    To those who keep saying "use VR" "get a Rift" etc realize that he posted this video in March of 2015 - there was no Rift at the time (save for the somewhat crappy DK2). Also realize that some greatly prefer setups like this over a Rift as not only is the scale incredible but getting to use all the real buttons and screens ass massively to the immersion. Finally he clearly has enjoy putting all this together and customizing everything he did, all of which is essentially impossible in VR (unless you're a game/software modder). I have a Rift but still prefer to use my 3 27" displays for certain titles, namely Dirt Rally and Project Cars.

      @got_logic1320 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To each their own. I'm the opposite. I ran 3 x 47" TVs for racing simulators, and anything else that can utilize that. Had playseat and ForceFeedback wheel for as much immersion as possible. That is now rendered obsolete by VR, for the purpose of full immersion.
      I agree the button arrangements and such can add to the immersion, and he definitely has an epic setup, but if the purpose is basically feeling like you're completely in the game, I feel VR (when done right) gives the best experience.
      ** I do want to amend another point. Not everyone is comfortable playing in VR, and motion sickness is a real issue. So for people who have a hard time with fast motion VR in long duration, these large screen setups are still the way to go.

    • @ross-carlson
      @ross-carlson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I absolutely agree about immersion in VR, in fact I've built an extensive setup just to accomplish that. Not only VR but a Obutto cockpit, HOTAS/pedals, ButtKicker and Motion seat. If you're curious I wrote an *extensive* guide about it here - forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/287162-Building-The-Most-Immersive-Elite-Dangerous-Simulator-An-Extensive-Guide

      Whoa, that's awesome! No wonder you keep going back to your 3 monitor setup.. you neglected to mention you have a motion seat setup! lol. Great job!

    • @ross-carlson
      @ross-carlson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it's a fun setup. While I like the motion it was a more incremental upgrade than I expected. I'm actually using it more with Elite than racing and it also works with the rollercoaster game No Limits 2. VR + Motion + Rollercoasters = AWESOME.

      There are also people that do not enjoy VR at all, it might be because it causes them nausea or dizzyness, or they just don't feel comfortable to blindfold themselves from their surroundings. There could be so many reasons why not even if this was 2019.

    Very nice. I appreciate the work you put into this. Not sure why all the nitpicking and haters on here going after your spelling and grammar. Others complain about the expense and wonder at your rig versus using the Occulus Rift. It is a personal preference, folks. The Rift is amazing but it isn't for everyone. Locally, here in Clearwater, Florida, we have a flight and racing simulation company that has full mockups of racing bikes, Formula One cars, and several jets, both commercial and military. They charge upwards of $120 an hour. This guy can play 24/7 without an appointment. Don't understand why people can't just appreciate the effort this guy put into his hobby--it's his money.

      I also want to add that motion sickness exists, which makes VR gaming virtually impossible

    • @jack_k2136
      @jack_k2136 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Vincent Blankenburg the good news is developers across the spectrum, commercial, gaming, military, are coming out with better ways to address VR sickness. I am prone to it myself. I got educated and now it's rarely an issue. I keep ginger ale close and limit my time on games that affect me.

    Some people rag on those who build things like this, what they are missing is it's not just to enjoy the games more - it's actually a lot of fun and design and build something truly your own and it does not necessarily cost that much depending on what you decide to build but my point is, it can be as fun or even more fun building and tinkering with soemthing like this than playing a game on it - Bravo on your cockpit sir - o7

      +Gustavo R. Dreyer It has an option that does just that. It prevents the game from focusing on the left/right displays when you activate them; They just pop up where they are. It's meant for VR Headset users, but it works just as well for triple display setups.

    Pretty cool.
    I had a dual projector setup to play Fallout 3 and Vegas like this back in the day. Projectors were on camera stands (two cheap Benq GP1's) and every few days i had to realign them, so i get why this is a nice experience. When asked, i told my friends that i measure my screen resolution in square meters, not pixels :)
    After a while suddenly the left projector "died" and went all green, after than i went back to single screen. Now i got a larger single LED projector for browsing and streaming, and gaming is 100% VR. I just wish the FOV was better in VR, really miss that.

    Very nice! great work! And yes regarding TrackIR...when I had a 160deg setup I did still use TrackIR to look up (fly more simulations) but that also meant left and right became only a peripheral view since the image was turning towards me. In Elite you can get away without looking up so I agree this doesn't need TrackIR. Except maybe a gentle vertical only unless looking right or left affects the vertical curves then too much.

    This is very cool, you totally remind me of my days when I used the steel battalion setup for that game on the original Xbox ; having allot of physical controls really do add up to immersion; especially with this kind of screen setup. I thought you had no head-tracking at all because you have so much vertical space in your screen setup that you thought it wasn't nescerry, But looking at your description you still have it. I think head tracking makes it more immersive (especially the way the holo UI compensates for your location in say the docking menu etc.) and just all-round helpful fighting nimble fighters. The bass speakers in your seat is amazing, reminds me of how they did that kinda stuff in 80's arcades !
    Now, control is something that's very very personal. Everybody has a different preference. Personally, between the X52 Pro and the steelseries keyboard (have the same one) but even just the X52 itself ; you should have more than enough mappable buttons to leave your hand on the sticks at all times during dogfights. Navigating to and from left and right holo; can be done really quickly on the stick. You also have head-tracking which can activate left or right holo menu's.
    I think for competitive play; your hand gestures for the left & right holo; and some other things you use the control panels you built for (i.e quickly having to switch your hand from stick to panel and back) is a bad idea against advanced players where you can't afford that time lag.
    That's my only two cents ; as i said. Control is personal so I respect your space :)
    As pointed out by some other people, I'd love to see them release an API for the controls 3rd party software could interface with.

