Great video. For the 5.4 3V you have to mention the cam phasers, chain tensioners, and chain guides. It’s going to fail, and cost a lot of money. Also, switch to 30 weight oil from 20.
I have a 2008 XLT with 181,000 miles, love it. Rock solid except the rocker panels rusted out (I replaced them). This video is spot on. The only other niggling issue is running 5W20 oil per Ford's recommendation....seems they did that for just the US market to improve fuel economy. Other countries same engine is specified for 5W30, so that is what I do. And of course, change the oil every 5000 miles and use full synthetic, and Ford OEM oil filters. Do this and the engine lasts and avoids some of the common problems like timing chain, phasers, etc.
I own a 2007 Expedition and honestly it's one of the most trouble free vehicles I've ever owned. With only 138,000 miles on it , I haven't experienced any of the problems he went through, but I did upgrade Struts to Monroes and it rode better than new , drivers side window regulator went bad , and actuator that controls the vents in the rear went bad. Replaced spark plugs with 117,000 miles along with a bad coil. Only major issue I have had was recently with the fuel pump going out. But hell, it's 14 years old and I had 137,000 miles on it when the pump went bad. I would buy another Expedition tomorrow if I had too , great vehicles...
1. First problem was no alignment from ford , at 10 000 miles tires was cut and bold 2. Lug nuts crack and lose their chrome coating but I ordered nice lug nuts from summit racing 3. TPMS sensors inside tires are mount on straps and those straps are loosing 4. Driver side window mechanism fail 5. Oxygen sensors at 60-80k miles 6. Rust on aluminum tailgate 7. Corrosion after 10 years on body under side steps 8. Vent motors (under dash) 9. Ac evaporator (under dash) 10. Models with air suspension - air bags 11. Models with electric running boards - motors 12. Front seats heaters failure (both) 13. Rear suspension bushings (after 7 years)
The sparkplug and heads were redesigned about October of 2007, the date being on your driver's side. Always good to see if you have that updated part. At around 180K, good to have saved up for a full timing job. If you are detail oriented and handy, about $800 in parts. While the engine is open, replace all the roller rockers with the upgraded part, and also install a new high volume oil pump. With new phasers, solenoids, and chain guides, you will be good to go for another 200K or more. If you can find a good master mechanic, they will charge $3000-$4000 for the job. Sounds extreme, but even Mazdas and other 'premium' cars require this costly but essential service. A/C plenums can go bad. You will know when you hear a 'clicking' when the plenum door gets stuck either in the dash or by the row two floor vents. A shop will charge $800 or more to R&R, so if you have thin arms and small hands, and a couple swivel head closed end wrenches, you can do the job yourself. If you have the deluxe 6-CD Player, it will stop ejecting the CD's. It is usually because switch contacts inside the changer get dirty and all they require is cleaning. The CD Changer is easy to remove, but it isn't easy to get inside that player (made by Pioneer). The automatic foot rails need regular cleaning and lubrication. Scrubbing all around the motorized hinges and then a quality 'dry' lubricant will extend the life and function. I've owned my 2008 Expy for six years, 206K miles, and it is a runner and with extraordinary highway fuel economy . . . 22-25 mpg . . . but, is a pig in the city . . . and my unit has the 7 contact trailer connection and heavy duty rear struts, so is rated to tow 9200 lbs . . . those are rare and definitely check that out if you are shopping used.
I have 9200 miles on my 14 Expedition. Runs fine now but there have been problems in the past. All shock absorbers leaked before 5000 miles. Had throttle body problems, Power steering pump problems, Fuel pump problems. All repaired now. Always keep up the maintenance on it. Here lately it has been problem free. Hope it stays that way for another 10 years. 😊
158k on my 2011 Expedition. Never had a problem with the MAF, EGR valve sensor, spark plugs, aluminum body panel, or the resistor. Only problem I ever had which is a problem with ALL cars is I had to replace the blend door actuators because the gears are ALWAYS made of plastic and break. I had to replace vapor canister vent solenoid once. Thats it. The best car I’ve ever owned.
205K miles on my 2015 EL EXT 4x4. Original transmission (6 speed) failed under warranty (70K miles) and replaced. I hear this is uncommon. Zero issues since. Drivers side power seat has bad gears, started failing by 100K miles. Steering wheel telescoping motor starting failing at 100K miles. Drivers side turbo startling leaking coolant from cracked o-ring at 100K miles. Suspension starting going bad at ~100K miles. Replaced at 150K miles with Monroe (drives the same as new). Throttle body failed at 150K miles. Blend actuator for blower zone failed at 180K miles. Water pump failed at 180K miles. Coolant hoses rotted out and started leaking coolant everywhere at 200K miles. Backup camera died at 200K miles. MAF sensor showing signs of failure at 205K miles, e.g. rough idle. Outside of this, it's been the usual maintenance items. 5K oil changes and spark plugs changed every 100K miles; still on original coils. Never had a misfire. As far as wear items, my 2015 eats breaks, rotors and tires. I need new rotors every other break job, which is expensive. Worn tires every 40-50k miles, no matter how cheap or expensive. Even wear, zero alignment issues, even when suspension was soft. Tires just don't last. The 4x4 components are rock solid. I do a lot of high altitude, winter conditions and never been stranded, even on worn tires (heavy and evenly balanced for an SUV frame). Overall it's a very reliable vehicle. No phaser or timing chain issues so far (fingers crossed). I plan to keep until it's not worth fixing anymore.
Other mentions: 1. Timing chains and cam phasers failure 2. Transmission sun gear shearing off around 2010-2015 years 3. Fuel pump control module is also a common failure I work at a bus yard, although not an expedition those engines and transmissions were used in various models and we had a high amount of transmission failures around 60k ,
2007 Ford Expy with 212K miles. Replaced timing chain and cam phasers at 192K and replaced transmission at 175K. Still rolling strong and plan to reach 300K!
LOL, the MAF bit is in regards to every mass air equipped equipped vehicle. It's not a problem exclusive to Ford. For that matter, cleaning the maf sensor isn't noteworthy. I check mine once every few months. The second gripe I have....everyone thinks ALL the 5.4 are bad about spark plugs. After 2008 the 5.4, 4.6 used different spark plugs that didn't break. Or spit plugs out. Yeah, phasers are sometimes known to go bad, but changing your oil and using good oil will go a long way in preventing this. I own and drive daily an '11 Expy. It's a great truck. The blower motor resistor is indeed a common fail item. Easy fix, though.
Yup, same. '11 EL version. Love my truck. Just replace blower motor resistor today as it happens. Just the resistor cause though cause there was no corrosion or melting or signs the motor had gone bad. Resistors have a lifespan, and my truck is 10 years old and still had the original resistor. 🤷♂️
Actually, it was *during* the '08 production that they switched spark plug types and coil boot types...so you have to know exactly when your '08 Expedition came off the line to know the correct parts to buy. You can find out when on that sticker that's on the frame ...when you open the door you see it, usually near the floor. Mine was built in July '07 so I use Motorcraft SP546 plugs and black coil boots, Motorcraft ignition coil DG511
2011 XLT purchased in 4/12. 153k miles and been very reliable. Power window regulators for front windows are common. 6R80 trans does not have 150k fluid. That's a crock. Change it every 50-60k. Ford Orange antifreeze is only good for 5 yrs or 100k. Change that to Yellow. Usual liftgate blistering. I don't care. Never a front end alignment. On 3rd set of tires and prob need to change in 10k more. Speaking of Kuhmo HT51's are awesome. And yes as others have noted, brown coil on plug are good plugs. Change those at 60-70k also. Truck drives like new still. Will be doing cam chain tensioners before explosion.
I have a 2011 Expedition 5.4 Triton 3v and I have to let everyone know, if you have this engine, replace the timing chain tensioners, VTC solenoids, cam phasers, and oil pump at or around 100k miles. The sooner the better because the biggest problem is the timing chain tensioners, the seal around them fails and allows the oil pressure on the tensioner to bleed off, causing a noisy start from the chain slapping around and it can cause a lot of expensive damage to the engine! I managed to catch it early and I'm glad I did. Not a bad idea to also replace the valve roller followers and hydraulic lifters while you're in there, they like to go bad too. Hey, you know what they say, Fords are great after you replace all the Ford parts!
@@simpleinverso8628 sloppy chain noises, but the issue is widely known so try to get it fixed around the 100k range....I wanted to test drive one at a dealership and he told me it wasn't ready and I guessed it was the chain and he smiled! This should have been recalled with the spark plug issue, Ford must have friends in the White house or something!
I’m going to buy a 09 expedition with 137k miles and the owner said her vehicle idols loud… thank you for very helpful video I’ll use these tips to check on the vehicle I’m about to purchase. I’m excited
Great video. My wife's 2011 just started this bubbling on the tailgate, but was luckily manufactured after the spark plug issue. Only other thing I've seen that thought would make the list is the blend door actuator. I've replaced ours twice, and when I replaced it the first time, the one I pulled out wasn't original either (previous owner must have replaced it too).
Blend door; hint, don't turn the temp control all the way to either end. That's when the parts reach stress points and the little plastic piece snaps. I was warned about this long ago, and so far, no blend door actuator failures. The difference in vent temps is virtually nil, you won't notice it at all.
Thank you for this video! I just bought a 2017 Expedition, and its had a rough idle and is hesitating to respond when I push the accelerator. I now have something else I can check to see if it will help.

