Toyota should come in dead last, it doesn’t even compete in the same class anymore based on price.

Can’t go wrong with either one of the 3 but for long term ownership with after sales support I’ve found Toyota is unparalleled and unbeatable compared to all brands regardless of price range or class. Moreover, with the average price of gas above$5/ gallon, I’ve found the Toyota Sienna 36 MPG is attractive. My current 2005 Sienna is running great at 323K miles and spare parts are easy to find and cheap to buy. Sienna is my first choice and runner up is the Honda Odyssey.

I wanted the Sienna until I finally got to drive one. It drove fine, but the interior felt cheep and uncomfortable. I couldn't see paying $50k for a xle that felt so bad inside. I loved driving the Odyssey exl. The mpg and awd of the sienna is nice, but that is all. Odyssey has reliability issues the first few years after a model change, but are usually solid after that. I don't trust Kia yet.

We have a rear wheel drive Expedition in northern Utah. Snow tires during the winter and ZERO issues. Front wheel drive is fantastic in the winter, and I would argue, BETTER for the majority of drivers. My opinion, and plenty will disagree, is that if you can't handle a front wheel drive in the snow, you shouldn't be on the roads. All AWD will do is put you into situations that you can't handle. Now, is it NICE, yes, but necessary, no. @@hai2560

I just sold my 2022 sienna for a 2023 odyssey. The MPG is amazing on the Sienna and available AWD is a plus if you need or want it. Styling is subjective but I think the Sienna is more stylish .
I feel the Odyssey beats it in every other category. The Sienna wins if you put MPG above all else or need AWD. The siennas synthetic leather seats are awful for any trip longer than 30 minutes. The back seat is a penalty box on the Sienna and the leg room in the third row is less than the odyssey. I don’t care what the measurements say. I guess it just depends how for up your push the middle row. The big plus is resale. I certainly didn’t get hurt on selling it. Just underwhelmed the longer I drove it.
Odyssey has higher quality cabin materials and just a better vehicle to spend your time in.
Overall both good minivans. I can see why people would put the sienna #1. However, for me it’s the Odyssey.

I owned the 2021 Sienna XLE and now have the 2023 Oddessy Touring. Toyota’s fuel economy is superior and the one thing I miss the most with the current market we’re in. It’s also waaayyy more spacious then the Honda. Problem is, dealers are selling at least $5k above MSRP and there’s a 30-45 day wait period. You need to put a deposit down to even see one in a dealer. You can get a high end Honda for the more basic model of the Toyota and Honda does drive better, in all capacity. I like both vans a lot. But I think the Sienna wins the prize for me too. I’ll probably be trading back at some point down the line.

I had considered the Sienna when looking at new vehicles this year - main problem being (not surprisingly) availability. Dealers in the London (Ontario) area were saying 6 to 9 months wait for hybrids (and that was in the spring). Another Toyota-perk of the Sienna is that Toyota's been doing hybrids now for well over 20 years, and they've proved that their hybrids can operate reliably well past the 10 year mark. It's a piece-of-mind you can't really get with other manufacturers. When it comes to aesthetics, however, I have to give Kia major points; the Carnival looks incredible. I never thought I could say that about a minivan. I hope for Kia's sake that the years to come will prove it to be a reliable build, which should help with resale - but only time will tell there. Being able to press one button as a mom and have my seats move was a life saver when holding a baby. I definitely think you need to do more research before writing something off.

Your reviews are good from a 5' 8" perspective. If you have any tall friends, we'll say 6' 5" or over, bring them along on your next test drive and get their point of view. Biggest bone of contention will be the insanity of the manufacturers to install sunroofs on everything just to get an upgrade on the entertainment system thereby lowering the interior headroom by at least 2 inches. This goes for SUV's as well. An option I would like to see is the removal of the ever expanding console. The more storage between the front seats means narrowing the seat which is very uncomfortable for long trips.

I am so torn between the Toyota and Honda. I ruled out Chrysler because it is just too unreliable. I can't take the chance of breaking down while traveling. Although, if it was reliable I 100% would put this at the top of the list above all the others. It drives pretty quickly, no drag, it is very quiet, and very comfortable. . It is a nice ride, has great features, and it is plug in Hybrid which I think is the best type of hybrid to have. It allows you to go all electric no gas. The Carnival is pretty cool and by far has the best dashboard and features. The TV's are awesome. However, the seats are not comfortable at all, and in the end that is really really important, especially for bumpy rides. They feel like cheap airplane seats, hard with no give. Not comfortable at all for long distance driving. Toyota is better looking than the Honda, but it really is so slow, and when you need to pass a car are accelerate to get on the highway that is a big drawback, but the fuel economy and the look is superior to the Honda. The Honda, although not the prettiest minivan, has everything you need, fast, handles well. Good features comfortable, but does not come in AWD. These things make it very hard to decide between to the two. I wish they offered heated steering on the lower end models. You have to get the top model just to get that feature.

considering that Kia's engines are only 100k motors, I wouldn't have put it on the list, Hondas nice however the engine is a time belt vs chain which req changing at 100k which runs you about 1200 for replacement so if you are looking to keep it for many 100k miles like i plan on its about 3600. as far as the sienna the only down side is the hybrid motor and batt, now from what i have looked into its the same motor and battery that you find in the Prius, camery, etc. however depending on what your driving habits are you can get 150k to 300k out of it. the good side to that is the avg replacement cost is around 2500 which is far less than the maintenance of the Honda. so for me and my family we are staying away from the kia line up, just to many engine issues and will be looking more towards Toyota.

