The best exposure video I have seen (for any camera). Great job and thank you. You kept it extremely informative without the nerdness.
I agree absolutely. Dunna is the best.
Thank you so much!!!
As someone completely new to all of this... who may have returned a Canon R50 impulse buy... after reading more about video... recognizing what hybrid camera are capable of now...
I really find this channel vital. Thank you dude.
I always shoot VLog. On point with the noise in the lower range. Great tutorial and explaination.
Nice! I appreciate the kind words, glad you liked the video!
How do you eliminate the noise when shooting in Vlog ?
This has been the most informative video I've found. Thank you for the LUT!
Thank you Dunna, much appreciated your LUT
I am a photographer with Lumix cameras (like the G9M2) and wanted to know what the heck V-log was, as I have some interest in exploring video, a little. Thank you for the quick and clear explanation and introduction to V-log.
Great video Dunna. I would add one thing….and this is preference, not right or wrong. You discussed exposing for the highlights. I personally don’t do that. I ensure exposure is correct for the subject in the scene. If the highlights are over-exposed when I do that…I don’t care. Subject gets priority over highlights. Again…neither is right or wrong. Just preference.
He said that. If you watched the whole video you would know.
Perfect! Been needing this vid for a while
Glad to hear I could help!
This was a helpful video. Thanks!
Merci pour ce retour Chris, hâte d'avoir ton retour sur le long terme, j'ai eu des soucis avec les alimentations des Zhiyun G60 et M100 qui sont les memes mais moins puissantes 😢
Have an FZ2500. I added the Vlog to the camera and have only been using it in Resolve with color management LUTs. I wasn't aware of all of the other info you have in here, only a couple of which I can't use in my camera (like waveforms). Thanks a bunch!!!!!
Very interesting episode especially setting the zebras to 95%. I’ll use that for my G9m2.
As for the Colour Space Transform and the Gamma setting, I use Gamma 2.2. This is because I have a domestic/prosumer computer monitor which is set to Gamma 2.2. And TH-cam uses Gamma 2.2 as well. Basically computer monitors, phone screens and anything else that is viewed in a bright room or outdoors uses Gamma 2.2.
The Gamma 2.4 is for very expensive Colour Grading Reference Monitors where the Colourist works in a dark environment that is perfect for Gamma 2.4.
TH-cam expects Gamma 2.2 so it is best to set your Davinci Resolve project to 2.2 and render out to Gamma 2.2.
Just look at your waveform when you switch between the different Gamma settings. You’ll be surprised.
A professional Colourists, Darren Mostyn, taught me this subtle difference.
Hi, I am using g9ii as well. Do you use only zebra 1 setting? How about exposing for people (skin tones)? I still am confused on the zebra 1+2 setting. Can you have values at the highlights and skintones at the same time with this setting??
@@johnbarrett8761 I find the two different zebras at the same time confusing and don’t use that feature. I have zebras to expose for the brightest thing in the frame as I’m filming all sorts of stuff mostly outside. I edit all my stuff using Davinci Resolve and when it comes time to adjust the exposure I look at the waveform before I increase or darken any parts of the image. If there are any people in the shot, then I would use the dropper/selection tool to find where the skin tones were on the waveform and adjust the brightness of the frame accordingly so that the skin tone sit on the correct part of the wave form.
I don’t do Studio Talking-Head stuff, but if I did then I would use zebras to expose for the skin because that is the most important subject in the frame. I would then look at the waveform in-camera to make sure no other important bright spots were clipping and adjust those physically such as dimming bright lights or drawing curtains of bright windows.
I really gotta use LOG more often, lazy many over here sometimes - thanks for this video dude!
Haha you really should! So much more flexibility!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Cheers!
😮 that's cool
Hello ! I have a question. We are filming in +1 (VLOG) , so does your LUT grading (in post prod) include a lowering of the exposure to bring back the exposure to a" normal "value? (I'm French sorry for mistakes).