Apply dielectric grease to the steel bolts threads and back side of the bolt contacts the aluminum. Is called electrolysis. "Exchange of atoms between 2 dissimilar metals". Same thing with the spark plugs. No manufacturer in the nearly 39 years I've worked on vehicles has the manufacturer applied dielectric grease to the spark plug "threads". . Tha same can be said for unitized wheel bearings and the hub surface where the rotors make contact. As well as where the aluminum rims make contact with the rotors or drums.
I have a 2008 Expedition Limited with 250,000 miles, very trouble free with the exception of the cam phasers. The cam phasers went at 190,000 and cost $2000 to fix, no problems since.
Great video about the 2007 to 2017 Ford Expedition. Thought I have never experienced any of the problems in this video. I have experienced some other problems and or issues with my 2008 Ford Expedition. One of them is the front drivers and front passenger side windows. The wires/cables that are connected to the drive motor and to the part of the windows. Keeps breaking and I have tried to mickey mouse them back together again. By soldering where the little led ball used to be another little ball. That worked for a little while but it didn't take long before they broke again. My only other solution was to just break down and buy replacements. But even those didn't take long before they did the same thing. I still have a few other issues with it, but I am not going to write a book about them. The only thing that I can say about my 2008 Ford Expedition is. That I have never had any problems with the engine. As long as I kept up on the maintenance with regular oil changes, air filters and checking to make sure all the fluids are topped off. The damn thing still runs like it is brand new.
Just went thru the resistor burned up, Apparently got so hot the pigtail wiring had burn spots in it.New pigtail connector and resistor, Back in business!(2011 expedition).Oh and don't get knock off replacements go back with motorcraft.
I was surprised to not have the engine mentioned since Explorers are notorious for having cylinder 5 go out around 100k miles. Could you tell us if we have to watch out for that at all on Expeditions? Thanks!
Thank you for all the great information in your videos. They are very easy to follow, understand, and apply. I love that your content contains additional videos to reference, with DIY-friendly, detailed steps, for one of the specific car issue covered in a video like this. Well Done!!
Just rolled the 2014 Navigator over 200k miles. Just bought new quickstruts from Monroe. Now looking to solve what seems to be bad injection when gently accelerating at highway speeds. I've run out and EXTREMLY low on gas more times than I can count cuz I'm dumb. Other than hardly any issues!
EcoBoost models with non PI engines (rare option!) will have turbo and water pump issues at 100k. While you're truck is torn apart it would be of the better of your interest to replace the VCT (Variable Cam Timing) solenoids because they arent far from failing. This is for the standard 3.5 ecoboost. I have the Police Engine option in my 2016, no issues running 56k strong, I have been told they are more durable as well. 🤞🤞🤞
You can have low milage 5.4 engine problems also. The problem is time. At a low milage the mechanical parts may not be worn out, but the rubber seals could be. After a decade or two the timing chain tensioner rubber seals can go bad, the plastic timing chain guides crack, the O ring on the oil pump pick up tube flatten out and leak, front crankshaft seal leak, valve cover gaskets leak, plus other seals and gaskets. Something to be aware of.
Thanks for the video. I learned the panels were aluminum. I have that corrosion problem. Mine also has a water leak. Left it parked for weeks and rained on. Now the footwell is full of water on both driver and passenger. Is this common?
What nothing about the wheel hubs? I have owned 2 Expeditions and 03 and on my 12, and that is the only thing i have to consistently change. just hit 173k and my front motor blower went. Expeditions have been very reliable.
I replaced the blower motor, resistor and blower relay. The blower still blows on high.and when I turn the system off , the blower stays on. Do you have any ideas?