People that convert minivans into campers have discovered how to remove the second row seats. The problem is the airbag sensor needs to be bypassed and you can buy a small gizmo to plug into the wire to trick the Sienna into thinking the seats are still there. Just my 2 cents, and they're just my opinion, I think KIA got way to bad of a rap for just a few minor things. One, awd is NOT necessary for a minivan, front wheel drive with good snow tires will literally plow snow with the front bumper, and is actually very good for snow, (front wheels pull, keeping you from getting loose and losing control). I'd also argue that the average minivan driver probably shouldn't be driving if FWD is not capable of moving the car. All AWD is going to do for most people in the snow is get them in trouble. I drive truck over the road. In the winter, it's the AWD cars that are smashing into the backs of people. AWD only helps go, not stop. Also, the resale doesn't matter. So you get 8k less on the back end, you spent 8k less on the front. It's a wash. I think the fact KIA blows the others out of the water in features, comfort, technology, and innovation, not to mention it just looks 10 times better, puts it in front. I'd say the biggest negative is fuel mileage, but that wouldn't knock it out of first in my book. "Reputation" doesn't keep a vehicle out of the shop, sure it helps the resale, but as stated, it's cheaper on the front end.

If you have a vehicle that large with 6 adults and gear or towing a trailer, you want that V6 pulling with no problems! Dodge killed the mini van, mass produced with cheap parts, it never left them and has carried on through the years. Maybe the Pacifica anc pull through and come back out on top...hard when the dealerships or used car lots give people nothing on a trade in but soak them on resale price of a used vehicle. If Honda would have brought the hybrid system to north America (as it has been a thing in Japan for a while now) the Odyssey would have probably won IMO. Odyssey is still more comfortable, lower center of gravity which makes the driving experience nicer and looks cooler. And for any nerds out there, Yes I know the Japanese Odyssey is slightly smaller and less powerful so it won't have the towing capacity of a V6 but Japan doesn't have a Sienna equivalent anymore either since the Noah, Voxy and Sienta are the slightly smaller and Japanese Odyssey equivalent. Anyway, too bad they Discontinued the Japanese Odyssey. Rumors are that when the facilities are built, there will be an Odyssey successor which will be larger than the Japanese Odyssey so I have my fingers crossed that whatever the name is, it will come the states as the next gen Odyssey. I will assume it will be an HEV or PHEV with AWD option similar to the US Sienna. If the Honda ZR-V is a hint to what Honda will be doing in the future, I'm excited. On a side note, I really like the Kia Carnival and almost bought one but Kia and Hyundai (at least where I live) have the worst post purchase service and they can't seem to stay in business. Either I see the dealership with new ownership or one dealership dies and a few months later, a new one pops up at a different location. Even my friend who currently works at VW used to work for KIA and told me that If i buy one, i better hope I have no issues or else it will be a nightmare getting the car serviced. If it doesn't have issues, the cars are great!

Great review. I do have to disagree about the Pacifica only because we’ve owned 2 now (2018 & 2020). The stow-n-go 2nd & 3rd rows are hands down the best feature for our family. We’re a road-tripping family so the cargo space, overall ride comfort, and rear individual screens have been great during 1-2 week vacations. I will say that our 2018 did experience some transmission “jumping" early on but the dealership got that fixed. The real issue with Chrysler is availability! I was rear ended in our 2018 and due to major parts delays/shortages, it was claimed totaled, which then put us into a major bind getting a new one. Most dealerships had- and still have- a 4 to 6 month wait on orders and NO options in stock. Not to mention Chrysler has reduced interior color options down to Black or Caramel if you opt for the highest Pinnacle trim. We were lucky to find the used 2020 in another state. But if you have the buying flexibility of time and limited interior colors, I do think they are worth the wait.

I own a 2018 Honda odyssey and I'm having all kinds of trouble with it. collision mitigation systems brakes the car to a complete grinding stop out of nowhere, especially 3 way intersections and with the acceleration delay issue which together have been a subject of lawsuits, it's down right a safety hazard to drive. To name a few minor issues is battery drain, buggiest side door in the industry and the electrical wiring issues. I sometimes don't get any audio with an error message saying no audio connected. When I do have audio, it's too staticky to listen to anything. I'm currently working with a lemon lawyer to get have Honda issue a full refund.

Have your Odyssey check. I have 20 EXL, before my infotainment was so bad that I am ready to trade it in but after I took it for service for the said MOst net Off and the popping sounds. Now it is working good. The guy said a loose connection that needed to be crimped. Took them 6 hrs to finish it.

We were about to buy a Carnival until I realized there is no TV screen for the third row. We have little kids and could see this being a huge issue on road trips. I love the Sienna but the 4cyl has be concerned with lack of power. I like the 6cyl in the Odyssey but I think the van in general needs an update.

Removing the 2nd row seats is a deal-breaker for us; we do it all the time. That rules out the Sienna. Had a 2004 Sienna - loved it; currently have a 2015 Odyssey and love it even more. And it looks like it will be another Ody for us when the time comes.
