    Jordan,
    If the output level on your your active audio device is too hot for -12dB it is not necessary to go out and buy the XLR1 accessory. Just use the s5’s built in line level input option. That’s what it’s there for.

    Guys, speaking of the notoriously sloppy face/eye tracking AF-C on Lumix cameras...have you ever tried pressing the joystick after subject face has been tracked (or touched it on the screen)? This will change the square graphic slightly, and the focusing accuracy will GREATLY improve, in still but also movie mode. This is strange, no mention in the manuals...it's working on the S5 but also on my G9. Your take? Thank you.

    quick note that you're incorrect on the IBIS. It's actually slightly "worse" than the other panasonic cams because of the size. i think it's 5 or 5.5 stops.
    Also i love the colors on these S cams. Something about how they render greens and blues (and skin) is just so delicious.

    • @FuzeDzn
      @FuzeDzn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The IBIS on its own is 5 stops, however with the Dual I.S it is 6.5 stops... Considering all of the current Panasonic L mount lenses feature IS other than the new 20-60mm

    Comparisons S1H and S5 video focus (from 6:50 minute) is made with different aperture (F/4.0 for 1H and F/5.6 for C5).
    S5 at this point have much bigger depth field, which makes autofocus system less sensitive as a result, background magnification changes will be less visible.
    In few words with bigger depth field autofocus system less changing focus or not changing at all.
    Second thing, which can also have the influence on results, is the distance to the main object. You can see that test with C5 was made bigger distance on which depth field will be also bigger.
    So both factors, which can have, influence on background magnification changes looks like helps S5 looks better.

    SOLD! my Purchase Order for the S5 is in.
    I am taking a lot more video these days and the S5 is the perfect camera for this. Way beyond what one could have imagined even a few years ago.
    Features, size, quality and value is just unbeatable.
    I started taking photos 45 years ago when all SLR's were manual focus. So getting the S5 to focus will not be an issue. I think that people see that the autofocus is not perfect and fob the camera off as worthless. That's never the case and you may just have to work a little harder to find out how to get the focus when and how you want it. I am not into sports photography so no issue here.
    "Modern photographers" are too precious these days are not willing to work for their shots. People just want the equivalent of an instamatic these days and buy sophisticated DSLRs so they can call themselves a professional arteest.
    OK now let's do the maths.
    Th Panasonic S5 here in the land of OZ is selling RRP for $3,199.
    For $500 more you will get the 20-60mm lens kit. The 20-60mm lens is selling individually for $1,099. Plus if purchased before the end of Sept you can redeem the Sigma 45mm lens valued at approx $900.
    The S5 with the two lenses comes to $3,699 [US$2,692] and you are getting $2,000 worth of lenses. Therefore you are only really paying $1,699 [US$1,236] for the S5 body.
    I was able to get another hundred dollars off the deal which makes it even sweeter.
    Where in the world would find such amazing value for such a great kit?
    In years to come when the S5 is an antique, you can always sell or pass on the body to someone else and keep the L glass.
    People this purchase is a no brainer.

      @artyrichman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      While the autofocus is not as fast as the A7III with moving subjects, the advantage of DFD is a better and sharper picture with less banding and ghosting. Give me the S5 anytime!

    • @GordLamb
      @GordLamb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@artyrichman nothing to do with speed, though; the problem with DFD / CDAF is that it doesn't know if the focal plane is in front of or behind the subject. Causes it to hunt back and forth, and there's really no way to work around it. You simply need two observation points. The problem with Panasonic cameras in video CAF is that you just can't trust them. I say this as an owner of my beloved G9, which I do love. It's frustrating.

    Thoughts on this and the a7SIII? I've been using Panasonic since GH4 and I now have two GH5's, GH5S and S1H and I clearly like their image quality, but the AF always lacked. Now that Sony is catching up, and superseding in specs are you guys sticking with Panasonic for your videos or will you start using the Sony?
    Thinking about switching, I tried with the a7RIII but didn't love the video of it, but things look to have improved now. And having the same lenses to use for larger cinema systems like the upcoming FX6 that sounds very very tempting.

    Currently the S1 is only £100 more expensive than the S5. If the older model gets the CAF update (and Raw?), it seems like the better buy.

    Superb getting this out so quick, clearly sitting on this testing for a couple of weeks. I wish they got rid of this DFD autofocus. I do wonder if the A7C is going to be better for me... lots to like here

    Good video and good testing, with many good questions answered.
    One remark though... Are you becoming more "serious" in your attitudes recently?? I'm missing the introduction joke and your usual swearing guys 😁
    Make sure you carry on with your funly-serious tests. That's how we love you guys! 😉

    So you said Panasonic is also rolling out the AF Updates to the S1 series via firmware. Can you do a before and after and Vs S5? It really seems to have improved it by a significant margin (tho not still there). I haven't yet seen anyone talking about it except on your video and Webpage or Panasonics own news. I would be very interested to see how big the improvement actually is for the S1 line.

    I was hoping you'd do an IBIS test, like for the R5/R6, so we could compare them.

    Nice camera. Lens library is terrible though. Stuck with either bazooka Sigma glass or 2nd mortgage Leica glass. Its sort of ironic that Panasonic, one of the great m43's camera makers that knows how to make small, light and high performing products took this long to make the S5 (which should have been their FIRST FF camera), and also do not have any good f1.8 lightweight primes or f2.8 zooms that are smaller either. If I was shopping to get into FF, the best choice is still an A7iii followed closely by the Nikon Z6 simply due to their lens library.

    Images/footage is looking amazing. Never thought this with their mft cameras.
    Is this due to colours or there is actual diffference?

    • @pfortunato78
      @pfortunato78 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no real difference in broad daylight. Put the Noct on a GH5 and have Jordan shoot Chris and it really won't look any different than this.

      @@pfortunato78 not talking about depth of field. Dont care for it. Just general iq without pixel peeping, like how anyone would normally see it.
      It just has that wow factor. Cant say why.

    I've always enjoyed your coverage and held you guys up as mentors when I first started my channel, especially Jordan. I really wanted to get the S1 when it was announced, but Panasonic's stubborn view that DFD works is getting tiring. I'm a one man show. I want a trust worthy AF so I can focus on the subject and not if they're in focus. Do you guys have any insight why they refuse to move to phase detect?

    Can you confirm something? Jordan mentions that the 30 minute limit is in 10 bit modes, but doesn't specify whether it's just the 4k 10 bit modes or all 10 bit modes, including 1080. Are 1080 10 bit modes also limited to 30 minutes?

    I think a lot of panasonic users are wondering if there's a future for the GH line with this camera debuting. The feature set on this camera looks insane for the price point despite the terrible panasonic autofocus. It's cheaper than the GH5s when it launched and it appears to be a significantly better camera. If panasonic doesn't kill the GH line, it makes me excited to see what it has in store for MFT.

    In my own opinion the Panasonic S5 is like the full frame Panasonic GH4, Panasonic G85, Panasonic GX8, Panasonic G7, and Canon 80D and Canon 90D and Canon C100 Mark 2 rolled into one as it can do unlimited recording in 8 bit 4K and HD 1080p. In both Full Frame and Super 35. With less better Auto focus
