Assuming you had the AOS street series. How did you connect the bottom side port vent hose to y fitting > to the top of the block. The turbo air outlet (that connects to the Intercooler) is in the way? I manage to squeezed it in there but it is slightly bent.
@@Smeedia I thought of that too but it seems like it wouldn’t make much of a difference. I’ll try it out anyway! The fact that you still respond to these old vids is awesome bro. I appreciate; you’re the best!
I recommend priming the turbo separate from the engine to make sure oil is positively feeding its bearings. The way I did it was leave the turbo feed line disconnected and routed into an empty water bottle, disconnected the crank angle sensor, left the fuel pump fuse off, and then left spark plugs removed since I was gonna replace them with 1-step colders. Last, fill oil. Using a remote hand-held starter button, I would crank the engine until I see oil coming out of the feed line and filling up the water bottle. Once it did, I installed the feed line onto the turbo and crank over again inside the car until the oil light on the dash disappeared. That also took a few series of cranking, even after priming the turbo feed line. This just gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling that my turbo is [visually] fed oil to its bearings. Everyone does it differently but some never prime the oil period, and wondered why their turbo died 2 months after installation. After that, fill coolant, replace fuse, crank angle sensor, install plugs, then start, bleed coolant, check for leaks.
I filled the turbo wil oil and spun the wheel until I saw it start to come out of the turbo drain port but may end up doing this as well to make sure everything is happy 😅
OCTurboJoe , what’s up brother. Question, since you have a VAB STI did you use the type 2 oil routing, or type 1. I installed type 2 since I have dual AVCS, and we plumbed the oil line off the passenger side front AVCS. It appears in this video, and a discussion I had with Smeedia (Tanner), he installed his oil feed in the type 1 setup.
Called FP, verified that type 1 set up with the car is good. Both the FP Blue and VF48 are hournel bearing turbos so the amount of oil being fed from the back of the block is more than sufficient to provide enough lubrication for the turbo. If I can avoid pulling oil from the AVCS I'd prefer doing it that way.
@@adamswartz7670 I installed IAGs oil feed line kit but my factory oil feed line is configuration is Type 1 (two separate oil lines for turbo and AVCS) but I converted it to Type 2 where both the turbo and front passenger intake AVCS is fed from the back of the block.
So I'm currently having a shop install an fp blue in my 2013 wrx. But they told me they're having an issue the turbo is hitting the secondary air valves and I might have to remove the air valves. It just sounds odd cuz I've read online people installing fp blues and never heard them have remove them. Any suggestions since I live in California and with strict emissions removing them is not an option. TIA
Tanner, How do you like your fp blue turbo, I want to for my fa20 any thoughts on headers and meth injection? My tuner wants me to add meth injection if I add the turbo
Loved my FP Blue, really good little street turbo 😁 If you have access to E85 do that if not then meth is the way 🔥 For header snag grimmspeed or Killer B 💪
Hey, any issues with this? My tuner recommended FP Blue but... I am not super certain how I feel about them / for the long term lasting, as well? Thanks for your time, if you see/reply to this!!!
So I’ve been watching videos on the Down pipe, waste gate videos and how you need the waste gate for boost creep mitigation. Do you only run a EWG when you have an aftermarket turbo or can you do it with a stock turbo stage 2 set up? I’ve seen all other j pipe installs typically Catless and no one runs an EWG
One thing about the EWG I'm curious to know how you did.. Did you need to use a bracket on that turbo to hold the wastegate on the FP (or any Factory for that matter) closed?
Similar to my setup. I went with TurboSmart 44 EWG, Grimmspeed UpPipe, Killer Bee Expansion tank, Killer Bee holy Header. Don't miss that install either. lol You thought about throwing on the ETS MaxFlow header?
Can you use the same downpipe with this turbo? Also, will you be routing your dump tube to rejoin the main exhaust, or will you be doing an atmospheric dump?
One thing I wanted to add.. Is it safe leaving the input for the bottom, the nut pressed up against the coolant hose like that? Mine looks exactly the same in this config, but just am not sure how comfortable I am leaving that input nut lodged against the heat shielding on that pipe, even though it's all secure. Would there be anything against using the bottom fitting instead? Just for a bit of added security?
Ok, since I'm ripping my hair out right now. I'm 99% completed from starting this confidently, but I badly need to know.. HOW DID YOU DO THAT LOWER BOLT? Dude, I have no idea what magic was worked to get that torqued down you did, because with the EWG there, and the angle of the downpipe, I can't even get a socket on it now. I tried using a bendybob thing, and was able to get a BIT of torque before it slipped, and I don't want to try much more. Oh if you can, please tell me how you guys got that bolt tightly in, because I'm so close to being done with this all and want to start it. Everything else is all secured again, and new installs finished. Up-Pipe, Downpipe, EWG, Plugs, AoS, EBC, Getadome Cyl4 Cooling, and Oil/Coolant flush.
So we had to grind down the flange that is on the bolt to get it to fit, the flange was too wide where it kept hitting the downpipe and would not fully seat. If you've got a bench grinder just grind it down a little if now a file will also work. But I feel the pain that bolt was a huge pain!
I just ordered the same turbo and did the 1050 injectors today wasn't as bad as I thought.Im on a budget att he moment is it ok to upgrade to the fp blue with stock rails and lines, will be getting them later down the line.I won't be running E85 just 93 can't get e85 around my area closest spot about 75 miles away only looking to get closest to 400hp as possible on stock internals have all supported bolt on already as your how to get 350 on sti video.
How do you like the blue I'm searching for a stock bolt on upgrade at the moment for my 17 sti, trying to find a good balance turbo stock bolt on with my external Wastegate also going stock internals nothing crazy. I figured get it done now while I have everything ripped apart doing fueling mods.
Honestly I love it, check out the dyno video if you havent already seen it. Thr turbo pulls strong, great for stock block, had capability for more and is a great turbo for DD
What tool did you use to tighten the bolt you were having trouble with? I'm trying to drop my DP without removing the EWG. Unfortunately, I only have a 14mm ratchet wrench and the box end won't fit. Wondering if a standard box end wrench fits.
@@Smeedia Idk, when I'm on one of the sides, I always feel like I'm going to elbow the hood onto the windshield even though the struts won't let it go.