    Messed with a little stuff like this and felt brilliantly obsessed but maybe ill also. This makes me feel quite normal.I once got called a space-cadet by the top jock and many wedgies followed. Permanently damaged? Nope-thanks to Markus. A little bind here, a little notes/diagram there. A quick homemade mount maybe, a button riser- I'm fine doc. My eyes are a little watery cause I'm normal and cause the Markus project invokes a Star Trek flashback=Ensign Harry Kim: I think it's safe to say that... no one on this crew has been more... obsessed with getting home than I have. But... when I think about... everything we've been through together - maybe it's not the destination that matters. Maybe it's the journey. If that journey takes a little longer, so we can do something we all believe in, I can't think of any place I'd rather be, or any people I'd rather be with.

      I used my trackir with my 3 screens, I still prefer the one. Granted, the 3 were 24 inch and the one is 40 inch. It was cool, It gave a bit of immersion, but the one is better for me. You never actually look at the side screens since they're so distorted from the FOV, it's all for periphery. It's a lot of money to spend when VR headsets are coming out soon. BTW, elite with oculus is the way to go for sure. It's incredible.

However, bit jealous that I dont have it but wont be able to use it as you just put some passion into it and enjoying your hard work. However, this would be fun if the ED guys wont bring enough content to this game, hence after 1700+ hours I am missing community goals and some other things. To explore there is more than enough all humanity until next 10 decades :)

    This is amazing. Totally gloriously bonkers, but that's part of the charm. The only way it could be better is if the side panels could be made to show on the outer monitors, rather than have them shift to the front screen. Probably not possible, but being able to look left to the panel without it filling the main screen would be the immersion icing on the cake.

I think they are working on the meta-game factions and whatnot stuff right now...you know the stuff I am not that interested in, ha. I am sure some people are loving it.

    I have VR and i can say its way better in SOME ways but not all. Set ups like this will always appeal to people because we like to see out hardware and make it all pretty and enjoy it lol but seriously well done dude and im well jelly. Sub well earned for amazing imagination. Just a thought but what would be amazing is if we could get to the type of tech that uses both VR and real life and mix the two, i know its called mixed reality but what i mean is we wear a VR headset then we can choose to let the camera see say our dashboards and instruments in real life but in VR. If you get what i mean, like you can play in VR but still see you own real instuments and interact with them like how it looks when VR TH-camrs use a green screen to mix real with VR but thats a long way off i suspect

    It would be more courteous to turn ship lights on after getting docking clearance to help people going in / out of the station. Then turn them off as you have landed to not blind the ground crew. Reverse this on exit. That's what I do.

    What I would eventually like to see in a setup (and in compatibility with 3 monitors) is where you can have head tracking, but the screen position stays the same. When you look at the left screen the left UI opens, and the same for the right. But instead of tracking the position of the camera in game, it just makes the UI open on the side of the screen, so that it feels more natural as a cockpit.

    • @MarkusBoesen
      @MarkusBoesen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ChasterBeef Hi, there is an option in the graphic settings of ED to get the demanded screen behaviour and combined with a special head tracking software You can use it like You want. But unfortunately the screens are placed at the sides and the ED-Field of View ist mostly to the front, so You´ll never see a side screen completely. Too bad!

    • @masteircheef
      @masteircheef 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Markus B. Could you still tell me which setting this would be, and how to set it up? I'm still new to Elite Dangerous so I don't know all of the settings yet. Thanks for telling me anyways!

    Very nice rig. My last simulator was similar, and included 4 networked PCs and a 7 foot screen. But once I tried ED in VR, the old simulator became moot and was disassembled shortly after. VR makes the best simulator seem...meh. And I say that even tho my last simulator actually had a working HUD and touch panel controls.

    This is the reason more ambitious games should use some kind of API for in game functions like targeting, systems etc. we just need something more than standard button maping.
    For instance i would REALLY like to have direct command for powering ON/OFF each subsystem on the ship. just imagine being able to script power On / power OFF actions when selecting a weapons group.
    Or be able to have 'launch chaf/ launch shield cells' as a function outside fire group.
    In addition a protocol to send out data/image from screens like holos/ radars etc. and being able to disable them from ingame cockpit

    • @bodyguardik
      @bodyguardik 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Przemysław Wilkutowski you can bind chaff and shield cell to any buttons in control configurations as I remember

    • @pwilkutowski
      @pwilkutowski 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bodyguardik
      Ture - noticed this not so long ago :)
      Nevertheless i would like to have mappable 'slots' for your internal components that can be 'programed' for certain behaviors, this way you could switch to ie weapon group 2 and turn of your group one or other components.
      or map shield boosters ON/OFF depending on your shields status

    • @lilmurfer
      @lilmurfer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Przemysław Wilkutowski read my bloody mind when i saw this video. would be nice if devs of online games can figure out how to expose interfaces to information/status services without compromising to cheats. The amount of augmentation players would be willing to implement is limitless.

    • @MarkusBoesen
      @MarkusBoesen  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inphi Yes, that would be great...But I would even be happier if Frontier would make the controls more customizable. I can´t believe, that I can´t activate an ECM or Scanner or missiles only by switching through firegroups like I would playing with an XBox Controller...
      And YES, If they would provide the information of the side panels with an API, I would display them in separated screens around me too. Imagine the immersion if You could youse the side panels in tablets with touch interface...
      But first of all Frontier should implement a persepctive correction for Multi Monitor setups!
