A tip when flying in hyper space in Elite:Dangerous: Place your throttle in the blue zone, and 90% of the time you will be at a good speed and not over shoot. It took me a while to find this, but it's really useful.
I really like the rivalry between ED and SC as it's a very sane and friendly one, both games have a great potential and this rivalry is what can and will make these games at the top of their possibilities.
My pc is a potato so the hope of running even one of them is out of the equation, but I'm sure to follow both games to see how well they grow and blossom.
A friendly competition is good for everyone. The players and the devs.

wtf are you talking about, you get a starter ship when you are in game.. then do what ever you want to raise the funds necessary to go up the ladder, to bigger and bigger ships.. it's a basic thing in gaming..
the game isn't finished anyway.. they are selling ships for arena commander, it helps to provide the money needed to develop the game..

This is the first time I've seen someone use one of those Game Pads for Elite, but it looks super nice. Also, I don't think I've heard of the face tracking software you're using, but it's absolutely getting installed on my PC when I get home. Thanks for the video, man!

So I just got the Logitech 3D Pro joystick yesterday and I already have the Orbweaver keypad. Looks like I'm mostly ready to go. :)
I'm using a Blackwidow hotas at the moment, which is around the same price as the logitech but with proper thrust on it. Plus, since I'm weird and like to map pitch and yaw to the joystick and roll to the flaps, I really like the pedal subsitute on top of the thrust. Works well for me.
I remember playing the game, Elite, on the old Apple II. Oh, the hours of just exploring. And profit, of course. Profit!

If you like the Nostromo for Elite, you should consider the G13. I use it the same way you do except the thumbstick is fully analog with the last software. I personally have the thumbstick set for forward/reverse thrust and left/right strafe so full lateral movement. I think you'd like it.
I like this video. You've pretty much convinced me that my first setup will be a joystick (probably the T.1600m or your same Logitech) and a G13 or Nostromo. I love the idea of having that compact pad to work with instead of fumbling over a full keyboard.
Do you think you could better detail how to make Voice Attack trigger songs to play while you're gaming?

The Thrustmaster T-flight Hotas X joystick is a nice cheap joystick with throttle control that you can pick op for £35 on Amazon. I highly recommend it.

Cool, I didn't realise that there was a new elite out, I'll have to dust off my microsoft sidewinder (which is similar to your nostromo) I think the last 3d flight game I played was "Tachyon the fringe" so may be time for a new game.
yes love that joystick! have an saitek x52 currently, its ok but overall im not 100% happy with it.
Funny, I use the exact same joystick and keypad. I have WASD as thrusters, Q and E as throttle, X as stop, tab as FSD, and caps as hardpoints. I do happen to have an oculus rift DK2 though :P

It will do the job, but honestly in simulators the feel of joystick is really important for general enjoyment of the flight.
Elite is not an arcade game so I would really recommend getting something that at least feels nice.
the lowest of ''usable'' sticks in my opinion is saitek x52 and it's still not ideal,
But if you just want to be able to fight pretty well in elite then this setup is going to allow you just that.

Can i ask what settings are you using for the FaceTrackNoIR program?
Do you have step by step for the face tracking? I have the exact same camera as you so it should work.
Elysium, I'd like to point out that there is a way to make voice attack stop listening. I use it on my setup for STO. By saying Dismissed, the program stops listening untill its called again.
Is the voice from his computer his own pre-recorded voice he set to play when he issues a command or is that part of voice attack profile?
That AI voice... Eat your heart out GLaDOS .V42. Also, playing the 1812 overture would be brilliant when going into battle. Maybe you should make a command for entering battle that will divert power to weapons and skip to the finale.

Damn it!!!!!! I've been a happy consol gamer for YEARS now, having left the world or spending top $$$ on PC's just to play games. Looks like I may have to return.
You don't have to spend top $$$ on a PC to enjoy all the games out there, you only have to spend that kind of money if you want to play @ 4K Ultra getting 144fps stable.
I just got done building my friend a PC that play's ED, Path Of Exile, War Thunder, and many other games at med to low graphics depending. It was less than $100. . .
Purchased a refurbished Lenovo desktop with a Core2Duo, 4gb ram, Win7 Home 64 for $70 shipped, slapped a second hand low profile video card in there for $20 and BAM. a full fledged PC with way more versatility than any console for less than $100.
For the price of a new console ($400) I could build you a MUCH better system, you just have to think outside of the box!
madmax3078 Will my laptop play it though? i5, 8GB Ram, with the maximum 512MB (lol) being pushed to Intel HD4000. I found it "plays" BF4 on low settings......but I ended up ALSO buying BF4 for my PS4 which is a much more pleasant experience. So what does that tell you? REALLY want to play ED though :( I hear it's rumored to be hitting consols but I perceive the community would be much bigger/better on PC.
Chris Winter Wait until it arrives on the PS4 next year, I have heard though that the Xbox One & PC Version use the same backend so all will be playing on the same servers e.t.c , as for the PS4 Version , I Have no idea.
Chris Winter I've heard that ED is designed for as many computers as possible so has MANY options in terms of graphics. If you can play BF4 at all, you should be able to play ED (so I've heard)
CiBi1968 ive seen gaming pc's struggle in the center of the milkyway since it is so dense in there. Im interested to see how the consoles handle that.
My set up isn't exactly cheap but I use a Saitek X52 and track IR or my DK2. The DK2 starts to get very uncomfortable after about 2 hours though I hard;y get to play for that long at one time. Track IR or that camera tracking is amazing for this game and I very highly recommend a Saitek if $150 isn't too too much. It is a phenomenal flight stick and throttle for any flight game though.

