    You are a lifesaver bro! Just changed mine out on my 05 f150 5.4l with 103k followed your instructions to the tee. Took me 3 hours due to my truck being lifted but got all 8 out in one piece. Firewall ones were a toughest ones but not too hard. Used to have the hesitation from 45 to 50 mph not anymore runs like a new truck again. Mpg increased as well!     I have watched several videos on this subject and while none of them seem to contain all the important information you need, this one is the best single source of information on the subject that I have seen. We are very fortunate that others have worked out procedures for this ridiculous mess and that they are willing to share the information with us. I can imagine the frustration of trying to replace these plugs with no prior knowledge of the problems and what to do to minimize their impact.

      i dont see what special procedure he used.. he just removed the plugs normal as any other engine and said to turn the ratchet slowly? i dont see this working for seized in plugs

    Thanks very much for making this video and helping us DIY kinda folks! Gotta love this TH-cam community!
    Yesterday, I replaced the plugs on my 2004 F150 FX4 with 149K total miles on the clock. Took about five hours because I took my time and cleaned the throttle body as well. The old plugs were replaced at a Ford dealership (Motorcraft SP515's two-piece construction) and had just over 65K on them. I was keeping my fingers crossed that the Ford wrench followed the Tech Support Bulletin and put anti-seize on the plug noses to facilitate removal. I guess he did because after following the procedures in this video I got all 8 plugs out without breaking any! Yee haw! (BTW, I did have the Lisle 65600 tool on-hand just in case. LOL!) I installed the newest version of Motorcraft plugs for the 5.4L motor which are the SP546 (PZK 14F) one-piece construction.
    FYI: I deviated in one specific area from this video. I purchased the high-temp (2400 degree) nickel anti-seize and put it around the plug nose only (not the plug threads) even though they're one-piece plugs and should never break. Just wanted to make it easier to remove them if I keep this truck long enough to justify plug replacement in the future.
    The old plugs were definitely worn out and there is a noticeable improvement in the idle smoothness and acceleration. Hoping for a bump in fuel economy as well, but not holding my breath!
    FYI: A couple of months ago I replaced all eight coil packs with Motorcraft coil packs because it started bucking at 45-55 mph. Six of the eight coil packs were original from the factory and two were no-name generics (replaced at 30K+ by the truck's previous owner). I didn't want to screw around chasing codes and figured it was worth the $600 to just replace all 8 coil packs with Motorcraft OEM. The bucking stopped but I knew the plugs should also be replaced as well. And so I did.
    I also cleaned the throttle body as suggested in the video. It was pretty dirty and I have no idea if it was ever cleaned during previous maintenance. Took about 30 minutes extra to remove/clean/reinstall.
    Best of luck to those who attempt this DIY challenge.

      @@lvwrx I don't remember a huge change in how well it ran, but I guess it was good because I didn't have to take it to a repair shop. I traded it in back in 2019 .

    Two things to note: I would have liked to see the passenger side plug closest to firewall removed as I believe it can be the most difficult.
    As far as anti seize, it should always be used with steel to aluminum threads regardless of plug update. Steel and aluminum develop a chemical corrosion eventually. It’s good practice
    Last I would have also shot penetrant down the plug bore prior to removing the plugs

    Thanks. Bought 8 new coils online for my 2006 F150 5.4 . The plugs were already changed fairly recently. Getting quotes to swap out the coils. Labor only. Called MIDAS, their quote was $760 !! Im not much of a mechanic, but after watching your video, I’m fairly convinced I can do it myself. Thanks again.

    One of the best videos on how to change these plugs. I had an '08 with 170,000 miles. I ran half a tank with Techron , warmed the engine and broke the first two plugs. I don't think the Techron removes the carbon as well as the Sea Foam from the condition of the plugs you removed. The Lisle tool worked as advertised. The only advice we differ on is I went to the one piece Champions with eight new yellow Summit Racing coil packs. Used anti seize. Engine ran smoother and stronger than before. Now have 250,000 trouble free miles on the truck. I did have to remove the metal damping ring from the drive shaft after the rubber insert degraded and let the ring flop around on the drive shaft ( come on Ford, you can't balance a drive shaft? I replaced the joints just in case it was time, and the fan blower resistor that went out. I also installed Rancho shocks which got rid of the Ford rake which I hate (maybe good for aerodynamics but it looks awful). No issues with the variable valve timing which iI attribute to oil changes, Slick 50 early in life and A CSL treatment at around 100k. My daughter's 09 needed the entire valve train/oil pump replacement at 139k to the tune of four thousand. I did the lifetime Ford brake job. The rest of the truck is original. Wish Ford went back to building basic trucks instead of beta testing their truck innovation on the public like the hard to replace HVAC damper, the two piece break off in the head plugs, the fall off aluminum drive shaft harmonic balancer, the Ecoboost engine carbonization, the low quality variable valve timing components, leaking third light seals, the missing camber adjustment nut and bolts you have to buy after you bought the truck to lock-in a proper alignment (if you do an alignment without the camber kit installed you are wasting your money), and the list goes on, and on, and on. The holes are in your front tire frame for the camber kits, if your handy you can install them yourself, u-tube installing the camber kits and a string front alignment video and save a lot of money.

