  • A little how-to for the scheduled clutch adjustment that comes round every service, this is so often neglected in DIY servicing because some feel that if the lever feels ok then it doesn't need adjusting.... the adjustment is to the freeplay down in the primary case, its really important, and a really simple job. Enjoy.

I trained with London Transport as a bus mechanic in the 80's the rest is self-taught and experience based on a practical mindset and a mantra of 'how hard can it be?' ...!     Hi there, yeah, some guys can make taking out the trash sound complicated...clutch adjustment is a simple task as are many basic maintanance jobs...and buying the manual is a very good move, read each job you plan to do in the house first, sat with a coffee, and let it sink in.. then take the manual out with you, and just go through it step by step.. well done for getting involved yourself, it will save you money too.. good luck and thanks for watching..     My father has a 1987 883 hugger , the process was the same , but the cable adjustment is located against the primary cover instead of a mid cable adjustment. Anyway he has had harley for 30 plus years and just couldnt get over how well you explained it. He said man that guys a good teacher, he know his s#i" ( stuff) lol. So thanks from both of us buddy.

    Like so many already, I am a big fan. All your videos are so clear and properly broken down. I especially love the fact you give a bit of the logic behind each action.
    1. That being said, when you are adjusting you use the word "seat" I am only assuming here, that you mean gently unscrew as far as it goes before you cannot go anymore, and then a quarter of a turn clockwise. All done
    2. Can I use copper grease for all my torque screws and for that matter for anything that requires grease?
    I am about to go ahead and do my primary oil change , and would be inspecting the clutch as well. Would appreciate your answers to the question above.

      Hi Angad.. Got your questions, an thanks for your kind comments too.. Ok, with the word 'seat' yes, it refers to the screw reaching the stop point where is wont turn any more...no need to twist it hard, just once the screw driver meets a little resistance, stop there and screw back in (clockwise) one quarter turn. And Yes, you can use copper grease, or even the grey coloured "anti seize" would be fine...but only on places that are likely to seize or corrode.... and also always use red rubber grease on rubber seals if you can as it is less corrosive than regular grease of copper grease when it touches rubber...!

    Hi mate, the lever is an after market item made by 'Oberon' and they are adjustable for span to suit smaller hands... nothing to do with easy pull, you just twist the knob and it adjusts how far the lever is from the bar - thanks for watching, mate, Del

The weather is starting to warm up a bit so today i went out in the garage changed the oil and filter , adjusted the clutch , and primary chain . Its been a good day and thanks to you an easy one .     Hi mate...i would say its only really a requirement to use an oil cooler on your Harley if you ride in real hot weather and sit in standing traffic a lot.. but day to day in regular temperatures you wont need it, Harley motors are used to running as they are...changing the oil at the right intervals is important mind..     Hi there, and thank you so much for your very kind comments, i try to make it easy for the average rider, its never that well explained in manuals, and the dealer wont help you unless you pay them lots of money... its bad news that you have had so many problems, but thats life aye?,... if you have any perticular issue i can help with, then just ask and i can make a video if needed.. a slipping clutch is not that hard to sort out, its usually 'wear related'.. let me know how you get on, Del.

And someone wrapped electrical tape around clutch adjust nut " I'm really getting to know and love working on my bike 💖💕 I can't thank you enough I am very greatfull for all the little details you provide for beginners 🌷💖💕🌞I have a 1994 XLH hugger 1200

    Hi David,mate,the job is simplicity itself,the bike uses an 'in-line pressure switch'...cast your eyes in the gap under the left side panel by the fluid reservoir,along the brake hose there you will find a 'T-piece' junction union with 2 electrical wires plugged into it, take the wires off, undo the hose unions either side,bolt and plug the new one in & bleed it through, job done, if you are lucky it could just be one of the wires have come off, good luck with it, hope that helps you, Del

    @roleeesh Hi mate, and thanks for your kind comments. no you can just follow the same steps to change the cable.. open the primary outer plate, you'll see the cable hooked into the clevis on the clutch, just back all the slack right off on the cable, and remove the cable head from the lever at the top, this will give you enough slack to unhook the bottom.. then just back out the nut in the casing, job done, then just install the new one the same way... good luck with it, cheers.     Well, turns out you were right about trying it with the engine running. I had assumed erroneously that putting it in first gear and holding the clutch in was a good way to check for proper adjustment, but it doesn't roll naturally that way. However, once the engine was running everything worked just fine! Thanks again for the video and good advice.

    @1supermanprime YES 100% correct, .. Like i said before and in the video, its natural to presume it winds inward.. but once you see it dismantled you see that the screw is inserted from the inside facing out, when it is mistakenly wound IN.. it has no short term cost, but will slip in hot weather and lead to plate wear... Just to check the cable is slackened enough, poke the head of the cable inside the primary case to make sure it 'jiggles' free of the fork it sits in, hope that help mate..

    It is a very common problem as harley use rubbish fastners, if they just used stainless steel ones it would eliminate it.. but thats common sense, and that would never do aye..lol.. thanks for watching... Del.