I hear that the dump pipes on those external wastegates tend to crack and break the uppipes unless you do a bracket mod on the dump pipe did you do that on the dump pipe?
I just got my wastegate installed by Tier 1 in liberty lake and I noticed that the top port of my wastegate does not have a rubber line running to it. IS that normal? I know that some wastegates the top port goes to the boost controller and other wastegates you have to vent the top port to atmosphere, Why is that?

The mistake that we all make, if you want to update your car with good stuff, the first thing you should do is to forge your engine, before installing all the good stuff, I think it is cheaper, remember that those engines are 300 hp,
Not entirely true, whole a engine with forged internals is a good idea its not always 100% needed. Ive been at 400WHP on the non Tupe RA short block months with no issues other than the clutch. How did you connect the bottom side port vent hose to y fitting > to the top of the block. The turbo air outlet (that connects to the Intercooler) is in the way? I manage to squeezed it in there but it is slightly bent.
I used a shorter line off the block breather to compensate so it would sit lower 🙏
@@Smeedia I thought of that too but it seems like it wouldn’t make much of a difference.
I’ll try it out anyway! The fact that you still respond to these old vids is awesome bro. I appreciate; you’re the best!
I try to!
Size not are you still tmic?
You're going to melt that inner CV boot cover where that dump pipe is. If it can be rotated up a bit more, and perhaps consider wrapping it....?
It can rotate up anymore without hitting the trans, the dump tube is ceramic coated soit should be alright, but it does look like its cutting it close
@@Smeedia Keep an eye on that boot either way, those dumps can get hotter than you think.
Going to be checking it routinely to make sure, if I start to see it melting going to try and reroute it or have a customer dump tube fabricated
@@Smeedia Awesome! Thanks for verifying to everyone Tanner!
My tuner recommended the FP blue can’t decide between that and the Cobb 20g
Curious to see what the blue will do, hopefully helps provide you with some clarity!
Can’t wait to see.
What's the benefit of an external waste gate over an internal one? Plus the $$ difference for you. Really interesting rebuild to follow. Thx
Gives the tuner better control over the boost parameters and eliminates any possibility for boost creep 😁
When I swapped out the down pipe on my car it kicked my ass, luckily I got help or else I wouldn’t have got it done
The downpipe is not a fun install, once you add a wastegate in there it gets worse 😅
TIA
Tanner,
How do you like your fp blue turbo, I want to for my fa20 any thoughts on headers and meth injection? My tuner wants me to add meth injection if I add the turbo
Loved my FP Blue, really good little street turbo 😁
If you have access to E85 do that if not then meth is the way 🔥
For header snag grimmspeed or Killer B 💪
Hey, any issues with this? My tuner recommended FP Blue but... I am not super certain how I feel about them / for the long term lasting, as well? Thanks for your time, if you see/reply to this!!!
Decided to tackle this myself. This video is a big help, thanks! However, what hoses connect to the wastegate? The one from the ebcs?
There are two diffrent ways to route it, double check with your tuner on how they prefer to have it 🙏😁
Was the turbo direct bolt on or did you need to do modifications to make it fit?
So I’ve been watching videos on the Down pipe, waste gate videos and how you need the waste gate for boost creep mitigation. Do you only run a EWG when you have an aftermarket turbo or can you do it with a stock turbo stage 2 set up? I’ve seen all other j pipe installs typically Catless and no one runs an EWG
You can run an EWG with stock turbo. For the most part there's not a huge need to but it will still help with boost control
