Deleting the Secondary Air Pump From the STI

- This is probably one of the worst installs you will do on the car but I promise it will free up so much space in the engine bay. The secondary air pump is used to help with emissions control, luckily I do not have emissions in Washington state so bye bye pump. I do advise that you will want to have the intake manifold removed to do this install, however; you can leave the hoses if you need to and just block off the ports on the cylinder heads.

Got my STI a few months back and your videos hit all of my questions. Keep it up!
Eyyyy congrats on the car and glad to hear!
Once again I’m pretty sure your the only video on YT that goes into detail on taking this stuff out. Specifically the barometric pressure sensor. 9:27 🙏🏻
Well. I really wanted to do this till I seen how much of a pain it was..
It's a little annoying to install 😅
@@Smeedia wat sup bro i got this code in my wrx impreza p0410 and i fix the air pump and a sensor 02 in i still the have the check engine light.
Nice choice on headers! Update on my build, I decided to go with the Holy Headers as well. I accidentally ordered the 2 bolt up pipe instead of the 3 bolt, so I decided to just buy new headers since the back order for the 3 bolt Grimmspeed is June 7th! Didn't want to wait that long lol
I don't blame you. You made a great choice on headers though!
@@Smeedia hey please help me so today I finally did the the air pump delete on my 2016 STI with the block off plats. However, it was acting all crazy because the sensors weren't connected. So tomorrow I will go back and reconnect the sensors. Onces the sensors are connected can I use the that way or do I have to get the cell removed before driving. I live in a foreign country and there's no tuners that can actually do that. Please help! 😢
Your gling to need to have those CELs turned off 😮💨 cars gling to run really weird on cold starts
@@Smeedia alright thanks man
After you separate the sensor do you just cut the copper prongs coming out of the sensor that go into the solenoid?
Bro😁😁😁 that grin when you picked up the sawzall 😂😂😂😂 I was rolling😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣 couldn't help it, sweet revenge lol
big turbski time! i love that you can do basically anything to your cars, i lack that knowledge and confidence for the harder installs haha. cant wait to see it running again.
This was my first time doing the air lump delete, I just go for it 😅 worst comes to worst I have to buy a replacement part but the experience is worth it to me. Can't wait to get her back up and running! Appreciate the support my friend!
sawzall slow motion smile....Priceless!
Couldn't resist 😅😅😅
I just deleted both mine. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it man.
Anytime 🙏
I just did this last week without online videos to help me I’m a week too late. But there’s two ways to do this the hard way and harder way I noticed block the tube vs the actual block is easier but to each his own. I did the actual block delete.
How was it for you? 😅since I had everything out, figured I might as well just remove it all lol
@@Smeedia it was a pain but Im catless so the air pumps are useless but to keep from making things worse by accident i nust left the solenoid with Baro sensor in the car. I was going to cut it but if you mess it up its 300 for another one.
I was worried about damaging it but that thing can take a beating I was not gentle and mine still works 🔥
@@Smeedia yeah i would have liked to cut it but i was at the want to set the car on fire and sell the car phase of the build so i left it lol. Man i know that frustration with these cars haha.
I did the block-off plates, left the pump in place but disconnected the power, and disabled the CEL in tune. Passed smog. :)
Thankfully I don't have SMOG here 😅
Year of sti? We have an 2011 just threw codes for secondary air valve. Would love to do what you are saying. We are in CA. Need to make sure we wont get check engine light after any delete
@fngr
Wish I could’ve done this while my Manifold was off 😕
I’ll wait until it fails now.
Great Job Tanner! 👍🏽
Always next time! And thanks my man! 😁
Do you think a leak in the Air pump system would cause a rough idle?
Should of done this on my motor rebuild when it was out of the car but thanks for the video man, you help alot with my build🤝
Dont own a subaru but yikes! I thought the wirings and vacuum lines on my speed3 was a nightmare but this is worse lol.
It's not too bad once you get in there a bit 🙌🙏
Silly question, but since it's emissions-related, will you have any issues with emissions testing if you do a secondary air pump block off?
