  • Stylosa shows off his new entry level HOTAS, the T.Flight Hotas X by Thrustmaster playing Elite: Dangerous. For the price, this is one hell of a setup. If you are considering going the HOTAS route, then think about giving the crazily cheap T.Flight Hotas X - Thrustmaster a shot!

    Every time I saw this when searching for a HOTAS, I always skipped it because I thought it was stupid that they are bolted together.
    Now I feel like an idiot.

    In regard to the number of buttons: One thing that's rarely ever mentioned is that you can use any buttons as "shift keys", so to say. For example, in the group of three buttons under the thumb on the throttle, I have two functions assigned to each of them, using the upper button under the index finger on the throttle unit as the "shift key".
    1st button: FA on/off, with "shift": boost
    2nd button: Fire chaff, with "shift": apply shield cell battery
    3rd button: Fire heat sink, with "shift": toggle silent running
    That way, the functions are even grouped in a way that makes sense: navigation, combat support, heat management.
    Thanks to the "shift button" I have four functions assigned to the coolie hat: Without any combo, it's used for strafing sideways and up/down (using the rocker on the throttle for lateral rcs thrusters; very useful for parking and picking up cargo), with "shift button" for managing energy, with the lower index finger button on the throttle for UI focus (going through panels) and with head look enabled (the thumb button at the bottom of the throttle) for... well... head look.
    Still, even with such possibilities, some things will just have to remain on the keyboard. In my case it's rotational correction (never had to use that one so far, anyway; I guess it's most useful for Type 9s), jettison all cargo as well as all the switching through the target lists (all/enemy/subsystems), which I have on the block of six keys between Insert and Page Down. All that stuff can be controlled through the panels, which is what gamepad users (hello and welcome, XBoxers!) have to do, anyway, but as a PC user, I certainly appreciate the availability of all these direct key bindings.

    I recently ordered my first HOTAS for War Thunder and this video was great to see how its used in Elite Dangerous, as I never really thought about how can HOTAS be used in space sims. I think I very well might return to playing Elite Dangerous as my HOTAS arrives, I really like the fact that using HOTAS in there isn't restricted to such a dead game mode as simulator battles.

    I have this joystick and I do play Elite Dangerous. Yes it does feel cheap, and the axis on the back of the throttle feels very loose and nasty. But this HOTAS is absolutely brilliant, It cost me £33, and I haven't been happier.

      When you say cheap, do you mean bad quality or more arcady? While I may buy this, and will probably play Microsoft Flight Simulator X, I like the arcade feel. If it was a £150 Saitek Rhino (or whoever make it) I would also most likely buy a new GPU, Oculus Rift, Star Citizen and a new hard drive for it.

      Austin Buxton I only have the T Flight Stick X, so the non hotas version because I wanted to save a little bit of space on my desk and it works perfectly fine as well - I did lubricate the throttle slider to get more fluent movement out of it, though. Really good gaming experience and I don't miss anything.

      erdio z It was actually quite funny. My mate bought up his Black Widow for me to try out. For the life of me I couldn't get accurate aiming. And while he was here a while later my Thrustmaster arrived. The look was priceless. Hope you get your stick soon :) I find the centre point on the throttle fantastic. Very easy to tell when you are at neutral throttle. Another thing the Black Widow doesn't have. The ability to separate the sticks is great for a flight stick at this price, and not forgetting the ability to lock the twist. Although that is great for ED.
      It's the first time I have found the twist use able. It is awful on my Force 3D.
      I found a very good button mapping for the Thrustmaster too on the Elite Forums. I'll send you a link :)

    Thanks for the review. I've been playing ED for about a week and I dusted off the Logitech Extreme 3DPro but was unsatisfied with the ergonomics. Reaching across my keyboard to adjust throttle, landing gear etc. was giving me a pain in the neck after a couple hours. For the money, I was looking at the T.Flight HOTAS X but couldn't find any good images or reviews of how it worked actually flying. Your video helped me decide. Thanks again.

    I used this stick during my time playing IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. The paddles on the throttle were perfect as my rudder controls as I don't like the twist on a stick motion. I think it had the right amount of buttons (for IL-2 1946) that served functions essential to combat. Everything else non-essential to combat stayed on the keyboard. Would recommend this for any person looking for an entry level stick\throttle
    udder that didn't break the bank.