You could use the joystick buttons for "Only in an Emergency" situations like "EJECT", "Self-Destruct", "Ramming Speed!", etc... That's three out of six. :-)
This setup would be so easy to do the voice command and face tracking because the connect.

Oh wow , we have the same idea and it does work, yet for the gamepad, I have the logitech G13 version instead of the Razer gamepad that you are using. I using the same logitech joystick as you in both SC and ED game.
Jimmy Dunn Yeah, sadly the Nostromo isn't produce anymore. I hear good things about the G13 though!
EnterElysium It's good. I prefer a throttle peripheral for left hand. Lets me fine tune and is more immersive. Great vid, though.

EnterElysium Every hand is different, but I enjoyed the Saitek cyborg pad, the Nostromo, and the G13. However: If my G13 breaks, that is the day I buy another one. Nothing provides the comfort for extended sessions like the logitech. I can also activate the G20,G21,G22 keys with my palm increasing the number of commands I can produce without moving hand position.

How has the flightstick worked for you? I had one that an old friend gave me, but it was working poorly in windows 7-64. The input was jumping all over the place, and I couldn't even calibrate it.
works fine for me. maybe yours is broken?
For an even cheaper setup, I recommend using either an XBox 360 controller or XBox One controller.
It should also work with a PS3 controller emulated to support XInput, but I've only tested it with the XBox hardware. It's not perfect... a joystick would be a lot better, but it works well enough if you have the controllers spare. :)
all you really need is a keyboard and joystick
and if you already have a keyboard, then the joystick is cheaper then an xbox controller
Oh, no arguments there. I just suggested a controller for anyone who already has a console :) I have a PS3, 360 and X1, so grabbing one of those for elite worked really well
if you already have an xbox controller then I agree with going ahead and using it, I've used mine till I got a joystick.
That's basically what I'm doing, but I just spent a lot on upgrading the rig... so it won't be for a while. :)

Couldn't you map a button that needs to be pushed in order for voice input to be taken?

I am using the Tarzans and its a greAd Keypad!
Keyboard and Nostramo, hardly any difference between the two. Better off using a HOTAS flight stick. No matter what your setup you will still have to access the keyboard at some point. Although it works for you I would suggest that the Nostramo is not required.

Surely the head tracking is very uncomfortable on the eyes? Turning your head whilst focusing on the same point?
is there a way to change the webcam settings in facetracknoir. Cause right now i am on a laptop and it only detects the integrated webcam and not the external webcam. Then i have an issue with actually getting facetracknoir to work in game. I see it tracking in the program but it does nothing when in game. I cannot look around in game at all. Any suggestions?
+Devin Alles (Shadoww) You don't specify your make/model of laptop, that said, you can plug in your webcam and go in and disable your integrated camera. This is system dependent. If it is windows, look at devices and you should be able to do it. Or go into device manager and try disabling it, though sometimes every time you boot, it might nag you about it

I prefer the Logitech G13 gamepad TBH. Better thumbstick and you get a screen too.
Thought of it too, but it was 10€ more expencive and it has less Buttons than the tararus...

You can still get the Nostromo in the US, however it is $200.00 on eBay, more on Amazon. Ouch ! Looking at more reasonable alternatives. But overall, I like your setup and am shooting for something similar.
An alternative would be Logitech G13.
I might be a little late to the party but part of the reason why the nostromo is as much as it is is because afaik it's discontinued and has been essentially replaced by the razer tartarus, which is considerably cheaper and more ergonomic than the logitech gamepad.
could you use FTNIR with your Android Device if you use it as a webcam?
Sound-Sama yes but it took me a while to get it working. You need a program called droidcam and then I had to mess around with some windows drivers before Facetracknoir detected it. Was actually very annoying to setup but the end result was well worth it.

it will work, you move your head but keep looking at the screen, the movement is exponentialy, so when you move your head a little, it moves alot more in game.
i tried it out, but freetrack was just to jerky for me, i will build my own tracking system using ir diots, it should be alot better

You might want to use taskkill for stopping music (like taskkill /IM vlc.exe) to stop useless processes. FYI I have taskkill /F /FI "STATUS eq NOT RESPONDING" bound to a maco key so it would kill any non responsive programs instantly (handy for games crashing and freezing). why dont you use oculus rift?
The only thing wrong with this setup is the head tracking.. it seems pointless to turn my head and swivel my eyes to stay looking at the monitor. Occulus.. yes.. Track IR or other head track no. Left hand keypad is great though because you get so many functions.,. should work well with Occulus because you'd never have to grope for the keypad. I do wish Razer would produce a right hand nostromo ./ tartarus because I am very dominant left handed :( the gaming world is very poor in decent hardware for southpaws,though I do use a joystick right handed for the previous reason I can't use a mouse R/H
