Thank you for this video. I just changed the plugs on my 2013 Ford Expeditions with the 5.4 engine. Truck has 179,000 miles and this was the first plug change. Your directions were perfect and all went well. New plugs were gapped at .0041. Most of the old ones came out around .0060. Definitely improved acceleration and expecting better gas mileage.
we want to see the far back plug on passenger side done..all the you tubes like to show the easy one's to get too! if you do the hardest one we can figure the other's .
We didn't show it because it really wasn't any more difficult that the ones that we did. Now if we were talking about a 1996 Jimmy with the 4.3 and the drives side rear plug near the fireawall..yah blast me then..lol Wasn't too bad of a job bud.
If you can get the spark plug to turn even a smidgen you can try to turn it a 1/4 turn then turn it back in reverse, try turn it 1/2 turn forward and then turn it a 1/4 turn backwards. Repeat this procedure until it loosens up. Maybe try to spray a little penetrating oil on it to see if you can break it free.
Please a some question is the same procedures for a liincoln Navigator 2012 ? And can you tell me the name of the nemesis os whatever the name is of that grease tht you put on the threads of the plugs ??!
Yeah, That two piece plug issue on the 5.4 was fixed in 2008 (I think) my 2012 was pretty easy to do. The new replacement plugs you buy will be the new design so they shouldn't break off in the head when removing them.
Nice job ' i noticed there was no fuel rail removing or anything major like intake manifold, throttle body. Are the plugs closest to the fire wall hard to get to , like on the Ford F-150 V8's ? Sometimes those are a real pain 😭 thanks for sharing your video ' " Mechanics Rule " 👍
Should have just use your 5/8 socket to get plugs in & out since it had the rubber in it & then changed back to your 14mm to tighten new ones. Just my 2 cents
That's exactly what I was worried about when I bought my 2008 expedition, so I got a mechanic to change them out. I just bought a 2012 navigator with 243,000 but will do them on my own. From my research others have sprayed a penetrating spray prior to taking them out 🙏
I am a novice mechanic. I tinker with lawnmowers and go-karts. At least on the 2013, I had plenty of room to work around the heater hoses. On a couple of the plugs, there wasn't a lot of range for the ratchet so I just took it slow. I worked very carefully and slowly. It probably took me about 3.5 hours for the whole.
Well I'm not sure what I just saw it was a one cylinder 5.4 I'd like to see the hard cylinders to see how you get to those this was not really informative if you're actually looking for how to do the spark plugs on a 5.4 yes use product on it but that doesn't tell you how to get to those back cylinders
Okay so it would be helpful next time that you were to start which one of the back holes preferably passenger side which is the most difficult to get to on this engine and in this Frame that is built around it called a cab firewall. The rudimentary part was very helpful where do you want to learning how to install spark plugs did a good job explaining how to clean and prep and then re-install the plug but you didn't follow through with how to fully remove spark plugs when they're in a difficult position all you said was all the same plugs no problem
If we ran into any other issues removing the rest of them, we would have given you guys a heads-up and what to watch for, but it was pretty straight forward on this year, make model.
I'm having a hard time with 8, as it is extremely dirty and I cannot get the plug out. It is caked in dirt around the plug. Help from anyone would be awesome!
@@davidjones2457 You are so right. Every time I tried to do this, open the hood and see how difficult will be to reach those in the back I just close the hood and start to blame Ford design engineers.
I agree. When doing my MDX plugs it was hard to get to the 3 on the back side of the engine as well. I'm sure with the right sized extension and one of those rotating adapters you'll be fine. What I found I had to do was sometimes was get the socket, extension and rotating adapter in the spark plug well first then put my rachet on. Hopefully this helps 🤷
@@HomeownerRepair This was outstanding. Thanks for doing it… My 2014 Expedition also has the 5.4 and it just turned 140K, the check engine light came on for the first time. I had it checked and it needed plugs, etc…

How is the condition at that mileage
how was your 179k Miles spark plug looks?

how about showing us how to get to the ones that are obstructed. i'm pretty sure that's what most of us clicked the link for.
It's the same way. It's not that bad of a job
Yupper
Anti seize is not required on newer plugs but if you do make sure it's nickel and not aluminum/copper or you will have misfire etc...
Thanks for checking out the video. Hope this helped you out.
I was wondering that, it looked like copper anti seize was used
Very informative video.
Any other tips if plug ends up seized?

Thank you, was able to replace my plugs. A bit of penetrating oil and forward-reverse movement did the trick.
hello, what brand of silicone spray did you use? thanks
It was a can we picked up locally. I have this brand in our Amazon store. It works well amzn.to/3d5d9RV
@@HomeownerRepair thank you.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
What size spark plug remover did y’all use
The socket size is stated in the video
14mm spark plug socket auto zone have them for $10.00
How can you tell if my expedition has a brown or black boot. Is there a difference?
Take it off and look. Black is bad brown is good.
Thank you foe helping out. Just noticed this question.
Sorry I just saw this question. Looks like one of our viewers answered it for you. Have a great day!
when you say "silicone spray" is that the same as, let's say, CRC Heavy Duty Silicone spray?
Should be fine
blow all the debri pryor to removing coil ..is what I do..and the vacuum works too.
Thanks for the added tips, typically what we do as well.
Please a some question is the same procedures for a liincoln Navigator 2012 ? And can you tell me the name of the nemesis os whatever the name is of that grease tht you put on the threads of the plugs ??!
The grease is called Never Seize. They have it at the counter in small packets at the auto parts store.
Thanks for watching
Did Ford correct the spark plug issues with those engines????

Which spark plug was the one you changed first? Was it the 5th one?

No, the plugs we not that bad to do on this truck.

Thanks 👍
i just tried a 5/8 socket and it's too big! i've never had that before! mine is a 2011 exped.
Hope the video helped you out.
@@HomeownerRepair It did. I had to go buy a 9/16ths spkplg socket. Exped hums now.

so why not use 5/8 to tighten new ones?
A dealer quoted me 472 for a full spark plug replacement on my 2013 expedition. They’re trying to screw me right?
Probably an average price from the dealer.
$80+ (retail) for 8 plugs. minimum labor charge is probably $120/hr x 2 hrs... = $320 at a minimum
I'd have them do it for that price
Mine wanted 750
I did it myself, don’t be afraid, just have the correct tools
I have 2011 Navigator and it has same engine.
Changing the spark plugs was a mechanic nightmare.
Broke 5

Did you have any tips for maneuvering around the heater hoses on the passenger side?

These are 9/16 plugs. Little heads up
Thanks for the added tip!
I got a 9/16 magnetic spark plug gasket at autozone for 8 bucks perfect fit made the job easier
With NGK you never have to gap
Yeah you can't gap the spark plugs I tossed in, they are pointed at the electrode

All of the other cylinders were the same way same procedure. This truck was a 2012 Ford went to the one piece spark plug design around 2009.

LUMPY IS GOOD!!
He's not too bad..lol
As usual, nobody shows how to do the 3 and 4 spark plugs, the worst ones to reach.
The whole job was pretty smooth. It wasn't that bad or we would have explained what we had to do.