    I've been using this stick for a while and it's definitely worth it for the price. The only real fault I have with it is the zeroed position on the throttle feels very clunky and sticky. Other than that, it's great. Ok, it doesn't have a huge number of buttons, but if you set up properly, you can get pretty much all the functionality you need on just the 12 available buttons. I also started using Voice Attack yesterday, and the combination of HOTAS and voice control make ED so much easier to control and so much more immersive!

  • @Badjoe117
    @Badjoe117 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Having a HOTAS really helps in different types of flight games so that you can reach different buttons quickly without taking your hands off the controls. And that looks like a good joystick for it's price, a bit hard to tell as a viewer of course.

He's been impressed with how fast I've been docking and getting out of fire fights for my play time but honestly I think it's all in the stick. So I bought this stick, I'm trying to map my Elite Dangerous controls, and I'm running into a weird issue. It seems like it registers a button press on the upstroke, which is making shift keys very difficult. For example, I have button 9 mapped to toggle "Flight Assist," and holding 9 while using the hat moves to the different panels. I've noticed, however, that when I move to the panel and release the button, it still toggles FA mode. It didn't do that kind of thing with the Xbox 360 controller, so is there a setting on the T.Flight somewhere that I missed?

    Even though it feels cheap, as long as it can give you the start feel of a HOTAS and if it is for you, then i personally want to buy one as i've never used a hotas before and wanna make sure it's the sort of controller/games i want to get into. CAuse elite dangerous was a bit too wobbly for my taste with a mouse.

    Ages ago i purchased the old Thrustmaster Top Gun Fox 2 Pro and i still use it when i play simulators hehe! It hasn't the separated throttle (there was a version with it but was more expensive) but i still love it because i can instantly go 0-100 or 100-0 with the move of a finger (thumb or index), the slider is comfortable and i can quickly reach the keyboard if i need without the bulky thing in the way :) It's more or less like the T.Flight Stick X but with few less buttons.

    This is great on a budget, but if you have money to spare, the Saitek X52/X52 Pro is one of the best I've used with E:D. One of my favourite things is the fact that it's actually very close to the in game models, and with my plans to get a VR headset eventually, that feature will just make the VR experience that much better.

      I have the same joystick and like the guy in the video, I bind lateral (left-right) thrust to the paddle on the front of the thruster. I thought about binding up-down to the two buttons on the front of the thruster, but I bought Voice Attack and use voice commands to control up-down thrusters. VA is seriously worth the few bob it costs for the full version, i even use it to remotely voice-control my PC now too.

    I am thinking of getting one along with Elite Dangerous next pay day, but I'm just seeing if any other games I play have support for this - Planetside 2 being one of them. If you've tried this yet with Planetside 2, how does it play? Great video also, straight to the point and you don't waffle on about the features for 15 minutes like some other videos I've seen on this. Good job!

    For some reason, the stick twisty sensor and that switch thing on the throttle that lateral thrust was bound to are the same axis for me. I can't bind them to separate functions. Any ideas?

    This is great. I am a little concerned about durability. The stick is not smooth as it was in the beginning. Its been a little more than a week since I owned it.The negative that there aren't enough buttons is wrong as you can combo button and create a different command. I don't need to touch keyboard except when closing the game.

    I had been playing Elite Dangerous with an XBOX 360 controller until yesterday when the Thrustmaster t-flight HOTAS which I bought from Amazon arrived... and it does make a big difference. It took an hour to get used to it and is going to take some time to tinker with the setup but I can already see a world of difference. You just have much better control over everything (better control over throttled, pitch, roll) compared to the XBOX controller. I might be able to think about using fixed weapons instead of gimballed weapons now. So I would recommend one of these.

      I'm also using the xbox controller, and waiting on this. Glad to hear it helps. I tend to want to push the thumbstick on the xbox all or nothing, and the joystick will give me more finesse. Hurry up and ship amazon!

    • @mjashmore1
      @mjashmore1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg Dale Yes.. that's exactly the problem with the XBOX 360 controller.. difficult not to push the thumbsticks all or nothing. The joystick (and throttle control) just give so much better control over this.

      Have you guys actually tried using VoiceAttack ? its really handy when it comes down to xbox controller, i have been using it both, and its so easy!
      The commands you give in are quickly recognized, and it gives you so much spaceleft for programmable buttons on the keyboard; example: program "L" landing gear, all you have to do is say: Gear, Landing gear, deploy/retract Landing gear, anything you want really.
      Been using it since I bought Elite:Dangerous and its really usefull.