Yes you will, if its a visual inspection or OBD2 scan you will not pass
Man a very detailed delete. You learn something new everyday though. God job.
❤❤❤
@smeedia what the reason for deleting secondary air pump?
why wouldn't you just leave the sensor attached to the solenoid, then mount the soienoid by itself without hoses etc
I can’t find the block off plates anywhere for my 2018 sti can you help me????
do you only need the one sensor? if so do we just tape up the other one? because of the two pumps / solenoids i would like to be sure if i need to carve out both sensors or just the one.
im about to do this if my tuner gives me the go ahead. id have loved to get the green light before getting the IAG 550 installed and running but im willing to take the intake back off for the 5 millionth time to get this crap out of my engine bay. it would help the fmic and bov piping sit muuch nicer.
For the barometric sensor, can't you just leave it attached to the solenoid? I'm a bit confused why it needs to be removed from the baro sensor? Thanks for your help!
You definitely can, I prefer to clean up as much of thr engine bay as I can so I remove them 🙏
@@Smeedia thanks man for the clarification!
Wonder if this works well with the FXT.
Where do u get the plates that you put in the back of the motor where it was the solenoids?
Great video and DIY
I have a question after doing exactly the same process as you will this throw an error message in the dash due to the air pump not being there. And if it does can it be erased with the Cobb tuning access port.
If I understood your video correctly as long as a plugin the solenoid to the car it would run fine and it will not throw any error codes on the dash.
Great tutorial great videos believe it or not you inspire a lot of people on starting working on their car and keep it up.
You'll have a CEL on the dash so your tuner will have to make an adjustment to turn the CEL off, the Baro is needed to read the atmospheric pressure outside of the intake manifold and it helps to regulate boost parameters. And thank you appreciate the support and kind words, just trying to help people out where I can 😁
Smeedia
Thanks for
Your quick response not that many you tubers will take the time to respond to questions.
Ones again thanks
Anytime! 😁
@@Smeedia the tuner (we have cobb accessport) will delete the code…will the code continue to be thrown each time you start up tho? We are in CA. It will need to be smogged. Considering deleting but leaving airpump in place for “aesthetics” 😂
@Smeedia do you possibly have a good source for the block off plates amazon link is dead :(
Having a hard time finding a reputable source!
Hi Tanner, did you cut the copper wire? Is this needed for anything because mine broke off when it finally popped off the solenoid. Thanks!
I did cut mine. No issues 👌
Glad I found your comment! I was over cautious and, gentle when removing the sensor. Copper wire still broke off😅.
In the process of rebuilding my EJ25 short block to a long block during the assembly I've known about the deleting of this cause they fail and there useless lol. Same as a TGV delete. but I can only seem to locate one of those sensor things that you have two of and my missing one or is it possible my 07 WRX just has one? If you know I'd appreciate it thanks for the video going to order some plates too. By the way sick STI bro
Older models may only have one, it should still have the baro sensor that you will want to retain
Hello, can Delete the secondary air pump from a Subaru Forester SG6 ? (engine type is EJ204)
Mvh Odd (Norway)
What’s the reason why you plugged the baro pressure back in? Only asking cause I didn’t do it.
I'm getting a p2441... I don't need to remove the system.. Just want to replace the stuck valve... Is that the top one with the barometric sensor? Aside from the intercooler how much would need to be removed to access that?
Nice slo-mo with the saw! classic!
Couldn't resist 😅
Sawzall to the engine bay. Very nice 👌 👍👍
Gotta do what we gotta do 😅😅😅
@@Smeedia that's right hahaha
Was there coolant in the passenger side hose??
I know this is an older video. But I am now getting this problem in my 2013 wrx. My question is. once I do this. Do I need a tune after?
I can't wait to get rid of my pump.I hate that thing, the second solinoid on the driver's side not the one with the sensor you cut out do you just tape the plug off or do we need to plug that one in also back to the wiring harness.
You can just take it out and leave it unplugged. It is just a servo for thr actuator 😁
Can we still do this post GreenSpeed update?
Hey bro , love watching your videos , very informative and to the point , with this delete would you pass a state inspection?
