It looks like these people regret voting for Brexit because it affects them personally. I take it if this was happening to people in a town in Scotland and not affecting them at all, they would still be championing Brexit.

What has changed is the willingness of many people to do that work. They prefer to live in cities and work in car washes. There's no shortage of labour there.

No. The company made official statements years ago warning of the potential consequences so these employees did not need to read about the potential consequences in rags like the Mail or Express, all they had to do was read from their inbox or company website . The media forget to report on Ford Motor Company being shut down in 2013. I,300 jobs lost. The E.U gave Fords 80 million to move to Turkey. We nearly lost our house and now have to work 7 days a week. I voted to Leave and would rather put a hole in my head than vote Remain.
I can't imagine why anyone working in this Honda factory producing Japanese cars for the European market would think Brexit was a good idea for their job security.

Most people don't understand how global economy works today. They don't realize that 4 out of 10 products in every supermarket are produced abroad and that 5 out of 10 are produced within the country but require to import at least some ingredient, production tool or package material from abroad to make it happen. Only 1 out 10 products does not require anything from abroad at all. Now just imagine, what supermarkets would look like if 9 out of 10 products would be gone tomorrow. And considering this, why would anyone vote for "let's make importing goods as hard and as expensive as possible" be a good idea? But people don't realize that so much stuff comes from abroad. And if you think supermarkets are bad, supermarkets are actually the stores with the most products produced in country. Don't even get started about clothing, electronics or cars. In every UK household are more goods that were produced outside of UK than inside of UK. The way how this works is by UK itself exporting their goods to other countries, and again, why would vote for "Let's make export as hard and expensive as possible", when this export is a major source of income for at least half of all employers in the country? I know so many Germany companies that used to purchase products from UK and now the all switched to other EU countries instead as it just takes too much time and is too expensive to keep importing them from UK.

I'm from Swindon and the town was fully behind Brexit. The towns death has been fast tracked by Brexit and the town becoming a safe Conservative seat which is just beyond idiotic for a post industrial town.
In New South Wales, Australia the Nationals are deliberately ruining small towns to make sure young people don't move there. Their older audience in the area votes for them out of tradition and a fear that they're the least bad alternative. Without young people their seat is safe. Wouldn't be surprised if that happens elsewhere

Elsewhere on the web you can read about the average adult reading age in the U.K. being 9. It isn't a figure plucked out of the air for shock value, though shocking it surely is, it comes from ongoing research that shows our reading age reducing over time. Why is that? Is education being deliberately de-prioritised so that only big slogans on buses and sound bites from clown-like politicians are widely understood? A 9 year old wouldn't have read, nor have been able to comprehend, the available information from those pre-Brexit discussions. What I'm positing here is that a great number of people have far lower thinking capabilities than we might like to think. That doesn't make them bad people or stupid people, it makes them the victims and thereby the tools for those powerful people in who's interests Brexit was fashioned.

*Hello from Swindon, the plant has closed 3 weeks ago and there is the news about all it’s production line buildings set to be demolished later this month. The town which supported Brexit is now truly facing the reality. No one is seeing what is really happening in Swindon, pubs getting closed, big retailers moving out of the town centre, staff shortages, growing unemployment. This is the sad truth. As the woman said, the more focus of these Tory ministers were to get Brexit done for pride and their own satisfaction and never for Britain to be on the forefront.*

I guess it's difficult to make a strong argument about Brexit bringing unemployment, when unemployment - up to the start of the pandemic - was at a record low. Since the pandemic, everything is sufficiently unclear to allow everyone to draw the conclusions that meet their worldview. Remainers point to a skills shortage which will slow the economy. But Leavers point to this pushing-up wages.
I've had quite a surprise, to be honest. I'm someone who left the UK because I couldn't stand the stench of Brexit Britain. I want to see Leavers learning their painful lesson. So when I saw the UK government haemorrhaging money in the pandemic, acting with corruption and incompetence which was resulting in tens-of-thousands of excess deaths, I have to derived a good deal of Schadenfreude. I thought the government will be bankrupt with its 'Brexit war-chest empty, and unable to camouflage the damage of Brexit. I was looking to Britain going cap-in-hand to the IMF for a bail-out, like in the 1970s.
But it's not really worked-out that way so far, has it. Despite everything, even the party of this Brexit government is still comfortably ahead in the polls. Does it just take time? At any rate, I think the signs have to be much clearer. I'm looking for unambiguous, undisputable evidence of the failure and the poverty of Brexit. I think it's going to take orders of magnitude more bad news before Britons are ready to concede their mistake, and be humbled enough to rejoin the civilised international community.

