I wonder how hard the person drove the Sienna, I have an 04 Sienna , once I get to 40 mph and open up the passing gear , I can out accelerate most vehicles my size.
I really like how he said the toyota looks like a camry and glossed over the fact of the Hondas front looks just like civic.

I'm a dad too. I think it's worth mentioning WHY the second row seats are not removable in the Toyota. It's because they have built-in airbags. In fact the Sienna has 10 airbags in total. So, for the safety conscious, this is a big plus. My personal feeling is that if I'm going to buy a new car, and take the absurd financial depreciation hit, it's in large part because I would have access to the latest safety features including lots of airbags. But absolutely, if you need to transport gear or cargo that is 80 inches long, the Sienna isn't for you.

That is a fail if you ask me. I have an 18 Sienna (3 kids) and have hauled couches before. I have camped with an air mattress even. The versatility of a van is phenomenal because it hauls with unmatched comfort and cargo, but also can be a utility vehicle when you need it. Toyota basically chopped the new one in half by not designing removable second row seats.
The hybrid batteries is under the floor of the second row seats
I’m not sure why so many insist on having removable seats. If you need massive amounts of cargo space just buy a trailer. One of the best purchases I’ve made!
@@luperon There are videos on youtube instructing you how to do this. Two different socket wrenches, pulling off plastic parts, and most fun of all, disconnecting airbags. This is on the verge of factory service and if the dealer discovers you've been playing with the airbags, I'll bet they will discontinue some or all of the warranty. And to put them back, do it all in reverse. I take my seats out all the time whether to put a sheet of plywood in, put in a couple of mountain bikes on the way to the trails with a buddy, or haul stuff for the PTO for the three different schools my kids are in. Non removable seats is an absolute deal breaker for me.
I am a die hard toyota fan. But, I had an odyssey as a rental for just a day and let me tell you I LOVED it.
I was riding in one of them and omg...even as a passenger you truly notice the space and literally how fast and of a ride it is.
when you own it and drive it every day, you're gonna wish you have the gas savings on the Sienna vs a traditional V6. Literally burning tens of thousands of dollars in its lifetime for doing the same work.
I currently own my 18th Toyota and just traded my wife’s 4Runner for a new odyssey. The siennas are solid but the odyssey just has an edge over it.

If my hands are so full that I can't pull the door latch or use the remote button, balancing on one foot for even a short amount of time would be unappealing.
I have the feature on my Odyssey and have used it occasionally just because it's there but it is definitely not a must-have feature.

Vans are lame same thing with Crossovers we see on the road today. Real SUV's are huge the height of a full sized Pick up truck, non-car idiots are the one's driving crossovers. I love cars, Coupes and Sedans.
The coolest thing about the Sienna that never gets mentioned is the fact you can sleep in it with climate control. The hybrid battery will power the A/C or the heater while you sleep! It’s the ultimate van life vehicle.
They thought that people cared more about racing their minivan on the street than for its practical use
the system will shut off after 1 hour or after a max of 4 hours, and the engine will run as needed to charge the battery, but it will not have to run constantly at least.
@@ikelee Well Sometimes Minivan owners just wanna have a little fun, driving a 4 cylinder is just Boring and Sienna won’t haul more than 100 cubic feet, Odyssey hauls 145 cubic feet.
@@aimxdy8680 you know if you buy a Sienna over a 10 year ownership of the vehicle, you can save enough from spending on gas to buy a second hand sports car or a civic for like $6k to 8k or so than to settle for a "fun" minivan. You cannot tell me you'll have more fun driving a minivan than a barebone civic.
@@PWCDN I have my own project car, it’s just that I needed something with space that could be also fun, I hate SUVs because they drive like shit and drive worse than minivans.
Most people can't tell the difference between 0-60 in 8.4 seconds vs. 7.8, but I bet they can tell the difference between 22mpg vs. 44mpg (Edmunds number) at the pump and their wallet. Point is, too much is made about Toyota's lack of HP compared to the Odessey and Pacifica as a father of 4 children, I don't cared much about 0-60 in a minivan, I save that for my M5, but I am in the market for one to haul my family around without having to visit the petrol station a lot. A win for Toyota.
You're right, 0 to 60 is not important to most minivan owners.
Compare the 50 to 70mph of the minivans. When I need/want to pass a slow driver on the highway before on-coming traffic closes my opportunity.