If your state requires emmisions testing you would not pass 🙏
All u gotta do is go to a country mechanic. Brought it to a guy where I live and he passed it. They always let stuff slide trust me.
Yooo, where in washington are you? Im in tacoma. Started my sti build a few weeks ago and filmed a couple episodes. Waiting on some parts from a couple sponsors for the budget build haha. Hmu man! Let’s collab!
I'm over in South hill so not too far! And always down 🔥
Smeedia dude im in parkland 😂
Hella close 😅
@@Smeedia I'm in bremerton! Let's link gah damn
I broke the housing for the harness that plugged into the secondary air pump on my Wrx when changing spark plugs. After I was done it was plugged in the wrong way (who knew it would plug in both ways) so it had a rough idle and my car stalled while in reverse so I thought of removing the secondary air pump. Glad I figured out the plug was in the wrong way cause this looks like a headache 😂
Lol oh it is such a headache, especially when you've got to take all of this crazy off and out of the way 😅
Smeedia yea I bet! Seems like a project to do when you already have to tear the engine apart
Nice job my friend, and I'm enjoying your install/upgrades even though I don't own a Subaru any more. Keep up the great work!
Appreciate the support Steve! Super jelly of your GT, ill catch up one day 😉 but its definitely been an adventure getting this thing torn down and re assembled 😅
@@Smeedia Looking forward to catching up with you one of these days post Covid-19! Car enthusiasts can appreciate so many platforms, and it's really fun to see what you're doing over here. I have no doubt you're building a real fire breather and I cannot wait to see the updates to come. Thanks for the kind words about my own cars too!
Definitely once the world calms down again, I'd love to swing out to one of those meets with you!
Cellenoids... God you're killing me. Solenoid!
😉 lol not trying to 😅
I got a check engine light for this. The codes are p2441, p2444. How do I fix it?
Thanks for the detailed vid - about to do this on my '06 Forester XT to pass inspection here in TX. Being a native Washingtonian, no emissions in WA? That's news to me!
Yessir! And so glad we don't have emissions up here! Qhat part of Texas are you in?! I use to go down to Galveston and Huston all he time 🙌
@@Smeedia I'm actually in the south side in a suburb of Houston! Even though state wide they have deferred inspection/registration, since I work at Johnson Space Center I have to keep my tabs up to date to drive on site. UGH.
Dude this second solenoid is a pain, since my headers are still on I can't get to the bolt even with a U-joint. I think I'm gonna leave it on until next time I have the headers off!
And uhh, by headers I mean intake manifold... 🤦🏼♂️
Totally don't blame you, even with the turbo off it was a huge PIA
Hi nice video with it being 2 egr not the one with the sensor the other on where do you put the lead that plugs in the second one? Also do you need a tune after
You do need a tune and you'll just have to have the baro sensor plugged in 🙏
Thanks 🙏
honestly this just looks like a pain in the ass on video even lol.. im sure youre glad that one is done
Glad I don't have to do it again and definitely a pain to do 🤣
If that baro sensor goes bad , does it affect how the car runs at all? Like will it mess with the air to fuel ratio and give boost problems ??? Or does it not really matter besides it giving a check engine code and keeping you from passing emissions test ?
It can effect how the car runs but shouldent be anything detrimental. It may effect some readings you can also turn off thr baro sensor in accesstuner
@@Smeedia how do you turn off the baro sensor from the AP? I have this problem on my 07 sti. I have thr p2431p2433 codes due to maybe a faulty valve solenoid. I tried to erase the codes but they just come back on. I cant pass inspection with this. Im in the process of ordering a new valve which is over $300. Some people said just get it tuned and have the tuner delete the codes but u heard they can't do that anymore due to EPA regulations? Idk. This is a pain in the ass.
@@joesantos7196 same boat. The valve is stuck open on my bank 1 which makes it run Shitty I’m boost so I’m always easy on it. A tactrix cable is $200 to turn off the code permanently. The delete I got is $25
@@joesantos7196 I think the green speed update got rid of stuff like tgv deletes, and sai deletes on accessports per epa regulations
@D.sg5 That's exactly what I'm wondering now. This stuff is absolutely useless and has very little too no effect on actual emissions besides when it first starts. Absolutely ridiculous.
