  • This is one of my five favorite rimfire rifles of my of my childhood.
This is a 1949 Remington Sports Master model 512 it was produced from 1940-1962 and then it had a couple of variants after that. This was handed down to me by my grand mother.
If you have a story on this gun please share it with us in the comments below.

I purchased a Remington 512 some 30 years ago. I still have it, and it actually inspired me to collect all of the Remington 5-teen rifles. The 510 Targetmaster, the 511 Scoremaster, the 512 Sportsmaster, and the 513 Matchmaster. I also still have my very first .22 rifle (a Remington 581) that I got by working at a restaurant washing dishes. My dad told me that if I wanted a rifle I would have to work for it and earn it. I know now that it was a lesson in disguise, because we always cherish the things we work hard for much more than what we obtain easily.

I just paid $235 for a Model 512 at a gun show today. My dad had the entire collection of these .22 cal Remington's - single fire, tube fire, clip fire, etc. They were awesome! But my dad sold them off when us kids left home. I was heartbroken. Went to a gun show today for the first time and saw one. had to have it. Maybe I was crazy for paying $235 but I'll admit it was an emotionally-based, nostalgia buy. Thanks for sharing this video!

I bought one of these off of a friend about 15-20 years ago for $30 bucks. Love this gun, fun to shoot, taught my kids to shoot with it, always fires, no matter what I've run through it, and it's still very accurate. I was sitting down to clean it when I watched this.

As a kid growing up in the 50's there was one of these in the house. I think my Dad bought it for my two older brothers to use. As I got older I was allowed to take it out to target shoot. It was a great gun. My oldest brother still has it. He's in his mid seventies now. I'm sure his son or grandson will get it after my brother passes on.

Thanks for the video; stumbled across it while I was trying to date mine. I can also confirm that grandpas are the source for this rifle--my grandpa gave it to me out of the blue one day when he found out I was looking for a .22, probably around 2006 or so. It's been a great little rifle, although it doesn't get as much action as it once did because I'm not as much of a plinker anymore. Really is a sweet rifle.
Anyways, turns out that mine seems to be an October 1954 rifle. My grandpa would have been 19 when he bought it. Little something to remember him by. Thanks again.

Hand oiled finish. Linseed oil. Take some 4#oooo steelwool to it and rub some linseed oil on it and it will look like new in no time.
I went to camp when I was 9 and they had a model 511, magazine feed Remington. I would rent that thing everyday and buy a box of fifty, Winchester Super x and a target. The first day a counselor went with me to show me how to work it and teach me safety. After that I just went by myself. Needless to say I was hooked and after three weeks I was bringing back targets with no bullseyes left.
Fast forward, I came across one from a guy that was down on his luck, or decision making and he had this gun that was pretty trashed, that he wanted to sell. I gave him $25 for it and put it away for a while. A couple of years went by and I pulled this thing out and realized what it was. Then I went to work on it and found that the bore which I couldn't even see down was like new when I cleaned it. I had to cut the mag out because it was Bondoed in place, and make a new release spring for the magazine. Guess that's why it was glued in place. I did a lot of scrubbing and polishing with steelwool and such to get the rust off and paint off the stock. Very long story short, I have the identical rifle I learned to shoot with sixty years later, and it still very accurate.

Thank you for the memories, I think mine is a 512, my grandfather had it on the dairy farm. He passed away in 1953, my dad got the gun and the dairy. With all the diets.
He gave me the gun years ago. All of my brothers & all of my cousins would shoot it at all the family gatherings.
    It has been WELL used.
It needs some work on the bolt action.
Thinks again for the hart felt memory

I got my 512-x for a whopping 20 dollars as a kid. It was in a shed on our farm rusting away so I asked around and it was my uncle's. I asked him if he's sell it, well 20 dollars latter I had a 22. I was around 10 back then I'm only 23 now. Our hired hand even gave me a scope to put on it to! great rifle.
Edit yes I was a kid yes it was okay. My uncle was my guardian then even though I lived with my grandpa yes it stayed locked up. by the age of 10 I had my hunters saftey licesne and everything I knew how to handle firearms my grandpa got me shooting at around 5 or 6 years old

@@jonnywalker8471 I have the Model 512-x. I am 64 years old. My Dad gave me this rifle for my 11th birthday, in 1966. I grew up in rural northern California. The main rule that my Dad insisted was that I had to let him know when I was going to go plinking and/or hunting small game with it. Back then, it was quite common for people to see a kid or a group of kids walking down the road with their .22 rifles, BB guns or pellet guns. Now days if that happens, somebody is going to call 9-11. My first gun was a Harrington & Richardson Model 755- Sahara .22 single shot bolt action. I got that for my 9th birthday.