OMG more of this CVT review ignorance. This is not a "decision" to go with a CVT. ALL Toyota hybrids use the planetary gear power split device. It's nothing like a rubber band CVT. It just happens to be continuously variable. It doesn't drive like other gasoline powered cars with CVT. Please stop saying this stuff.

Thank you for pointing that out. The planetary device in Toyota hybrids is super efficient, has no slipping components or belts, and is damn near bulletproof. I've got three of them.
You're right. I test drove a 21 Sienna today expecting an experience with the CVT like I had one time driving a Nissan Versa several years ago with a CVT. No comparison. I was extremely impressed, enough now that I'm actually considering it over the 21 Pacifica. (Honda and Kia not options due to lack of AWD option).

yeah I find that to be an unnecessary feature, more moving parts for less plus side. As long as there is a convenient toggle switch to lower the seats, I don't need it "motorized". If you have to lower and raise them frequently, waiting for the motor to do it is annoying. There is no plus side, every one wants it automated when they don't use a feature.
Yeah it adds weight and complexity to something that isn't difficult at all. I could do without power hatches and doors as well, though I have to admit mine have never given me any trouble.
We’ve had three Odysseys. Just switched to a new Sienna XSE. Plenty of power for family. Quality and reliability. The CVT works well and you can opt for “manual shifts” and “sport mode” which is laughable but the end result is that the power is fine for all of our needs.
The Sienna tends to be zippier because of the instant acceleration from the batteries. Especially with the xse model and its sport suspension.
I'm usually a Honda guy, but I honestly prefer the Sienna. Toyota recently has been making impressive cars.

Is it just me or no matter how hard Toyota tries to make better cars while still being reliable people will always say the competitors are better. TOYOTA has stepped their game and still dont get props for it.
In 10 years , the Toyota will probably be in a lot better shape than its competitors. Toyota buyers care more about longevity than styling

Toyota saves money by not restyling things , they put the money into better transmissions and electrical systems. The Odessey feels more lightweight and car like than the Sienna.The Sienna also has a better resale value

The Sienna is just different. It’s a different way of “minivaning”. I think it works though. 44 mpg is incredible for a vehicle like this. Plus it has AWD which is a must have for me therefore the Odyssey fails immediately.

@@Lumpia_In_Texas it’s a minivan. The transmission doesn’t matter as long as it’s reliable. And Toyota’s arguable the most reliable massive car brand. So the CVT won’t bother a parent hauling kids.
@@Lumpia_In_Texas CVT is a label they gave it that doesn't reflect its technical operation. It is a power split device using a planetary gearset which is incredibly reliable. Working on Toyota's for a combined five years I've yet seen one fail personally.

Push button seat lowering is overrated. I rented a Pacifica on a long trip, don't see the point of standing there holding in a button for 30 seconds waiting for the 3rd roll to lowered, using a manual lever takes less then 3 seconds, don't even want to talked about rising the seat with the button, took longer.
The 2021 Honda Odyssey didn't change much like the Toyota Sienna did, but I'm still loyal fan to Honda.
I'm a loyal Honda fan, but 22mpg vs 40mpg, I mean, I'm a bigger fan of keeping cash in my pocket.

Idk y ppl are complaining about the speed of the sienna. All I know is that I just bought my sienna a few days ago and as I drove back home, I was flying pass cars with ease. Had to remember to slow down multiple times. More cup holders for the front, the better. I'll have a bottle water, soda, coffee. And that's just for me. There's 4 cup holders on top of the center console, and 2 on the back bottom for the middle row passengers so they're not left out. 1 on each sliding door also. I'm like, hells yes! And there's that bonus shelf on the dash for my phone and other small stuff (snacks mainly). Hells yes again! Now, the open space under the console, another hells yes! Ppl were like, why? What for? Uhmmmmm, purses! Big purses! Bags, hats, umbrellas, laptops, books, magazines, picnic mat, diaper bag. You can store anything! Where else would you store these things? By your feet? Under your seat? In the trunk? On the floor of the second row? So convenient and practical. The middle seats can slide all the way back, so much leg room! But I call it, walking space. Yes I can climb up and get in front of my children to buckle and remove them. Granted I am on the petite side. My kids are 6, 3, and 1. These were the main reasons why I chose the sienna over the other minivans. The folding of the 3rd row seats in all the minivans are similar and not too important. The folded down 3rd row cargo space is not much of a huge difference either. Best part is the mpg! I drove 2 hrs home from the toyota lot, and have driven around town maybe 4 times. It's still on full. It hasn't moved a millimeter. It would be on half tank by now in my old odyssey (tranny went out).
Con: the 3rd row seats when folded down without any cargo weight on top, makes noise as it springs/hops/thump on every bump. So it's not good to leave them folded down if you're not needing to use maximum cargo space. I just wanted to leave them down in case I wanted to load anything quick, and save 5 seconds of folding the seats down :D plus I won't be using the 3rd row on the daily as the middle row fits my 3 kids. But i guess I'll have to leave them up now even when they're not in use. .
Still, Sienna ftw! :D
I have four kids age 9 and younger. Odyssey is a clear winner for two reasons:
1. Way more fun to drive. Yes, minivan drivers care about handling, acceleration and engine note. I’ve driven them both it’s not close. Honda wins
2. More flexibility with cargo room. Moving seats around or removing them to accommodate different loads of people and stuff is crucial. Honda wins here too