I just cut across the top with a hacksaw to separate the sensor. Took about 4 minutes.
Joshua Delahoussaye so im doing mine right now, you have to put that sensor back in?
@@michaelparker5763 ya you have to. I spoke with my tuner just to be sure. If your car doesnt know the barometric pressure itll get the air fuel mix wrong forever. If you cut with a hacksaw along the top of the metal cylinder straight across the baro sensor comes out functional then I just plugged it back in and zip tied it to something out the way.
Thanks for this vid and all your content! If I check the box off in Access Tuner for CEL codes that are triggered from the delete, (ex. P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)), do I need to see that code for anything else? Sorry if it's a dumb question!
If that's the code your getting that would be related to an O2 sensor 👀🙏
Great in depth detail video
Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏
Mine caught on fire this morning. Is there a way I can half ass this so i can get home?
my car just got secondary air injection system switching valve stuck open what should i do?
Keep them coming in brother 👍🏻👍🏻😊
More on the way my friend! 🔥😁
Not the first time i say this but this is better than most "how to"s on YT looking forward to doing mine. Also that man said he was gonna find budget friendly headers and bought the killer b XD
I couldn't find any budget friendly ones 😅😅😅😅
My vacuum pump just went . Can you help. Any advise.
I wish i can do this but cali smog is hell
Just got p2441 valve bank 1 stuck close 2013 wrx. Been searching what side valve is tht but cant find anythng.
Should be the one without thr large purple snd black connector on it
@@Smeedia thnk you sir tht should be the driver side
Hey man, what did you do with the plug/connector for the air pump itself? Does it just dangle? Same question for the not barometric pressure solenoid connector.
Thr plig is taped up and tucked away the baro is zip tied to the heater core lines
@@Smeedia I see, no issues with that? Also, since I caught you online, have you had any rough idling after the delete? I seem to have "shaky" idle, while it wasn't like that before.
The only rough idle is on cold start about 20 sec in but it corrects itself quickly. Aside from that no issue 🙏
Smeedia got it, thanks a bunch. Keep up the content.
Nice video. Thank you for doing it!
I have 2006 WRX TR and it throws on me P2444 ( System pump stuck on bank1).. I have feeling it's one of the valves stuck because of the corrosion. Question: of I do delete sec air pump mode, can I just leave solenoid with barometric sensor installed in place and just disconnect solenoid from the power since will be doing delete mode? Just to keep barometric sensor plug in and dont cut the solenoid itself? And of course I will block off 2 places with faulty valves with plates..
You can definitely leave the bsro sensor in there, I cut mine out to get more clutter out if the engine bay.
Thank you for quick reply man! Appreciated.
Got the same code for my 16 sti was wondering if it has to be tuned after installing both plates and removing secondary air pump
Looks like a big chore! Im not looking forward to doing that🤣.
It's Def one of the worse ones to do 😅
Thanks for the video. What software do you use to fool the computer and/or keep the codes from coming back?
Acesstuner 😁
What the benefit for deleting air pump??
So how do you delete the codes after since you’ll have a shit ton of codes after? My secondary air pump and valves seized closed so I’m thinking of just deleting the codes so the ecu does not see the system, my question is Cobb pro tune the only way to delete these codes permanently?
A tuner will have to do it unless you have access to access tuner. You can gain accessed by going through cobbs course
Does this throw a code even when plugging the sensor back in?
Bro you know that pump dose one thing you not mentioning it adds o2 to you exhausting which warms up the O2 sensors faster which means you get more proper switching quicker better fuel economy more power sooner just saying it does more than emissions it's not critical but I've noticed since my secondary air pump stopped working and my fuel economy is dropped by about 10%
I've removed them from all my cars and haven't seen any reduction in fuel economy. Yes it does help pump oxygen into the system but thr pumps only active on start up. Wouldn't heavily effect anything if your car is modified. Ignition tables and fuel targeting will play the role on that
Just out from tuner that 2018 and up it is recommended that you don't do the delete cause they have idle problems and haven't figure out why bad part I aready deleted it and I need help trying to figure out how to get code off and out limp mode
Sounds like an EPA regulation answer, I know plenty of people who've deleted it and haven't had major issues. 🤔
Question. Im doing the same Delete on my 2019 STI. What did you do with the plug that connnected to the front of the Air Pump?
