Doubt it. The engine doesn't change gears, because there's no need. No gearbox either. The engine is probably running at constant rpms, slightly varying at times so that it generates more power.
So no, that's not how the engine sounds when generating current, sorry. The fake sound is just fake and ridiculous.
EDIT: Maybe the sound at the end, where he does 0-60 can be real or at least could make sense. It just sounds like a CVT, going up in rpms and staying there. Not particularly enjoyable to listen to.

@@mircea5013 indeed the sounds it made when driving around were all fake and did not match what the engine was actually doing. The accurate sound was when he did the 0-60 runs. It sounds like a CVT because when you floor it the ECM just tells the engine to sit at peak power RPM. It's actually more responsive than a CVT because you don't have to wait for the "cones" in the gearbox to move around. Probably why the 0-60 times are very impressive for a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine in a sizable car.

  • @mircea5013
    @mircea5013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

The system isn't as weird as you might think. It's used on locomotives since long ago, they're called diesel electric. When running on a non-electrified railway, the diesel engine acts as a generator to produce electric current that powers the electric engine. The locomotive can also draw power directly from the power grid and act as a pure electric one, having its diesel turned off when not needed.
Going back to cars - for generating electricity, the combustion engine is usually set up to run in Atkinson cycle, instead of Otto. Don't know about this model in particular, but I guess it's the same. You basically have an electric car, but you're generating your current from fossil fuels. If it seems stupid, not really as there are quite a few benefits: should be quite silent, and it will always run at optimal rpm, so that it's always as efficient as possible. If it would run as a classic engine, the efficiency would vary greatly, depending on how the car is driven and how gears are changed. Also, the engine's wear should be lower.
Now, it's true that it still matters how you drive it, as a heavy foot would require more current and the engine would need to feed on more gas. But, nevertheless, it's still more efficient this way.
I guess that at higher speeds the engine starts powering the wheels directly, because electric engines stop being efficient at that point.
The bad part is the system gets quite complex.
Also the fake engine sound is horrible decision. Hope you can turn that shit off. Have real engine sound or don't try to fake it.

I keep going back to it - Honda is one of a few manufacturers that still makes a proper Right Hand Drive Vehicle. Obviously it's because it's Japanese but look at the latest Toyota Corolla - they stick in the Left Hand Drive Stereo in the UK built cars, possibly as a cost saving, as all Japanese built models have the Stereo controls on the right hand side. For the sake of a few extra pounds I'd gladly pay it for a proper RHD model for my car where the handbrake/ebrake, stereo controls and bonnet release are where they're meant to be - by the driver, not the passenger.
It's definitely my OCD but I wish car reviewers would highlight this more often. The only time Ive ever seen it is when the biggest offenders such as Renault and Peugeot don't move their fuse boxes so the cubby is small. Please CarWow Save me !

Your car is still using the older engines of the 10th gen civic, both are available here on the mk10 hatchback 1.0 Turbo & 1.5 VTEC Turbo with 182 bhp.
I think the european model is definitely a lot more advanced compared to american versions, and ofcourse more fuel efficient (big difference) to normal combustion you got in canada. Sad that you weren't able to get this advanced and performancy updated industry competitive e:HEV system, and better specs in UK for the same price too (further researched, developed and tested for europe therefore this Civic released a year or two later then america) but the manual is always a joy to use. 😉
Still have the mk10 civic turbocharged vtec in manual, and it's a perfect manual. Fun to use, very sporty and gripping (more sportier than the mk11 from all respects) and great to drive too.

First Civic without a manual gearbox. Very interesting. It’s still available with a 6-speed in North America, though there is no hybrid option here.

Brilliant car. Rides really well-better than my current Audi A4 Avant Black edition. Interior quality is on par with German built cars- better than their entry level models. Handles so well like a Go-Kart. The high efficient MPG is amazing. It so good that I brought one after 40 min test drive.

It's a reverse hybrid, Opel did that with the Ampera years ago. It works, you can have a small capacity petrol engine with better mileage, makes better sense. To me at least. And you get the solution in a Honda, which means that you will basically trade in the car for a wheelchair when you get really old, and the new owner will still enjoy it.

I have one and I think the engine Rev / gear change sound is somewhat real as the engine revs high when power demand is high and that is driving the electric motor that charges the battery. I believe the piped sound is in sport mode but it does similar or same in economy. So for me it’s “real” 👍