@@andybub45 with 4 kids only a minivan will work. I drive an odyssey and it does have a decent engine note and it is reasonably fun to drive especially with good tires. Compared to the Prius-like Sienna.
@@cbadics with 4 kids only a minivan? no. any 3 row SUV will work too. you will run out of weight room in the honda and sienna quickly, with the honda having just 1600 pounds payload before it hits GVWR, and the toyota having around 1100. that includes your stuff and you.
Most 3rd SUVs have terrible legroom.. you're basically sitting on the ground..

I am not going to buy a minivan to make a fashion statement. I will buy it for functionality and utility. My 2006 Sienna is over 200,000 miles now. So far, there isn't a hiccup. I will buy another Sienna. Especially, It will save me at least $150 per month on gas.
$150 in gas is probably way less than the interest per month in the the price difference. Just saying
the lack of a TV in the backseat is definitely a plus. And, if you are buying a minivan, looks and styling is not the priority. Reliability, safety and convenience is more important.

Can't say about the Honda Quality at the present time. However, we owned 2 1990 accord, 1989 prelude, 2000 accord v6, and 2007 Acura MDX: All transmissions failed less than 100K miles. Lexus has been my family choice since 1997 SC400 now we have every single Lexus model line in my household ( SC, ES, 2 RX, LX, GX & LS) with Zero problem. I just put in a deposit to order 2022 Platinum Sienna.

Something to keep in mind if you live in mountainous regions with big elevation gains is that Toyota battery may run out before you make it all the way up and then you will only have your gas engine.
I was very interested in Sienna because of fuel economy, but lately I am leaning towards a slightly used Odyssey.
Check out Everyday Review’s 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Torture Test video. He literally took his family on vacation and travelled up mountains on the highway. He said he never once felt the engine was strained. Got really good MPG too!
After I saw that video I was convinced that the new Sienna was worth checking out.

From experience with my 2007 Prius (new hybrid battery) I can say that on some roads with long climbs you may deplete the battery.
It’s still a mystery to me how the car decides which motor to use when.
Video didn't mention Sienna offers 1500 watt/110v outlet. This opens up options when camping (charging ebike, cooking, hours of movie watching on projector, ....). Basically use the car as a generator for electricity outdoor except the car automatically turns on the engine when battery needs charge.
Can even run your home refrigerator and other things when the lights go out. A full tank of gas would last a long time.
This feature is supposedly not available in this year's model. That was per the initial reviews, unless that changed.
@@ks1ngh27 yes, its available. the stuff is in short supply. The AC outlet actually runs from a different inverter, that takes the high voltage DC from the hybrid battery, so its really efficient. my 2020 highlander hybrid has the 1500w AC plug, its nice when I go to the RC track, I can charge my shit right there in the back and never worry about getting close to an outlet. my sienna sadly does not have the plug because it was bought on short notice when my work van broke, and you cannot option it post factory. the 1500w ac inverter sells from toyota for $3800 on its own without any of the kit.
When comparing vehicles they should be similar trim packages. Siennas do have TV’s in the back. For looks the Sienna looks much better especially in the XSE trim. The FWD drive Sienna has bench seats that you can remove the middle part to make it like captain seats. The vacuum and fridge no longer is in the Siennas due to supply issues.
This is the best review by kids by far. I went from 2011 Odyssey to 2017 Pathfinder for AWD and all my kids can say is there's no TV or screen. So i gave them both Ipads and now they never ask me for anything else. If you need AWD Sienna is the only Choice or the Pacifica. Honda please offer SHAWD for Odyssey. I'm definitely getting another Odyssey if you do that.
SH-AWD is exclusive to the Acura brand.