Removed it 🙏
So you have to use both solenoids or just one ?
Do this when the engine is out for sure
i’m picking up a 2015 sti in tacoma next week! it had a CEL for air pump so shop is reinstalling and tuning it! this video helped out a lot. but should i tune without air pump? or have them just put it back and tune?
kinda wanna go as stock as possible from them. but at the same time what i’ve gathered from this video it might be good just to leave it off and tune it??
Most shops won't tune without air pumps now because it's an emissions device. Personally I delete air pumps.
Totally your call though. It's just for emissions regulation on cold starts
@@Smeedia thank you i really appreciate the reply
Hi In this modification I need change something in car software? Have a nice day :)
Yes, you will need thr TGV codes turned off 🙏
Hi Thank You for Your aswer I delated pump and valves like You say . I get full of water inside But now i get problem with errors in ecu . May be You can give me some advice what program and cable i need to delete this from ecu rom and how to do this :) ? Gretings
How do you stop code coming up for pump, It has to read 2 psi pressure when it does a pre test on start up. Is there any mods like a relay and a resistor for secondary pressure sensor. Many thanks
Unfortunately not that I have seen but we will be doing some testing soon
Did you disable the codes? If so, which codes? I want to do a delete as I've been plagued by this system for far too long
Unfortunately with the AP we can no longer disable the codes 😭
@@Smeedia that's what I was afraid of. I've seen some talk about open source tuning. Do you know if that or getting a stand alone would be a possible work around? I've replaced both solenoids, all the relays, and cleared the carbon deposits from the line to no avail. Still getting P2443. After replacing the relays I'm now getting P2444 too. I *hate* this system.
A standalone would definitely work. But I'd look to gling open source first 🙏
How important is that baromectic pressure sensor? The Shop that built my car deleted the air pump but didn't reinstall the Barometric sensor.
You can tune without it but changing elevations or atmospheric pressure will effect how the car runs of your still using a MAF
With the new Cobb green speed rules, my understanding is you can’t tune out the air pump failure code. I want to get a new tune for E85 so I guess my code will now be back and CEL on. Is my only option to get rid of the code to install a new air pump to get rid of the code? Or can I just unplug it or that won’t work with the whole cobb green parameters now? The code I was getting was P0410 which was tuned out so I don’t get the code popping up.
Unfortunately you will need to re install in 😮💨
@@Smeedia gotcha, thanks for the help!!
I have a 2017 STI with a check engine light on! Dealer said it is the vapor canister but that guy is hard to replace do u think that’s the case the code at auto zone says P2402 plz help!!!!!
Definitely a pain in the ass to replace its back above the fuel tank 😖
@smeedia did you have to do anything in the ecu or to the tune?
Just an ECU adjustment
So when you said it's for emissions only it means that without it you wont pass emissions anymore? I live in Colorado and we are up there around California on strict emissions that's why I'm asking
I believe as long as you have the CEL disabled you will pass, I would check with your tuner ND zee what they have to say though
great video. do you need to remove any DTC's for this to work?
Yes there is 1 CEL that will appear. The tuner can disable it though
Hey. Enjoy your vids. Have a question. Apart from throwing the code, there’s no other adverse effects of deleting the air pump to regular drive ability? It’s just used for start up?
Nope 😁 they're just used for emissions control on cold start
Just got p0410 code today. Guess I'll be doing this soon. P244 pump stuck on bank 1. Is bank 1 just the valve or is it the one with the barometric sensor in it? Also is bank 1 driver side bank 2 passenger ? You always got all the answers every subi question I just look up a video you made lol. Your the best
Bank 1 will be odd cylinders so 1/3 bank 2 would be 2/4. Not 100% sure if thr solenoids follow suit but if so it would be the passanger side 🙏🔥
@@Smeedia thanks alot man! Love the videos keep doing the Thang!