      Matt Ashmore I'm also using a controller but while I don't consider it great I'm also not struggling at all with the game. Been bounty hunting mostly and get kills pretty easily. Love the idea of a HOTAS but do you think getting one is really worth the learning curve? I'm just thinking, I'm fine without one, should I bother?

    is there a z-axis on the joystick itself? Not just the 2 buttons on the throttle?

    • @koffieslikkersenior
      @koffieslikkersenior 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christopher Banacka Yeah want to know this as well

    • @Nephilus1
      @Nephilus1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christopher Banacka I also have a T. Flight HOTAS X, so hopefully I can help out here.
      In addition to the Joystick's standard X and Y axis, it does indeed have Z axis, for rudder/yaw functionality. In addition, on the throttle base there is a button that is by default green but when pushed turns red, switching between the two colours upon each press. When the light is green, the rocker switch on the throttle control provides a separate axis of movement (ideal for lateral thrusters if you play Elite Dangerous.) When the the light is red the rocker switch duplicates the 'rudder' axis of the joystick.
      I cannot emphasize enough how much extra immersion this thing gives you. Yes it's cheap and not ideal if you are a hardcore flightsim player, but it is ideal for those players who occasionally dabble with flight sims or want to try out a HOTAS setup without spending 100 plus on a joystick and throttle or simply cant afford laying down that kind of money. I was given this for my birthday and I have never stopped using it in Elite Dangerous since then.

      Human Duracell I bought it about a week ago and I'm also very pleased with it. I personally use the rocker for changing tabs in Elite. It's quite strange to having to relearn all the controlls. I had pretty much mastered the controller. It's back to gimballed for a while :)

    • @ChozoSR388
      @ChozoSR388 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Christopher Banacks
      The axes on the stick are: X (Typically Roll), Y (Typically Pitch), RZ [Rotational Z] (Typically Yaw)
      The Axes on the Throttle are: Z (Typically Throttle), and the rocker, which depending on the color of the LED (when in PC mode), works as either RZ (Typically Yaw when the LED is red, or when the HOTAS is in PS3 mode), or Slider 0 (Could be anything, when the LED is green).
      It should be noted that when the switch on the front of the stick portion is in PS3 mode, the Axis Mode button functions as the PS button.
      When Switched to "PC" the Axis Mode button puts the HOTAS in either Four-Axis or Five-Axis mode.

    been using an old wireless Saitek Cyborg eclipse joystick for ED (originally got it for Arma 1 all those years ago) its works great with it but it started to fall apart from the combat in ED. so now just purchased the above

  • @rurallawwildwest9679
    @rurallawwildwest9679 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a Saitek ST290 Pro and bought the T.Flight. I love the throttle, but the joystick just didn't have enough buttons, so since Elite allows multiple inputs, I use the throttle and the ST290 together. Even if I use a button on the throttle as a modifier, it just felt short on buttons to me. If you are not already using a joystick, it may be great for you. A hat for the thrusters on the throttle would have been nice, but for the price, it greatly improved the experience.

    Hey there, if anyone reading this owns this HOTAS, I'd like to know the exact length of the wire connecting the flight stick unit and the throttle unit. I want to know if I can keep my keyboard between them and play. I've only used the X55 and they have separate cables for each unit, so I don't know about this one.
    Cheers!

    • @GeekVFood
      @GeekVFood 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Akash Menon Not sure if you've found your answer yet, but there is roughly 2 feet of length between the throttle and stick, plenty of room to fit a keyboard in between (I have a G510 and it fits between them)

    I have a similar stick the Thrustmaster T.Flight Stick X. It's a lot more uncommon, but it's a similar design with way more buttons (12 buttons total) and no throttle included, although I also bought the separate Thrustmaster TWCS throttle (which is also a full size throttle to the X series of Thrustmaster products). Personally, I'd recommend that as opposed to the T Flight Hotas X, since you get more buttons and more devices are a lot heavier and provide more weight.

  • @dazzrs-uk5708
    @dazzrs-uk5708 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have found that using combo of buttons is very affective on ED, especially using the 2 buttons on the trust index finger location. hold them and you can pretty much triple up all your buttons easily

    • @dazzrs-uk5708
      @dazzrs-uk5708 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a note I recently had an issue the bindings (when you manually set the buttons to do something) which did not work correctly. In my case the pre-mentioned index finger buttons, were deciding to boost instead of what I had assigned (not great in a space station). After faffing around for ages, I swapped the USB port.. this fixed it straight away. No idea why it screwed up in the first place, as before I swapped it back, the TM HOTAS driver tests showed the buttons were all working fine