Dunna, for my near future, my dream office is victorian gentleman's office. I'm not much into black and white, what could be helpful for making a scenery lighting and camera sets?
You are awesome I love your videos ❤❤❤ happy Christmas your are super awesome and I hope you have a great Christmas bye bye 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thanks, perfect timing! Just ordered an S5II with the 50 1.8 on that killer holiday sale for $1,747. Was a no brainer at that price. Love that it has the real time LUT feature. Thats going to save me lots of time in post.
DAMN!!! what a killer deal! Nice catch!
@@dunnadidit yes, the S5II is $1,700 right now and you can bundle several lenses with it for not much more. Best bang for the buck out there by far IMO
Good choice
You’re going to love it!
I did the same thing this summer but the price was still $2000 but they the lens deal and got the 35mm and 85mm 1.8 for just over $300. It was too good to pass up!

Is it possible to use the monitor lut that drops down one stop together with the Zebras as you have them set up?
Question Trying To Load LUT Camera Says LUT is not registerd Dose The Out Have to be a vlt format ?
My GH6 only lets me set the base up to 4.5 stops (80%) and the range to 1.0 which only goes up to 88% . Is there a way to still make that work for clipping?
Love that idea of making an ETTR LUT for log shooting 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It definitely makes life a lot easier!
du coup on utilise ta LUT sur notre boitier a la place du VLOG en mettant une exposition a +1 ? sur le logiciel de montage sur première pro on converti également avec ta LUT et non avec le rec 709 ?
How would you set it up for HDR grading?
The zebra settings you can use it on Lumix S5?
Great video and really helpful. Question: how useful and in which situations do you consider to use a lut in camera S5IIx (to be applied, not monitoring only), shooting in V-Log of course?
If someone were shooting something that needed to be turned around really quickly. Like, for example, sports, weddings, or quick turn around social media work! Its cool because if you have a lut that keeps it in mind, you can get some of the dynamic range improvements of LOG, but still have "useable" straight out of camera footage.
Thanks a lot, I´m going to try that!@@dunnadidit
Dang. Lumix vid doing numbers. Hope you stay with lumix.
Hey Dunnna! Finally bought the S5ii and was looking for the best videos and I came here :) Whats the LUT you have used on the clip 00:14 that girl head shot? It looks stunning!!
Hey! Thanks so much for the kind words. Likely, there wasn't a LUT used in there, I do a lot of manual grading and don't often resort to LUTS unless I'm looking for a specific look I know I can get from them or if I need to work super quickly. So chances are, it was a lot more manual tinkering than most folks would like to do.
is the zebra setting the same if your shooting in your room as well i have the s5iix with the sigma 24mm 1.4 sometimes i get this digital look how you fix that lol
Yeah the zebra setting is just to let you know when you're clipping so it stays the same no matter what you're filming.
Love the S5. How do you battle the noise in the lower end of the range? I find VLOG to be more noisy in general. On both native ISOs.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is just to expose to the right light I mentioned in the video. Try to keep the bulk of your image up out of the noisy areas of the signal. Unfortunately, noise in the dark parts is inevitable in all sensors. That being said, shooting V-LOG doesn't inherently have more noise... it only has more noise if you're trying to get something out of it that it's not equipped to get. In general, the dark parts of the image will get pushed down to where the noise wont be visible, but if you try to retain dark parts of the image that aren't reasonably retainable, you'll need some noise reduction to clean it up for sure. Hope that made sense!
dont use v log in low light.
@@dunnadidit Hi Dunna. Yes, that makes sense. I do ETTR, but still feel I very often battle noise more than I should. I guess it comes with more practice.
@@MartinAaberge depending on the look youre going for you could push the shadows down even if you crush them a little. Honestly the noise from my s5ii is more pleasing than my previous a7iv.
I wouldnt worry about it too much. You will notice it much more than the average joe watching the video will.
The way you say “out” ( “Ooot”) made me laugh. It’s the telltale giveaway of a Canadian. To be “oot” and “aboot” 😅. But great video.