Hey man, did you wrap the entire thing with electrical tape or heat shrink? I just did this and don’t know if I should wrap it or leave it like that.
I just left the sensor. Haven't had any issued at all with it 🙌
So deleting the EGR doesn't require a tune? just plug back in the original Barometric pressure sensor and you'll be fine?
You'll have a CEL and need a tune to adjust for it but your tuner can set that when the car is pro tuned
Maybe I missed it. Is tuning required after removing the air pump?
Yes
How did you tune the car aftwrwards
My wrx already has the delete done but it doesnt have the baromtric sensor. Would that be causing my check engine and cruise control light to go off?
You have to tune out the code still even if you delete the system
Awesome content. Keep it coming!!
Thank you! EWG video goes up tomorrow 😁
I have a question please. my car is throuing P2441 becuase the right valve is not working well and need to be replaced. if i keep the sensor and take off evrything else this will solve the problem with the check engine P2441 or i need to make a tuning becuase my car in not tunable
th-cam.com/video/GKyPzLBuGsY/w-d-xo.html
You can remove them and ylull need your tiner to disable the codes
Is it hard to remove the secondary air pump?
Did it ever throw a engine light?
Cant you just leave the solenoid bolted in? Is it necessary to remove it from that housing?
Yes you can, you don't have to cut it out 🙌
Where exactly did you tuck the sensor and what did you do with the wires that connected to the solenoid? Fold them up and wrap it all up?
Plug them all off and removed the sensor out of the car
You wound up removing the whole baro sensor instead of letting it chill in the engine bay plugged in?
Ohhh JK I thought this was EVAP video by bad! BARO sensor i cut out and zip tied the sensor to the AC line. Did not have any issues whatsoever ever and the selanoid for the pumps I wrapped in electrical tape and tucked sway
Ahh, ok. I wanted to delete the solenoids entirely and only leave the baro sensor in the bay. Is that an option? Sorry for all the questions, I've just heard maybe one too many ways on how to do this lol
Tanner: can the AP delete those codes from my ECU mine is acting up now? Please advice. Thanks!
Yes, but you need to take Cobbs access tuner class
Cool. Thanks bro. Still need that stock BPV.
Yeah if you lived down here in California you couldn't have taken that off. Have a good week.
Cool as hell so far!!!!😎👍🏻👍🏻🔥
So have you answered the question of why you went with the fp green instead of the blouch 1.5 or 2.5 ?
$$$$ got the FP Turbo much cheaper, this is also the FP Blue as well 😅
@@Smeedia if money wasn't an issue you said you wouldve gone with the fp black?
Oh yeah, would have sent it to the moon with the black, but since leaving work had to get a more budget friendly turbo so ended up with the blue. But the blue can still.make way more than fht PE Block can handle
@@Smeedia gotcha. Thank you sir.
Does the secondary air pump mess with cold start idle control system.
Yes it will 😅
@@Smeedia so I bought delicious tuning stage 3 e85 kit did the delete also with tgv and secondary pump delete and all over the weekend and the baseman they gave me doesn't like to idle and shows code p050a.
Are the spacers required on the TGV deletes?
No sir 🙏🙏
Hey bro. So I delete my last week and the e vap. And got it e tune. The car ran fine for after 30 min. Then it started to run rich and lean. And It jerk too. Do u have any idea y? Maybe I didnt tighten the block off. Or i messed up the sensor!! Too scare to drive my car now.
Doesn't sound like a vaccumm leak but sounds like a tuning or fueling issue. If it was a vaccumm leak the car would sputter and die at idle
So when you cut out the sensor did the prongs break off?
Yes two of them will break off
Question again sir.😂
When remove the solenoid you cut only the 6 pin or cut it both for the plugs?
Thank you😅👍
You just need the 6 pin plug to keep 😁
Smeedia thank you again 😅👍
Anytime 🔥😁