I have a question mine does like a vibration type thing when Am driving anywhere from 30-60 mph, I’m not sure what it is it’s not like a death wobble or anything sometimes it almost feels like the transmission is about to jump out of the car lol! If that makes any sense!
Not gunna bring up the cam phaser issue? That is a big, expensive fix on these engines. I got 260,000km on my 5.4L before I had to replace them, have heard of a lot of them going at around 130,000km.
Got a key not wanting to program to the truck how do I fix was starting went to put a new battery on the fob and theft light came on reconnect fob but key won't start the truck
Hey I just bought a 2008 Ford Expedition in I feel like I’m hvn all these pbl just got the ac fix in the temp gage now it’s not getting cool n also it’s running hot wat do I do
there is no EGR system since 2003 there is no aluminum panels in ford expeditions until 4th gen. broken spark plugs is from 2005 to 2008 after that ford changed cylinder heads design so if you have 2009 and up you have regular spark plugs MAF and blower motor resistor is not expeditions specific issue it well happen to any car :) real issues i had with my expedition is weak struts that leaks oil after short time and the ac blend door actuators and they are easy to fix thanks
I just got a 07 expedition max eddie bauer EL 3000258Kms really nice truck the owner took good care of it, everything works but the cd player super clean inside n out the engine is spotless BUT when i got home n put it in park the engine started to shake lik it was gonna stall. The next day i noticed a slow oil leak where i parked. When i was in town it ran fine. Whats ur thoughts? Thanks