Dude I feel your pain regarding that lower downpipe bolt. Absolute pain in the butt to install.
The worst part was trying to reach around the EWG to get that darn bolt on the car 🤣🤣🤣
So the fp blue is good to run on a 2020 sti? If I’m going with a high flow cat back, would I need a wastegate?
The stock FP wastegate will be fine and great turbo for the car 🥳
@@Smeedia dude thank you so much!
One thing about the EWG I'm curious to know how you did..
Did you need to use a bracket on that turbo to hold the wastegate on the FP (or any Factory for that matter) closed?
The IWG is welded shut on this FP Blue, but if yours is not then you'll need the bracket
Similar to my setup. I went with TurboSmart 44 EWG, Grimmspeed UpPipe, Killer Bee Expansion tank, Killer Bee holy Header. Don't miss that install either. lol You thought about throwing on the ETS MaxFlow header?
I've seen it and was considering getting it but don't need the amount of flow that the header will provide 😅
Can you use the same downpipe with this turbo? Also, will you be routing your dump tube to rejoin the main exhaust, or will you be doing an atmospheric dump?
It is atmospheric dump and yes I will be using the same downpipe 😁
would have been nice seeing how to route the hoses
There are multiple ways to do so, but I did covet it I'm more recent videos with the 05 STI. But this is not a bad idea for a video
You can use the bottom fitting, this was just the configuration that I used 😁
Ok, since I'm ripping my hair out right now.
Gling to be a little of a challenge hitting 400, the heads will hold you back and so will a single fuel pump but people have done it before 🙏
Great how-to!
Thank you! 😁
I found a FP blue for a good price locally. Is there anything I should look for when I go look at it in person?
Just check for axial shaft play 🔥👌
Hey brother I am gonna attemp to install this. Was it a direct bolt on or did you have to do any modifications? Would appreciate the help
Was direct bolt on 🙏
How do you like the blue I'm searching for a stock bolt on upgrade at the moment for my 17 sti, trying to find a good balance turbo stock bolt on with my external Wastegate also going stock internals nothing crazy.
The world's smallest 14mm box wrench I could find 😬
@@Smeedia thanks. Just picked up a stubby 14mm.
Since, it's an extended install process, have you thought of taking the hood off?
Haven't needed to, the hood has not really been in my way at all 😅
@@Smeedia Idk, when I'm on one of the sides, I always feel like I'm going to elbow the hood onto the windshield even though the struts won't let it go.
Do you have an ewg up pipe suggestion now that grimmspeed no longer makes or sells it?
PLM Makes some now 🔥🙏
Considering a blue for myself, did you get the 84mm flow advancement port option and also is yours coated/ported?
Thank you
I did not, I had thr bare basic lowest trim option possible on my blue, it did fantastic 🙏

Where are you located man? I do custom fabrication all the time and really enjoy your videos
In the puyallup/Tacoma area 😁
What housing did you get on the FP blue? The 58mm or the 84mm compressor cover?

Doing this install now and the oil drain line from the bottom of the turbo is just not cooperating. Any tricks or recommendations to get that on?
Put the drain on the turbo first then slide it down onto the drain 🙏
Hey man, do these banjo bolts still got the screens in them and if so are people still removing those or keeping them in place? 09 WRX. Thanks brotha.
They probably do in the AVCS lines, I remove them. Not a huge fan. They'll save your oil system if you have an engine failure but can potentially clog up as well
@@Smeedia thanks man, I've got to replace the turbski and wanted to make sure. Goin to throw in the cobb DP and Q300 exhaust in to while I'm at it. I appreciate you and your channel man!
In order to do the external wastegate do you need an aftermarket turbo like the fp blue? Or can you do the external wastegate with the stock turbo?
You can use a stock turbo you would just need this 🙏