Today I test drove sienna and I say it wins the battle. Sick of paying a v6 engine gas, so bye bye Honda.

I am planning to take long family roads trips.. This covid has frustrated everyone and feels like prison and I will feel safer driving to places vs flying for now. I will take will Sienna (it looks way better).. Gas milage and realibility is important and Toyotas reputation in building hybrid engines for decades is exceptional!!
Apparently its an unpopular opinion, but I think the Sienna looks dang near perfect. I love the huge grill and all the other styling they did on it. The Honda looks like every other odessey for the past 10 years. And the MPG is like… not even close. Sienna all the way.

Sienna looks better than the Odyssey, quite honestly Honda needs a re-design, the Honda has nothing going for it other than brand loyalty. Odyssey still looks like a minivan. I guess if you want to go up hill and don't want a Chrysler product, Honda's 50 extra horsepower will come in handy.

I love the tech in our Sienna. And I love getting 40 mpg. And I’ve never had a grabby brake issue. And the XSE handles really well. And the 10speed in the Honda has sketchy reliability (9sp too).
I’m such a dad...was so excited to see this review. Please redo the comparison when the new Sedona and refreshed Pacifica are out.

I just bought a 2013 Sienna Limited that has this feature. (Love it, by the way.)
This review is decent, however there is no mention of AWD. I totally understand peoples preferences and it usually boils down to cargo space(removeable seats), mpg, available AWD, and conveniences. This review was biased based on a single person's preference. I totally admit I'm a toyota guy with honda a close second. There wasn't any mention of cost savings for the hybrid like mileage, and regenerative brakes that dont need to be replaced until 120k miles, no alternator...ect. Maintenance cost are far lower than conventional gas models, although the throttle loses some response, but let's face it...if your getting a minivan you're not drag racing.

I'm a Canadian and camping is our way of life here so engine reliability, hybrid gas savings, and AWD are still a winner for me. The Sienna is definitely the winner.

You have a breakdown of which models of the 350 Honda's vs the 171 Toyotas? If not, its a pointless statement. Even same generation models can have different engines due to improvements and recalls. That's a very black and white statement. Considering this video, we only care about the sample size for Sienna vs Odyssey or Toyota V6 vs Honda V6 if you're going by previous model years.

Supercharged Riviera does the 0-60 thing for me. BUT some people prefer the "floaty" drive. It's, like you said, personal preference.
None removable second row seat is a design for increasing safety. Why would I want to remove them anyway? It's a van, to haul family, not material cargo. For that, a Tacoma, Tundra, F-150 would be more ideal imo. Fuel economy is definitely more of a game changer for most. That's amazing! And AWD!

What he failed to mention was Honda Odyssey is still using Timing belt instead of Chain which adds $750 cost to replace.

Also honda use direct fuel injection system which guarantee carbon build up maintenance problem in few years.
@@foodparadise5792 Yup, and if you happen to buy a Toyota with direct injection, they add fuel injectors in the intake with the only purpose is to clean the intake valves, thus it's not an issue on a Toyota.
I would rather buy a Sienna. Saving money and time at gas stations are a game changer. Looks are objective, and personally don't like either. Now doing the hokey pokey is ridiculous, wish they take what Kia has where you stand there within 3 seconds and it opens up. Now the only thing that Honda has a major points is removing the middle seats.
I'll say this, is Kia makes a hybrid for their Sedona, watch out Toyota...
I don't think Toyota has anything to worry about from Hyundai/ Kia. They start falling apart when the warranty expires.
you can buy yourself a cheap second hand beater for the gas you save on the Sienna if you want to have fun. I can tell you, I can have a lot of fun with $5000 over the course of 10 years savings than to go a little faster than a Sienna lol. You can literally buy a second hand beater for that money to abuse for fun. Until the competition comes out with a 40mpg minivan, nothing beats the Sienna in my books unless removal second row and going up a steep hill on the daily fully loaded is a must-have.