2012 expedition limited anybody had a problem with a p0304 code in there 4 cylinder saying it was a bad coil pack change out all spark plugs and changed out cylinder 4 coil pack and the check engine light came back on after three days! Should I had changed all 8 coils as well and should I use motor craft parts or does it matter because I only used motor craft spark plugs and a different brand coil! And someone told me to change out all my injectors! Anyone had this problem?
Have a 2014 Ford expedition. I get a double honk when locking the car w the remote. All doors are closed, trunk/hood as well. Any help or recommendations welcomed. Thanks in advance
A common problem with these is the hood latch sensor on the expedition/f150 goes bad and senses the hood is not latched even though it may be closed completely. You’ll also experience ghost alarms if this is the case.
It’s funny you mentioned the spark plugs on these on my mother’s vehicle. Hers was a 4.63 valves similar design. I told her to have a shop do spark plugs just in case there was an issue with one breaking off so I wouldn’t have to deal with the headache, I ended up having a headache on my own to deal with measure to clean out debris, reinstalling, spark plugs, and had been of electrical tape. I’m assuming from a wire loom that fell down in the cylinder they had reinstalled the spark plug and somehow made it so that there was no, contact with the plug in the head, causing it to have a dead cylinder pull the plug out took the tape out. Reinstalled ran just fine.
Bought my 2007 expedition Eddie Bauer and it had 140,000 ish miles. Trans axle leak-$350/ both front windows crapped out - $960/ fuel pump -$250/ thats just what I remember getting fixed oh and thats not counting the rattle noise I hear every time I start this pos! From videos Ive watched if I get it fixed now its another $350 to $400 but if I ignore it then the engine blows and then its several thousand dollars for an engine replacement. One of the worst vehicles Ive ever bought!
Maintenance is one thing. A pos is different. I have a ford fusion that has 250,000 miles on it and it runs like its new. So I know how to perform maintenance on my vehicles.
Update on engine tic. Lifter issue at 178,000 miles. Had a ford dealer try to want and charge me $9,100 TO repair and said They would have to keep it several months! I said I only paid $10,000 for it! Took it to a good mechanic dud it for $2,100.

What would you look for if the driver and front passenger heated/cooled seats are no longer functioning? The lights come in but you cannot feel the heat or coolness in the seats.
Idk I think it just comes down to maintainance. Ive had mutiple 5.4's Had 2 works trucks, one had 290k miles and other had 310k miles. Also had a navigator with 200k miles.
it's just an attachment that you use with a socket wrench except that inside the socket it's fitted for spark plugs instead of normal bolts. Very easy to use, just apply slow, steady pressure. Just do it by hand, do it with the engine warm, and don't use an electric wrench or impact driver to remove them and you won't run into problems. Also a little squirt of penetrating oil down in the cylinder after you've got the ignition coil off will help.
You missed 2 very common problems with these. The cam phasers like to fail, this can be expensive and take a fair bit of time to fix. And the fuel pump control module likes to fail. It has an aluminum housing and is bolted to steal with steal bolts, this causes corrosion and the housing will leak and the electronics in side then get wet and fail.
Cam phasers is the biggest problem with the Fords with the 3 valve Triton and the only fix is replace the engine because customers kept coming back after the cam phasers were replaced.
If the phasers were changed and kept coming back, the oil pump was gone, and probably didn't use ford oem to replace. I see aftermarket always go bad on these, but not oem when replaced.
So i got some weird problems with mine. It's an 04 and whenever i turn on the AC, if i come to a stop, it shuts off. Just today i had the curiosity to play with the window buttons on the driver side. I held one and a noise coming from und the hood slightly changed. The more buttons i pushed at the same time, the more the noise changed. Eventually i held all 4 window buttons at once and the truck just shut off. No idea what is going on. I'm assuming something electrical? Anyone have any idea?

