There are undoubtedly more accurate rifles around as you say. However a bolt action isn't a semi and I bought this rifle because I was specifically looking for a semi automatic.
@Sgtlaplante Inside the the action at the back of the receiver there is a rubber 'plug' - a buffer. When the bolt cycles rearward it stops against this rubber buffer and the springs then cycle the bolt forward.
@LowOIL Thanks pal. I hadn't heard of using rice. I'd use sand in your support bags as I would assume it would pack more solidly with less air space than rice. I have managed to hole the plastic bags a couple of times, but if you're paying attention they can last - particularly if you double up the bags.
@biblesnbarbells if the mounts you have for your sight are dovetail mounts you can install it directly on top of the rifle. If they are weaver mounts you will need a weaver base. Weaver mounts will not fit on a dovetail base.
@grand778 sounds like your bolt had a dodgy extractor housing perhaps? There will be lemons out there though. I read a lot of good things about the 597 on rimfirecentral. So I decided to get one and it has performed just as well as I expected. No problems.
@HedgehogOutdoors I have no experience with the Marlin but I much prefer the 597 over the 10/22 for size, easier to srip, symmetrical action, accuracy, last shot hold open, overall design - floating barrel etc.
I've found my metal mags work fine. However I have once used cartridges with longer bullets than normal which stuck in the magazine and would not feed. If you are having trouble with certain ammo, load the magazine and tap the base against something hard to jostle the cartridges into position. I don't find this necessary in general as I stick with the same cartridges that I've zeroed the rifle and I have no issues.
WOW-Great review of this rifle. Ive been going back and forth over which type of .22 rifle I want. Either the Marlin, Remington or the Ruger. So far - Im really impressed with the quality look of the Remington and the nice accuracy of it as seen in this video. 50yards seems pretty easy with this rifle - im very curious to see it fire @ 100yards...Thx for the review - I think Im sold.
@Cmitty33 Defiantly the Remington! (but dont get the VTR version its not as accurate and it feels weird in your hand) the remington has 1/4 in groupings at 100 yrds, feels good in your hands, and most of all its fun! its very low maintenance and i have a $140 center point scope mounted on it solid. if you havent made your decision yet make sure you order a target hammer to lighten the trigger pull to about 2.5 lbs!
I'd definitely give it a good clean. The bolt hold open arm is pushed up by the orange plastic follower in the magazine as it rises to the top after the last round. Make sure the last shot hold open arm can tilt up and down against its spring. I'd remove it and clean around the area. There is a little pin holding it into the plastic housing which should be removed but be careful not to lose the little spring that holds it down. Note which way the spring goes before removing it.
i have the cs quad rail (tactical) version and everyone who has a 597 in america dosent seem to use a silencer with it i am using a parker hale and am perplexed as to why no one else's even seems to have a screw cut barrel
Yeah the wind was picking up as you can hear. This rifle makes an excellent varmint rifle. Transferring energy is really relegated to the realm of the bullet chosen. A nice wide and deep hollow point will inflict heavy damage. At closer ranges bullets will bust completely through varmints - (possums - NZ pest for example) but the damage from high velocity hollow points or even round nosed bullets is sufficient to end things quick. I have found .22lr effective even when passing through the prey.
i can't deny that the .22's affordability is amazing. i still have a Ruger 10/22 but i was just saying that i swapped out my 597 for a Savage .17 and i am much more pleased. Yes it is a bolt action and it has never fail me.
I was using federal at first which is garbage ammo, it used to jam the bolt on its way out on random shots. It would actually get stuck between the returning bolt and the chamber. Once i switched to remington high velocity, it worked a lot better....now i switched to CCI stringray which are amazing. Give those a try...
@Cmitty33 Personally I rate the 597 the winner of your list. In all honesty I can't recommend this gun highly enough. The 597 has the advantage over the 10/22 in accuracy out of the box, a good symmetrical action, last shot hold open, more accessible mag release and easier and faster mag insertion/removal design, and imo better stock sizing. It has a flush magazine which is a bonus over the mossberg. You don't want these little mags protruding below the stock to catch on stuff. I like my 597