In 2004, I bought a Honda Civic in the US that was made in Swindon. That's right, Honda exported British-made Hondas to the US on occasion.
Extremely easy decision for Honda to make. The Swindon factory made sense so long as it was in the EU. Once it was just in some random country outside of the EU - made no sense.

Honda have actually been experiencing problems for many years now - saying from before the Brexit vote. The company have severe financial problems regarding their car division. It's motorbikes that are keeping them afloat.
They used to sell loads of cars in the UK. Ten years ago it was common to see alot of Honda cars on our roads - especially the Civic. But no one in the UK is buying a Honda anymore, and there are fewer Honda cars on Britain's roads now. When was the last time you saw a Civic? ....or an Accord?? Exactly.
No one is buying Honda now. Like Renault, Citroen, and Peugeot - they are among the biggest loser's over the last decade.
The winners are manufacturers like Kia, Skoda, Dacia, Jeep, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes.

You had a responsibility to do your homework, consider the validity of the information you were being presented, assess if you had a full picture or if there might be other risks. It was so obvious that there were other risks, particularly for people in jobs that rely on Europe. I work for an airline that exclusively flies around Europe and to and from the UK. The world is shrinking by the minute. Many contemporary problems are of global nature (environmentally, medically, socio-economically, etc.) and the belief to be able to solve them singular on a national basis is at least naive.

Someone's forgetting about all of the subsidiary companies that make parts for Honda cars. I bet hundreds of companies will be effected by this, not just the Honda workers. I've been trying to be understanding since 2016 and have seen very few examples of genuine regret from the people who voted for Brexit. There have been a very few people who have publicly raised their hand to admit they were wrong.
Instead, the people who did vote Brexit despite knowing now what it has done to their future prospects, are doubling down on their decisions. They're blaming the EU, they're still blaming immigration, they're using words like "woke" and "communism" to divert blame onto other people. These same people are blind to the evidence of corruption, political negligence, media manipulation and good old fashion facts. These are the individuals who are so deeply entrenched in their inability to own up to being wrong, that they're becoming perfect candidates for other (more dangerous) conspiracies aligned to Covid denial, far-right extremism, incel rhetoric, etc.
That's what worries me.
Alternatively, they'll acknowledge that their political heros lied to them during Brexit and then choose to support more fanatical organisations to show their anger. That can't be good for anyone.
It would be good to figure out a safe way for people to talk about their mistakes without forcing them to feel idiotic.

@@Andrew-oe2ge I think it has more to do with this: While the UK was in the EU, the UK was vetoing the Japanese trade deal because 0% tariffs on Japanese cars would give them little reason to stay in the UK. Since we've left, the EU signed the deal anyway as it's no skin off their nose and a 0% deal from Japan is better than 10% tariffs from the UK.
You need to start with your self.
The EU dropped tariffs on Japanese car imports and Honda wanted to bring their manufacturing back home (very Brxiteer of them). They pulled out of Turkey at the same time.
Stop listening to the BBC, Guardian etc. Read the business pages of a less biased outlet. Listen to the people you think are evil rather than what activist journalists want to tell you. You might be surprised.

I work in the automotive industry and this is all about electrification, automation and repositioning the business for future car ownership growth. Honda has had a weak lineup since the mid 2000’s. I missed Bylines video on Nissan and post Brexit investment.

This is a fact I have known most of my life Hans, a significant number of the working class of my country, (England), seem to be overawed by the 'great and the good' and actually relish their lives as sheep, believing that the said 1% and the tories have a god given right to dictate their lives for them and that what is dictated is for their own good. It's thanks to these people and a more insidious hard right element we now have to lie in a bed of shit, which will only get deeper as time goes on, the trouble with this is that I and people of similar outlook have to lie in the same bed. I'm approaching my 70th birthday and it sickens me to think that I probably won't live long enough to see better times, the damage done to this country and it's reputation world wide by the brexshiteers of all classes is too deep! The Japanese government even made a statement that their companies could not operate under different conditions than single market membership. And scores of economists predicted that companies would leave the UK. Nissan's boss made a public statement that Nissan did not support Brexit. The Remain campaign also sent a leaflet to every single household in the UK which mentioned this. If you missed these ample warning, that's on you. It is a matter of historical record.
You can easily find all of these examples and many, many more, within seconds, with an internet search. If that is beyond your skills, then you certainly deserve the ill effects you were unable to recognise when all evidence was placed before your face.
From Australia - we're just waiting for the pound to drop so visiting there will be cheaper. And BTW, we haven't forgotten how the UK dumped us when they joined the EU. We just got on with it and sold to China. Now they want us back in the fold - but we still have to stand in the "Foreign Passport" queue at Heathrow.