Thanks! I had 2 of the 5 and a third that was related to air quality - the throttle body
Most recently is the AC unit that was recalled. Be sure to get that fixed ASAP as it's an electrical issue that's a fire hazard. (Mine is a 2015 V6)
Other mentions:
1. Timing chains and cam phasers failure
2. Transmission sun gear shearing off around 2010-2015 years
3. Fuel pump control module is also a common failure
I work at a bus yard, although not an expedition those engines and transmissions were used in various models and we had a high amount of transmission failures around 60k ,
Had Timing chain & cam phaser fail at 105k... took the whole engine
Got 196k in my 12 expedition, original cam phasers, original transmission
Those are all pretty chill problems for a vehicle to have. Most of them you can fix yourself pretty easily.
Just saw your video for the first time loved it zero wasted words. I think you did a great job thanks for all the help.
Best of luck!
Also, Ford 3V 5.4L do not have an EGR that I'm aware of.
People should change transmission fluid every 50k-60k miles no matter *what* kind of vehicle they drive!!
i just bought one of these vehicles, very informative video, thank you for making this. by the way, a clean engine area is a happy engine area.
About to do the same thing
How would you describe those noises
😂 😂 😂!!!

Yes, good man. Finally, somebody that says to replace the blower motor as well. The resistor one of them been there done that type things.

Thank you for this video, Nibbler is now ready to be picked up!
I was surprised to not have the engine mentioned since Explorers are notorious for having cylinder 5 go out around 100k miles. Could you tell us if we have to watch out for that at all on Expeditions? Thanks!
How often should timing chains be changed on these?
Thank you for all the great information in your videos. They are very easy to follow, understand, and apply. I love that your content contains additional videos to reference, with DIY-friendly, detailed steps, for one of the specific car issue covered in a video like this. Well Done!!
Just rolled the 2014 Navigator over 200k miles. Just bought new quickstruts from Monroe. Now looking to solve what seems to be bad injection when gently accelerating at highway speeds. I've run out and EXTREMLY low on gas more times than I can count cuz I'm dumb. Other than hardly any issues!
I just bought a 2014 Expedition King Ranch with 39k miles and hope I have the same luck as you. I'll be changing the oil every 3k miles.
+Paul Cochran Thanks for the feedback!
great video ! I do most of my repairs myself so this helped out. I do love my 2014 expedition.
Appreciate this video. Great for people like me looking to upgrade to a Family vehicle that’s affordable and RELIABLE!
I thought they switched the new expedition 15 and up especially on platinum models to v6 twin turbo engine with more Hp no spark plug issues
[The blend door actuator is a major Ford problem too.]
My Flex is doing it... again... we've replaced it 3 times...
Would the blower motor resistor apply for front and rear air?
Ritchie Cunningham was Fonzi's mechanic?
I believe the emissions you meant during the egr portion was nitrogen oxide (NOx) not nitrous oxide (N2O)
What nothing about the wheel hubs? I have owned 2 Expeditions and 03 and on my 12, and that is the only thing i have to consistently change. just hit 173k and my front motor blower went. Expeditions have been very reliable.

Can anyone tell me wheres the egr valve located i cant find it.
there is no EGR system since 2003
there is no aluminum panels in ford expeditions until 4th gen.
broken spark plugs is from 2005 to 2008 after that ford changed cylinder heads design so if you have 2009 and up you have regular spark plugs
MAF and blower motor resistor is not expeditions specific issue it well happen to any car :)
real issues i had with my expedition is weak struts that leaks oil after short time and the ac blend door actuators and they are easy to fix

Reinstalled ran just fine.

you should do a video showing us how to use the spark plug removal tool
it's just an attachment that you use with a socket wrench except that inside the socket it's fitted for spark plugs instead of normal bolts.

+Badmünky Thanks for the feedback!
"Steel" not steal.
Cam phasers is the biggest problem with the Fords with the 3 valve Triton and the only fix is replace the engine because customers kept coming back after the cam phasers were replaced.
The only fix is to get another car/SUV/truck that is not ford.
I found it funny that they didn’t mention the most common issue which very likely ends in scrapping the vehicle due to crazy costs for replacement
If the phasers were changed and kept coming back, the oil pump was gone, and probably didn't use ford oem to replace. I see aftermarket always go bad on these, but not oem when replaced.
Ford's 4.6l v8 are very reliable