I just purchased this exact same gun today. It came with a red dot scope. Can I install that scope right ontothe dovetails, or do I need another set of rails?
I have this rifle, and I've found it to be very accurate with the iron sights. But it must be cleaned after probably 100 rounds, or it jams quite regularly. I would recommend getting a Ruger 10/22. However, I got my 597 or only $120 new, so it's great for the price.
Yeah, I was typing before I watched the full video. "Snap caps" would be great. Didn't know about them. I was thinking to load it with an empty and practice on it. Thanks.
I have a few dozen 30rd remington mags. Ive had a few problems with FTL FTE but solved all the issues with loading and unloading them (without firing) and PLENTY of oil. I use a lot of remington oil, you just have to keep a towel handy, but after loading and ejecting them each 5-8 times EVERYONE works flawleesly! Ive had them gummed up so bad its was like grease and still no problems at ALL. You just have to work with them and break them in and use PLENTY OF OIL!
@bigrockslider Would be great fun for target shooting, but it would be unethical as a hunter to try and kill efficiently at that distance. Grouping would be massively affected by wind at that distance. Grouping at 300 meters would be dinner plate +
Yes, it was my first powder burning rifle. I started on an air rifle though, so that was good shooting discipline beforehand. The semi auto needs more discipline to make single shots count rather than just spraying.
@rjreid1958 Any place you can physically hold the gun you should be able to test trigger pull. My trigger pull is quite stiff as is pretty much the standard on modern semi automatic 22's. Harder trigger pulls = less accidents and less court cases. It pulls easier over time as it wears, but it's never been a problem. If a rifle will shoot half MOA at 50 meters, all else being equal the dispersion at 100 meters will be 1 MOA. Not taking into account .22lr bullet peculiarities/velocity issues.
Excellent shooting. Do you think a 22lr can take down a large pig or animal with 1-2 shots at the range you are shooting at? I want to order this gun for where I live, it would be really great if you could help me assess if the 22lr has enough power for this.
@grannman A couple of friends on TH-cam have these, they say they have jamming problems. You mentioned something about it in the first part of the review, I think you said it was only the plastic mags, correct?
How do you test the trigger of a gun your looking at if it's a rimfire. You cant be sending the firing pin up against the end of the chamber as it will put some pinprick dents in it, doesn't it?
i didn't like my 597 so i sold it and got a savage .17 HMR. i love the .17 so much. 2 in. groups at 100 yards is great for small caliber and the .17 does it with ease!
@grannman no way i shoot 300 yards in the summer with my marlin bolt action. it is a lot of fun and it still hits hard. You can plink all day for 20 bucks. i love that and nice grouping
I'm in Canada, I have very few friends who shoot and can help me out. I've just about got my firearms license, and I want to pick up a .22 that is going to be very easy to maintain and mount a scope on. Is the 597 a good choice, or would you recommend a Ruger 10/22 or perhaps Mossberg instead?
You show why they bill the 597 as a "Tack-Driver", where you can nail in a Thumbtack with it's consistency on target with a "warm" barrel. ... Good Showing mate.
I take it your Savage is a bolt action? I have two videos (not uploaded) of a semi automatic Magnum Research .17hmr misfiring in my hands. Very unpleasant and had to iron out a flinch after that. Hard to trust a semi auto in that calibre. Nothing beats the price of .22 ammo though and knockdown is good even though the range and ballistics aren't up to .17hmr level. The semi auto allows a lot of firepower on target in a short space of time also.
@grannman ,in that case then that`s about as good as it gets...i just like to hunt with mine and im gonna put on a 4-12x32 scope on it so i can shoot longer ranges..do u hunt with yours or do u just plink around?
I never really use protection for my ears with this gun its quiet enough for me, but my S&W comp pistol is loud as hell thats when i use protection great gun this is keep having fun man. Love this gun