This was my first rifle, still have it. I grew up in the 50’s and was out with this rifle several times a week. Did a lot of rabbit and squirrel hunting with it. Also target practiced with a lot of tin cans. I shot left handed and worked the bolt with my left thump, did not have to put the gun down to work the bolt.

What a great plinking rifle. It's the model my mom first showed me how to clean and all that before she took me plinking cans Down By the River. My Dad had the single shot version, the Target Master. Both my parents were good practical shooters.
    BTW that rifle loves shorts.
    Edit added
My Dad and Uncle Bill used to sit on the porch and at 20-25yards and LITERALLY see who could DRIVE NAILS into a board faster. Gentleman wagering only.

I have one. It’s became a family heirloom. My great uncle bought one brand new for my great grandfather in 55. And about 7 years went by and when my great grandfather died it went back to my great uncle, then the same year he died and it went to my grandmother. Then she pretty much gave it to my father who gave it to me when I was younger. And now I have a son of my own I plan on giving it to him.

I’ll never understand how anyone goes digging into a closet, attic, basement and finds a long lost gun. I’m in my very senior years and off the top of my mind It is still possible for me to recall every firearm I owned and where they are at present time. Weather I still own them or who I sold them to or what gun store I might have traded it in on or who I bought them from.

I just came across your video while searching for a replacement butt plate for my Remington Sportmaster Model 512 P. This rifle belonged to my now 90+ year father and was given to him as a present by my grandfather in the 1940's. Dad says he and his brother used to shoot squirrels with this rifle and my grandmother would fry them up for Sunday dinner. He gave the rifle to me when we I was about 12 or so after we moved from suburbia out to the country. I never did much hunting but have enjoyed plinking with it over the years. It's really quite accurate with just the iron sites and it is just a cool gun with the tubular magazine. The stock on my gun is actually very handsome, burled walnut although it was cracked and repaired. Thanks for sharing your video and this rifle will always hold a fond place in my heart and memories long after dad eventually leaves this earth. Best.

I bought a used Sportmaster years ago at a pawn shop for my father-in-law to hang behind his bar. I refinished the stock because he liked his wood flawless and glossy.
The date stamp indicates November, 1966, so it must be a variant like 512-x, but I can only see the "512" as the front scope bell covers the rest of the letters.
It has a swept back blade front sight on a ramp, and the rear sight is missing.
I've had two or three different scopes on it, and the rifle is very accurate, although I rarely shoot it past 50 yards.
My favorite plinking is done with low velocity 850 - 1250 subsonic stuff at 30 yards out back of my house, which sounds about like a kid's cap gun out of this 25" barrel. Fun to shoot!

    Hey guys,
How does everyone clean this rifle? Its a hard rifle to get a cleaning rod down because of the way one of the parts sticks up where the bolt goes in. I noticed you can push cleaning rod in with trigger pulled to bring this lever that’s in the way, down. Is this what you all do? The manual says to barely clean the rifle and just use specific rounds made by Remington.
Interested in how others clean this rifle

I’m having issues getting the lot back in on mine. My dad took it apart to clean it. But we’re having issues putting the bolt inside. We inherited the gun after a family member passed away. Any tips are welcome. Thanks.

      @urbanairgunner6402  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes getting the bolt back in is a pain. Make sure the bullet feed tube is out of the gun.
Make sure there is a little oil on the bolt and as you are putting the bolt in wiggle it .Best I remember the bolt wants to twist so you kinda have to work the bolt handle. It's always been a pain to get it back into the gun. I will have to take mine apart to see. Just t don't try and FORCE it.

Matt so I looked at mine and I remembered so when ypu try and put the bolt in there is a piece that jumps up in front of the bolt and keeps it from going in. Push it down with a screw driver and gently push the bolt in. You may have to pull the trigger at the same time to get that piece to push down. It travel's in one of the grooves in the bottom of the bolt.
      Let me know.

@@urbanairgunner6402 yes sir! I discovered that while playing around with it last night but I couldn’t seem to get it. Today my dad came back over and we tag teamed it and were able to get it back in. He worked the bolt and held the trigger down while I used a flashlight and then reached in with a little metal object and depressed the little lever. Ended up going back in just fine. It definitely helped having both of us on it once we figured it out. Thanks for the help! I appreciate it a lot snd keep up the good work!

    • @urbanairgunner6402
      @urbanairgunner6402  5 ปีที่แล้ว

A rimfire cartridge is just that. The firing pin of the gun strikes the rim of the shell to ignite the powder inside as apposed to a center fire that has a primer in the center of the cartridge.