If the ride is anything like Honda Accord and Toyota Camry (it should be similar dynamics), it will be a matter of personal preference. I have both. I love the accord for its handling and sportiness, I love the camry for its soft compliance where I don't have to feel every bump on the road. I feel the Sienna and Odyssey will have similar dynamics.
That being said, I drove 16 hours in a Odyssey (2016) with eight people, including all their luggage and one stroller,I was very impressed with the handling. Drove on the straight road hitting close to 90 (this was for short stretch in middle of nowhere on flat road), the ride felt so smooth, I felt like i was going 60mph. Once we hit the mountains, the odyssey took the curves like it was nothing, did not roll on the windy roads or felt like it was too much weight in the car. That is very impressive.
That being said, Toyota hybrid powertrain is very reliable, with few moving part, the services are very cheap and less things to break as there are less moving parts. I drove the new sienna for 5 minutes, it felt good too but I don't know how it will do on the highway or mountains for longer trip yet.

... except that the far superior gas mileage on the Toyota eliminates that advantage within a couple years, and from that point onward it's all gravy. Sorry, but it's really "advantage Toyota" when it comes to price, unless you're just going to keep it in your garage and use it as a conversation piece. I worry that we're dumbing down consumers by feeding them simplistic comparisons like these. I was hoping for a more sophisticated review.
I live in colorado. The clear winner every time is gonna be the one with AWD. This is what sets the Sienna apart form every other competitor. It’s no contest. The other nuances I can live with but this is gonna be my wife’s car and she is hauling precision’s cargo (our kids) in the winter and rain . It’s literally a no brainer if you actually care about the things that matter.
The AWD + mileage (which will pay for the van in gas savings over the long run)
plus a fellow youtuber has showed the removal process of the middle seats is possible. So another plus there.

The Sienna got 20 MORE mpg than the Odyssey in your testing. In an 8 passenger van. I'll take the crummy CVT. Mind blown.
It's a hybrid though
The "Crummy" CVT isn't one of those belt units. It's a Toyota design with a planetary gearset. Furthermore, yes, it makes engine noise and 4cyl noise at that, but the only reason it's noticeable is because when the van isn't using the 4cyl to accelerate, the drivetrain is whisper quiet.

No comparison, one is still using the antique 20 plus years old timing belt engine and the other one we don't have to talk about it. Hands down you know which one to pick.

AWD is good, and interestingly with the Hybrid drivetrain now it's hardly that much of an additional expense, but to be fair a decent set of snow tires trumps AWD any day. I've got an Outback on all seasons, and a Honda Fit that I throw snow tires on each winter and short of massive deep snow or ice (where no one wins) the Fit does very well. Now snow tires WITH an AWD car would be the dream. That being said I am in the market, and looking at the Sienna over the Odyssey for several reason, just trying to play reasonable on the AWD stuff. When it comes down to it, AWD helps you go, but it doesn't help you stop. Snow tires do both.

@@oneopinion6806 Look up AWD Sienna off-road and it'll convince you which car is superior. I've been stuck in the snow in a lighter car with FWD, having AWD will come in handy when you're stuck in a 5000lbs vehicle. AWD definitely optional if you don't drive in snow, almost pointless in my opinion.

The fact that the sienna is a hybrid, which such a huge MPG compared to other minivans, makes me sold no matter what the other features. The future is eco-friendly automobiles.
Honda Odyssey stops about 10 feet shorter than Toyota Sienna from 60 to 0 MPH. 10 feet! This is a difference that can mean life or death.
It makes sense, the Sienna has a giant Hybrid battery. But both of these vehicles will be loaded down with luggage and soccer equipment. So it doesn’t really matter.
@@andybub45 both weight about the same curb weight. the sienna comes in at around 4900 pounds empty on LE and XLE and XSE trims, but the limited and Platinum trims come in at a whopping 5100 pounds. worse yet, the vans GVWR is just 6175(minus dealer/port installed options), which means that you and your cargo can only weigh in at less than 1000 pounds. 4 adults will quickly max out the weight of the sienna before any crap is thrown in with them. the odyssey gets a bit more payload, at around 1600 pounds because of its lower curb weight of around 4400 pounds. still not much room to play with. at least the sienna can still tow 3500 pounds, which it has no issue with.

I mean they would've revamped it in 2022 but the sad thing is that they're going to discontinue it in 2022... Probably because of their transmission problems. My coworker a Master plant maintenance technician who goes by the book keeping maintenance on his Honda Odysseys but my 2005 Toyota Sienna is out living his two Honda Odysseys. His 2006 Odyssey developed engine issue at only 186K miles in 2016. He then bought another Odyssey against my recommendation for a 2017 Toyota Sienna. His 2017 Honda Odyssey developed engine issue at only 120K miles in 2023 while my Toyota Sienna experience zero issue with Engine, transmission, fuel pump, electric windows, super cold AC, upholstery. They are original and in great condition after 18 years and 325K miles later.
We recently got the 4th Generation Toyota Sienna and love it. We want a newer vehicle for long road trips and a good gas mileage. The hybrid Sienna works seamlessly and almost 100% better fuel mileage than the older Sienna.