@cgpQTIP 1. Per part one of this review, dry firing a rimfire by holding the bolt slightly open won't result in the firing pin hitting anything. That will give a general idea of how stiff the trigger is. 2. replace MOA in my comment with inch. That's what I intended. Had senior moment.
Older versions of the 597 were indeed crap but modifications and recalls were made to it. I have a standard barrel i don't know why you would need the heavy barrel really
I've used my 597 to hunt NZ #1 pest the possum and have also shot a number of small wild pigs the neighbouring farmer wanted me to get rid of (rooting up his pasture). Couldn't have got the pigs without semi auto function as one in particular took about 7-8 shots of running fire as it sprinted toward the bush line. The whole thing only took a few moments. It was dead in seconds. I value the ability to dispense follow up shots.
i have the remington 597 and i love this rifle, i have 2, 30 round mags and its a blast to dump 30 rounds in 5 seconds the accuracy is great even with the iron sights and i like the stiff trigger pull...
With less than 100 rounds in the barbell ,it's out of order. The ejector took off in nature . Did'nt got to zero it yet! I'll see after repair. Loader sucks too
get a savage bolt action...i group 3/4 in. at 60 yards shooting down hill...i was using remington bulk pack ammo...but i made them more aero dynamic and accurate by pushing a #9 shot (shotgun bb`s..really small) in the hollow point hole...i shot 10 rounds for that group with a bipod and a 4x32 scope
your groups are just confirmation that this is the next .22 purchase I will make. I'm so tired of hearing about the 10-22 having been created by divine inspiration. The Remington fits me. The 10-22 doesn't. The Remington sights are better too. Way better. It looks like you have beaten back the jamming problem. Sweet!!
I have had mine since September and I did replace the extractor because a poorly seated load blew the extractor out. But it is running fine now. 30 round mags don't always feed right, but I can work through it.
Great shooting! I just picked up one of these rifles and I'm looking forward to giving it a test fire. One suggestion for you.... I noticed you're awfully quick in coming off the trigger after taking your shot. You might consider a bit more follow-through with your trigger finger. Not trying to dis your accomplishments, just a suggestion from a former coach/ NRA Master competitor/instructor. That night help your occasional "flyer". Keep up the great shooting & Vids!!
Properly supported support hand....you are the first youtube gun video ive see actually do that. Bravo sir. Bravo
@grannman I appreciate all your help, it means a lot. I will definitely consider getting one after I buy a truck
@biblesnbarbells if the mounts you have for your sight are dovetail mounts you can install it directly on top of the rifle. If they are weaver mounts you will need a weaver base. Weaver mounts will not fit on a dovetail base.
@mrcancerbero666 I do not fully understand your question. Ruger 10/22 does not have bolt hold open. The Remington 597 does have bolt hold open.
@grand778 sounds like your bolt had a dodgy extractor housing perhaps? There will be lemons out there though.
I read a lot of good things about the 597 on rimfirecentral. So I decided to get one and it has performed just as well as I expected. No problems.
@grannman
Thanks. I think I need the weaver mount adapter.
@Nightmasali34 as far as .22lr is capable. .22lr is generally used within 100 meters.
That is some gorgeous land you got there. Good review too.
I don't find this necessary in general as I stick with the same cartridges that I've zeroed the rifle and I have no issues.
Great shooting! I love the ironing board as a shooting bench.
WOW-Great review of this rifle. Ive been going back and forth over which type of .22 rifle I want. Either the Marlin, Remington or the Ruger. Great review.I chucked a suppressor on my R10/22 and in conjunction w/sub-sonic ammo,it worked wonders when pest hunting.
@HedgehogOutdoors or over tightening the guide rods. Poor ammo might also factor.
@truck090 sustained shooting from a .22 will impact your hearing per the info I've read. When target shooting there's no reason not to wear it.
yes I've heard good things about wolf match. Will have to get my hands on some sometime.
@grannman
Agreed. Lots of shooters claim a .22 isnt loud, but it was louder when they first started shooting ;-)
i have the cs quad rail (tactical) version and everyone who has a 597 in america dosent seem to use a silencer with it i am using a parker hale and am perplexed as to why no one else's even seems to have a screw cut barrel
It is a high profile mount. Originally purchased for my air rifle.

