    I ran into this exact issue with Spark Plugs last year. I bought them on Amazon from FixaPart. I left a lengthy review with pictures comparing the 515's I pulled out, the 546's I bought from Amazon and the 546's I bought from the local AutoZone. There was a huge difference. I had a nasty misfire after installing the counterfeit's. I removed them and returned them. No questions asked.

    Another good video. As a tech myself you always keep the old part and compare the new one to the old one. I have seen the new part have updated design. However, keep and compare the two for mounting bolts and other issues. Another problem is the factory don't use grease when installing coil on plug boots. When you remove it for plug replacement the boot will tear causing misfire. Use spray lubricant and wait a while before removing coil on plug.

    Brian, I also noticed the radius on the bottom of the ground strap on the spark plugs is different. The OEM plug has a radius and the fake is much flatter. I'm guessing the OEM radius design is to give a little longer life by providing more equidistant spark paths along the radius as the ground strap gets arc gouged to death. On the coils I noticed the plastic parting lines are different. Also, the ejector pins in the plastic molds are also in different locations.

    • @rhyoliteaquacade
      @rhyoliteaquacade ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the OEM had a chamfered end of the tube and the counterfeit was ground flat and sharp. You don't want sharp hard edges in the combustion chamber or you will have a hot spot and pre-ignition engine knocking. Be careful SVT folks with superchargers and 900HP+ dyno pulls. Maybe that is why your engines fail?

      @@FordTechMakuloco Yeah, you really hit on a tough issue for any consumer. I bought what I think is an OEM part based on your video, but the spring isn't protruding from the sleeve. The old part is definitely OEM and the spring doesn't protrude on that one either. My new part has the white mark on the electrical cap, but its not level, more of an upward angled swipe. I'm trying to find the bag it came in to check for the holes. Otherwise, checking everything you said, it seems legit. I had no idea of the problem until I watched your video. And was gonna go with Amazon coils and plugs but for $88 it seemed too good to be true and while the plugs looked fine, reviews showed the coils were bad, so back to Rockauto and MC stuff there brought the cost to $300 which I'm okay with for peace of mind, reliability, economical and effective cost wise especially as a DIY'er. Just wished I did this while I was doing the intake manifold/plenum, the fuel rails are gonna be in the way of #7 and #8. Greatly appreciate the pointers and the video ::)

    The specifics that you point out for fake coils can (mostly) be easily and quickly copied by the counterfeiters: a metallic Sharpie line, holes punched in the bags, etc. Those can be too easily remedied to look just like the OEM coils. What really caught my eye (especially on the poorer-quality fake) were the MOLD LINES, especially on the rubber boots. These are high-voltage devices and precautions are taken in manufacture to negate the flow of that electricity via the insulating rubber (or silicone) boot, and a common failure of high-voltage insulators are via cracks, and mold lines (in the rubber boot, in this instance). If I opened a new coil from the packaging and saw obvious mold lines running longitudinally on the insulating boot (from one end to the other end), I would promptly take it back to the counter and ask for a real OEM coil and not a fake. The mold lines are especially grievous on the poor fake! The OEM also has some longitudinal mold lines on the boot, but they are not as pronounced, and also not appear to run the entire length of it; there is a section, a band that goes all the way around, that appears to be perfectly smooth, no mold lines. This would make a good barrier to the flow of high-voltage current, but the fake boots, with obvious mold lines running all the way from one end of the boot to the other end, are the giveaway to me. One of the ways they can make the fakes so cheaply is to cut corners in the manufacturing process, and quality manufacturing usually leaves no mold lines, or very fine and clean mold lines.

    Thanks; Just checked my spare coil for authenticity. The perforated bag, the coil and silver paint mark check out. Was bought at Advance Auto parts. I also have some old coils that were pulled from 2001 Expy 4.6L and they have a green sticker with OEM PN and engineering number. Also brass inserts for the mounting bolt. I think these are perhaps early versions.

      @@SkylineFTW97 It is often cheaper to buy on RA as well. I like to price compare between the two and have found Rock Auto to actually be cheaper than Amazon on pretty much everything. Amazon's prices have been going up over the years to help pay for the "free" Prime shipping that comes with your paid membership and it's almost always easier to buy from Rock Auto and pay a few bucks for shipping that's maybe 1-2 days slower. And Rock Auto is more honest about their aftermarket parts--if it's OEM then it's OEM, if it isn't then it's clearly indicated. I got a serpentine belt for my F-250 shipped to my door for around $11, even if the sucker only lasts 20k miles before wearing out I don't mind it! I think the OEM belt was in the $30 range and I'd be a little over $40 after shipping.

You'll see what looks like little spikes of plastic sticking out of a ledge detail halfway up the part This SCREAMS cheap low tolerance tooling. CHINESE tooling. It's called flash. The plastic under 15,000 psi creeps out the two halves of the mold. China decimated the toolmakers in America. And yes, strong high glass or carbon fiber nylon has a duller look.

      While i agree, the issue is youre paying $60 for a $3.75 coil and expecting it to be a genuine part. I wont lie, i have used the cheap coils you find on ebay in 2 of my trucks, my old 02 5.4 F150 and my 05 navigator and now tossing a spare set from my F150 into my 02 GT. But that was with me knowing they were cheap since i bought 3 sets for the f150 at $27/set and my lincolns for $30. I would have been pissed if i payed $100 or more for a set thinking it was a genuine part even if they gave me another 10yrs of service.

      @binkwood 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Elver_Galarga_jugo I guess what we consider the word "genuine" to mean and does it relate to quality is what it all boils down to. Neither product is manufactured by Ford, it's just a matter of which outsourced company has a license deal with Ford and does that relate to any quality difference. Usually a manufacturer will go with its cheapest option. I agree the counterfeit part is purposely trying to mislead but it's not necessarily any better or worse quality. Frankly I think Amazon should be liable for selling counterfeit anything in that they are the middle man.

Amazon is the new Walmart, it seems like a good idea, but in the end you will just limit your choices of where to purchase things, and with that get good pricing. Cheap isn't always better, even if it a genuine part that shows up at your door.

I still laugh about it when I talk to him, at his best he is an average farm mech. The bar code/numbers is also different, as well as one says Ignition coil and the other simply says coil. At 15:45, you'll also notice the different hole on the coil boot, size/shape and location. Big giveaways there. These counterfeit parts are disgusting and need to be stopped. Ebay and Amazon state that they are trying to fight this, but I don't think they are. I remember years ago when I would report Ebay sellers using other people's pictures and trying to scam people out of their money, and Ebay would tell me they are doing something about it, but weeks later, the same ad would still be online and there would be several other fake ads by the same seller. They don't care, as long as they get the money from the sale, even if it is a fake sale.

    So as a backyard mechanic, we would have no idea about packaging, or parts discrepancies. Looks like we either buy from your list of third party vendors or direct from Ford. No other way for us to know. Pictures on ads can show OEM packaging and you would not know the counterfeit until you have the part in hand. Looks like Ford is responsible for the identification of counterfeit parts. We need a list from Ford of the third party counterfeiters.