I own a 19 odyssey about to buy a 22 sienna. Odyssey has a much firmer suspension, you feel every bump and you get a lot of head toss. The Sienna feels much more solid and the suspension is softer. Its a more comfortable van. I like performance cars, I have a model 3 performance and would take the softer ride of the Sienna any day.

Toyota has interesting styling. Not as mainstream, yes, but they combined Lexus SUV in the back with Nissan Quest boxiness on the sides, and Toyota Avalon on the front. At least two of those look nice.

Hi! This is a comment I posted for the 2021 KIA Carnival vs The Odyssey with the Sienna on the background.
Sorry to burst bubbles here, but while a new design with luxury features are enticing for the new KIA Carney, we really still have to wait for at least a year to see how dependable & how it lives up to it's hype. As a starter, no AWD option is not good at all.
If I will buy a minivan today, it will still be The Odyssey. May not have all the bells & whistles, but it'll run forever.
With this new Carney design, etc...scream of demand for new looks & features for Odyssey to be back in the mainstream next year. IF Carney performs well this trial year, it could take a lot of revenue away from Honda and gain new clientle unless a redesign & upgrades happens to it next year.
I believe a win-win situation for The Odyssey next year will be:
●1. Have model trims that matches the features of Carney at a striking competetive price (which is like a special attractive bargain price for a Honda).
●2. Have model trims that are above & unique that will blast away the top Carney trim.
■The #1 will result to: if I can get a Honda almost the same price with Carney, of course I'll be so happy to get the Honda.
■The #2 will result to:
These are for clients who can well afford the top of the line models ~ with all the uppermost upgrade & unique features, it will be like: "KIA what?"
Also with that scenario, Sienna may also feel the collateral damage.
The Odyssey did not become the No.1 minivan for flash in the pan, overnight reasons. They worked real hard in improving which resulted to very dependable mv's and happy owners.
All they need to do now is upgrading with both the strategy of matching the competition for the average buyers AND the other status of being on it's own league via unique & hard to duplicate features & luxuries for the high end buyers.

My family had a 2019 odyssey and we just bought 2021 odyssey touring, i suggest that you guys test drive the sienna first before making the decision. I test drove the sienna and it was really slow and the CVT was really loud too. The sienna did look good in person but it wasnt fun to drive imo.

@@andybub45 Yes, I want a fun minivan. Crossovers are unpractical, boring, look ugly and don’t have a Spacious Third row, their third row is meant for people below 4 feet. Station wagons are the most Fun Family vehicles but not much space like a Minivan, Full size SUVs are too expensive and drive like boats while getting 10 MPG, Minivans are spacious with perfect third row and good handling for a big car but one problem is lack of engine options. My odyssey only has a 280 Hp V6 however it is fast for a van, it does 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. Caranddriver has got 6.5 seconds in an Odyssey. I kind of want a 350 hp Van like, just imagine an Odyssey Type R with the 3.0L V6 Turbo making 355 hp with AWD, or if that can’t fit the engine, no problem a Sienna GR with the Turbo 3 cylinder making 300 hp and 288 lb ft of torque, turbo 3 cylinder is lighter than a V6 and gets good gas mileage making it the Hot minivan.