I remember Brexiteers on BBC Question Time literally shouting and screaming at anyone who tried to explain why Brexit would be detrimental to the UK economy and why we should stay in the EU. Even then, when we followed the route to Brexit, we could have stayed in the customs union which would have removed a lot of the trade barriers and bureaucracy, but the government and Brexiteers were gung ho for the hardest form of Brexit. Getting what you voted for is sometimes a hard lesson.

The one upshot of Brexit is, that it made the EU popular again in the rest of the member states. It's far from perfect, very much a work in progress but already a wonder of the world.

From a German point of view and a person who lived in the UK for some years, a person who loves british humor and the eccentric, I really feel sorry for everybody who got betrayed by the Brexit campaigners. I also do agree with S SW: Brexit is an excellent advertising campaign for the EU. Brexit also shows incompetence, selfishness and short-sightedness of politicians - they do not care about the people.
You sound kind, Manfred - but no one was betrayed. The facts were out there, but I think the people who voted for Brexit had convinced themselves that only **other people** would lose their jobs and livelihoods. I have no sympathy for anyone who voted for Brexit and has now lost their job. They were told and told and told what the likely consequence was, and refused to listen.

Because they were oversold on the idea that they were hamstrung by European rules. This is very similar to how conservatives in the United States make their arguments. While there is no European rules that “hamstring” the US, conservatives in the US say regulations hamstring development, particularly federal regulations. So their move is to disassemble the administrative state and yes, quality of life is going down as there are fewer and fewer ways to reign in big corporations and powerful individuals from their for-profit and community-destructive gains.
Well, the UK now also needs people to pull potatoes and turnips out of the ground. Brexit, a problem that solves itself!

@@chickedee1085 The European Investment bank made a decision to approve a loan request, it's what banks do, approve/reject loans. Ford made the decision on where it wanted to consolidate production in its need at the time to restructure after the financial crisis. It chose a larger, cheaper, more efficient and more modern plant over the one in Southampton. They brought the same "One Ford" program that worked in the US to Europe. That led to plants being closed down as Ford consolidated work in fewer factories and got rid of excess capacity. The UK plant closure in 2013 was going to happen regardless of anything the EU did. An £80m loan from the EIB wasn't going to save it.

I mean, I'm not even British, never been to Britain, but to me it seemed Brits were going in the direction we were moving away from, what my country was like after the fall of communism, corruption being everywhere and in everything. And I was like: "Guys! Don't go there! We've been there and it's not fun!" And some were civil, others not so much in their reactions. But ok, I mean, if they want to experience what life was like in the Balkans in the 1990s... ok... Let them learn what a "local baron" is. I feel sorry for those over 16m people who voted remain.

This is why, after the vote, Brexiteers shifted their emphasis and insisted that it had all been about democracy and sovereignty and not economics - I even recall Farage shouting down a listener on LBC with “you can’t put a price on democracy!” Which sounds jolly noble until you actually lose your job but don’t notice any significant improvement in democracy. But just think of the sovereignty, the crown in Parliament is again victorious and demonstrating the exceptionalism of England - hoorah! Now what?

If this was to do with Brexit, you'd expect their factory to be moving to France or Germany. But it's not. The factory is moving to Asia. In fact Honda have openly stated this isn't to do with Brexit.

The problem is that she was looking for upsides to Brexit in the wrong place: pop over to the Netherlands and you'll find all sorts of benefits to Brexit with foreign investment, new businesses and all sorts of financial improvements that are directly linked to Brexit. If you're looking for upsides in the UK then it's no wonder that you didn't find them.

There was a headline in one of the gutter press that said BRITISH BUSINESSMAN FINDS LOOPHOLE TO EU STUPIDITY. Turned out that this British businessman's loophole was moving his business, lock stock and barrel to Holland. He had made all his British employees redundant, and employed Dutch people instead. It cost him a lot of money to do, but he now has access to the Customs Union and Single Market. And they called it a "loophole."
why would someone whose employer exported 90% of its cars to the EU market vote for Brexit. Were they stupid or just willing to listen to any lies?
This is very sad for all those affected but if only they had taken a little bit of time to research the probable impact of Brexit on the Honda plant rather than believe the lies fed to them by Johnson, Farage and their cronies then maybe they would have voted to remain in the EU.

Do you remember the Conservatives Devastating Northern towns when they closed the Shipyards, shut the Steel Industries Closed the Mines and the Chemical Plants - I didn't hear anyone from the South bleating about that because it didn't affect them directly but now because one car factory has been closed there is uproar. Well, welcome to the world of the Tory - Sorry I just don't care anymore. The number of people on here bleating about how all the remainers were believing the propaganda of the government, were doing exactly that back in the '70s & '80s when people in those Northern towns who lost nearly everything were telling them what the Tories were all about and they still voted for them and still do, so no sympathy from me.