    I had that horrible ticking noise! I used a stethoscope and found 3 plugs that were super loud. Replaced them all and now it runs quiet and I get 5-6 MPG better!

      Same here Jeff. It was like a pinging in the exhaust sound.. like an exhaust leak sorta... Once I replaced these plugs it runs a lot quieter now.. I can hear the injectors but that is to be expected.

    Thanks so much for the video. We had to try this job ourselves to save money. Your tips helped a lot. We got all 8 out with no problems. I added a tip from another video that I'm certain helped. Break the plug free, but only about a quarter turn, then retighten. Keeping repeating and the plug slowly gets looser and it is easier to further and further. We also sprayed carb cleaner in each well after pulling the coils and let that sit for 15+ minutes on a warn engine. I can't swear it helped but I think it did.

      My mechanic advised the same method. Little loose, add wd-40, tighten back up. Repeat. I hope I have the same good results myself. 200k+ miles. No idea if the plugs have ever been changed.

    Fantastic video, everything is perfectly paced and easy to see and understand. Just changed the plugs in my '05 F-150. Thanks to this video I got all eight horribly fouled Autolite plugs out with no breakage. Did the throttle body clean out linked in the description as well, that video is as good as this one.

    Thanks for the Guidance ! My wife’s expedition needed a tuneup. I didn’t want to pay through the nose for the dealership to work on it. The 2007 expedition was way easier then the truck you show in your video. The wire harness had some routing tabs that i was able to remove to get to everything and quickly snap back into after.     Used your tips and did everything you said! An entire can of Seafoam in the gas tank on empty + hot motor + carb cleaner and all 8 came out with no breakage! I added PB Blaster in the cylinders with the carb cleaner. No issues. Had a crazy smoke show on start up with the new plugs and COP’s lol… Thank you!

    Superlative video. Used this to change my 2005 F150 plugs. Also added some other internet advise to include backing the plugs out a quarter turn and adding PB Blaster to the wells to break up the carbon on the tips. All in all, went as advertised. Hats off to the folks who posted all of this. Saved me $450.

      Don't use PB Blaster use throttle body cleaner or Seafoam etc because the chemical will enter the combustion chamber when the plugs are removed and burn when the engine is started X8 plug holes this is enough to possibly damage the O2 sensors and catalytic converters in the exhaust system. This was one of the earliest revisions to the Ford TSB they changed the chemical recommendation from their first version.

      As long as your not filling the spark plug chamber, a little PB is not going to hurt. If your worried about it, use a little transmission fluid. Then as you loosen the plug, let it sit a couple of minutes to penetrate-especially if you feel like they are close to breaking.

    This video was really helpful! I didn't have Seafoam, but did use Marvel Mystery oil. No problems. Had 172,000 on car. Did warm up engine. But plugs were tight and squeaky nearly all the way out. Worked them back and forth until felt comfortable unscrewing all the way out. New plugs went in smooth! Thanks for the very clean and comprehensive video.

    for more of 40 years I own Chevy & GMC trucks and I love the simplicity and reliability of a truck, I like to do all my mechanical repairs on all my vehicles, I just purchased a F250 with 5.4 engine and found another world full of complex mechanical engine where just to change the spark plugs is no more a simple task, is full of challenges, if you are not careful can make a very expensive mistake, also the timing system is a nightmare, just like the 6.4 diesel engine junk. No more FORDS

    I used your method and it worked flawlessly. Didn’t have the first plug break and this was on a 300k engine with original plugs. The old plugs were beyond done and looked really bad.

    My '06 Lariat was misfiring badly. Has 136,000 miles on it, and was still on the original plugs. Thanks to your video, I was able to replace all 8 plugs with not a single breakage! Thank you! I will say that mine were like trying to pull up Thor's hammer. These things were crazy stuck! Had to use a breaker extension to get some more torque. I was still very careful to stay "in line" with the plugs. I said multiple prayers during the process. Lol. The truck is running great now!

      Did you do use the Seafoam as he directed? Anything besides that? I've heard a penetrating oil (Kroil) will aid in dissolving the carbon. Was your plugs as clean looking as the ones he pulled out?

      @@smkymtnguy33 I did use the Seafoam. Ran about 1 and a half cans thru the gas tank. I did use a carbon cleaner to soak each plug for 5 to 10 minutes before removing them. Think it was CRC intake and throttle body cleaner? Can't remember. My plugs were worse looking than the ones he pulled in the video. Also, my truck starting acting like it was misfiring again. I went back and checked each plug and found 3 of the 8 were so loose you could take them out by hand! I torqued them appropriately the first time. I read on the F150 forums that the plugs would loosen themselves for some odd reason, after doing a spark plug change.