You're absolutely right. I just test drive the Seinna today and it was awful when I really thought I'd be driving home in a new van. Was not impressed at all and could not justify it for the expensive price tag. The deal breaker was the excessively loud wind noise coming from the windshield/front sides. Added to that was the strange and loud vibration of acceleration. Sienna is off my radar - going to test drive the Odyssey.
I test drove and sat in thr new Sienna and while it was a quiet driving engine was breathing hard on accel and inside especially 3rd row space was little cozy. Floaty drive too.
I have the 2020 honda. First time having a vehicle that doesnt always overdrive Everytime going uphill. I guess it is the 10s speed transmission. I had the 8 spd trans 17' highlander and although the claimed 300hp compare to the 280hp honda, the highlander always OD uphill.
Our 2012 Odyssey can barely get up to 65 on the interstate.
I'm actually shopping for one of these now. Probably more mid level versions. 1 annoying aspect of the Honda is you can't get the 4G/5G hotspot in all trim levels. You need to buy the Touring or Elite. Sienna has the feature in all levels. These days my kids have tablets for the car, I don't need or want a rear seat entertainment system. They break and are out of date almost immediately - who watches Blueray or DVD these days?
I have an Odyssey and I we put in dvd's. No need to pay a monthly fee and it makes my 1 and 2 year old happy. You realize people have different wants and needs in vehicles right?
My mom and brother both have Sienna. I have a odyssey(got a better deal). Can't go wrong with either. I think sienna look a little better and odyssey drives smoother(more nimble).
I like odyssey because of t v… 😅 I can relate that my son given me the same answer when asked about these two minivans.
FWIW, I test drove a 2020 Odyssey and with a light foot, and cruise control set at 60 I was at an indicated 31 mpg in no time flat.
considering you're measuring MPG, I'm assuming you mean 60MPH, you know hybrids have very little benefits on the highway, if you drive 80% highway with no stop/go traffic, sure I agree with your statement.
We need a family who have 3 kids with car seats and strollers to truly test these vehicles
Maybe I'm biased to Honda, but I really like the fact that even top trims have 8 seats and that the 8th is so easy to remove. Also the third row is more spacious then the Sienna. The Sienna has a few nice things that the Odyssey doesn't have and I much prefer the interior design, but even though the Odyssey is getting old, it looks like a much more cohesive package. They really put the effort into it to make everything work together. The Sienna looks like a slice of Lexus, a slice of Prius, a slice of Highlander, and a slice of Odyssey, where as the Odyssey looks like a 100% Honda van.
The only downside with the Odyssey is it’s built like garbage. I’ve owned a 2018 Odyssey Elite trim (the new chassis, pre-2021 refresh obviously) since December 2017 and the number of issues it currently has are ridiculous. The passenger side third row refuses to tumble, the passenger side sliding door randomly opens again when trying to close, the transmission (10 speed) randomly refuses to go into reverse and when the “transmission failure” comes onto the screen all of the front and rear bumper sensors also undergo failure, the Rear Entertainment System randomly shuts down, the Cabin Watch camera randomly shuts down, the entire front entertainment screen randomly shuts down taking out Apple CarPlay.... it’s easily been the most problematic of any Honda I’ve owned (and I’ve owned 4). This is my last Honda, and can’t recommend them anymore based off this.
Man this is a tough call. If you want AWD. Toyota. If you want power with the vtec engine and paddle shifter and in my opinion lightly better sound insulation and overall better thicker feel to material. Honda. But really, were splitting hairs. they're both beautiful. And I would totally drive this. I don't even have a family. I'd rock any one of those to work daily.
Dang 44.8 mpg???? Gosh I was a honda guy until I owned Previa, 1st Gen RAV4 and 2nd gen Prius. That hybrid is so good made me want to drive further and see how many more miles I can travel using one tank. I hated Previa mpg or any van or minivan mpg. But with hybrid in a minivan that's the most logical thing they should make. Long road trip need long range van or minivan.
I managed to get 685 miles to a single tank of gas in my 21 sienna. the tank is 18 gallons, but in cold weather you can only use 15. middle of summer, I was getting 40mpg consistently when loaded, and 45 to 50 empty all summer.
And this is why I stopped watching Edmunds, you guys are so biased, despite the Odyssey having a dated interior and worse safety systems u pick it because it does 0-60 faster like who is ever going to notice that in a minivan but u didn't talk about how much money the Sienna would save families over the years and how it would be way more reliable or how it has an AWD system, u know the things people care about. It's like u guys are payed by Honda or just extremely biased, if it was me paying for one of these, the Sienna anyday over the Odyssey, its just a better vehicle and the reasons why u can't remove the seats is because Toyota implemented airbags into the seats and I would gladly take safety of my kids over being able to remove the seats for an extra 5 inches of space
Just cause the Odyssey interior is outdated doesn't mean it's a bad thing. The interior still look just as nice as it did when it came out in 2018. Even the generation before this was nice too. Some people just like Honda's take on interior better then anything else. Just like me only wanting to buy Sony TVs cause I like how they do everything down to the buttons.
Power is as important as fuel economy to me. Power is what gets you going or could even help you out of a tough situation on the roads. Being able to merge in a timely manner is important. If you take the price difference into account then they would be your gas money difference over the years. Of course the Sienna will be better if you are going to keep it for several years and beyond.
Styling is subjective so each its own. I do like how the Sienna looks on the outside and especially the back is a lot nicer then the Odyssey. Each vehicle has their own features that people will need to evaluate to see if they need it or not. I like the magic seats on the Odyssey. Plus it has 8 seats on the top Elite trim while the Sienna only offer that on their lower trims only. RES might be important to some families as well which I don't think the Sienna offers. I didn't see it in this video and it was the top of the line Platinum model. Having AWD is nice though but I don't think it's a true system though. It's better then nothing though when you think about it. Hands free opening is really nice though and I use it more then I thought I would (I have a 19 Pilot Touring AWD 8).
Saying that I do wish gas was better on my Pilot but I do like the power though. It's a trade off and I know it. I thought about getting a hybrid in the past but to me I love power more then the saving at the gas pump. To each their own.

