    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luke Magee: Aha, the magnetic drain plug on a Harley transmission will always gather roughly that amount of debris, it's transmission plug after all, and I've serviced hundreds of Sportsters over the years and that amount of debris is perfectly normal. As long as there are no large shavings on it, or big chips, then it's nothing to worry about, it's just wear and tear.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bad Santa: it's 5,000 mile dirty gearbox oil, it stinks of sulphur and it's contaminated by clutch plate material, all quite normal in a Harley Sportster.

    Looked comprehensive for 5,000 miles. I liked the way the oil got purged after refilling with new. Kinda flushes out all the old oil, good stuff, thanks :)

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks buddy, the little purge of the drain tube is actually laid out in the service manual as a required procedure, because the new oil doesn't fill the tube being so thick, and that long air bubble can then get dragged in to the engine causing momentary oil feed pressure drop, not a big issue, but it's in the manual, so I always do it. Plus, of course, it washed out any residue in the bottom of the oil tank at the same time.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're referring to the primary drain plug, it's quite normal to get some debris from the chain and sprockets that live inside the case, and the oil was greeny/black which is pretty expected after 5000miles, nothing untoward here.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bo mate, there's no simple dodge to that one, testing the accuracy of a torque wrnech requires specialist equipment that is mighty expensive... but if you have a quality torque wrench, it's easy enough to get them re-calibrated, then you know they're right.

      Thats no problem at all buddy, get yourself a genuine HD service manual, that will walk you through any possible unique procedures you need to observe, naturally protect all the mating faces and use those new gaskets observe the torque specs and you'll be fine.. if you're going to drop the primary case off, then you'll need fresh oil for when you refit it. but im sure you realise that. Hi, I have a query regarding the oil to use.Can i use either a 20W - 60 Oil or a direct 60 W oil for my harley sportster ? I live in a country where the temperature hardly ever goes down below 15 degree Celsius and that too for maybe just 1 months where the remaining 11 months it is upwards of 25 degree Celsius. Will a 60 W or 20W 60 help with the heated engine especially when you do a lot of stop and go city riding ?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use a good quality 20W/50 oil, you climate sounds much like England in the summer months, and much of North America too... a good quality multigrade is always better then a single weight oil in a varied climate.

    • @Dude_Virus
      @Dude_Virus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Moonfleet41 currently my Harley is still under extended warranty and as per the rule here the warranty is void if you use third party oils. So for now syn3 is what i get. I was thinking of getting the Amsoil 20 w 60 once that finishes so would it be better than the 20 w 50 ?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dude_Virus 20W50 is fine and more than adequate for your climate.. the higher 60W (being thicker) is to resist much higher climate temperatures, such as maybe 40 degrees C, like in Australia right now, or maybe places like Arizona and Nevada in the summer, but once agin, your climate in Bangalore is much like an English summer, damp, temperate with a max. of about 25... 20W50 is perfect for your bike.

      Here you go mate, a link, this is what we use... it's a light duty super accurate torque wrench covering 5Nm to 14Nm, a little pricey maybe, but it's a precision tool and I use it all the time, you get what you pay for aye?!

    Were you not concerned by that much metal on the sump plug?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the primary sump plug and that's very common mate, it's a chain case and there is always wear between chains and sprockets and in the bottom of the oil sump is where all of that wear swarf gathers, as long as there are no big sharp bits, or ant gritty bits, what's there is quite normal for a bike of this age.

      Good to hear that as it looked the same on my 2001 Sportster 1200 primary drain bolt. Thought it was wear from the gears.

    • @Moonfleet41

      Hello John, 1/2 turn out is big twins mate, Sportsters are a 1/4 turn in from lightly seated counter-clockwise, check it in your manual.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess you're aware if you were a Harley Davidson Technician that clutch adjustment is different between a Sportster and a big twin because the adjustor is fitted from the inside on a Sportster clutch... Sportster is turn out counter-clockwise till it seats and turn in 1/4 turn to give the freeplay, then re-fit the spring nut... on a big twin, it's as you say, turn in until it seats then back out 1/2-3/4 turn, then lock the jam nut... just a different mechanism mate.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, Harley Davidson servicing is every 5k, so effectively the 25k service (if that's genuinely what you're looking for) is a basic '5k service', because the big one is 20k, lots to do, such as critical fasteners and steering head bearing re-pack with fresh grease and many other jobs... so if you've had the 20k done, the 25k is basically just an oil change and a safety check, as in this video. Hope it helps.