      Meant to add that i was getting a very bad "ticking" noise. Thought it was possibly the cam phaser as many people have mentioned. Ended up just being 3 loose plugs. I love the F150 community for all their knowledge. I actually rechecked all 8 plugs this evening to see if any were loose. Zero were loose. I cleaned the connection points on all 8 ignition coils when i had them out this time. One of my springs looks bad. Thinking I may replace that ignition coil pack or at least change that spring and boot. I've worked on this particular repair enough times now that I'm getting pretty good at it! A few hours and I can have everything out, cleaned and re-installed.

    You did an awesome job. I have done several of these engines and have broke a few plugs......until I found a video on here where a mechanic uses a tube around the plug to keep the socket and extension from virtually not wiggling at all. I have yet to break another plug since! But again, you're fast, yet good! GREAT JOB!

      If your talking about like on the older spark plug sockets that already have a rubber tube inside the socket itself that keeps it from wiggling and when pull the plug out the tube holds onto the plug so no drops for easy removal.

    Just did this job on my stepsons 04 f150... thank god I found this video... I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and do a lot of my own work on my vehicles... but I would have never thought to put the seafoam to it beforehand... and I do believe that doing that made a BIG difference on how the spark plugs came out.. plugs came out with chunks of carbon sediment on them... I dont think I could have turned them if i hadn't put seafoam to it... thank you for a thorough video all the way through... and an even bigger thank you for the seafoam suggestion... this is still a long shitty job even when it goes smooth, 7 out of 8 spark plugs turned out relatively easy... but one plug was still quite stuck, that one took me a while, slow goings... probly had 8 hours into this job... Fuck Ford... but thank god for this guys video

    I miss the old iron. Open the hood, remove the spark plug wire, then using a 5/8” or a 13/16” deep socket to remove the spark plug.
    3 steps vs. 76 steps. Now that’s progress!!

      @@mygoogleemail2063 Well maybe this country will get smarter and adopt small modular reactors (SMRs) based on the molten salt reactor (MSR) and we will have all the clean energy we can ever use!
      They can take some of that energy and convert sea water that holds carbon dioxide back into gasoline and diesel fuel too. Cheaply I might add.

    This was honestly one of the best videos I've seen in regards to detail and the ability to see what is actually happening while you're doing it. I'm a novice so the videos where the guys don't show what is happening and just say, "Remove the flux capacitor housing and then hammer on the injector brackets with a 50mm and you'll be good" don't really help me much.     Great video, replaced my first set a long time ago and watched to see if your approach was any different than the one I took. Pretty much the same! Replaced the original plugs on my 2004 F150 at 120,000, no problems, did not break a single plug, used an impact on five of them. Did the first by hand to get a feel for how hard they were to get out. Did the next five with the impact, and #4 and #8 by hand due to the firewall. I ran a few bottles of techron through the gas tank before tackling them. Two bottles per tank, three full tanks. It does the same job as seafoam. I ran an extra tank or two of gas through, just to be safe. I'm on my fourth set of plugs now, at 230,000 miles. I did try Champions at the first change for about 1000 miles, but got a misfire on one of them, and goodbye Champions! Been using SP-515s ever since, no breakage worries. Engine is still going strong with regular oil and plug changes. Hope to make it to 300,000 with a full timing kit replacement and a Melling oil pump upgrade.

      Seems like spark plugs are similar to other electronic parts like the coil pack- OEM Ford is always the best.

    Seafoam is the best. I put it in my 1990 F-150 4.9 EFI. And it runs great. And now it helps with tuneups. Nice!

    Thanks a ton for making this video, just completed putting new plugs and coils in and mustve watched this 30 times in the last couple days. Had the notorious shudder at 45 mph and after road testing it is gone. Still ended up with 2 broken plugs but couldve been worse, the lisle extractor tool saved the day and my 06 F150. Keep up the good work!

    Just had my buddy change the stock plugs on mine at 130k, he just went in with a rachet and got them all out without any breaks. Super lucky I guess lol. The engine was warm though because I had just driven to his place so that probably helped.

    Thanks for the great tips. I need to do this on my "new" '05 to fix a low-RPM engine miss. I know what you mean about cleaning the throttle body. I had a '99 Exploder rebuild that had a sticky throttle. It had a debris ring inside inlet around the butterfly causing resistance. A few shots of throttle body cleaner and it was good as new!

    Just 3 weeks ago bought a 2008 ford FX2. I am watching your video because on my way to work this morning I had a spark plug bust loose and broke the hold down plate on the coil . I didn't realize how much you had to do to replace the plugs on this truck. I hope the threads where not damage and fortunitaly it is the 2nd plug from the front on passenger side.       You didn't break one because they had been changed before and already had the new stronger one piece design plugs installed. The original plugs from 2004-2007 were the ones that broke. I bought my '06 F150 new and at 67k miles got an intermittent misfire code requiring spark plug replacement and broke one original plug (#6) which wasn't bad.

      These are the newer plugs. They have more porcelain at the tip than the old ones.

    Just worked on mine today and replaced the 8 plugs and ignition coils following your instructions. Zero problems and the vehicle is running perfect now. Had a misfire on cylinder 2 previously.