I just drove from Ga to Ca and back in 10 days (over 5k miles) stopping each day to see landmarks. Only way this was possible was by using a comfortable minivan, Pacifica. My kids were happy. I want to buy a minivan now, and don’t know which. I like Pacifica stow n go but reliability is a deal breaker. I own a Honda and Toyota, they’re my favorite brands, have owned multiple types.
Thank you so much for this video. I recently purchased the 2021 Honda Odyssey EXL model. About a week later I noticed the 2021 Toyota Sienna on the road. Based on your video I'm happy with decision. I have one question. I have never been able to pump more than 16.9 gallons of gas into my vehicle, but according to Honda's spect sheet I should be able to pump at least 19.5 gallons. I drove my 2021 Honda Odyssey from New York City to Miami twice already. This gave me the opportunity to drive until the gas was fully empty. I made sure to drive until the needle was dangerously low. And still never able to pump more than 16.9 gallons. Any thoughts on this? It's such a deal breaker and this was not my experience with my 2011 Honda Odyssey LX. I will be very appreciative for any response regarding this matter. Subscribed!
When the gas nozzle automatically stop..you should, carefully, manually keep on filling the tank until you can't fill it..this should put extra 5 gallons to your tank..
The 5 gallon is the emergency reserve. If you want to be able to drive until you can fill 19.5. Just drive it until your car dies
@@32445477 no, don't do this. you will fill up the evap system and the charcoal canister tank vent which will cause a massive repair bill. you don't want to top them off, you can overfill these.
the sienna does something similar. its an 18 gallon tank. the car will only let you run down to 15 gallons before it shows "empty". this is both a safety feature to make sure you don't run out, but also to make sure that the high pressure direct inject fuel system can get enough supply and not have air in it, as this can cause misfires and cause the van to not start again.

Great video. I have an 09 Odyssey still going strong and was considering the Sienna. The fact that Toyota's rust a lot and they have a non-removable second row will turn a lot of people off right off the bat, despite the better gas mileage. The Odyssey is a family weekend warrior or a workhorse. You can put a piece of plywood inside of it flat, or use it as a contractor vehicle! Don't be fooled by vacuums and fridges. Rest stops are not too far away to empty your garbage and grab a cold drink. There's been tons of problems with the cabin watch if you Google it and also Honda's 10 speed is known to lock up into park on the highway!! Hopefully the software or something has fixed this now. If they sold mine '09 as a brand new model I would buy it again. The top blowing vents are the best in the older odysseys. The side vents don't cut, if you have a child in the back seat it will not get cooled facing backward. No way going Chrysler! Lol. Japanese vehicles just do it better!!

The only things Toyota and Honda do better than Chrysler is reliability. And as somebody who has driven two Chrysler vans past 100K, I would argue even that is greatly exaggerated.

We have Odyessy and while its been a very good van it has a engineering flaw where it uses Electricity to auto shift the car. Which means when your alternator goes bad (And they all do) even with a Jump to get you going your car will shift hard almost like putting it in neutral and slam-bang it into gear. Not good for the car. Transmissions use to be made where they ran fine even without a battery or alternator. if your battery gets low in the cold or the alternator goes out even a jump start will not get you out of the woods due the transmission issue.
Oh man I LOVE the Sienna's new look. It actually looks good for once. Odyssey looks fine, refresh didn't really do anything for me. And the Pacifica looks absolutely boring.

I was surprised to learn that the new Sienna comes with ventilated rear brakes. Why is this? Do other minivans do? are they expecting big break loads? Being a hybrid I would expect most of the brake load to be done by the electric motors.