@lonecrow66 Yes .22lr is a must in any shooter's collection.

beautiful scenery

@Cmitty33 Ya i love my 10/22 but Cmitty is right, it lacks out of the box accuracy, but can be easily fixed
Sounds good and you'll always be safe with the bolt action!

got this gun a few months ago from serious shooters for only $300Nzd with scope. only two jams out of 1500 rounds. Great value rifle
@grannman Thanks. I will keep that in mind. Can this rifle compete with the Marlin M60 or the Ruger 10/22?
@grannman A couple of friends on TH-cam have these, they say they have jamming problems. You mentioned something about it in the first part of the review, I think you said it was only the plastic mags, correct?
Looks like a beautiful place to live
How do you test the trigger of a gun your looking at if it's a rimfire. You cant be sending the firing pin up against the end of the chamber as it will put some pinprick dents in it, doesn't it?
Effective range is generally 100m but most people would shoot game within 50 meters.
An ironing board is one of the best and cheapest bench rests you can find. I do that all the time.
Hey grannman.
Class shooting and video yet again.
Nice job mate.
Your friend ukadmin.
i didn't like my 597 so i sold it and got a savage .17 HMR. i love the .17 so much. 2 in. groups at 100 yards is great for small caliber and the .17 does it with ease!
@grannman no way i shoot 300 yards in the summer with my marlin bolt action. it is a lot of fun and it still hits hard. You can plink all day for 20 bucks. i love that and nice grouping
@79Testo I recon it should do the business at 50 meters. Probably further if your shot placement is spot on.
That is a sick back yard! where is this filmed?
You show why they bill the 597 as a "Tack-Driver", where you can nail in a Thumbtack with it's consistency on target with a "warm" barrel.
... Good Showing mate.
15 rounds over here in NZ.

nice, i like what ur using to lean on while firing :]
ahora los magazine remington 597 22 wmr tambien vienen de metal?
do u know if you can fire cci stingers out of it or is it bad for the action of the cus of the hipper velocity round ?
@MultiRackball yes.
I never really use protection for my ears with this gun its quiet enough for me, but my S&W comp pistol is loud as hell thats when i use protection great gun this is keep having fun man. Love this gun
@HedgehogOutdoors I believe so.
@grannman what is that exactly ? never heard of a rubber recoil buffer ?
As in the video, pull the bolt back a few mm and hold it there as you pull the trigger. There's probably .22 snap caps around also you could use.
@cgpQTIP
1. Per part one of this review, dry firing a rimfire by holding the bolt slightly open won't result in the firing pin hitting anything. That will give a general idea of how stiff the trigger is.

@bigrockslider Might be fun but the round is completely impractical at that distance.
I've used my 597 to hunt NZ #1 pest the possum and have also shot a number of small wild pigs the neighbouring farmer wanted me to get rid of (rooting up his pasture). Is this gun made in America? Great review.
o my god where are you that place is beautiful
What is maximum magazine capacity for rim-fires?
hi have u ever experenced any problems with cci standard ammo??? ive herd it hang fires or doesnt fire at all sometimes???
@TheThh New Zealand. Great country.
Nice video. Very helpful. Thanks.
With less than 100 rounds in the barbell ,it's out of order. The ejector took off in nature . Did'nt got to zero it yet! I'll see after repair. Loader sucks too

how far can this gun shoot ???
would u say this is a good beginner hunter rifle
any problems with mag.Remedy?
Just wondering if you had any issues with stoppages or did the rifle fire reliably each time?
10/22 and 597 both great 597 jams a bitt more than 10/22
Great bench rest ;)
wow.you are a good shooter. you are very steady. you can get a 30 round banana clip for it as well
wat size scope mounts are you using? high or medeum?
your groups are just confirmation that this is the next .22 purchase I will make. I'm so tired of hearing about the 10-22 having been created by divine inspiration. The Remington fits me. @grannman thanks
could this gun possibly kill a gopher? need to know planning to buy!
Great shooting! I just picked up one of these rifles and I'm looking forward to giving it a test fire. One suggestion for you.... about 53 yards. 50 meters.
@CousinRandom never had an issue with it not firing, and I've shot bricks of it.
I've got the same gun but with a mueller APV scope on it.
Try wolf match ammo.
Smallest group i've gotten so far is 1/4" at 50 yards(not meters :P)
Is this ironing board?🤓🤓🤓
do you suggest this gun ??
thankyou my man
@crazyidiot27 You have a bit to learn about how ears work and the cumulative affects.
