Prusa Mini Day 1: Getting a good calibrated first layer that sticks to the bed, and assembly tweaks.

  • Straight from the box, I had some pretty serious issues after my initial setup. I could not get the first layer properly calibrated, and the fancy prusament PLA would not stick to the bed. I also had some assembly issues that caused some concern. Luckily, these were all pretty well-documented issues that were quick to fix!

    Bobstro from the prusa forums runs an amazing blog/wiki resource thing and he solved my calibration and adhesion issues with these following links:

    I was pretty bummed when I cranked up my Mini only to realize it didnt work out of the box. I left it sitting for a week checking online off and on for solutions. Then I found this video and now that I have a better understanding of what's happening I'm motivated to get it working. Thanks for the info!

    Thank you so much for this video! This is my first printer and after the stock calibration thingy I thought that youre supposed to have gaps in the first layer and wondered why everything came off during printing after a while. 🤦‍♂️
    Now everything is 0.15mm lower and prints perfectly!

    Thanks Rob! I love the simplicity you brought to this, the way you explained it really just clicked and made sense. I'm already going to get the flat sheet part you posted, that's a great idea/helper tool.
    When I found this video I had just got done doing the things you recommended, I've also had to up my PLA temp by 15 deg for some reason and I'm still not completely satisfied with my prints yet so I'm still looking for more solutions I might not have thought of.
    But I think you should do more of these, you explain what's going on and how to fix it so everyone can understand it without adding confusion to the mix and though it's simple, it's perfect. I wish you did all their troubleshooting videos! I'll be checking out your other videos for sure.

    Thanks for pointing out the adjustment print by jeffjordan, that really showed me that I was printing just a piece of strings instead of a uniform sheet. Hope that my prints will stick better now! Interestingly, I have exactly the same experience with the Mini, first print worked flawlessly and then the second day, things started to go wrong and prints would warp...

    I've always found wiping my print beds with paint thinner applied via an old sock works wonders. That's what I use to do on my wham bam sheet on my ender. Haven't had a single problem with my prusa plate sticking on the efirst run. I'm kinda conscious about only grabbing it on the edges too.

    i think everyone that has the mini has the same issues lol nice work getting it all fixed up - out of all my machines this one is very fiddley but prints great - i to had to fix the hotend gap - and loosen the idler screw - u should also change the ptfe tube inside the hotend for a better grade like capricorn tube and get the textured bed - it makes the prints look even better !!!!

  • @matthewbach6377

    Is the 3x3 calibration layer meant to be solid? I see you're showing a bad one that is basically just a set of strings in a square not fused together. Does the right calibration yield one that has the entirety of the square fused together?

  • @anwira2

    Smearing hand grease on the print bed does not help indeed? It works like a release agent. I work in aerospace composites industry and wearing nitrile gloves is standard practice. Should be done at 3D printing as well. Prevents a lot op problems.

    • @robrobsworkshop
      @robrobsworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An Wira ooh! Good idea. I already have a couple boxes in the shop, I’ll be sure to glove up if I need to handle the sheet!

    • @vinshin3320
      @vinshin3320 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robrobsworkshop Nitrile gloves aren't really that necessary just handle the sheet by holding the edges instead of touching the face of the sheets. Every month, you should clean with warm water and soap. Before every single print, wipe the sheet down with Isopropyl Alcohol (more than 90%)
      Edit: You should also wipe the sheet down with Acetone to rejuvenate the sheet.

    • @robrobsworkshop
      @robrobsworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      HDR20 Films yeah. Since washing it I’ve managed to avoid touching it entirely. Monthly cleaning sound good. For the past couple days it’s been smooth sailing with daily ipa wipe downs. Gloves seem like a good idea if I find myself to paw at the thing a lot but yeah, being a bit more careful and not touching it to begin with seems like the best bet! Thanks for tips, acetone is like, the one solvent I don’t have on my shelf, so I will grab a small can next time I’m out and about. I have heard you don’t want to use that tooo much though, correct, just periodically if it needs a little help and soap and water aren’t working?

    • @vinshin3320
      @vinshin3320 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robrobsworkshop Yes, I usually would clean it with acetone every 1-2 weeks and clean the bed with warm water and soap every month or so. You should check out Prusa3D's video on begginer. You should also check out the reddit subreddit r/prusa3d for more help in case you're in trouble. They also have a discord too if that's perferrable to you.

      My Drone Stories I’m traveling this weekend and not in front of the printer, but once you start the print, one of the menus has an option called something along the lines of “live z adjust”, and when you select that you can dial it up or down accordingly. You should still follow the instructions/guidelines in the manual, it’s just easier to see in the large square shape than with the factory included test shape.

    To me, a lot of the struggles with the Prusa Mini come across as superficial, as most of the builds I've seen were by makers with CNC experience. In other words, many reported issues seem like content for content's sake.

      Tubers gonna tube :D Anyhow, I can't really speak for anyone else, but as someone who is relatively new to both hobbies- when the third failure in a row happened, I momentarily was worried that I might have hours of troubleshooting in front of me, but was pretty relieved to quickly learn it was all pretty simple stuff.

      I’ve had a few issues with mine, but I agree with the video: nothing that hasn’t been too tough to fix. This is my first 3D printer ever, so I really didn’t know what to expect going in. I had some adhesion issues with PETG, and some x axis issues, but in both cases there were posts over on the Prusa mini forums that pointed me in the right direction.

    Josef Prusa is a scam!
    It makes an excellent advertisement for your product but the same your products are crap, they don't work as they should.
    My husband and I bought an MK2S and upgraded to MMU2, until today the printer does not work properly.
    We thought it was punctual and we bought a Prusa Mini the same problem (it doesn't work).
    We got tired, we ended up buying a Weistek printer for a third of the price and it works great thanks.
    Josef Prusa pays digital influencers to spread his brand and influence people to buy that piece of shit.
    Make no mistake, PRUSA does not work well.
