  • I have decided to upgrade my Remington 597 with a Volquartsen (www.volquartsen.com) target hammer and extractor. It’s not my favorite video but I wanted to do it quickly so that I can take the rifle out to the range. It is not meant to be a super detailed instruction video; there are great videos out there if you are looking for that. If I get enough inquiries I will make a detailed instruction video for you.
The 597 is like new, I didn’t shoot it too much. The times I did shoot it I have like 3 failure to fire per 10 round magazine. Sounds bad but it’s a rimfire and they can be finicky about ammunition. Also, it’s not even broken in so I did not get upset about this.
Anyway, I decided to get some Volquartsen parts plus I wanted to take the change to thoroughly clean it and polish some parts. The polish cream that I used was not the greatest so the polishing job was okay but not really good. I will complete this at a later point.
The avg. trigger pull from the factory was 4.1 pounds and the avg. trigger pull with the Volquartsen parts went down to 2.1 pounds. It’s a tremendous change for the better. I’ll check the trigger pull again after shooting ~1000 more rounds through it. Then the parts should all be worn in and we’ll see if there are any changes in the pull weight.
I hope you guys enjoyed the video and it wasn’t too long. I tried to keep it under 10min but it didn’t work out.
The Volquartsen parts might look expensive at first but they make a great difference and the shooter will profit from it, no matter if you are hunting, plinking or out for a friendly competition.

I just bought a 597. Was very disappointed at the failures. Was also shooting Winchester ammunition. However when I switched to CCI mini-mag ran with no issues

I'm glad to hear that. .22's are finicky regarding ammo and you have to find the right one that runs in your gun. It's just a trial and error thing. In the video I shot RWS and Eley. Both run without issues. Try 40+ grain and let me now how it works out for you. Enjoy your 597, it's a fun little rifle...

The only problem I've seen with a 597 was from Winchester ammo. Runs CCI, and Remington (bucket o bullets) with no issues. Oh and thanks to the internet, I only run the factory 10rd mags.

I had failures with Win, Fed, and Rem ammo. The 597 is not really much of an improvement over the Viper. it just looks better.

I have a 597 and a 10 22 in my opinion out the box the 597 it's a better rifle, if you take it apart dont tighten to much the nuts that screw to the rods because the rods bend and causes most of problems.

I see your problem, your using one of those junk 25 round Remington magazines. Use the standard 10 round and you will not have any problems.

JIM ECKENRODE they are indeed not the greatest mags out there...

I have to take the 30-rnd mags (27 in real life) apart, take the springs out and stretch'em a little, every couple of shooting sessions, in order for it to feed flawlesly (which it actually does if I keep up with the described procedure). Haven't been able to find +10% or-higher-weight springs for those awful mags.
I also ran some strings of sandpaper on the mag's inside front wall, where a lot of glue and plastic residue was getting rounds stuck.

Just going by sound alone, the RWS is obviously better! I use Geco semi auto, even in Bolt actions, very good and cheap.

dasmoose fourfourzero trigger pull weight is reduced and it just runs better overall.

    Quit dry firing a 22 . . . at least slip in a spent 22 case.

Remington allows it for de-cocking but does warn against excessive activity in this regard. One more reason the 10/22 is better.

Have you changed the extractor yet? If not, try that. Also by VolQuartsen is a very nice hammer and MCARBO trigger springs and bushings will reduce your trigger pull dramatically.

so far I have had nothing but problems with the 597. I cant imagine purchasing more parts to make it better. Like putting fingernail polish on a pig. IMHO

howard m Burgers I'm sorry you had such problems. Perhaps Remington has a solution?

I bought twp versions of the 597 (original plastic mag first ed. and a Dick's Sporting Goods OD Green w/no open sights and a scope with zinc magazine). Remington's big failure for decades has been their mags for .22LR. They have not made good detachable magazines since the 1970s. You are better off with a tubular mag on a Remington.