    Like the video says mate, slacken off all the cable tension, then BACK THE SCREW OUT UNTIL IT SEATS GENTLY.....THEN TURN IT BACK IN A QUARTER OF A TURN....Then place the lock nut and spring assembly on, and then the Derby cover to hold it all in place... hope that's what you wanted buddy... take care, Del.

    So far, I've adjusted the clutch, replaced the brake pads, replaced spark plugs, replaced sparkplug wires and put a blinding new headlight on my 2010 XL883L...saved mad case AND takes the mystery out of what the mechanics are doing. Simply awesome site!

    No worries mate, you must go with the bolt torque you think right, mostly these days i tend to nip them up hand tight and then a tetch more.. and use marker paint to keep an eye on them...good going, glad you got it sorted out.. Del.

    Hey buddy, thanks for your question... for general maintenence you will find a general tool kit of sockets and wrenches is a good start, also for oil changes, get a 'Kitty Litter tray', holds 2 gallons, plenty for any bike oil change, and a small funnel for refilling, if its a harley, get a oil filter wrench (the 'jar cap' type is best, then get a good shelf of consumables, I.E.Grease, gasket sealant, WD40, spirit wipe, 3-in-1 oil, etc, ..ill PM you a few more bits as limited space here....Del.

    Hi there....if you install any new clutch cable it means backing off all the settings...so yes, just resset all the adjustments as shown here, hook the bottom inside the case, then use the middle bottle screw to set the lever to 3mm of play....and its always worth checking the pack freeplay on the nut too... hope that helps..     I bought my bike new and it’s never been worked on by anyone else but me. And every bit of maintenance I’ve done I’ve learned from your videos. I’m extremely grateful. It’s so hard to find mechanics that will take all the proper steps like you do (like lubricating the bolt threads before torquing them down) and thanks to you, I can do it properly myself and save a bunch of money and time.     Good question... the answer is NO..it wont bottom when you turn it band in a quarter turn, it would keep going for about 5 whole turns....the rule to "back it out till it locks, then turn it in a quarter"..is ti ensure that it is free to move.. you are just 'unlocking' it.. watch the video carefully, and follow that bit explicitly...and you will be fine... good luck with the job mate, go get stuck in...     What a refreshing change to see someone who understands little but important things like tightening bolts in a star pattern. I cringe when I see so called experts tightening bolts in a clockwise or anticlockwise pattern and then have issues such as oil leakage. I use graphite grease on fasteners. Not sure if it's any better than normal grease, just something I've always done.

    Just had to come back to this video when I replaced the cable on my other sporty haha. Found out a neat little trick, if you push in on the plate while you're adjusting with the flathead screwdriver, you can feel it better when it starts to grab.

    Another satisfied customer saying thank you Del! I have an 07 Sporty XL1200, 7K miles. Just got it 6 weeks ago, decided to change the trans fluid, and check the clutch while I was in there. I looked at some other videos and thought I was ready, but my clutch didn't look anything like the others I saw. Thankfully I found yours when I had everything open. I confess I had to do it twice, because the trans was still warm when I did the fluid change. I readjusted the clutch tonight when it was cool, and then took her out for a nice 20 mile stretch of the legs. It's all good! Many thanks from Dave in Pennsylvania.

    I've had non-stop HD issues from rocker box leaks to learning oil changes to now having clutch slipping issues. Your video was THE BEST I've seen nice and close shots, no random cutting out parts (I need to see the entire process). Now I'm going to try to figure out what in the world is going on with my clutch. Thank you very much too bad you weren't near by I've had a hard time finding someone I trust working on my bike I'd love to have you look at it.

    @cl4yd0h You're more than welcome buddy, its a pleasure to be of help.. The design is a bit back-to-front in my opinion, doesnt follow mechanical logic, but thats harleys for yah, lol, and maybe thats why we like them aye.? The 'Foamy gunk' in your primo case was just condensatiion water that has imulsified with the oil, its quite natural and normal, wont do any harm as long as its cleaned out once a year or so..     Hey there buddy....you must do this with the bike 'standing straight up'...not because it has any effect on the adjustment, that's the same either way....but when you take the inspection cover off, the primary oil will pour out. so stand it upright to make this adjustment.. hope that helps matey... cheers, Del.

    Hi mate, i've 178 videos, and about half of them are bike maintenence, have a scroll through the early ones, i did a 5k service on my XR1200, (plugs are childs play).. the first thing you should do is buy a genuine Harley Davidson Sportster workshop manual, get it direct from the dealer, they're a bit over £60, have every job covered, tollerances and settings, and some great exaplainations that are easy to follow, also if your bike is under warranty, speak to the dealer about doing your own work

    Ok so when I adjusted it, I didn't put the derby cover on correctly so I had to change the primary oil since some leaked. I already changed it and it's still doing that. I put one quart in.

    Thanks for all the help. The bike is a 2005 Sportster and I've serviced it with the factory primary chaincase/transmission lubricant. By plates do you mean the ramp assembly (piece with the three bearings inside that opens slightly when twisted?) - that piece is clean and free of debris. Bike operated just fine until I changed the cable yesterday. Hasn't really ever sat for long. I will make a video later if I can't figure it o ut.
