      @@johnbrereton5229 The EU is not a dictatorship. You have to be really badly educated to think so. You are not much of an advertisement for the benefits of a British education are you? All EU parliamentarians are elected sorry, no dictators. Britain, on the other hand, has almost 700 unelected parliamentarians and an unelected Head of State and even the minority who are actually elected are elected by an undemocratic 'first past the post' system. Britain is far, far from being a democracy by any standards. Britain even has an unelected bureaucrat who sits in Cabinet no less, Lord Frost the whiskey salesman. There are no unelected bureaucrats in the EU either.

      Honda doesn't want a bailout. This was announced in 2019, it was a strategic decision to not invest close to a billion pounds in transforming the plant to produce electric cars for the future. That is the issue, the transformation between old and new cars. It makes economic sense in their eyes not to proceed. However, a large US firm is spending £1 billion pounds on building a large electric car plant in Somerset. So there is a market for private investment.

      Philip Crossman, the former Honda UK managing director and now automotive consultant, told Autocar exclusively that there were five key reasons for the decision: the global shifts in car sales, a dramatic fall in Chinese sales, the Japan-EU trade deal, Brexit uncertainty and - of course - the need to invest in electrification. Good evening hasse102 - I can comfort you, Swindon will survive. We in Germany had even more drastic changes in the steel industry at the end of the 70s,. The dimensions were more crucial, a town like Hattingen (Ruhr area) lost 6,000 workers. I think the population was 25,000 - The state was not ready to help as the decline of the steel industry could not be stopped.
      When the factory gates opened at Hoesch in Dortmund in the afternoon thousands of workers left to go home - this has all gone.
      The restructuring is painful, Hattingen today is a very nice town, most people are employed. It will take a bit longer in Dortmund as a town with with 600,000 people has to invest a lot in its infrastructure.
      Wish you all the best.

    Oh Dear; it seems as though someone is being a bit economical with the truth here?
    Honda told their workers that they were closing the plant in 2019; three years ago? The (BBC) reporter was trying to make it look as though Honda announced the closure suddenly in July 2021?
    Honda only build the Civic at this plant and they want to concentrate on building electric cars, hence the closure; although I don't know why they don't adapt the existing factory to build electric vehicles?
    As far as I know; Nissan are expanding their existing U.K. factory to build electric cars, and they are concentrating on the 'Home' market(Japan), the U.K., and Australia?

    To the morons who only understand Brexit & nothing else try to understand the actual reasons behind the closure & not just your sour grapes.
    Honda simply doesn't have the market share in Europe or the UK to justify the plant anymore.
    The writing as been on the wall since line 2 was mothballed.
    Nissan have had huge demand for their Qashqai & Juke models in this part of the world, hence they are staying put.
    Please try to explain away BMW expanding & remodeling their Mini pressing plant in Swindon at the same time Honda were winding down?
    Or the EV start up Arrival, based in Banbury going from strength to strength, or the possible new factory for Rivian being started in the UK?

    • @alvinburrell
      @alvinburrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kincaidwolf5184 Do you know, I actually think we are both kind of right; Honda announced this in 2019, so they were aware of the Brexit decision. Like Nissan, Honda stands to benefit from a new trade deal between the European Union and Japan, which will make it easier to produce cars in Japan for export to the bloc. Honda has though a manufacturing plant in Belgium which will likely stay open so they can keep the European operation sweet.

    • @kincaidwolf5184
      @kincaidwolf5184 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alvinburrell But again, the CEO said it was nothing to do with Brexit. The real issue seems, is Honda do not want to pay 100s of millions needed to transform the old plant, to produce a new line of modern electric cars. I mean, Honda sales have collapsed generally in Europe. Honda is in free fall with the number of cars sold in Europe. It has nothing to do with Brexit, but a longstanding pattern that Honda cannot compete with other companies. Read this article: www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/swindon-factory-closure-how-honda-got-europe-so-wrong If you read up too, you can see Honda plan to produce all their cars to be a 100% electric by 2025, and they plan on producing all these in Japan and exporting them to the UK. Honda biggest market is by far the UK, selling more in the UK than the entire EU combined.
