    The fundamental issues with stock location is turbo inlet size. Max air flow will be vacuum at turbo inlet vs atmosphere. That 2.4" inlet becomes a choke point no matter how big the impeller is. I plan to skip the stock location upgrade and go rotated.

    So... first video of yours. Damn good man, holy shit is it refreshing to watch someone with great technical knowledge that can also speak in normal car talk. I have a 98RS with a EJ20K conversion (WRX heads, Coil on plug, 1050's, tgv deletes, rails, etc) running the stock VF34 that came with it. Was looking at going rotated eventually and you really helped clear up most of the questions that I had! +1 sub for me!

    Loving the content mate. Surprised that you didn’t touch on the best thing about a rotated turbo. The extra flow and efficiency of a rotated v band rear housing. Compared to the poorly designed/flowing Subaru rear housing. That comes on the fp and blouch’s . The gains you get in spool in the same size turbo and power/ torque they hold up top is night and day.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very true! I also totally spaced on the restrictions of thr turbo inlet as well. Many benefits to going rotated 🔥

    • @PolishAlexx
      @PolishAlexx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bingo, that's the best point. Except I like keeping it stock locatio, since it has less bends on the dp. AMS manifold removes all restrictions of having a turbo inlet. No need to go rotated.

    • @lincolntighe5836
      @lincolntighe5836 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PolishAlexx so you’re saying to go to a 6062 with a 4” inlet and the 4” inlet fits under the AMS? there are no issues with “more bends” on a rotated downpipe. The more bends don’t become a restriction l, as shown by numerous 1000hp setups that are rotated.

    • @PolishAlexx
      @PolishAlexx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lincolntighe5836 yes that's correct. Two hard bends so close to the turbine absolutely effects it and getting a well designed one is crucial. Look how WRC Impreza turbos are mounted in order to have no bend at all. Yes 4" inlets fit easily with AMS, I believe Bader built has one on their channel.

    • @lincolntighe5836
      @lincolntighe5836 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PolishAlexx doesn’t seem to restrict the 1000hp cars that rotate their turbo. Maybe you should tell ETS they’re making a restrictive downpipe and you know better 😂😂. If it was a real issue people wouldn’t do it. Especially the guys wanting big power and drag times. Have you ever heard a tuner or builder say, “geez this rotated downpipe is restricting this turbo” hahaha never.

  • @jimrustle643
    @jimrustle643 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I beleive you can get your turbo (which ever model you have either factory or aftermarket) clocked to a useable position for a variety of uses. Also, I love how you're going balls to the wall in one aspect while I'm going balls to the wall while still attempting to look as factory as possible under the hood. We'll see what she does on dyno day. Shooting for 450whp

    Rotated turbos also look amazing! I was recommended by my tuner to go rotated but since I already had every part upgraded for the stock location turbo I decided to go with the largest stock location turbo as possible so I went with a blouch dom 5 which I’ve been pretty happy with so far. I wouldn’t really want anything much bigger because it already doesn’t spool until about 4200 rpm and I’d like my sti to be good at tracks with turns.

You can use whatever parts you want. And it’s way cheaper. I’ve pieces kits together for 1500 in parts and a dozen hours of my time that are every bit as good as a $6000 kit

But for those of us interested in taking the rotated plunge and going hog wild on our set up, what becomes of the issues we would now face with waste gates dumping to atmosphere, tgv deletes and all sorts of other EPA infractions that tuners would be inclined to deny us a tuning session for. How do we now go through the tuning process post the "EPA crack down"? Side note, we love your videos out here Philly side of PA! Keep up the fantastic content buddy!

    I wonder why folks don't rotate it the other direction. Where it uses the hood scoop for a cold air intake to the filter where the original intercooler was at (versus your hot air intake with the standard rotated setup). And the hot side boost pipe from the turbo goes where the original intake pipe to the turbo used to go under the intake. Is there not enough room behind the turbo then for an exhaust?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen some people do it but not often, there is room, ETS turbo kit has the pipe route under the intake manifold. But you'll get shorter piping if you route it this way. Plethora of ways it can be done 🙏

  • @larryp85

    Big power conversion with a rotated turbo 🐌 is very cool 😎. And great power rewards depending on the turbo 🐌 size you spool. Lots of detail to consider though or one could end up looking the fool.
    It requires at a minimum a medium to advanced level of skill. For you “Golden Spanner” Tanner you have both the unstoppable will and the required skill. 👍 You also have a great build partner in Fuse Fabrication that made this conversion possible and went above and beyond for you. Fabricating in your garage you owe that man a case of beer 🍺 or maybe two above and beyond what you are paying 💵 him too.
    Good luck 🤞 with your joint venture on the conversion kit! You have a nice opportunity to both share with your following and to profit 💸. I respectfully suggest appeal will be enhanced if you create detailed installation instructions both video already done ✅ and PDF printable to go with it.

    Why do high powered subaru run a big diameter pipe from intercooler to TB in comparison to from turbo to intercooler.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes it's to match throttle body size. I know for me that was one of thr main reasons. I'm using a 3.5" TB on my EG and we have 3.5" intercooler piping on the cold side and 3" on thr hot side. It will also change velocity die to piping DIA change. But if you have a larger throttle body and use a reducer coupler your creating a bottle neck in the piping

    What are the Pros/Cons with having a MAF with your Rotated setup (GT3582R is my turbo). I see mines have it.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eliminating the MAF removes another restriction from the intake track allowing for better flow. Is yours a hybrid SD/MAF set up?

    • @ezenity

      @@Smeedia I think it is a Hybrid. Here is a short clip of me showing you in my engine bay: th-cam.com/video/DyMqCZwJwRg/w-d-xo.html