Hey what size turbo blanket would fit the FP blue mines going in tomorrow!. Will any sti stock turbo size blanket fit?
Yessir! An OE Size will fit 🔥😁
Wich turbo blanket did you go with? I was going to buy one but fp told me that they recommend it. 🤷♂️
I'm just using the steam speed one from my OE Turbo lol
Good job dude, 🤘
Thank you! 😁
I see you got your trusty vape with you, I always hit mine while working on my sti 🤣👍
Lol my attempt at quiting smoking 😅
Just finished my almost exact setup on my 17 sti do you think it's OK to prime the turbo and system then start the car not drive it. I just wanted to burb just coolant without the base tune yet won't be driven my dyno date is still 4 weeks out but wanted to get all the prep work before hand.
You should be ok to just start it, at idle it can compensate well enough to burp the car
Why did you go with the 44mm again? I remember you said it in a previous video just can’t find it lol
Was originally going to use a larger turbo and bought the 44mm but got the FP blue so did not want to re buy an Upipe and EWG lol
watch a donut video about 22bs or watch a 3 year old smeedia video welp im here xD
7:38 I found a juul when you where doing the oil lines xD
I hear that the dump pipes on those external wastegates tend to crack and break the uppipes unless you do a bracket mod on the dump pipe did you do that on the dump pipe?
I did not but knowing that I mill probably do one now 😅
Erich the tuner over at PREracing did a video on those cracking awsome video its on his channell WILL TUNE FOR TACOS you should check it out
@@joemeyers4125 definitely going to check it out, he tuned my friends outback!
Just diffrent set ups for diffrenr boost controller some tuners have it one way while others do that way
thanks for the video man ,,, FYI, you bolted the upper left up-pipe bracket the wrong way (Up side down) hahahhahah little tip there :D, carry on the great work good luck.
Lol oops, it will still hold 😅 appreciate the tip on that one I might swing back though and fix that😅 appreciate the support!
I wrote the comment half way through the video, since you are not using a heat shield this bracket won't make a difference ahahahhahahahahah, that was a tough install I work on my car as well I feel you bro hahaha.
@@Smeedia It will hold but since you have a blanket instead of the shield you don't have to worry about it. That down pipe though, I have bad memories installing it. ended up cutting a seized bolt, took me an hour to remove one bolt -_-
Oh I know all about sized bolts, tomorroes upload I had to cut off a master cylinder brace from a sized bolt 🙃
@@Smeedia ops hahahhahahah working on cars never easy :D
My vband clamp doesn’t close all the way like yours but I am able to tighten it pretty solid. Does it matter if it’s touching on both ends or is it fine where I can leave a small gap?
There should be a small gap between thr two clamps 🙏
Smeedia sweeeet thanks man! I was getting so worried lol love the videos!
Stock turbo with an ewg set up will I have to have my stock flap welded shut? What do you recommend? I could get a block off plate until I am ready for a new turbo as well. Thanks in advance
They make Wastegate brackets that keep it shut so you don't have to weld it 😁

Not dumb questions, perfertly normal one 🔥 the vracket is cheap maybe like $30 or so
Trying to decide which fuel pump/ injectors fuel and parts will need for fuel. Do want to be set up to run e85 down the road and need help with turbo to go with i already have a tail 38mm external wastegate. @@Smeedia would it work for the fp blue? Most of what I see is for the VF turbos
Yes it would, you can get your FP blues IWG welded shut from FP when you order the turbo

Hey I have a quick question I just Dyno I made 356 on E85 but I want a FP blue turbo I don’t really want to go with the external wastegate how much power you think I will game by just adding the turbo with the internal wastegate or what you recommend
What is the car and whats the full parts list?
2018 wrx I have full bolt ons
What parts though, FBO has diffrent meanings across the board 😅
I got Grimm speed Charge and top mount intercooler Tgv and Egr,aos , full cat back, catted downpipe, Perrin oil cooler, tomei headers, ets intake, Cobb boost control,
Cobb flex fuel
Catted downpipe? So it clears it with the ewg dump tube?
Yessir, can verify it clears with both the Cobb and grimmspeed
@@Smeedia do you think it will clear with my invidua catted downpipe? As the cat is towards near the turbo unlike the cobb one.
Not sure with that one, I'm sure there's a way to rotate the dump tube to accommodate the cat
Can you install the up pipe for a 2020 WRX or it’s only for a sti?
Sti only 🙏

Must be duel scroll and yes it would be on the header 🙏
@@Smeedia thank you bro I appreciate it 🙏🏼
The mistake that we all make, if you want to update your car with good stuff, the first thing you should do is to forge your engine, before installing all the good stuff, I think it is cheaper, remember that those engines are 300 hp,
Not entirely true, whole a engine with forged internals is a good idea its not always 100% needed. Ive been at 400WHP on the non Tupe RA short block months with no issues other than the clutch. And the RA shortblocks can handle significantly more power. Really goong tk come down to what your power goal is for the car
the oil feed doesnt come off the AVCS solenoid?
Not on the newer models, there is a dedicated oil galley for the turbo
Nick Whitaker that’s how I did it. 2017 STI. Type 2 for newer sti with AVCS
Can i use that uppipe in stock turbo?
Yes you can 😁
7psi-20psi spring is quite the rate of body weight can handle . But if 20psi-40psi spring rate. It’s horrible .......... even with 2 -3person