😂😂😂
Does anyone know of a video where it is converted to color in Premiere pro?🙏
If I'm shooting internal Prores in V-log, then do a colour space transform, should I pick the input gamma as Apple log (because it's apple prores) or V-log?? I assumed it would be V-log but it doesn't look great..
Great question. You definitely still want to be selected on V-Log. Apple log and Apple prores are not inherently connected. ProRes is a video compression type, not a colour space. As to why it didn’t look right… if it was all set up correctly, I’m not sure what would be causing that.
I’m really new at this. Can someone explain to me why you can not choose ISO lower than 640? What is the purpose of that? My videos in daylight just get over exposed, because of that!
Good luck ❤
Does real time lut with v log change it to 8bit?
How do you eliminate the noise when shooting in Vlog ?
Be careful with the Rec-709-A output. This makes it look correct across color managed apps but will be brighter on sRGB displays. I’d probably recommend Gamma 2.2 or sRGB ( which is similar). Please correct me if I’m wrong!
Hi guys!
I have just started creating my video content. I screen recorded my PS5 gameplay in 3840 x 2160 (24 fps) and made a music video clip for TH-cam to test how it will look.
H.265 and H.264 export from DaVinci Resolve Studio with 80000 kb/s bit rate did not work for me; my video lost a lot of quality after uploading on TH-cam.
I tried different options to keep quality of the video as close to the original as possible, so I finally used QuickTime DNxHR HQX 12-bit which was optimal between quality and the file size.
But what I cannot understand is why my video, once uploaded on TH-cam, looks quite alright at 2160p and really awful at 1080p on my Laptop (on my iPhone 14 Pro Max both look good).
I thought, maybe it is typical for 4k videos to look bad at 1080p because of compression, but when I had a look at other channels, I could see that it is not completely true.
Could you please explain or give me some tips on how to choose the best raw video resolution and exporting options in my case?
Probably must your computer with then 1080p, especially if you have a high resolution image. That’s more of a resolution thing compared to needing something like raw from what I know.
Yes
Just wondering if you have or would you do a video explaining the zebra patterns in a bit more in depth - do you use zebra2 and if so how? thanks again for another great video - I've learnt so much from them!
I will definitely consider that! But for a quick answer, zebra 2 is just another level you can choose for something like middle grey or skin level if you want to have a specific level for that as well. In general I don't use it but some people do!
@@dunnadidit oh that makes sense now...I think I finally figured it out! Thanks for that! 😁
When I click the link to get the light the page seems to not be loading?
Thanks so much for the heads up! I just took a crack at fixing it so it should be working for you now!
will you make this kind of vid for clog?????
Maybe someday! But a lot of the principles are the same! Just depends on some of the specific tools you have in camera.
Great tips Dunna! I’m going to try that lut to help with ettr. I switched from an A7iv to the S5ii and to me v-log is so much easier to work with than s-log3. When i do the cst to rec709 the image and colors already look incredible. Most of the time I just tweak highlights and shadows and call it a day.
Bam! So great to hear that!
Super
very good explanation, dont use v log in low light. V Log works best when you have a lot of light. V log on the s1h is the best Imo.
Why do you say that, the native iso options are higher in v log so I’ve always thought it was better for lowlight
@@aylenstudios test it by yourself if you want :) I made a video about this topic on my Channel. V Log works not very well in low light.
Fr
V-log generates tons of noise in the shadows in low light situations… it’s terrible. V-log is not for every situation. Only use it with native iso. I really like HLG profile, has good dynamic range and better shadows.
You have good NR in Resolve or Next Vlog is noisy but of a good sort easy to denoise in post specially the Proresraw Vlog or Braw Vlogs...crazy DR...
@@filipmichalsaffray441 my personal experience with NR is not good enough. It softens a lot the image creating sometimes a strange blur… but I see your point.
@@kire_S with Resolve onboard NR you need training best program for it is NEAT it looks perfect after it even really crappy drone 8 bit footage...
